On Friday (25 November 2022), Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with state finance ministers as part of the pre-budget consultative meeting in New Delhi.
States like Tamil Nadu asked for a five-year extension of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) compensation and more funding for infrastructure development, while others demanded more funding for social development.
Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan who participated in the pre-budget session urged the Central Government to combine cesses and surcharges into basic tax rates in order to ensure that states receive their “legitimate share” of devolution.
In addition, he urged the Union Government to give the states more untied funding rather than “one-size-fits-all homogenization” through ever-more-detailed Central plans. In his speech, DMK minister PTR also stated that because many schemes’ unit costs and the Centre’s share of the cost are out of line with the actual costs incurred on the ground, the state must shoulder an “additional financial burden” to satisfy the people’s justifiable aspirations.
Later addressing a pressmeet in Delhi, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan said,” In Tamil Nadu, the inflation level is about 2.5% lower than the national average. The reason for the low inflation rate in the state is the extensive PDS system. So, food inflation in the state is low.”
However, the year-on-year inflation rate data published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) showed that Tamil Nadu’s inflation in October 2022 was higher than the national average. According to MoSPI data, rural inflation in Tamil Nadu was 7.43%, urban inflation was 6.9%, and overall inflation was 7.1%, while the national average was 6.98%, 6.50%, and 6.77% for rural, urban, and overall inflation, respectively.
Referring to the PTR’s lies, the BJP National IT wing president said Tamil Nadu’s inflation was higher than the national average and that the DMK minister lied all the time.
TN Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan is economical with facts and talks through his hat all the time. Overall inflation in TN for the month of Oct 2022 was at 7.10%, higher than national average, which stood at 6.77%, and not 2.5% lower, as claimed.

What TN Finance Minister says : Inflation in TN is about 2.5% lower than National Average.
What is Truth :
National average is 6.77% and in TN it is 7.10%, as per Ministry of Statistics November Report.Isn’t it a blatant lie ?
