North Korea suspects its first COVID-19 case, officially

North Korea suspected its first COVID-19 case as a defector returned from South Korea with symptoms of COVID-19 after illegally crossing the border three years ago.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held an emergency politburo meeting in light of this.

It is a “critical situation in which the vicious virus could be said to have entered the country,” he said as he declared a state of emergency and imposed a lockdown on the border city of Kaesong.

It was not sure whether the person went through a test. However, “uncertain result was made from several medical check-ups of the secretion of that person’s upper respiratory organ and blood,” reported Korean Central News Agency.

This prompted officials to quarantine the person and investigate anyone he may have been in contact with.

Russia had given North Korea a significant number of testing kits when thousands were quarantined. Restrictions have recently eased.

If this case is confirmed, this will be North Korea’s first COVID-19 case acknowledged by officials.

Kim Jong Un recently started a campaign to criticize defectors calling them human scum.

He has ordered an investigation into the military units along the border where the person was suspected of crossing. This is to  “administer a severe punishment and take necessary measures,” he said.

Man dies outside MP Govt Hospital as he did not have ₹5 to pay for hospital admission

A man called Sunil Rajak had died outside a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district, after having left untreated under a tree for 12 hours. It was reported that he had suffered this plight as his wife had not been able to pay ₹5 as hospital admission fee.

The victim’s wife Aarti was reported saying that she had been asked to go back and arrange the cash despite repetitively telling that her husband was still breathing and to save him. However none had stepped out to help her even after he had passed away. It was reported by the Times of India that no one had listened to her pleas even after her husband had died. She had been struggling to move her husband’s corpse with no one to help her.

While some reports claim that she had been unable to pay the hospital fees, some others had said that consultation fee in government hospitals is usually free.

Madhya Pradesh’s former Chief Minister Kamal Nath Express his anger in Twitter over this issue. In his tweet, he said, ‘This is not how I had left the state. You were busy in the auction of MLAs but a woman in Guna, carrying a toddler, kept pleading all day to save her husband’s life. He wasn’t treated because he didn’t have ₹ 5 to buy a parcha. He gasped to death in front of his wife. Is this the condition of the state under the Shivraj government?’. Meanwhile, the Guna administration has ordered a magisterial probe.

IIT Kharagpur develops low-cost rapid test kits for Corona virus

A research team from IIT Kharagpur have developed a unique portable, low-cost rapid test kit for diagnosing coronavirus infection. This kit is to be priced at ₹400 per test and would give the test results in less that one hour as reported by ZeeNews. The complete analysis can be conducted on this device, with the results displayed on an app downloadable on smartphones.

This new technology can detect viral genomic RNA in an ultra-low-cost portable enclosure as an alternative to highly expensive RT-PCR machine. The technology essentially deploys a simple disposable paper-strip for chemical analysis and visualization of results.

“The same portable unit can be used for a large number of tests, on mere replacement of the paper cartridge after each test,” said IIT Kharagpur.

The kit has been developed by a research team led by IIT Kharagpur professors Suman Chakraborty and Dr Arindam Mondal. It was then validated to produce results in a short span. The institute’s Director tweeted about this, saying, “This unique innovation is aligned with the Institutional vision to develop high-end healthcare technologies that can be afforded by the ailing common people all around the globe at virtually no cost, and is likely to make a significant breakthrough in global viral pandemic management.”

This new test relatively reduces the time taken for the test results to be produced. It is said to have the capability of detecting unforeseen viral pandemics in the coming years that may potentially endanger human lives time and again.

After this, he was taken to the Primary Health Centre nearby, following which he was rushed to the Government General Hospital in Tenkasi, where he had died.

His relatives had refused to accept his body. They had claimed a compensation of ₹50 lakh from the State Government and employment for a member from his family. IIT Madras startup to develop wristband that detects COVID-19

Muse Wearables has raised ₹ 22 crore to develop a wristband that can identify COVID-19 symptoms at an early stage.

