New Himalayan Snake Species Named After ‘Titanic’ Actor Leonardo DiCaprio

New Himalayan Snake Species Named After 'Titanic' Actor Leonardo DiCaprio

A new genus and snake species discovered in the Himalayas has been named after the Academy Award-winning Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio—the “Titanic” star who is also a passionate environmentalist.

The newly described snake species, ‘Anguiculus dicaprioi’ is distributed from central Nepal to Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, whereas ‘Anguiculus rappii’ is distributed in Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh, officials said.

These snakes are mostly active from late May to August and are not found at other times of the year, nothing is known about the biology of the two species, and ‘Anguiculus rappii’ is rare and has not been recorded in the last couple of decades.

Virender Bhardwaj first found the snake in his backyard in the western Himalayas during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

He posted its pictures on social media, leading to a sensation – and a three-year-long investigation coupled with laborious research – to identify the snake which resembled ‘Liopeltis rappi’, a species known to be distributed in the eastern Himalayas.

However, the population from Himachal Pradesh differed from the true ‘Liopeltis rappi’ found in Sikkim in many aspects like the scales on the head and general colour patterns — which was confirmed by examining specimens from natural history museums across Europe, the US and even India.

Besides, the DNA sequences generated for this snake did not match any genus and the team included DNA and morphological data for other related species from all over Asia.

The complication of the molecular and morphological data suggested that the snake from HP is related to ‘Liopeltis rapper’ but differed in many aspects to be called a new species. Both belong to a new genus that is endemic to the Himalayas region.

Zeeshan A. Mirza of Max Planck Institute for Biology at Tubingen (Germany), Virender K. Bhardwaj and H. T. Lalremsanga of Mizoram University (India), Saunak Pal of Newcastle University (UK), Gernot Vogel of the Society for Southeast Asian Herpetology(Germany), Patrick D. Cambell of the Natural History Museum (UK), and Harshil Patel of the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation (Mumbai, India) authored a research paper.

The research paper was submitted early this year and published recently by Scientific Reports, an international peer-reviewed journal.

DiCaprio has been actively involved in raising awareness about global climate change, increased biodiversity losses, and the impact of pollution on human health, among other related issues.

“The specific epithet ‘dicaprioi’ is a patronym honouring Leonardo DiCaprio, an American actor, film producer, and environmentalist who has been actively involved in creating awareness about global climate change, increased biodiversity loss, and human health issues through pollution,” the report explained.

“The work not only resolved the status of the Himalayan species but also resolved a taxonomic confusion regarding the genera Liopeltis and Gongylosoma that lasted 180 years. The work provides a newly revised classification of these two genera that are distributed across Asia,” said a statement here.

The members of the genus Anguiculus are small and currently known by two species. These snakes are found at elevations above 1500 meters across the Himalayas.

The authors said that the description of a new snake genus and species from Himachal Pradesh highlights the poor herpetofauna documentation of the western Himalayas.

Preliminary field surveys across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand suggest that the region’s biodiversity has been grossly underestimated. Along with Jammu and Kashmir, it remains the least explored region for the herpetofauna biota it hosts.

India-Russia Ties So Strong That PM Modi Would Understand Me Without Translation: Putin

India-Russia Ties So Strong That PM Modi Would Understand Me Without Translation: Putin

Highlighting the time-tested India-Russia partnership and his friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday emphasised that the bond between the two countries is so strong that PM Modi would understand him without needing translation. Putin made the remark as both leaders sat down for bilateral discussions in Kazan on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit. “Our relationship is so tight that you will understand me without any translation,” said the Russian President, sparking laughter in the room at the Governor’s Palace.

The Russian President recalled PM Modi’s visit to Moscow in July, the “fruitful negotiations” that were held and thanked the Indian Prime Minister for accepting his invite and coming to Kazan for the BRICS summit. “In Kazan we must make a number of important decisions aimed at further improving the activities of the association and strengthening multifaceted cooperation within its framework. And we greatly value our cooperation in this area, I mean that our states stood at the origins of the association’s creation,” he highlighted. Putin stated that Russian-Indian relations are characterised by a ‘Special Privileged Strategic Partnership’ and continue to develop actively.

