Nepal faces backlash over controversial bill to edit their borders

On Saturday, the Parliament of Nepal unanimously voted for the bill to update their constitution which allowed them to redraw their political map. The amended map shows a sliver of land northwest of Nepal as its border. This includes areas disputed with India, the speaker of the national legislature said. This changes the position of Nepal in the case of its dispute with India over their shared border significantly, straining ties between the South Asian neighbours.

While the new map has been passed at an overwhelming majority in the lower house, this will become official only if the upper house, as well as the President approve of it. Talking about this significant decision, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli spoke of the prospect of talks with India to sort out this age-old issue.

“It is a good thing that there is unity,” Oli told reporters. “Now there will be talks (with India).”

This decision was, however, faced with heavy backlash from India’s foreign ministry, as it rejected Nepal’s new map, arguing that the addition of Indian territory is not based on historical fact or evidence. Anurag Srivastava, India’s foreign ministry spokesman issued a statement that said, “It is also violative of our current understanding to hold talks on outstanding boundary issues”.

Meanwhile in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, people flocked the streets in support of this decision, painting the map on the streets and holding candles.

SpaceX launches a ‘piggyback’ mission with 58 internet satellites

Following its recent success with the launch of Falcon 9, SpaceX launched dozens more of its Starlink broadband internet satellites, plus three piggyback satellites for Planet — marking the first of the company’s in-house rideshare deliveries to orbit on Saturday. This has been termed a historic feat, since it has become the first non-governmental organisation to have ever accomplished this.

The program was to be launched scheduled for June 12 at 5:12am ET but was pushed back was rescheduled to Saturday, although NASA and SpaceX have failed to reveal the reason behind this.

The Nasa Kennedy Space Center website states: “This will be the 9th mission in support of the constellation of networked satellites known as Starlink. The goal of Starlink is to create a network that will help provide internet services to those who are not yet connected, and to provide reliable and affordable internet across the globe.”

Starlink is a controversial scheme that aims to beam Wi-Fi to people from space using a “mega constellation” of thousands of satellites. Controversial because these satellites will be placed in lower earth orbit making it look brighter than stars thus acting as a hindrance to stargazers and astronomers. This is the brainchild of Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, whose company has launched more than 400 satellites ever since its conception.

Queen Elizabeth celebrates her ‘official’ birthday in a muted ceremony

Dressed in a sombre jade Stewart Parvin coat and matching hat by Rachel Trevor-Morgan, Queen Elizabeth celebrated her birthday on Saturday. This was her first public appearance after the lockdown had been enforced.

It is to be noted that the Queen celebrates two birthdays: her actual date of birth on 21st April, and the second Saturday of June, which is her official birthday.

Usually the ceremony is marked by the royal family gathering outside the Buckingham palace, to greet the crowds, and watching the fly-past. This year, instead of the regular Trooping the Colour ceremony that usually marks such royal events, it was replaced by a muted version of the same. A small, brief, military ceremony with no members of the public present was conducted to uphold the lockdown measures.

The Welsh Guard soldiers staged this ceremony, for which the Queen had worn the brooch of the Welsh Guards – a diamond leek. These soldiers were those who used to man the Covid-19 test centres.

The Queen took her place on the dais at the quadrangle in the Windsor castle, post which she was given the royal salute by the officers, and the national anthem was played by the Household Division. The Household Division – made up of the British Army’s most prestigious regiments – has a close affinity with the Queen and was keen to mark the milestone with a ceremony dubbed mini-Trooping.

Meanwhile, the UK currently has a recorded cases of 292, 950 and a death toll of 41,481 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Austria plans a one-off payment coronavirus relief to cushion the blow

The Austrian government has planned a one time payment mechanism to those who are unemployed and jobless to help survive during the crisis situation caused by the pandemic. Measures to be approved at a cabinet meeting next week include payments of 450 euros ($506) to the unemployed and 360 euros per child under 18.

The government also intends to cut the lowest tax bracket from 25% to 20% so as to make a retroactive change from the start of this year.

Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, in an interview, said, the coalition government of conservatives and Greens would have more to say about the costs of the measures when the meeting wraps up on Tuesday. He added that value-added tax (VAT) for restaurants and the culture sector will be cut to 5%, to help with the restoration of the economic situation. Since the Austrian economy is predicted to drop by 7.2% this year in the absence of a second wave, the mildest outbreak could cause the value to shrink to 9.2%.
