Italy to open doors to tourists from June

Italy’s government has confirmed on Saturday that they will be allowing travel abroad as well as letting in travellers from outside from June 3. Travel ban within the country will be lifted on the same day.

Italy had been in a rigorous lockdown starting from March to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. In an attempt to restore the economy as well as prevent the second wave of contagion, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has suggested a gradual release from lockdown. This is to be rolled out from May 18, when shops are scheduled to reopen while all travel bans will be lifted post June 2nd, which happens to be the country’s Republic Day.

Following the announcement, preparations by shops and markets are in full swing for the reopening. They are to reopen strictly adhering to social distancing norms.

More than 31,600 Italians have died of COVID-19 since the outbreak came to light on February 21, the third-highest death toll in the world after that of the United States and Britain.

Periyar’s eternal hate for Dalits and the continuing legacy

Of late, the DMK’s casteist mindset and their hatred towards Dalits has been coming out in the open. A few days back, the DMK Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran’s made an incendiary and vile comment on Dalits causing major controversy. Not more than 2 months ago another DMK leader R.S. Bharathy was found to have made a comment insinuating that the appointment of Dalits as High Court judges in Tamil Nadu was “alms” given by the Dravidian parties. We have been getting to see a pattern of casteist abuses from the leaders of the party in public platforms.

Why is it that a party that projects itself as the corollary of the “anti-caste” Dravidian movement indulges in such atrocious conduct? The answer lies in the fountain-head of this movement, E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker also known by his followers as Periyar.

Dalit leaders like Ayothidasa Pandithar, MC Rajah, Rettamalai Srinivasan mobilised Dalits of TamilNadu at a scale never seen before during the times before independence. The movement toiled hard for enhanced rights in education, public employment and representation. These movements started way before the Dravidian “Non- Brahmin Movement” led by Periyar came into existence. The Dalit movement became a major political and intellectual force to reckon with. The leaders of the movement placed an extra emphasis on Dalit education and public employment opportunities. But Periyar ridiculed this effort saying “Asking the government for jobs, education, duties, huts and housing; and seeking from the Mirasdars two extra measures of paddy is a shame.”

During the infamous Keezhvenmani incident on 25th December, 1958 when 44 Dalit labourers were burnt alive by Zamindars for demanding a raise in wages, Periyar refused to condemn the incident and instead said, “Labourers should simply accept the wages offered to them by the land-owners instead of demanding more than what they deserve”, thus completely ignoring the violent, casteist angle to the incident.

Additionally, Periyar, in the Dravidian mouth-piece magazine Kudiarasu comments that the price of clothing is rising exponentially because of Dalit women starting to wear jackets.

In his entire career of activism, he has not worked or strived for a single Dalit Rights movement associated with education, employment, temple entry, or occupation. But this does not stop him from claiming credit for movements he was hardly a part of.

The Vaikom struggle that started off in 1924 in Vaikom, Kerala was led and orchestrated by the Hindu Reformist Saint Shree Narayan Guru to eradicate practises of untouchability and prohibition of temple entry subjected towards the Dalits. Periyar, who had no considerable involvement whatsoever in the movement except for the one stage event he had attended during the course of the 1-year struggle, was projected in Tamil Nadu as the brain and heart behind it. School textbooks till date in Tamil Nadu describe Periyar as the “Vaikom Warrior”. Periyar was always envious of Dalits gaining political representation so much so that he once had addressed Dr. Ambedkar as “an agent of the North Indian Brahminical Congress Party

The brazen Anti- Dalit sentiment of the Dravidian Movement is reflected in the attitude shown by the Dravidian parties that subsequently ruled the state. A report compiled in January, 2002 named the “Bhopal Document” elaborates on how Dalits’ living conditions got affected severely in the 30-year Dravidian Rule in multiple parameters like education, employment and right to land. This is believed to be primarily because of the rampant land grabbing by political agents from the oppressed and economically poorer sections of society, thus hurting them financially, socially and educationally.

The DMK government on September 19, 2000 led by M. Karunanidhi brought in a GO(Govt. Order) that prohibited Christian Dalits from converting back to Hinduism, simply to deny those Dalits the benefits of reservation.