“Interaction between legislative bodies is strengthening. Our foreign ministers are in constant contact. Trade turnover is in good condition. And the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission is scheduled for November 12 in New Delhi,” he added. India has maintained a steady relationship with Russia even during the current geopolitical crisis amid the ongoing conflict in the region – a fact that Putin acknowledged once again during his meeting with PM Modi on Tuesday. “Major projects are being developed consistently, and we welcome your decision to open the Consulate General of India in Kazan. Expanding India’s diplomatic presence in Russia will contribute to the further development of bilateral relations,” said the Russian President.

In July, during PM Modi’s visit to Russia – his first to the country since 2019 and first to Moscow after 2015 – Putin conferred the Indian PM with the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, Russia’s highest civilian award. On Monday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had hailed the growing ties between the two countries. “If you look at our history with Russia after Independence, Russia has never done anything to impact our interests negatively. Among the major countries, there are not many about whom you can say this,” Jaishankar said at the NDTV World Summit.

India Gearing Up For 2nd White Revolution, Says HM Shah At NDDB Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said India is gearing up for a second white revolution and aims to connect all the eight crore milk-producing farmers to the cooperative infrastructure in the near future. Addressing the diamond jubilee celebrations of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in Gujarat’s Anand, HM Shah said at present only 1.5 crore of the milk-producing farmers are connected with the cooperatives while most are still facing exploitation.

Also being celebrated is the birth anniversary of Amul’s founder, Tribhuvandas Patel. As the guest of honour, Union Minister Amit Shah addressed the audience, reflecting on NDDB’s pivotal role in transforming India into one of the largest milk producers in the world. He stated, “I am privileged to be the first cooperative minister of the country. NDDB is a great institute not just in India but also around the world. This institute has achieved results because it works professionally. So many women are associated with Amul and benefit from this employment model. Their idea is to distribute profits among people — this organisation doesn’t have an owner, and that’s its best part.” Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma, and several other state ministers and dignitaries, joined Amit Shah at the celebration.

HM Shah highlighted NDDB’s evolution over the years in his remarks, noting, “I once advised that we should not be limited to milk; expand yourselves. I am happy to share that NDDB has now expanded into vegetable and fruit processing. This expansion allows farmers to reap significant benefits, with processed products reaching consumers across the globe.” The Home Minister also commended the GOBARdhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan) initiative launched by the Government of India, which aims to manage and convert organic waste, mainly from cattle, into valuable products such as biogas and organic manure.

He emphasized its role in promoting environmental sustainability and improving rural livelihoods, stating, “Gobar se dhan khada hua. Women in villages are benefiting from this scheme. These women may not understand carbon credits, but they are all now part of our sustainable future.”

HM Shah also unveiled the plans of the BJP government to establish two lakh cooperatives in the country in the next five years. He said the creation of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is rooted in the conviction that our nation’s socio-economic progress lies largely in the development of rural India.

Kerala Govt Appeals Against HC Order Of Taking Over Six Churches

A day after the Kerala High Court announced taking contempt action against the Chief Secretary and two District Collectors for defying the court order to take possession of six churches embroiled in the Orthodox-Jacobite Church dispute, the Kerala government on Tuesday filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against it.

The state government, in its appeal petition, said that it needs more time to comply with the order.

The Jacobite Church has also approached the apex court, while the Orthodox Church has filed a caveat that the court should not make a decision until they are heard.

Incidentally, on Thursday, the Kerala High Court dismissed appeals filed by the state government and Jacobite Christians challenging a single-judge bench’s order directing District Collectors to take possession of six churches embroiled in the Orthodox-Jacobite Church dispute.

On Friday, the Kerala High Court announced that they had started contempt proceedings against the Chief Secretary and the two District Collectors, under whose purview the six churches fall. They defied the orders of the High Court.

In August, the single-judge bench ordered the District Collectors of Ernakulam and Palakkad to take possession of six disputed churches where the obstruction persisted.

Incidentally, the apex court in its final verdict in 2017, gave the Orthodox faction the right to administer 1,100 churches and parishes under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and said that there was no ground for the Jacobites to claim any of the churches.

A non-Catholic Christian community in Kerala, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, has two factions — the majority Orthodox, who have their headquarters in Kottayam, and the Jacobites, who consider the Patriarch of Antioch in Beirut (Lebanon) as their supreme leader.

The community first split into Orthodox and Jacobite in 1912, but following a Supreme Court ruling, it came together in Kottayam for a brief period between 1958 and 1970.

Since 1970, they have been at war over control of churches.

