Congress Rae Bareli MLA suspended from party’s women’s wing for tweet rebuking party’s ‘cheap politics’

Just hours after Congress MLA from Rae Bareli tweeted slamming her own party for playing ‘cheap politics’ over stranded migrant workers, the Congress suspended MLA Aditi Singh from the position of general secretary of the women’s wing of the party, citing ‘indiscipline’. She is the National In-charge of Priyadarshini, the Congress women’s wing.

There is also a complaint pending with the Uttar Pradesh Assembly as she had attended the October 2019 special session called by Yogi Adityanath government while the Congress called for a boycott of the session protesting against the Centre’s move to abrogate Article 370 and 35A. The party had also called for disqualification of the MLA.

The Congress MLA on Thursday hit out at her party in a tweet for resorting to ‘low-level politics’ at the time of a pandemic. She called it a cruel joke and asked why the party could not use the buses for transporting migrants in Congress ruled / its alliance partner states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

Aditi Singh in her second tweet said “Where were the so-called buses when thousands of children from UP were stranded in Kota? The Congress government there could not leave the children at the border.” She added that it was Yogi Adityanath who arranged buses overnight and enabled the children to return back home which was praised by Rajasthan Chief Minister.

Was Ravana a Tamil King?

If there is one mythological character who has captured the imaginations of the Tamils on a large scale, it has got to be Ravana. Stories of him being a devotee of Lord Shiva are to be found in the Hindu puranas and also in the Nayanmar poems, which incidentally also claim that Lord Ram was a Shiva devotee.

After Robert Caldwell opened a Pandora’s Box by talking about a racial divide among the Indians, an entirely new dimension was introduced to the narrative so as to claim that Ravana was a Dravidian king and that Rama was an Aryan ruler. To this day we can see self-styled historians claiming that the very existence of the Sinhala language in Sri Lanka is the result of the Rama-Ravana war.

In 1946, a whole new book called Ravana Kaaviyam was written in 1946, to project Ravana as the hero and Rama as the villain. The author of the book was Pulavar Kuzhandhai, who had leanings towards the Dravidar Kazhagam, an aetheist movement that was started to challenge the Brahminical dominance.

Such a stream of thought had lost steam over the years, but of late, linguistic chauvinists in the state like Seeman and Thirumurugan Gandhi have picked it up again. We can also see some demands by fringe groups to conduct a Raavan Leela, in response to the Ram Leela.

At the same time, we can also see that the traditionalists and the people of Tamil Nadu at large, have repeatedly questioned these claims and written them off as fake narratives peddled with an ulterior motive to divide society.

With this being the case, it becomes imperative to look into the ancient Tamil scriptures to see which of the claims are substantiated by evidence.

The earliest references to the Ramayana in Sangam Tamil literature is to be found in the text Puranaanooru in the 378th poem.

Sita, who was the wife of the ferocious Rama, was kidnapped by the demon Ravana, who had strong arms. Sita threw her ornaments in the vicinity of monkeys who were squatting on the ground. The monkeys, which had reddish faces, were bewildered by seeing the ornaments.

The poet, Onn Podhi Pasingudaiyaar, takes this as a reference to narrate the bewilderment and ecstasy which poets feel when they receive gifts from the Chola King Ilanchet Cenni.

Please note that Ravana is reffered to as a demon and not as a leader of Tamils, anywhere in the poem.

We find another reference to the Ramayana in another Sangam Tamil text, Aganaanooru in the 70th poem.

வென்வேற் கவுரியர் தொன்முது கோடி

முழங்கிரும் பௌவம் இரங்கும் முன்றுறை

வெல்போர் இராமன் அருமறைக்கு அவித்த

பல்வீழ் ஆலம்

Rama, who was victorious in the war, came and sat under a banyan tree in Dhanushkodi, which was ruled by the Pandian Kings, along the sea shore. When Rama was reading his texts, he Banyan tree was engulfed by silence.

