Kalaignar News, a mouth-piece of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has put a misleading and false newscard questioning the allocation of funds for the Clean Ganga project initiated by the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.
The outlet had published an article with the headline, “Ganga declared unfit for bathing – Where is the ₹20,000 crore allocated by Modi? Netizens Question!”.
The DMK mouthpiece also took sly jibes at Hindus in the article saying “Ganga is also the holy river of Hinduism in India. As bathing in the Ganges is considered a pious act, devotees from different parts of India flock to the Ganges to bathe in it. Amidst this, the National Green Tribunal has ordered not to bathe in such river Ganges. The wastes of various cities on the banks of the river Ganga are mixed in the river Ganga. Due to this, the river Ganges is continuously getting polluted.”
It further went on to add “In 2014, when he took office in the BJP-led government union, he announced that he would clean the Ganga river. Later, a project called ‘Namami Gange’ was launched and in 2015, Prime Minister Modi allocated ₹20,000 crores to clean the river Ganga. But now the entire stretch of river Ganga in West Bengal is unfit for bathing, the National Green Tribunal has said. Also, due to high levels of faecal coliform bacteria, no one should bathe there. As a result, netizens are questioning what happened to the amount allocated by Modi to clean the Ganges.”
However, a swift fact-check conducted by Only Truth, has debunked Kalaignar News’s claims. The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti disclosed that a substantial sum of approximately ₹16,011.65 crore had been allocated for the National Mission for Clean Ganga Mission from 2014 until 31 December 2023. Additionally, an allocation of about ₹15,015.26 crore was earmarked for district administrations in the Ganga basin to aid in river cleaning efforts.
It’s noteworthy that each district administration is tasked with establishing sewage treatment plants to treat wastewater before releasing it into the river, as per directives. The investigation also highlighted the National Green Tribunal’s intervention, particularly in West Bengal, where the Ganga’s condition was deemed most dire.
In essence, the NGT highlights the plight of Ganga River in I.N.D.I. Ally Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal under the Chief Ministership of Mamata Banerjee. Startling revelations indicate that nearly nine districts in Bengal are grappling with poor water conditions, with untreated sewage being indiscriminately discharged into the river. The alarming fact emerges that, in Bengal alone, a staggering 258.67 MLD of untreated sewage finds its way into the Ganges daily.
So, it’s evident that Kalaignar News’s portrayal of the Clean Ganga project’s funding allocation is misleading as it tries to cast aspersions on the Modi Government without delving into the merits of the NGT study.
