Kerala Congress Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil Resigns Following Allegations Of Coercing Woman To Abort Pregnancy

Kerala Youth Congress state president and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil has been hit by fresh allegations after the release of an audio clip in which he is allegedly heard pressuring a young woman to undergo an abortion.

The audio, aired on Malayalam news channel Reporter TV and widely circulated on social media, features a conversation where Rahul reportedly questions how the child would be raised without a father and presses the woman to terminate the pregnancy. The woman is heard refusing and insisting she would take care of the child herself.

Political commentators and opponents have described the clip as proof of coercion. Critics said the conversation revealed attempts by Rahul to avoid responsibility and force the woman into terminating her pregnancy, despite health risks.

It is reported that this audio portion is part of a longer conversation as well as WhatsApp chats, which they claim further implicates the MLA. They alleged that while Rahul has previously faced accusations of misconduct, this revelation is the most serious to emerge so far.

News18 Malayalam reports that Mamkoottathil has resigned from his post, reportedly submitting his resignation to the Congress national leadership. Sources say the resignation was also conveyed to KPCC president Sunny Joseph over the phone.

The resignation comes after revelations on social media sparked calls for his removal. Party insiders indicate that KM Abhijith may be given temporary charge of the Youth Congress state unit in Rahul’s place.

It is reported that several women leaders of the party had filed complaints against Rahul with AICC general secretary Deepadas Munshi, who oversees the state, with six separate complaints received so far.

This comes after Expatriate writer Honey Bhaskaran accused  Mamkoottathil of harassment and misusing private conversations with women to malign them publicly. In a detailed Facebook post, Honey alleged that Rahul initiated Instagram chats during her Sri Lanka trip in June, later distorting their nature to present her as pursuing him. She claimed Rahul has a history of similar behavior toward multiple women, including Youth Congress workers, and accused Congress MP Shafi Parambil of ignoring repeated complaints against him.

Honey urged women to speak out and demanded Rahul resign from politics. The controversy follows several other complaints, with over nine reportedly reaching the AICC. aPolitical reactions include BJP protests demanding his resignation and criticism from CPI(M). The Congress leadership has sought explanations, with the AICC requesting a report from KPCC, while KPCC chief Sunny Joseph emphasized no concrete complaints warrant immediate action, though deliberations continue regarding Rahul’s position ahead of elections.