After decades of trial, the apex court gave its final verdict in 2017.

Consequently, the Orthodox faction has been taking control over churches now run by the Jacobite faction.

While the Orthodox faction has already taken over a few churches on directions from the High Court after the police were given specific instructions, in some churches, the Jacobite faction has been unrelenting.

In terms of numbers, the Orthodox Church is a much bigger entity than the Jacobite Church.

BJP TN Leader Ashvathaman’s Wife Files Complaint With NCW Against VCK Leader Vanni Arasu For Personal Attacks

BJP TN Leader Ashvathaman's Wife Files Complaint With NCW Against VCK Leader Vanni Arasu For Personal Attacks

Durga Ashvathaman, the wife of Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary A Ashvathaman, has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women against Vanni Arasu, the State Deputy General Secretary of the VCK party. The complaint alleges that Arasu made indecent comments and personal attacks against both Ashvathaman and Durga, constituting personal attacks and defamation of women.

The exchange began with VCK Deputy General Secretary Vanni Arasu, who suggested that his party chief, Thirumavalavan, should be positioned as Chief Minister. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan criticized Thirumavalavan’s aspirations, claiming he had no right to discuss social justice and that his dream of becoming Chief Minister was unrealistic because he was “playing a double game.” Murugan questioned Thirumavalavan’s status as a Dalit leader, pointing out that he had filed a Supreme Court case challenging reservation benefit for the Arunthathiyar community, asserting that he is merely a leader of the VCK party.

In this debate about reservations, NTK chief Seeman added fuel to fire by aiding support for Thirumavalavan, questioning why he couldn’t aspire to be Chief Minister when Murugan had become a Union Minister. When BJP State Secretary A. Ashvathaman was asked for his thoughts, he defended Murugan, noting that Murugan holds a doctorate in law, while sarcastically questioning the qualifications of Thirumavalavan, implying he was an expert in “mass conversion” instead.

In response to Ashvathaman’s remarks, Vanni Arasu resorted to personal attacks, making disrespectful comments about Ashvathaman’s personal life, including suggesting he should first be a better husband. Hurt by these indecent remarks and the damage to her family’s reputation, Durga Ashvathaman filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women against Vanni Arasu for personal attacks and defamation.

Ashvathaman criticized VCK party chief Thirumavalavan on his official X account, stating, “If the State Deputy General Secretary of a party writes like a scribbler on a toilet wall, then just imagine how the party’s cadres (Nandu Sindu) will be! Vanni Arasu (@VanniKural) has proved the true nature of the VCK party. Is this your upbringing @thirumaofficial? My wife Durga Ashvathaman, has filed a complaint against VCK Party’s State Deputy General Secretary Vanni Arasu in the National Commission for Women for ‘personal attack and spreading defamation against dignity of women’.

In her letter to the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Durga Ashvathaman requested action against Vanni Arasu, the State Deputy General Secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Party (VCK), citing offenses such as personal attacks and the spreading of derogatory statements that undermine women’s dignity.

She stated, “l am a teacher. My husband Shri. A. Ashvathaman is an Advocate practising at Madras High Court and the State Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tamil Nadu. He has many political enemies because of his active participation in politics. But no one makes a personal attack on him. There is a party in Tamil Nadu called the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) means Freedom Cheetahs Party. As the name of the party itself has a wild animal’s name, their activities are also like that. Since that party does not have an individual ideology, it resorts to ‘individual personal attacks’ on others.”

“Vanniarasu, who is the Deputy General Secretary of VCK, is deliberately spreading baseless and false allegations against me and my family. He says I have filed a Dowry Harassment Complaint against my husband and he says many other unprintable slanders. He continues to spread these disgusting false slanders on television and social media. He also posts our wedding photos on social media and posts defamatory comments on them. It is causing me great grief. These people, who do not dare to oppose my husband ideologically, are doing the dirty and despicable job of spreading slander about the family and the women in the house. My husband and I got married in 2014. We have two children. For the couples getting married in our circle, the elders would show me and my husband as an example and wish them to live like us. But, The above-mentioned person is spreading slander against us for his cheap political gains.” She added.

