Perpetrating prejudice and hate in times of a pandemic, Madras University might host USCIRF’s Hinduphobic conference

The United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), one of the highly deplorable bodies masquerading as champions of religious freedom has been in the news for quite some time. While the instance of the release of its annual report made it to the headlines, another event that is about to happen hasn’t grabbed much attention. Probably it is meant to be that way. This event is much more problematic than the release of the report.

The USCIRF along with professors affiliated with the University of California at Davis, Butler University, St. Michael’s College at Toronto, and Elon University have planned to conduct a seemingly Hindu-phobic conference at the University of Madras delusively titled “Conference in the Study of Religions of India”. This is yet another attempt by the body to attack India and Hinduism that could have serious repercussions on the pluralistic ethos of our country.

The conference is scheduled to happen between July 21 – 24, 2020 if the ensuing lockdown due to the pandemic eases.

The convener of this Hinduphobic conference is James Ponniah belonging to the Department of Christian Studies who also happens to be a priest of the Diocese of Sivagangai.

The co-convener is one Mr. Brian Pennington belonging to Elon University, which was started as a Christian university. Other organizers include Chad Bauman of Butler University, another Christian university which houses the Christian Theological Seminary and also offers joint programmes with it. CTS states its mission as “to form disciples of Jesus Christ for church and community leadership to serve God’s transforming of the world”.  It also goes on to say that “CTS is a sanctuary that welcomes both peacemakers and troublemakers”. Another person listed as an organizer is Reid Locklin of St. Michael’s College at Toronto, a Roman Catholic college.

The previous edition of the supposedly academic conference took place at the University of California at Davis. The webpage carried boldly calling for papers against Hinduism, that read, “We invite proposals representing a range of disciplinary and methodological approaches that focus on dishonesty, trickery or concealment by or by means of religious texts, practices, institutions, and individuals. Possible topics could include the changeable appearance of deities, religious charlatans, the question of the authenticity or inauthenticity of religious practices or entities, the theological concept of māyā, issues of religious identity such as hidden or false conversions, the elaborate ploys and deceptions of the Epics, secrecy, etc.” No other university in history had spewed such venom against another religion.

The mischievous intention of USCIRF

The USCIRF has its origins in the foreign policy agenda of the American establishment post 1945.

After the Second World War, American Universities started churning out literature attacking other cultures under the garb of South Asian Studies, African Studies, etc. The USCIRF was created as an exclusive body with the aim of targeting India and furthering Christianity.

Converting the indigenous population and killing their diverse ethnic culture has proven to be a tried and tested way to subjugate other nations and ensure their compliance, as they, upon changing their religious affiliations, turn into passive supporters of western foreign policy.

Thus, it is conspicuous that there is something larger is at play that is to happen through these conferences – an attempt at changing the religious demography of the country.

The hypocrite that USCIRF is

Interestingly, a document from the Congressional Record exposes the hypocritical nature of the body. Responding to a discrimination claim filed by a former employee, the Commission had argued that the USCIRF, an entity created by Congress to promote religious freedom, was not subject to Civil Rights Act of 1964, and hence it could discriminate against employees on the basis of religion without sanction. .

This is substantiated by the fact that not one Hindu has been made commissioner of this entity while every other minority has been represented in the past.

In another instance related to the same complaint filed by the former employee the USCIRF had defended Switzerland’s move to ban minarets on mosques and France’s moves to ban headscarves saying that “Switzerland had the right to resist the Islamification of Christian nations”.

Does USCIRF even have an iota of shame? If it had, it wouldn’t preach religious freedom, that too to a country like India.

Hiding behind ‘academic freedom ‘

Just as it uses the term “religious freedom” selectively on select countries, the term “academic freedom” is used by it to hide from its racist, bigoted and communal narratives.

The USCIRF is nothing but a body of Christian Crusaders, waging a religious war stealthily on native religions and cultures.

It is high time that the Government of India cancels the permission given to this conference of religious bigots. The reason stated should make it very clear that it is not because of the pandemic that they are being denied permission but because they are a pandemic who are no longer welcome in India.

Wake up, before it is too late!

Baloch journalist dies mysteriously in Sweden, raises suspicion about reason for death

Sajid Hussain, a Baloch journalist whose decomposed body was found on the Fyris River in Uppsala, Sweden has raised questions about the cause of his death, as he is suspected to have been killed by private agents who were working on the orders of the Pakistan embassy in Stockholm.

