Hindu Munnani Slams DMK Govt’s Inaction Over Beef Waste Being Dumped In Vaigai River During Bakrid

The Hindu Munnani has harshly criticized the inaction of Tamil Nadu police after beef waste was dumped along the southern bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai during Bakrid celebrations, causing unbearable stench and severe inconvenience to the public. The group alleged that despite this recurring issue, authorities failed to act due to the DMK government’s appeasement of the Muslim community for political gain.

In its official statement on X, the Hindu Munnani expressed outrage, “The Dravidian Model DMK Government Woos Muslim for Votes.. While Officials Fear Action!! During Bakrid celebrations yesterday, Muslims dumped beef waste on the southern bank of Madurai’s Vaigai River. The foul stench has made the road unbearable for pedestrians, causing severe public distress. Dumping meat waste along the Vaigai riverbanks has become a routine practice. Dumping meat waste into the river pollutes groundwater and spreads incurable diseases such as skin diseases. The government and Pollution Control Board’s failure to act despite the precedent of groundwater destruction in Vellore and Ranipet due to tannery waste is condemnable. The public believes that the ruling Dravidian model DMK government is entirely fixated with appeasing Muslims for vote bank politics, which is why government officials fear taking action against those committing such atrocities.”

The group warned of environmental dangers, citing the High Court’s directives against polluting water bodies. It also pointed to past incidents in Vellore and Ranipet, where industrial waste severely contaminated groundwater, urging the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and local authorities to take immediate and decisive action.

“The courts have repeatedly pointed out that rivers and water bodies should not be polluted and have ordered strict action to be taken against those who pollute them. Therefore, the Hindu Munnani urges the Tamil Nadu government and police to immediately take strict action against those polluting water resources, abandoning vote-bank politics,” Hindu Munnani added.

Residents of Madurai, particularly in areas like Nelpettai, Uthangudi, Kalmedu, and Anupanadi, have been raising concerns for years. According to local accounts, meat waste from nearby shops is often dumped directly into the Vaigai River, raising fears of water contamination and the spread of diseases.

Last year, a fine of ₹50,000 was imposed on violators for similar illegal dumping. However, the recurrence of the issue has frustrated locals, who say municipal enforcement remains weak and monitoring inadequate. Supporting these claims, a recent survey conducted by Madurai Corporation and environmental activists revealed that waste continues to be discharged at 177 points along the Vaigai River with 41 of those located within the corporation’s jurisdiction.

The latest incident near Nelpettai has reignited public anger, with environmentalists warning of long-term ecological damage and threats to aquatic life. Hindu Munnani reiterated its demand for immediate government intervention, emphasizing that protecting water resources must take precedence over vote-bank considerations.
