A 21-year-old college student in Chennai, who reportedly struggles with mental health issues, was repeatedly raped by seven men over several months. Despite her father’s initial complaint to the Ayanavaram police last month, the suspects were released with only a warning after signing an undertaking.
The survivor’s father, a daily wage worker, became aware of the assaults after discovering intimate photos on her phone. Dissatisfied with the lack of action, her uncle, who works at a corporate hospital, stepped in to assist in filing a fresh complaint. This led to the case being transferred to the Chintadripet police, who referred it to the all-women police station in Egmore for investigation.
Two of the accused—a 19-year-old BSc student named Suresh and a Class XII student—were arrested on Saturday, while the remaining suspects are on the run. Authorities continue to try to locate and apprehend the absconding individuals.
What kind of police lets off rapists with an undertaking that they wouldn’t rape in future? That too 7 rapists who raped a mentally ill woman?
Under inefficient CM @mkstalin & extreme politicisation by #DMK Govt., the once famous TN Police is losing its’ immense respect.. pic.twitter.com/tvhkaxTmSG
