The Tamil Nadu police have booked 12 individuals, including a DMK councillor, for allegedly barging into a house and assaulting a youth in Tiruvarur district.

The victim, Kishore (20), a resident of Srinivasapuram, reported that his sister Mahalakshmi had recently purchased and begun renovating an old house in the locality. While painting work was underway, DMK councillor Purushothaman (45) and his associates put up large banners in front of the house to announce a local temple consecration ceremony.

When Kishore objected to the placement of the banners, an altercation broke out. On 23 August 2025, Purushothaman and over a dozen men allegedly stormed into the house, assaulted Kishore, and caused property damage estimated at ₹35,000.

Following Kishore’s complaint, Tiruvarur police registered a case against the councillor and his associates. Purushothaman, however, also lodged a counter-complaint. As a result, police filed cases against both groups, naming more than 75 people in total from either side.

Reacting sharply to the Tiruvarur incident, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai lashed out at the ruling DMK through a post on his official X handle. He wrote, Goondagiri of DMK in full public display. DMK Tiruvarur ward councillor Purushothaman and his gang attacked a person for objecting to the placement of a banner in front of his residence. From Ministers to Councillors, goondaism is DMK’s political culture. Your party that thrives on thuggery and violence cannot hide behind staged apologies, Thiru @mkstalin.”