My husband is doing many good things for people. He has done various public works like the Cuddalore Pondicherry Railway track, Ulundurpet Railway Stoppage, he fought and got justice for the worker who was killed in Cuddalore Cashew Mill by DMK’s Ex-MP TRV Ramesh, So he continues to work despite various threats. He filed a complaint against VCK’s leader Thirumavalavan in the Manu Smriti issue and an FIR has been filed based on his complaint. Last month in Bhuvanagiri, near Chidambaram, an innocent family who had come from Karaikal for the treatment of their daughter’s stroke, was victimized by VCK’s goondas. My husband continued to raise his voice for them and he made Tamilnadu police to file an FIR against VCK goondas. The family came to meet my husband and thanked him. Now, unable to tolerate this matter, the above-mentioned Vanniarasu has again started spreading his slanders (https://x.com/Vannikural/status/1848401051449495958). | came to know that there are many cases against the above-mentioned person including murder attempt murder passport forgery. So, the above-mentioned person Vanniarasu is a habitual offender,” she added.

“If such despicable acts are allowed, it will become their routine to try to stop the people in public life, by those cheap tricks like ‘focusing on the women of their family and spreading slander’. Therefore, | request you to take appropriate action against that person, Vanniarasu, for spreading unnecessary and false derogatory defamations against me and my family,” she finally said.

On 21 October 2024, Vanni Arasu via his official X account stated, “Do you know who he is? @Ashvathaman, first you should develop the ability to be a good husband to your wife.”

“Case No:1 On 14.2.2016, accused Ashvathaman filed a Habeas corpus petition in the Madras High Court, claiming that his father-in-law had forcibly taken away his wife Durga and eight-month-old child from their home, and his whereabouts are unknown. This Habeas corpus petition came up for hearing on 22.03.2016. The public prosecutor presented new information to the court, stating that no one forcibly took away the wife of accused Ashvathaman. The court was informed that the dowry complaint filed by his wife against Ashvathaman is pending in the Pattukottai All Women Police Station and the case is pending in the Pattukkottai court seeking divorce, while he is being beaten and harassed for asking for dowry.” He alleged.

“The judges heard this and said that this matter is entirely a family dispute. They dismissed the Habeas corpus petition of Accused Ashwathaman, stating that they cannot resolve the matter with a Habeas corpus petition. This accused, Ashvathaman, was the one who harassed and beat his wife, who was with an eight-month-old baby, for asking for dowry. He is now incarnated as a person fighting for women’s rights.” He stated.

Case No:2 Subramanian and Dhanapakiyam, a couple from Mathiyanur Colony in Ulundurpet Taluk, Kallakurichi District. They belong to the Adi Dravidian sect. They wanted to enroll their son, Sivanandan, in a teacher training school, so they went to the Arul Teacher Training Institute, which is run by his father, Allimuthu and accused Ashvathaman. On 13.6.2007, they paid 70,000 rupees and admitted their son. It was only later that they discovered the teacher training institute run by accused Ashvathaman and his father had inadequate facilities and was operating without proper accreditation. Consequently, the student’s mother, Dhanapakiyam, approached the institution to request a refund of the money and a transfer certificate.” He further stated

“They have been dragging their feet for a long time and are promised Dhanapakiyam  to give it on 4.1.2008. Ashvathaman and his father Allimuthu were present in the office. Allimuthu grabbed the saree of Dhanapakiyam and slapped her on the cheek saying, ‘Para thevdiya (a caste prostitute), we didn’t ask you to come to give money, we asked you to get rid of it’.  Dhanapakiyam fought to file a complaint against Allimuthu, who had transgressed saying, “If you ask for money like this, I will not let you go alive.” He further alleged.

“At that time, Ashvathaman, who was in the room, saying, ‘Only if we leave your alive, you will report to the police’, took an iron hammer and hit her on the head with the intention of killing and said, ‘get lost’. In that her skull was fractured and blood flowed out. On hearing the screams of Dhanapakiyam, people came inside rescued her and admitted to a hospital in a life-threatening condition. In this regard a case has been registered in Ulundurpet police station regarding this incident with number 12/08. Allimuthu is the first accused in this case and Ashvathaman is the second accused.” He added.

He further stated that a case has been registered against Allimuthu under Sections 294, 323, 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Violence Against Women Act. Additionally, a case of attempted murder has been filed against accused Ashvathaman under Section 307, which is still pending. Ashvathaman is allegedly delaying the trial by leveraging his authority and threatening Dhanapakiyam’s family with a rowdy gang, claiming his connections to the BJP and demanding that the case against him be withdrawn.

