Actor Dhanush could be emerging as a potential political recruit for AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, with reports suggesting that preliminary discussions have taken place about bringing the actor into the party.
According to a Junior Vikatan report, Palaniswami is exploring the possibility of using Dhanush’s popularity to revive AIADMK’s fortunes, attract younger voters and counter the growing appeal of actor-turned-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The report claims that the idea gained traction after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, which reportedly prompted Dhanush to consider entering politics. Preliminary discussions are said to have taken place between intermediaries and the actor.
Sources cited in the report claim that Dhanush and Mithun, Palaniswami’s son, have spoken three times outside Tamil Nadu. The possibility of offering Dhanush a senior organisational position, such as joint general secretary or youth wing secretary, has reportedly been discussed.
Palaniswami is said to view Dhanush’s entry as a potential way to strengthen AIADMK’s appeal among young voters and rebuild its support base following successive electoral setbacks. The report also suggests that the actor’s popularity among certain communities could help the party consolidate support in southern Tamil Nadu, where it is seeking to regain lost ground.
Dhanush’s Political Ambitions
The reported discussions come amid signs that Dhanush may be laying the groundwork for a possible political entry. The actor has reportedly transformed his fan club into a welfare organisation and made changes to the flag previously used by the group.
According to people said to be close to Dhanush, the 2026 election results have given him fresh encouragement to consider politics. However, the actor is believed to face significant challenges in building an independent political organisation.
Unlike Vijay, whose fan base reportedly includes substantial support among women and children, Dhanush may find it more difficult to translate his popularity into a broad-based electoral support base. The report also claims that his existing fan-club network lacks the organisational strength needed for a statewide political campaign.
Building a booth-level network and sustaining it until the next election would require considerable resources and organisational capacity. Joining an established party such as AIADMK could therefore offer Dhanush an alternative route into politics, allowing him to rely on an existing cadre network rather than build one from scratch.
The report further claims that a businessman with close ties to AIADMK, who is also said to be a well-wisher of Dhanush, played a role in facilitating the discussions.
BJP’s Possible Role
Some political observers have also suggested that the reported effort to bring Dhanush into AIADMK could have a larger political objective, with the BJP allegedly seeking to create a potential Vijay-versus-Dhanush contest in Tamil Nadu politics.
However, the report does not establish that the BJP is directly involved in the discussions.
Palaniswami’s reported interest in Dhanush comes after he criticised Vijay over his National Film Awards record, questioning why the actor had not won a National Award despite acting in around 70 films. Dhanush, by contrast, has won six National Film Awards, according to the report.
Whether Dhanush ultimately joins AIADMK remains uncertain. If the reported discussions lead to an agreement, Palaniswami could be seeking to use the actor’s cinematic popularity to attract younger voters, strengthen the party’s public appeal and reclaim political ground lost to newer players such as TVK.
