Devesh Ranjan and Kumudha Ranjan, an Indian-origin couple currently residing in the US has come out with a low cost ventilator which has been on the demand since the pandemic started.
Devesh, a graduate from Regional Engineering College, Trichy (now National Institute of Technology, Trichy) is originally from Bihar. Currently, he works as professor and associate chair in Georgia Tech’s George W Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. His wife, Kumudha is a medical professional.
The ventilator is said to have a manufacturing cost of $100. “Even with a price point of USD 500, manufacturers would have enough money to make sure that they are making enough profit in the market”, Devesh told PTI. The ventilators of the kind developed by Devesh is said to cost around $10,000 in the American market.
Devesh however, has made it clear, that theirs is not an ICU ventilator as those are more sophisticated and costs more.
The ventilator will soon be available in India and other developing countries.
