In a desperate attempt to stop the extradition of economic offender Mehul Choksi from Dominica to India, four lawyers have been flown into Dominica from London, reports Hindustan Times.
The timing seems to be a suspect as Choksi’s extradition hearing is scheduled on 2nd June in Dominica’s Commonwealth Court of Justice as he moved a habeas corpus plea before the said court against his extradition.
Presently, Choksi is admitted to a hospital in Dominica after he was reported missing from Antigua and Barbuda. However, there are reports that Choksi may have taken his girlfriend on a romantic trip to Dominica, where he was arrested.
Choksi has been accused of embezzling 13 thousand crore rupees and the Enforcement Directorate will petition before the court that Choksi is an Indian citizen and that he should be deported to India who also has a Red Corner Notice (RCN) from Interpol issued against him.
Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Saturday said, “We live in a globalised world where cooperation among states is required to fight and defeat criminals and to deny criminals the use of the state apparatus for protection and advancement of their criminal conduct. That is precisely why we have and continue to encourage the government of Dominica, to make him persona non grata for illegally entering their country and to deport him to India where he is still a citizen,’.