Fearing for their safety, the Dhanapakiyam family wrote a letter to State President Murugan, whom they see as a protector of Dalits. In the letter, they expressed that Aswathaman threatened them, stating that he would kill them with men from the Ottar caste, who are stonebreakers from his father’s lineage and also warned that if he sought help from the Vanniyar caste on his mother’s side, they would not be allowed to live in peace.

Naidu, Stalin Add To Clamour For More Children In South India

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s call to people to have more children and his Tamil Nadu counterpart M K Stalin’s ‘Why not 16 children’ remark has added to the clamour for demographic balance in south India, where the falling fertility rate is causing concern.

While Naidu’s stand for begetting more children is not new, his proposal to bring a law that one can contest panchayat or municipal elections only if he has more than two children underscores that he is keen to go beyond mere words.

For the last few years, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president has advocated an increase in the population rate in tune with the national average. However, Stalin’s call, which came close to Naidu’s latest assertion, appears to have pushed the whole debate.

Stalin on Monday suggested that perhaps newlyweds should consider having 16 children instead of ’16 forms of wealth’ as suggested in the Tamil blessing.

“That blessing does not mean you should have 16 children… but now a situation has arisen where people think they may have to, literally, raise 16 children and not a small family,” the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said at an event where 31 couples tied the knot under government-funded marriage scheme.

Stalin’s suggestion came a day after Naidu revealed that his government was planning legislation allowing only those with more than two children to contest local body elections.

“At one time, if you had more than two children, you couldn’t contest panchayat or municipal elections. Now I am bringing a new law. Only if you have more than two children can you contest panchayat or municipal elections and get more benefits for your family,” he said at a gathering at Amaravati.

The TDP-led NDA government repealed the legislation, which barred people with more than two children from contesting local body elections, in August.

“At one time, I called to observe family planning, but I am now appealing to people to beget more children,” said Naidu while calling for maintaining demographic balance.

Voicing concern over the fertility rate in the state declining to 1.5-1.7, he called for increasing it to 2.1 per cent, which is at par with the national fertility rate.

Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the average number of children a woman (15-49) would have if she lived to the end of her childbearing years and gave birth in line with current fertility rates.

Naidu reiterated that the population should be viewed as an asset rather than a burden.

“Population in north India is growing but it’s declining in south India. You should keep this in mind,” he had said at a public meeting in August.

“If we don’t think with foresight, the population will decrease. The ageing population will increase. If children are not born, who will care for the aged ones,” he asked.

He warned that the demographic crisis may push the state to a situation similar to that of Europe, China, and Japan, which have more ageing populations.

Andhra Pradesh is not the only state facing the situation. The average Total Fertility Rate of five southern states (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu) is 1.73 against the national average of 2.1.

In contrast, the average TFR of five big heartland states (Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Jharkhand) is 2.4.

According to officials, the average male reproductive age in Andhra Pradesh is 32.5 years which is likely to go up to 40 by 2047. Similarly, the female reproductive age in the state is now 29 years and this is expected to go up to 38 by 2047. It is believed the number of people who can contribute to economic development will come down drastically.

Currently, 11 percent of Andhra Pradesh’s population is aged over 60. This is likely to increase to 19 percent by 2047.

While Naidu, a key ally of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, voiced his views from a demographic perspective, Stalin and some other politicians from the region have been highlighting how the southern states will lose out in the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies because of the shrinking population.

An exercise to redraw the parliamentary constituencies based on population is due in 2026. This will increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 753. Regional parties in the South fear that this will result in a considerable jump in the number of seats in states with higher populations; the increase in the South will be marginal.

Leaders of these parties feel that southern states are being punished for effectively implementing family planning over the last few decades, as the states with a higher population density will have higher representation in the Lok Sabha.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao warned a few months ago that there would be a southern uprising if the representation of South Indians in Parliament decreased due to the proposed delimitation based on population.

Stating that southern states can’t be penalised for performing well to control population on the advice of the Government of India and in the interest of the nation, he said that cutting across political lines, people of South India will voice their concerns.

The BRS leader was reacting to AIMIM leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s comment that South India is in a powder keg regarding delimitation.

“If you think you will suppress our voices and our representation in the Parliament because of this delimitation, because of the population parameters you are taking then I will promise you, you will see a southern uprise because this is unfair. This is extremely unjust because it was the Government of India that wanted Indians to control their population,” KTR told a news conference.