His disappearance for the last fifty days was a subject of investigation for the Uppsala police, working under the Swedish National Unit against Organized Crime (NUOC). The taking over of Hussain’s case by NUOC, Sweden, becomes significant as it deals with combating organised, cross-border crime and to seek international co-operation between prosecutors.

Official sources have reported that they have found video footage of March 2nd from surveillance cameras, concluding that Hussain had taken a train from Stockholm to Uppsala, and handing over a bag to people in a rented apartment. He was last seen at a petrol pump, post which he had gone completely missing.

After moving from Pakistan, Hussain had started an online magazine called the Balochistan Times reporting about the forced missing cases in Balochistan.

Hussain’s associate from Sweden has been quoted saying “He went missing on 2 March, his body was found on 23 April. Where was he all these days? He knew how to swim, he was very much happy in his life. It is clear that he was executed somewhere else and the body dumped in the river. Such crimes do not take place in Sweden. It is a message that has been given by the ISI to all the dissenters.”

“He had good contacts in Balochistan and would get solid information from the ground and develop a story. Obviously, this was not liked by people sitting in GHQ, Rawalpindi,” his associate added.

In a letter to the EU, officials from the European commission had accused the ISI of silencing human rights defenders and journalists in Europe. Investigations are underway to uncover this issue.

19 sailors killed in ‘Friendly’ Iranian crossfire

Iranian media reported an accident at the Gulf of Oman, in which nineteen sailors have been killed and 15 have been injured during a naval ‘friendly fire’.

The Konarak, an Iranian support ship, was hit by a new anti-ship test missile during a naval exercise by the frigate Jamaran on Sunday. This accident happened near the Strait of Hormuz, a point of strategic importance as one fifth of the world’s oil passes through it.

The Navy reported that investigations have begun on this issue and that the ship has been docked ashore.

Iran’s navy said in a statement that, “On Sunday evening… during naval exercises performed by a number of the naval force’s vessels in the waters of Jask and Chabahar, an accident happened involving the Konarak light support ship vessel, causing the martyrdom of a number of brave members of the naval forces”, further adding that the Konarak had been taken to a port for “technical inspection”, without mentioning about the accident.

Iran is seeking to broaden the sphere of its naval operations and to upgrade its warships’ armament. The frigate Jamaran is part of a new class of home-built vessels intended to set a new course for Iran’s navy.

This isn’t the first time that the armed forces of Iran have gotten into trouble. In January 2019, they had fired two surface-to-air missiles at an unidentified target, bringing down a Ukrainian airliner, killing all those on board.

Demand to do away with Halal picks up, #BoycottHalalProducts trends

Netizens in India have started demanding a boycott of Halal meat and products saying that non-Muslims should not be allowed to consume food that is prepared according to Islamic rites.

This demand comes following the arrest of a Chennai bakery owner who in an ad for his shop had mentioned “Made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff”.

The episode has led to people raise questions about the prevalence and endorsement of Halal meat and products in food outlets, including government owned institutions.

Halal in Arabic means ‘permissible’. In the Halal method of slaughtering, the animal or the bird is killed by cutting through its jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe that drains out all the blood, leading to its slow death. Halal certification mandates that the process must be performed only by a Muslim and the name of Allah must be invoked while slaughtering. Any deviation from the mandated process renders the meat ‘haram’ (forbidden).

Halal is seen as imposition of Islamic religious beliefs and practices over non-Muslims. It is also seen as leading to monoculturalism and monopoly as they restrict culinary diversity and keep non-Muslims out of business and employment opportunities.

Constitutional experts and lawyers have even pointed out that endorsement of Halal certification and serving Halal food is illegal and unconstitutional. They have pointed that it violates Article 25 and Article 27 as it violates the freedom to profess, practice and propagate one’s own religion and makes a person pay tax the proceeds of which are diverted to promotion of one particular religion.

Many have come out to clarify that they are not against Muslims eating Halal meat but only against the imposition of Halal on non-Muslims.

A few years back in 2013, Halal labelling was withdrawn from Sri Lanka after Buddhist monks campaigned against Halal meat and other products with Halal certification saying that they cannot be forced consume products prepared according to Islamic rites.

