UK’s coronavirus death toll rises

The United Kingdom’s department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) recorded an increase in the death toll in the country, stating that there was a rise in the number of deaths in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus. The reported number was 42,589, from the previous day’s record of 42,461.

It was reported that a total of 7,714,201 tests have been carried out and 303,110 cases have been confirmed positive. Surprisingly, the Government released numbers do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 53,000.

These statistics come as a threat to the government’s move to reduce the two-meter distancing norms. As this is being faced with strong opposition, any change in decision will be made known in the next few days, as said by the government scientific advisor.

The chancellor has also been urged to consider a four-day working week to overhaul the economy, since this could encourage more people to come and rejoin the workforce.

5-8 million years old fossil of elephant found in UP

A fossil of an elephant was found from the Siwalik sediments exposed in the area of Badshahi Baug in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur.

The fossil is said to be five to eight million years old and is from the Dhok Pathan formation of Siwalik range.

VK Jain, Chief Conservator, Saharanpur told, “We have found a fossil of a stegodon, a variety of the elephant which used to be found at an early age. The fossil is from Dhok Pathan formation of Siwalik. The estimated age of the specimen may range from five to eight million years.” Jain stated the fossil was found a week before but only after verification from Wadia Institute they were able to declare the found specimen a relic.

He said, “We have consulted the Wadia Institute and a scientist told us that this fossil is a middle-age deposition. This is the first fossil of its kind and we would like to preserve the fossil and increase our research because if the fossil is found, there is a possibility that we would be able to find more too.” Jain further said, “It is a huge achievement for us and we would like to increase the number of scientists in the study to discover more fossils.”

Hubble Space Telescope brings new stars to light

The new Hubble Space Telescope has recently revealed few images of haywire stars. The telescope has used its full range of imaging capabilities to locate and capture these stars and planetary nebulae. The images clearly show 2 new and young planetary nebulae around the space.

The telescope has depicted 2 young nebulae, NGC 6302, dubbed the Butterfly Nebula, and NGC 7027. Both of these planetary nebulae are dustiest among the known planetary nebulae. Both of these nebulae contain unusual masses of gas in it.

The Hubble Space Telescope is known to have depicted these images much before, but not for a long time. This time it has clicked them with the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument using its full wavelength. This telescope reveals in full detail how both the nebulae are falling apart gradually and the changes that are occurring from the past couple of years.

Researchers have detected that at the core or heart of the nebula, there were 2 stars that were continuously orbiting around each other. This is been concluded from the bizarre shape of the nebula. The NGC 6302, also known as the Butterfly Nebula, is exhibiting reddish-orange S-shaped patterns (due to ionised atom emissions) that are clearly seen in the images.

The NGC 7027 resembles a jewel bug, which indicates that it is slowly puffing away its mass in quiet, spherically symmetric pattern for centuries.

These nebulae are said to be rarely watched and being captured by.

CPI brings up US ploy in India-China standoff, CPI(M) wants India to abide by ‘Panchsheel’

The All Party Meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday saw leaders of different parties expressing their views and questions over the Galwan Valley skirmish. Most leaders from different parties expressed confidence in the steps taken by the government and extended their support.

However, CPI leader D. Raja had said that India should not fall for US ploy to take us on their side.

He said “We need to resist US efforts to drag us into their alliance”.

CPI(M) leader while extending support to the government’s approach also spoke of ‘Panchsheel’ policy, the five principles of coexistence formally enunciated between India and China in 1954.

Both the CPI and CPI(M) did not condemn or register their protest or questioned China’s action on the Galwan Valley.

During the All Party Meeting Prime Minister Modi mentioned that the Indian Army who were martyred in action had taught a lesson to those who had cast an eye on our Motherland before laying down their lives.

Mr. Modi added that intensive patrolling due to improved infrastructure and supply chains has allowed better monitoring.

“If they kill one of ours, kill five of theirs”, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh says

Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday called for a strong response to the Chinese aggression in Ladakh that resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers. He said “If they kill one of ours, kill five of theirs”.

He also raised questions about sending Indian army to defend Line of Actual Control without weapons. He went on to say “Send RSS workers with lathis instead, not our soldiers”.