The wristband will be Bluetooth-enabled. It can be connected to any smartphone using the Muse Health App. User vitals and activity data are saved on the phone and the remote server.

The COVID-19 detector wristband carries sensors to detect temperature of the skin, heart rate, and saturation of blood oxygen. These sensors can even work remotely and track these vitals to ensure early diagnosis of symptoms.

The app will also get alerts from the Arogya Setu app which will notify users immediately when they enter a  hotspot or a containment zone.

They will also be able to raise an emergency alert  when faced with any difficulty such as when the body temperature rises above the desired threshold.

“We are targeting two lakh product sales this year with plans to achieve 10 lakh product sales by 2022 across the world. The investors believe in our innovations and believe that we can create a huge difference in the consumer tech space and we have been able to generate funding of ₹22 crore,” said K L N Sai Prasanth, an IIT Madras alumni.

This wristband will cost  ₹ 3,500 and will be available for use across 70 countries by August.

Dharavi takes the lead in plasma donation

Brihanmumbai  Municipal Commission set up a screening camp for plasma donation at Kamraj School and those recovered from the virus were asked to donate blood to treat infected people.

The samples will then be screened at KEM, Sion, or Nair hospitals.

Despite the rapid spread of COVID-19, Asia’s largest slum seems to lead in plasma donation.

After the rapid spread of Covid-19 and successful Chase-the-Virus strategy, Dharavi seems to be leading in plasma donation.

Though there was a rise in April-May,  it was brought down after the Chase-the-Virus initiative involving 4 Ts – Tracing, Track, Testing and Treating was implemented.

On the first day of the camp, it is reported that at least 49 people showed up to donate blood.

According to BMC officials, the camp will continue for a few more days expecting to collect 350 samples.

Details of prospective donors were noted and blood samples were collected. People with co-morbidities were not registered for plasma  donations.

When the BMC contacted the recovered people, Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavakar of G-North ward said that more than 70% of the cases fell in the age group of 21-60 years old.

He added that the chances of the young carrying co-morbidities is less and must step forward to donate blood.

A R Rahman talks about Bollywood’s increasing ‘gang’ culture on talent

Academy Award and Grammy Award winning music composer A R Rahman in a recent interview with RJ Suren of Radio Mirchi spoke of why he was doing less films in Bollywood.

He said “I don’t say no to good movies, but I think there is a gang, which, due to misunderstandings, is spreading some false rumours,” he said.

He recently worked with Mukesh Chabara, director of the Bollywood film Dil Bechara. AR Rahman had given the director 4 songs in 2 days.

Apparently director Mukesh Chabra was warned by many people about working with Rahman. The director had been primed by so many people in the industry and was ‘told stories after stories’, Rahman said in the interview. He said “When Mukesh Chhabra came to me, I gave him four songs in two days. He told me, ‘Sir, how many people said don’t go, don’t go to him [Rahman] and they told me stories after stories.’ I heard that, and I realised, yeah okay, now I understand why I am doing less and why the good movies are not coming to me. I am doing dark movies, because there is a whole gang working against me, without them knowing that they are doing harm.”

Make beautiful movies, and you are welcome to come to me,” he said while talking about how people expect him to work in Bollywood but he has to face a “gang”.

A few years back, he was seen in an awkward position with Salman Khan, a Bollywood actor who referred to him as an “average composer.” In a viral video, Rahman was seen giving a nod as response to Khan’s remark. When Rahman was asked if he would like to work with Salman Khan’s movies, he responded “Let him first do movies which I like”. Later, Rahman revealed that this interaction was a joke.

The debate of shadowing talent in the entertainment industry hit the roof after the death of Dil Bechara’s actor Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide and many blame the nepotistic culture prevalent in the industry.

While many celebrities expressed grief on social media platforms, Rahman tweeted “Rest in peace in a better place,” which fans think is an indirect slam to Bollywood.