Multiple media reports have it that several DMK cadre properties are a part of the allegedly grabbed Panchami Lands including the famed Murasoli Maran Towers that were supposed to have been in possession of the Dalit community as per a British legislation “Panchami Land Act, 1892”(the legislation came as a result of the Dalit movement led by Iyotheethaasa Pandithar)

Over 200 days have passed since political leaders and activists of Tamil Nadu demanded evidence from DMK leader MK Stalin to establish that the properties belonging to the Karunanidhi family tree are not that of the Panchami Lands. There has been no response from DMK to this day regarding the matter.

So a historical review of the Dravidian Movement and especially DMK’s exploits suggest that the comments made by Dayanidhi Maran and RS Bharathy are merely a continuation of a long-standing legacy which kicks off from the times of E.V. Ramaswamy.

“Will the DMK set precedence by closing liquor mfg units owned by its cadre?”, Min Jayakumar asks

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister Jayakumar posed a question to DMK if whether its cadres will come forward to close the liquor manufacturing units and lead by example.

The Minister made the remark while addressing a pressmeet after inspecting an Amma canteen in Chennai Egmore.

He said that the closure of liquor shops was a social issue and added that, if awareness is created through campaigns that makes people to stop buying alcohol, there wouldn’t be a need for the government to open TASMAC.

NGO booked for using foreign funds to convert tribes

A complaint has been filed against the “Gospel for Tribal Social Service Society” with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for misusing foreign funds and indulging in religious conversion activities in Telangana. The evangelical non-profit organisation registered under FCRA (010250092) is being brought to books for serious violations under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

The complaint registered by “Legal Rights Protection Forum” (LRPF) against the organization for involving in religious conversion of Janjatis (tribals) in Khammam district, reported the Organiser. Reports say that, an investigation led by LRPF found that the evangelical group set up poultry farm with a capacity of 2 lakh birds using foreign funds and have used the profits to fund large scale conversion activities. The complaint stated the NGO had received funds only for “Educational and Social” purposes until 2013-14. However, it was found that the NGO has been spending huge sums to acquire physical assets like land, building etc., while spending little on the stated objectives.

The complaint also noted that the organization is involved in establishing churches in small tribal hamlets, providing cycles and bibles to local men for door to door religious trading activities.

The preachers belonging to the evangelical organization are also accused of making communal speeches. The chief of the NGO Bishop Jacob has been giving hateful speeches not just about the local tribes’ religious practices, but also about the country. Bishop Jacob is accused of making false claims of Hindus burning churches and killing Christians. He is also said to have toured US and Europe allegedly making hate speeches in several languages.

In the guise of helping orphans, senior citizens etc as mentioned in their website, the NGO has set up foot soldiers in large scale to carry out conversion activities. The minors of the tribe compulsorily made to change their names, read bible verses and are ‘trained’ to become ‘Bible Graduates’.

Nearly 1500 churches, 1100 missionaries and 2,00,000 people are being converted to Christianity, but none of these activities have been registered by the NGO with the MHA.

The NGO has been bringing in foreign evangelical scholars under tourist visas who indulge in preaching and conversion activities (a clear violation of Visa rules).

The NGO has also violated section 12 of FCRA by showing false annual declaration of activities and funds as per the complaint made by LRPF.

LRPF has been vocal about the rights of tribes and exposing fraudulent organisations. They have called for a closer look at their account books and freezing of their bank accounts. It has demanded a thorough investigation into its activities and prosecute the key members of the NGO.

USCIRF and Madras University conniving together to spread hatred

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is a U.S. federal government commission created by the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998. USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and the leadership of both political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives. USCIRF’s principal responsibilities are to review the facts and circumstances of violations of religious freedom internationally and to make policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress.

The USCIRF assumes itself the role of the global guardian, with the same ‘vulgar and permanent’ spirit of Kipling lurking in the dark background.

The virus that kills other faiths – USCIRF

It is odd that the US, isolated for centuries from various faiths and cultures, believes it has a better understanding of multi-cultural society than India which has a long history of being melting pot of different cultures. Maligning ancient cultures and trying to make the believers of ancient faiths apologetic about their own faith through fake rhetoric and manufactured narratives has been a long-tested strategy that the Church had used in erasing Roman Paganism from the face of this planet.

The USCIRF does not seem to be doing anything different here. They publish shoddy reports every year, rather take it on themselves to writing letters to independent sovereign governments regarding stray incidents without any facts.