Referring to the reported projection of seats in Parliament after delimitation, he remarked, “What will be more atrocious is that two states, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, after delimitation together will have more MPs than entire southern India.”

“States that have done well (in population control) because of the advice of the Government of India will now be penalised. Wisdom needs to prevail. We are all proud Indians. The South is the largest contributor to India’s economy. Nineteen per cent of the population contributes nearly 35 per cent of India’s GDP,” Rama Rao said.

NGO Arappor Iyakkam Accuses DMK Minister Raja Kannappan Of ₹411 Crore Land Grab, Complaint Filed With DVAC

NGO Arappor Iyakkam Accuses DMK Minister Raja Kannappan Of ₹411 Crore Land Grab, Complaint Filed With DVAC

The Arappor Iyakkam, an anti-corruption organization, has filed a complaint with the Director of Prevention of Corruption and Vigilance, alleging that DMK Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Higher Education, Raja Kannappan has embezzled government land valued at ₹411 crore through his sons. The complaint includes substantial evidence detailing the alleged encroachment of nearly five acres of government land located on Chennai’s GST Road.

Following the organization’s announcement to reveal details about the minister’s actions, a wave of excitement has surged not only within Tamil Nadu’s political circles but also among opposition members. The specific allegations against Minister Raja Kannappan have been made public via the Arappor Iyakkam’s X handle, which included documentation and evidence of the land he allegedly usurped.

The complaint states that Minister Raja Kannappan has unlawfully taken control of 4.75 acres of government land situated in Parangimalai Village, identified as Survey No. 1353, through his sons. The organization asserts that the land, which is adjacent to the BSNL Office between Alandur Metro and Nanganallur Metro, has been misappropriated due to the minister’s influence.

The complaint was submitted by Jayaraman, the leader of the Arappor Iyakkam, who called for immediate recovery of the government land and requested that a First Information Report (FIR) be filed against all involved public servants, including Minister Raja Kannappan. The complaint has been sent to several high-ranking officials, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Revenue Minister, demanding urgent action.

The complaint cites evidence from the Revenue Department that confirms the land in question is indeed government property. It references a letter from the Alandur Tahsildar’s office from 2015, which stated that several survey numbers, including 1352 and 1353, were government-leased lands and that no deed registration should occur for these parcels. The Tahsildar requested the cancellation of any prior registrations.

Historically, much of the government land in Parangimalai village was leased during British rule and was reclaimed by the government post-independence. The sons of Minister Raja Kannappan—Prabhu, Diwakar, and Dilip Kumar—are currently the directors and shareholders of Deccan Fun Island and Hotels Pvt. Ltd., a company allegedly implicated in the land acquisition.

From 1991 to 2018, the company reportedly executed several deeds to acquire land in the disputed survey numbers. The Arappor Iyakkam’s complaint includes evidence of these deeds, indicating a pattern of illegal land acquisition. The company was originally registered under a different name, Kathia, in the 1990s and has undergone changes in ownership, now directly tied to the minister’s sons.

Despite the 2015 notice from the Tahsildar, no actions have been taken to cancel the deeds registered for the encroached land. The complaint highlights that in 2018, Deccan Fun Island and Hotels Ltd. executed a deed claiming that the land had been recovered from a mortgage for ₹7 lakhs, despite the minister’s sons being current shareholders and directors.

The Pallavaram District Collector has previously indicated that 12,984 square feet of land in Survey No. 1352 was recovered last year; however, the encroached government land under Minister Raja Kannappan’s control has yet to be recovered.

https://twitter.com/SaffronTwitz/status/1848622400302419977

According to the current government guideline, the value of the disputed land is estimated at ₹11,000 per square foot, totaling approximately ₹226 crore. The market value in this prime location is believed to be at least ₹20,000 per square foot, bringing the total value of the land to around ₹411 crore. The complaint suggests that the Revenue Department’s inaction is due to political pressure exerted by Minister Raja Kannappan, who is accused of using his authority to amass considerable wealth through illicit means in the name of his sons.

The Arappor Iyakkam has attached extensive documentation—over 101 pages—as proof of their allegations, which can be accessed on their X page. They have demanded immediate recovery of the land and an investigation into the alleged misconduct of Minister Raja Kannappan, his sons, and the relevant officials who failed to act against this land grab.

Who Is Raja Kannappan?