It must be noted that Halal is not just restricted to food. There are Halal medicines, Halal cosmetics, Halal clothing, Hala hotels, Halal land and even Halal tour packages!

Chennai City to see spike in cases for few more days, says Radhakrishnan

Special Nodal Officer Mr. J. Radhakrishnan told press persons on Sunday that only 2 wards reported more than 200 cases of the virus. He said that as many as 119 of 200 wards in the city reported less than 10 cases. Around 60 wards in the city reported 10-30 cases.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the number of cases is likely to increase for another 5-6 days with increase in testing in areas like Thiruvanmiyur. He added that targeted testing in certain clusters like north Chennai had to be done for the past 9 days to contain the spread of the disease.

“Many people are concerned about the rise in trend in positive cases in Chennai. We cannot stop testing contacts of those who tested positive”, he said.

He mentioned that the death rate in the city went down to 0.68%. NGOs are being roped in to create behavioural change among people, he said.

“This is a war against a pandemic. All of us are soldiers in this war. Many people do not wear mask and do not maintain social distancing. More than 30% of the residents do not wear mask. The spread can be reduced by wearing a mask and social distancing”, he said.

Pakistan’s response to India’s move goes wrong, loses ‘weather report battle’, becomes butt of jokes and memes

In yet another major embarrassment to Pakistan, Radio Pakistan, the country’s national broadcaster, embarrassed itself and the country by committing a major faux-pas while responding to India’s move to report weather for Gilgit-Baltistan.

“In Ladakh, maximum temperature is -4 degree centigrade and minimum temperature is -1 degree centigrade.”, tweeted the Pakistani handle.

However, -4 degree centigrade was lower than -1 degree centigrade, and therefore cannot be the maximum temperature. Netizens observed the mistake and quickly pointed it out. Soon, it led to Pakistan becoming the butt of jokes and memes.

Pakistan’s move comes in the wake of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) referring to its meteorological sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir as “Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad.” The Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had rejected India’s move and issued a statement regarding the same.

IMD’s move to include Gilgit Baltistan and Muzaffarabad comes days after the Supreme Court of Pakistan allowed Islamabad to amend a 2018 administrative order to conduct General Elections in the region.

India lodged a strong protest over the court ruling and said that such actions by Pakistan can neither hide the illegal occupation of parts of Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by Pakistan nor the gross human rights violations, exploitation and denial of freedom to the people residing in Pakistan occupied territories for the past seven decades. It strongly condemned Pakistan over its efforts to bring “material change” to territories under its “illegal and forcible” occupation.

Looks like, apart from lessons on democracy, human rights, Pakistan needs lessons on integers too!

The workers engaged in a thankless job, were moved by their gesture.

Kamal and Vijay Sethupathi’s case taken, parody version of their call goes viral

Popular Youtube Channel Parithabangal has come out with a latest video that features a parody version of the video call between Kamal and Vijay Sethupathi.

The video titled “Madhupiriyar Paavangal” has clocked close to 7 million views in just 15 hours with more than 71 thousand ‘likes’ and over a thousand ‘dislikes’.

In the video, Youtube stars Gopi and Sudhakar can be seen taking the case of Kamal and Vijay Sethupathi with former playing Kamal Hasan and the latter playing Vijay Sethupathi. Gopi can be seen doing an impeccable impression of Kamal.

The portions where Gopi (Kamal) talks about various skills that he is capable of like – making scary eyes, looking like WWE star Undertaker, whistling through his nose (he goes on to whistle numbers from Nayagan and Dasavatharam), and him capable of ‘touching his nose with his tongue’ turns out to be a laugh riot. He adds that time has come for actors like Sudhakar (Vijay Sethupathi) to do it.

The video also has a portion where Gopi mimics DMK leader M.K. Stalin and the recent protest that he conducted against the opening of TASMAC shops.

The duo also takes a dig at how in the original video Kamal kept on interrupting without listening to Vijay Sethupathi’s question completely.

The video call between Kamal Hasan and Vijay Sethupathi had courted controversy for Kamal’s lewd comments over Saint Thyagaraja. Several Carnatic musicians lashed out at Kamal for calling the Saint a beggar, who is considered to be one of the trinities of Carnatic music.
