DMK Min Govi Chezhian Calls Anna Univ Sexual Assault “An Individual Student Assault”, Netizens Slam Him For Irresponsible Comments

Netizens have strongly criticized DMK Higher Education DMK Govi Chezhian for his comments on social media, where he stated, “Do not politicize this incident in which a student was victimized.” Instead of focusing on decisive action regarding the case, he chose to criticize the previous AIADMK government, which did not sit well with the public, especially in the wake of the sexual assault of a female engineering student on Anna University campus. The minister’s remarks were seen as an attempt to deflect attention from the seriousness of the incident.

On 25 December 2024, DMK Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian took to the social media platform X, where he commented, “A student from Guindy Engineering College has filed a complaint of sexual assault. The police are investigating. Appropriate decisions will be made at the university level to ensure such an incident does not happen again. Those attempting to politicize this incident, in which an individual student has been victimized, should remember that during the Pollachi sexual assault case under the previous regime, the victims were too afraid to file complaints due to pressure from the ruling government.”

Netizens deemed the comments from the sitting minister highly irresponsible, especially given that news reports had revealed the on-campus CCTV cameras were not functioning due to rain. At the same time, social media discussions were already shedding light on the suppression of previous cases in Tamil Nadu, particularly those involving individuals with political connections. Chezhian’s comments were seen as adding fuel to the fire. In response, netizens criticized DMK’s Govi Chezhian for drawing comparisons to the AIADMK regime. They questioned the minister, asking what had happened to the same Pollachi case, and pointing out that the DMK has been in power for over 3.5 years without taking meaningful action.

One netizen questioned, “Alright, it’s been 3.5 years since your Vidiyal regime came to power. What happened to the Pollachi case? Has the investigation been completed or not? If we ask about a mistake made during your rule, don’t just spin it out of context, sir.”

Another netizen slammed the minister stating, “What happened in the previous Government does not define what should happen now. Why is the state Government in defensive mode: because the perpetrator is from their own fold?” 

Another netizen slammed the minister stating, “If it was your daughter or some woman in your family or in dmk leaders’ family would you say the same? When it’s some common man you don’t care because you think public will forget this and vote for you for few rupees? Shame on you! #ShameOnYouStalin #AnnaUniversity”

Another netizen commented, “Student Sexual Assault at Anna University… Is this the scripture eaten by the corpse when the demon rules?” by adding the current chef minister MK Stalin’s response in the previous regime.

Another netizen pointed to a comment by the current Chief Minister, MK Stalin, as an opposition leader saying, “Instead of doing politics, will the opposition parties make ‘Aviyal’?”

Another netizen mocked, “He belongs to your thievery-Dravidian model.”

Another netizen mocked the minister asking, “What, a private student??? who would be afraid if such mentally ill people were in power?”