Minister Raja Kannappan currently serves in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party as a minister. He has held various political positions, including serving as the Minister of Public Works, Highways, and Power in Jayalalithaa’s cabinet from 1991 to 1996. After forming his own party, Makkal Tamil Desam, in 2000, he allied with DMK and later rejoined them after a brief stint with the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

“Both My Sons Are Addicted To Alcohol, Drinking Since The Age Of 10”, Woman Sanitation Worker Laments Pleading To Save Her Children From TASMAC Liquor Addiction

Woman Sanitation Worker Laments Pleading To Save Her Children From TASMAC Liquor Addiction

In a heart-wrenching appeal that spotlights Tamil Nadu’s growing alcohol crisis, a woman sanitation worker from Tenkasi revealed the ordeal faced by thousands of vulnerable families devastated by addiction. Her emotional plea to shut down TASMAC liquor shops, delivered during a recent petition meeting, reveals the stark human cost of easily accessible alcohol, particularly for rural families.

The mother of two, who now lives in a cowshed after selling her cows for survival, shares how her sons’ early exposure to alcohol – beginning at age 10 – has trapped her family in a cycle of poverty and desperation. Her sons are aged 25 and 22 now.

Dravidian Parties & Liquor Addiction

The Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu have played a significant role in exacerbating the struggles of many women and their families, trapping them in poverty and perpetuating cycles of alcohol addiction.

In Tenkasi, a tragic story has emerged about a woman sanitation worker who is urgently appealing to the government to protect her children from addiction and to shut down all TASMAC liquor shops. Her situation highlights the harsh realities faced by many in rural Tamil Nadu over the past decade.

She revealed that both of her sons have developed an addiction to TASMAC liquor, with one starting as early as age 10, largely due to the shop’s closeness. Now, her family lives in a cowshed as their home deteriorates. The income she earns is often taken by her sons to support their drinking, forcing her to sell her cows just to survive. She believes that if the government closed the nearby TASMAC shop, her sons could find work and help rebuild their home, reducing her dependence on government support. Her poignant story draws attention and fueling calls for a ban on these liquor outlets.

The woman tearfully addressed the press during a petition meeting, saying, “Look at my hands sir, I work as a sanitation worker. My son has brought the family to streets by drinking (alcohol) since the age of 10. I have two sons, one is 22 and the other is 25 years old, both are addicted to liquor. If you see, yesterday I had 300 rupees, he took it and consumed alcohol. I don’t need any help from the government in constructing a house for me. Let them close the alcohol shops, my children will work and build a house for me. Don’t I need children for my last rites?”

She then petitioned for a new home, as her house, built 26 years ago, is now in a dilapidated state. Government officials who previously assessed her situation promised that a new home would be constructed for her. However, those promises have not materialized, and she now lives in a cowshed, relying on the sale of her two cows to survive.

TN Thowheed Jamath Seeks Supreme Court Intervention Over ‘Jai Shri Ram’ Slogan Incident In Karnataka Mosque

TN Thowheed Jamath Seeks Supreme Court Intervention Over 'Jai Shri Ram' Slogan Incident In Karnataka Mosque

According to a report in the Times of India, the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) has called for the Supreme Court’s intervention in a case involving two individuals who raised the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ inside a mosque in Karnataka. Mujibur Rahman, the general secretary of TNTJ, stated that the criminal case against these individuals should be quashed to restore justice.

During a press conference held after meeting with Puducherry Lok Sabha member V. Vaithilingam, Rahman expressed that the Karnataka High Court’s ruling has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community. “We plead with the Supreme Court to intervene and restore justice,” he remarked.

In addition, Rahman condemned the BJP-led NDA government’s recent decision to amend the Wakf Board Bill, which includes 44 changes that could potentially dismantle longstanding Islamic institutions in the country and diminish their powers. He emphasized the need for the parliamentary committee on the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, established by the Union government, to propose measures that will safeguard the properties of Wakf Boards.

Rahman criticized the Union government for attempting to amend the Wakf Board Bill without regard for Section 30 of the Wakf Act. He highlighted that the proposed amendments would prohibit non-Muslims from donating to Wakf Boards while allowing them to hold administrative positions within these boards.

Background

A few days ago, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the criminal case against two individuals accused of chanting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans inside a mosque, ruling that such behavior does not offend religious sentiments, according to a report. Justice M. Nagaprasanna, presiding over a single-judge bench, questioned how the slogans could potentially harm the feelings of any community.