He said “I don’t know who issued this orders. Troops should always patrol with weapons. The Chinese came prepared, our boys were not prepared. My first posting was in 1963 on the Chinese border, none of us went out without our weapons”.

Even Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had raised questions about sending the soldiers unarmed. However, External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar clarified that the soldiers always carry weapons and that it was the 1996 and 2005 agreements that prevented them from firing.

The Punjab CM said that the Chinese were following a ‘salami policy’ by taking the Indian territory slice by slice. He called for giving a befitting response along the lines of Balakot air strikes.

“What do you mean you can’t do a Balakot? What are the Biharis and Punjabis sitting there for? The moment this incident this took place, there should have been a reaction? You think we should chicken out to the Chinese?” he said.

Captain Amarinder Singh’s remarks came following the violent clash at Galwan Valley between the Indian and Chinese troops.

Court tells DMK MP R.S. Bharathi to speak responsibly

The Madras High Court on Friday told DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP and Organizing Secretary RS Bharathi that he should make responsible statements considering befitting of the position he holds. The court made the observation while reserving orders on the plea moved by CCB challenging RS Bharathi’s bail order granted by a subordinated court for the case registered against him under the SC/ST Act for his remarks against Scheduled Caste Community.

Speaking at an event in the DMK youth wing headquarters, in February of this year, the DMK MP had said it was due to the alms (picchai) given by the Dravidian Movement that persons from SC community became judges.

Justice N Sathish Kumar said to senior counsel R Shanmugasundaram “Being in a responsible position, he should make responsible statements. Kindly advise your client not to make any derogatory remarks against any group of people in the future”.

V Raghavachari, the counsel for Kalyana Sundaram of Adi Dravidar Tamizhar Katchi, the de-facto complainant in the case, submitted that the DMK MP was habitual in making derogatory remarks. “Earlier it was against Brahmins who constitute 5% of the population, now it is against the SC/ST community who form 26% of the population”, he said.

Mr. Raghavachari argued that RS Bharathi wasn’t a layman and that he is a member of the Rajya Sabha also a practising lawyer. The counsel noted that the SC/ST Act is a special legislation and the rule that “bail is a right and jail is an exception” would not apply to offences under the Act. He said that the power of investigating officer cannot be interdicted by court of law. Addition Public Prosecutor representing the CCB said that granting bail without giving an opportunity to the complainant would set a wrong precedent.

The court has reserved the orders on the plea without mentioning a date.

“Rahul Gandhi.. Don’t indulge in politics in this”: Soldier’s father hits out at Congress leader

Rahul Gandhi who has been consistently tweeting about the Galwan Valley clash trying to pin the blame on the Modi government has now been called out by a soldier’s father who has asked him to not indulge in politics over the death of soldiers.

Earlier, the Congress MP from Wayanad had tweeted a video of Balwant Singh, a father of a soldier, with the caption “It’s sad to see senior GOI ministers reduced to lying in order to protect the PM. Don’t insult our martyrs with your lies.” In the video Balwant Singh who is mentioned as the father of a wounded soldier can be heard saying that he received a call from his son who was admitted in a hospital in Leh. Balwant had said that his son had mentioned in the call that he was getting treatment.

“We were 300-400 people, they were of 2000-2500.. They came suddenly and attacked us with rod, sticks and stones. We didn’t have anything. When they started hitting a lot, I escaped. God saved me. I have 10-12 stitches. I have been hurt in hands and legs.”, Balwant Singh can be heard saying in the video quoting his son.

However, the ANI has released a video of the father of the injured soldier in Galwan Valley clash attributing it to an amateur video source. In this video, the father can be heard saying “The Indian Army is a strong army and can defeat China. Rahul Gandhi don’t indulge in politics in this…my son fought in the army and will continue fighting in the army”

This response of the father has come in light of the Congress leader’s earlier tweet where he had mentioned that Ministers of Government of India were lying about the incident in Galwan Valley “to protect the PM”.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Jaishankar had responded to Rahul Gandhi’s another tweet in which he had raised question about our soldiers being unarmed. Mr. Jaishankar replied that All troops on border duty always carry arms, especially when leaving post” and that the soldiers at Galwan valley too had arms but it was the 1996 and 2005 agreements that stopped both sides from firing.
