Twitter celebrates Obama on Trump’s birthday by trending hashtag

US President Donald Trump’s birthday on Sunday was celebrated in a rather unconventional manner on Twitter, and hundreds took to Twitter to celebrate Former President Barack Obama, with a trending #AllBirthdaysMatter hashtag.

Several phrases began trending on Twitter early on Sunday, including “Obama Day June 14th,” “Obama Appreciation Day,” “Obama Day USA” and “Happy Birthday Obama,” in addition to “All Birthdays Matter.” Some celebrities and politicians joined the trend, including George Takei, Ken Jeong, Billy Baldwin, and others. This was done in an attempt to condemn the #AllLivesMatter which was created in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Some people also used the hashtag to honour the lives of Black people who have died after incidents with the police, such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and many more.

Although this wasn’t a sudden tweetstorm since for weeks, notes have been flooding people’s direct messages urging them to participate in this social media takeover.

Ever since he departed from The White House, Obama has maintained a special place in fans’ hearts. More recently, he gave an empowering speech at a virtual town hall meeting following the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died at the hands of police brutality in Minneapolis. While speaking about the importance of hope, the father of two explained that he was proud of young people’s ability to voice their concerns.

Beijing increases lockdown restrictions due to second wave of coronavirus outbreak

One of Beijing's largest markets, Xinfadi in Fengtai district, was shut down on 13 June, and the district placed under lockdown following the confirmation of new domestic coronavirus cases which were linked to the Xinfadi market. On Monday, authorities announced 49 new cases, 36 of which were linked to the Xinfadi seafood supermarket in Beijing’s southern Fengtai district.  Samples taken from the market have shown traces of the virus on imported fish and meat. Yang Peng, an epidemiologist with the Beijing city government said the virus might have come from overseas but more investigation was needed.

About 139 people who have come in close contact to these people have been quarantined and about 10,000 who work in the market are to be tested.

Following this, officials in Beijing have reimposed lockdown, as health officials have raised fears about a second wave of coronavirus outbreak. The city which had also been under lockdown for 55 days has only just returned to normalcy, when there were new cases reported because of citizens returning from abroad.

The new cases in Beijing are especially alarming given the strict travel restrictions and quarantine measures the city imposed to prevent cases from other parts of the country spreading to the capital. Xu Hejian, Beijing city’s spokesperson, said, “The risk of the epidemic spreading is very high, so we should take resolute and decisive measures,” terming this an ‘extraordinary period’.

China, which has reported a total of 83,000 COVID infections and an official death toll of 4,634, has prided itself with containing the virus. But analysts and researchers have ever since warned them about a second wave of infections, while also raising doubts about the statistics released.

Experts fear that pandemic could remove war-stricken Yemen from the map

In what could be one of world’s worst-affected coronavirus outbreaks, Yemen is facing a staggering death toll, which could possibly spell doomsday for the country.

Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis are under the knife after the United Nations’ funding got slashed for the war-stricken country. The cuts came after UN appeals for $2.42 billion in funding fell short by about 50% this week. Due to this, many malnutrition centers and hospitals have closed due to funding shortfalls and doctors’ concerns about their personal safety from coronavirus.

“The worst-case scenario — which is the one we’re facing now — means that the death toll from the virus could exceed the combined toll of war, disease and hunger over the last five years [in Yemen],”  said Lise Grande, the head of the UN’s humanitarian operations in Yemen.

The official death toll of the country due to coronavirus is only 127. This is because, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is also experiencing a Chikungunya outbreak and more than 100,000 known cholera cases across the nation. Flash floods this spring destroyed the city’s power grid. The combined death toll due to these reasons is said to exceed the five-year war casualty record.

Experts fear that if this situation continues, the country may be wiped out from the world map, because it is ill-equipped to handle three outbreaks and a war combined.

AstraZeneca signs deal to provide 400 million coronavirus vaccine doses to Europe

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has signed a 400 million dose contract with European countries to supply coronavirus vaccines. The British drugmaker is to use the formula developed by Oxford University, in addition to expanding production. Their spokesperson was reported saying that this will be provided without profit due to the pandemic.

While the vaccine is still in its laboratory phase, if the trials come out satisfactory, deliveries are expected to be rolled out by 2020.

The deal is the first contract signed by Europe’s Inclusive Vaccines Alliance (IVA), a group formed by France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to secure vaccine doses for all member states as soon as possible. The vaccines are for all EU member states. The four nations that agreed the deal will pay for the total amount, which has not been disclosed, and the scheme allows other countries to join it under the same conditions, a source from the Italian health ministry is reported to have said.

The company’s CEO Pascal Soriot said, “This will ensure that hundreds of millions of people in Europe will have access to this vaccine, of course, if it works and we will know that by the end of summer”. He added that the alliance “will work together with the European Commission and other countries in Europe to ensure everybody across Europe is supplied with the vaccine”.

Notably, other countries like China, Brazil, Japan and Russia have also expressed interest in this.

EU reopens borders with the travel ban still in place

Most of Europe opened its borders on Monday, easing lockdown restrictions that had been put in place for the sake of the coronavirus pandemic. Countries like Spain still remain closed, fearing a second wave. Spain will allow no foreign tourists until June 21, with exceptions on some Spanish islands. While the travel ban is yet to be lifted, the pre-pandemic modes of travel are a long mile away.

This comes as a result of European Commissioner Ylva Johansson urging European countries to release border controls and gradually open it for other countries starting from July.

The Schengen area of 22 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland operates control-free crossings, but they have been mostly closed for three months to all but goods traffic and critical workers. This move could greatly help with their attempts to recover their economy, since a chunk of their income comes from the entertainment and tourism sector.

Before the crisis, an average of 3.5 million people crossed an internal EU border every day, according to a European Parliament report last year, some 1.7 million of the commuting to work, most of whom are working from home.

Thailand reports zero new COVID-19 cases and deaths

Thailand reported no new coronavirus cases on Monday, marking the second time since no cases were reported. This marks 21 days without local transmission of coronavirus, maintaining the country’s reported cases of 3,135 confirmed cases and 58 fatalities.

Any new cases that were detected were made to quarantine since the cases had been citizens who had returned from abroad.

Following this, the nationwide curfew was lifted on June 15, allowing establishments to function normally, mainly restaurants that supplied alcohol. Other establishments allowed to reopen on Monday were schools with fewer than 120 students, exhibition halls, music concerts, film productions, playgrounds, amusement parks, and sports competitions without spectators. Notably, pubs and bars are to remain closed.

Thailand was the first Asian country after China to have reported cases of coronavirus and has been considered a success story ever since, for having contained it.