The court highlighted that Hindus and Muslims in the region coexist peacefully. The accused faced various charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including outraging religious feelings, criminal trespass, public mischief, and criminal intimidation.

The judges noted the complainant’s acknowledgment of the harmonious relationship between Hindus and Muslims in the area, stating that allowing further legal action would constitute an abuse of the judicial process. Referencing a Supreme Court ruling, the bench pointed out that not every action is an offense under Section 295A of the IPC, which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to insult religious feelings.

“Section 295A deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs. It is not understandable as to how if someone shouts ‘Jai Shri Ram’ it would outrage the religious feeling of any class,” the court said in its order, according to a report in Live Law. The court further emphasized that given the complainant’s assertion of communal harmony, the incident could not reasonably lead to conflict.

The incident in question occurred on 24 September 2023, when the accused allegedly entered the mosque around 10:50 PM and shouted slogans while making threats. Initially reported as unknown individuals, they were later apprehended. However, the accused contested the charges and filed an appeal, resulting in the quashing of the case.

“Where Is Your Source Of Power To Interfere?” Madras HC Questions HR&CE’s Authority In Chidambaram Temple Affairs

After Claiming Sale Of 2000 Acres Of Temple Land By Podhu Dikshitars, HR&CE Claims 18 Acres Sold, Temple Activist Challenges HR&CE Allegation

The Madras High Court expressed skepticism on 21 October 2024 regarding the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department’s authority to intervene in the disciplinary actions taken by the Podhu Dikshidar Committee, which oversees the Sabanayagar temple, also known as the Thillai Natarajar temple, located in Chidambaram, Cuddalore district. Justice M. Dhandapani raised these concerns during the hearing of a writ petition filed by G. Nadraj Dikshidar in 2023. This petition sought enforcement of an order in his favour from the Joint Commissioner of the HR&CE department, while another petition from the Podhu Dikshidar Committee’s secretary aimed to nullify the Joint Commissioner’s order, citing jurisdictional issues.

Advocate K. Harishankar, representing the committee and assisted by G. Chandrashekhar, informed the court that the Supreme Court had previously affirmed the rights of the Podhu Dikshidars to manage the Chidambaram Sabanayagar temple in the case of Dr Subramanian Swamy vs. State of Tamil Nadu (2014). Therefore, he argued, the HR&CE department had no right to interfere in the committee’s disciplinary matters.

In contrast, Special Government Pleader N R R Arun Natarajan asserted that the HR&CE could step in if mismanagement or maladministration occurred within the temple’s operations. However, Justice Dhandapani questioned how the committee’s disciplinary action against one of its members could constitute mismanagement. He further probed the basis for the HR&CE department’s authority to revoke a suspension issued by the Podhu Dikshidar Committee. Where is your source of power to interefere with the disciplinary proceedings? The HR&CE service rules will apply only to the archakas appointed by the department, not to the Podhu Dikshidars, the judge stated.

The judge also highlighted that a Dikshidar facing disciplinary action should seek recourse through the courts rather than approaching the HR&CE department. The HR&CE cannot entertain such appeals just because a Dikshidar has approached them, he remarked. Advocate C. Kanagaraju, representing Nadraj, contended that the HR&CE could intervene only if the suspension was imposed for reasons unrelated to violations of the Agama Sastras specific to the Sabanayagar Temple. The judge indicated that this matter might ultimately need to be resolved by the Supreme Court.

The Podhu Dikshidar Committee had suspended Mr. Nadraj on 21 March 2022, for allegedly instigating criminal cases against fellow Dikshitars and causing chaos within the temple administration. Although the suspension was set for one year, the Joint Commissioner revoked it on 23 June 2023. Justice Dhandapani pointed out,Since the suspension period is over, what remains to be revoked? This indicates the HR&CE department’s eagerness to meddle in temple management. After acknowledging that Mr. Nadraj had resumed his duties, the judge closed both writ petitions but left the question of the HR&CE department’s jurisdiction to interfere in disciplinary matters open for consideration in future cases.

It is noteworthy that the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, which controls thousands of Hindu temples through questionable means, has no jurisdiction over the Chidambaram Sri Nataraja Temple. This temple has been managed by the Podhu Dikshitars, a Saivite denomination, for the past 20 centuries.