Well we can take the latest narrative they set on Gujarat hospital reporting that different beds have been provided to Muslim and Hindus who have been admitted in the corona ward but the fact turned out to be different.

As per the latest article in The Sunday Guardian professors affiliated with the University of California at Davis, Butler University, St. Michael’s College at Toronto, and Elon University are planning to hold an overwhelmingly Hindu-phobic conference in July this year at the University of Madras that is fraudulently titled “Conference in the Study of Religions of India”. The Convener is listed as James Ponniah of the Department of Christian Studies. This conference is an attempt to spread hatred for Indic faiths and is about to be clandestinely held at the University of Madras

Upon receiving the information, when the ABVP contacted Vice Chancellor of Madras University and the Head of the Department regarding the conference they refused to give a reply. There is not even a mention of this conference of bigots in the mainstream media.

Such events are conducted to malign the image of our country in the international arena and should not be entertained. Stern action need to be taken against the conveners.

I take this opportunity to urge the Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu to cancel the permission given to this conference.

A European country declares ‘end’ of COVID19 within its boundaries

Slovenia becomes the first European country to declare the end of the pandemic within its territories. The Slovenian government on Friday said that the spread of the deadly virus is under control and that there is no longer a need for extraordinary health measures. Prime Minister Janez Jansa declared that “Today Slovenia has the best epidemic situation in Europe, which enables us to call off the general epidemic”.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of the country reporting less than 7 new cases every day for the past 14 days. Restrictions have been eased in the country and people entering from other European Union states would no longer be subjected to a mandatory quarantine period of one week while non-European Union citizens will have to stay in quarantine. All shops and driving schools will be allowed to resume services. Schools will be allowed to function with students in pre-schools along with first 3 grades of primary school. Food shops however, will function only from 8 AM to 6 PM.

Slovenia borders Italy and has 2 million people. As of Thursday, it reported 1500 positive cases and 103 deaths.

“I am a public servant, not a politician”, TN Chief Secretary responds to DMK MPs

DMK MPs Dayanidhi Maran and TR Baalu along with Tamizhachi Thangapandian and Kalanidhi Veerasamy had met Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam yesterday to submit the petitions received under DMK’s propaganda banner “Ondrinaivom Vaa”. However, the DMK MPs alleged that the Chief Secretary did not receive them properly and had insulted them. Responding to the allegations made by DMK MPs TR Baalu, Dayanadhi Maran, Kalanidhi Veerasamy and Tamizhachi Thangapandian, the Chief Secretary mentioned that he was distressed by Mr. TR Baalu’s twisted statements made in the press about the meeting.

“I have great respect for the Leader of Opposition. I don’t have any intention of insulting him. It is because of this respect that I set aside time amidst all the work to meet DMK MPs at 5.30 pm after reaching my cabin at 2:30 PM from the District Collector’s meeting.”, Mr. Shanmugam said in a statement.

“As the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was announcing the second tranche of measures as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat, I was informed of the DMK MPs arrival. I asked the Finance Secretary to take note of the Finance Minister’s speech and went to attend the DMK MPs. Along with them 15-20 people came into my room with big bundles of petitions. I was shocked at so many people entering my cabin in the wake of the spread of the virus.” he said.

Mr. TR Baalu had asked the Chief Secretary as to when will the 1 lakh petitions be submitted to the officials to which the latter responded that it will be sent as soon as possible and action will be taken. However, TR Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran asked for a date. Mr. Shanmugam had said they need to be categorized department wise and that all offices are functioning with minimum staff to which Mr. Baalu asked the Chief Secretary if he should go out and say that no action will be taken since there are no officials.

“This is the problem. You don’t realize the difficulties that we are going through. You may go and tell the press whatever you want. I don’t have any objection.”, Mr. Shanumgam is said to have responded to them, he said in his statement.

He said that he doesn’t have any intention to insult them. “The allegation that I was watching TV without paying attention to them is false. I had already reduced the TV volume before the meeting”, he said.

“I am a normal public servant and not a politician. My duty is to serve the people. It is not my intention to upset anyone. I am distressed by the twisted statements made in the press. Opposition Leader and the people will know who is speaking the truth and who is twisting statements.”, Mr. Shanmugam said.