This incident is used by the poet as a reference to explain how a village that used to gossip about the love of a Tamil couple, stopped gossiping and became silent once they got married (just as how the Banyan tree was engulfed by silence once Rama sat under it to read his texts).

Note how Rama’s victory over Ravana is celebrated in this poem by calling him as a victorious king.

The very fact that the Ramayana story is not actually narrated, but used as a parable to explain the nature of something else, in both of these poems, is proof of the fact that Ramayana was revered in Tamil Nadu.

We also find various references in the later Tamil texts like Pazhamaozhi Naanooru, Silapathikaaram and Manimeekalai which sing praises of Rama. Nowhere do we find the acts of Ravana, being celebrated or he being referred to as a Tamil King.

Another interesting aspect is that the very name,Ravana,is not a permitted word,as per the rules of Tamil grammer, which state that no word should started with the syllable “Ra”.

The Tamil text Nanool, has the below sutra.

ரவ்விற்கு அம்முதலாம் முக்குறிலும்
லவ்விற்கு இம்முதல் இரண்டும் யவ்விற்கு
இய்யும் மொழிமுதல் ஆகி முன் வருமே

Meaning:The phoenetic “Ra”(ர) should be prefixed with “Ae”(அ)/E(இ)/OU(உ). The phoenetic la(ல) should be prefixed with E(இ)/OU(உ).

This sutra is drawn from the earliest Tamil work, Tholkaapiyam, which defines the rules as to how Sanskrit words in Tamil should be used without violating the rules of Tamil Grammar.

வடசொல்கிளவி வட எழுத்து ஓரீஇ,
எழுத்தொடு புணர்ந்த சொல் ஆகுமே

Meaning:While writing Sanskrit words in Tamil, they should be modified in such a way that they don’t violate the rules of Tamil grammar.

This is the reason why the Sanskrit word ராவணன் is written as இராவணன் in Tamil, so that the rules of Tamil grammar are not violated.

While today we find Tamils giving Sanskrit names to their children, this was not the case with ancient Tamils. So it becomes amply clear that Ravana did not have Tamil origins.

The Hindu Puranas also claim that Ravana was born in today’s Uttar Pradesh and later settled down in Sri Lanka, thus explaining why he had a Sanskrit name instead of a Tamil one.

Today’s Ravana fanatics like Seeman do have the dubious history of sharing stage with Kashmiri separatists like Yasin Malik, so it is no surprise that they claim that a demon like Ravana is their leader.

If the friendship grows in leaps and bounds, and if the people of Tamil Nadu, were to fall for tricks of such people, we would soon see him assigning new heroes to the Tamil population, based on his own “discoveries”.

Hopefully they don’t call Osama Bin Laden as a ‘muppattan’ (ancestral grandfather).

Chinese politicians promote vegetarian food

Xu Jingkun , member of China’s political body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has proposed vegetarian diet in official receptions of the body’s meetings in the aftermath of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. He expressed his concerns over a second wave of the virus and mooted that the official party meetings go for vegetarian menu.

China recently banned sale of wild life trade for meat eating purposes. This has affected the livestock farmers who breed wild life such as rat snakes, bamboo rat, beaver, elk, squirrel, cobra, etc. However, the trade remains legal for research and traditional medicine.

Animal rights group Humane Society International (HSI) noted that Hunan and Jiangxi are major wildlife breeding provinces. Revenue from wild life breeding business reached 10 billion Yuan in 2018. China has come up with special packages to help the wildlife trading community as they have been severely affected post-ban of animal sales.

Now the Chinese Communist Party has shifted to serve vegetarian food at state receptions. This will pass a message to the Chinese people to be responsible food consumers.

Looks like, China is all set to record a new chronicle of “vegetarian” dishes.

Nepal calls Chinese virus as Indian virus, blames India for spread of COVID

Following the controversial map release by Nepal, the Himalayan country’s Prime Minister Sharma Oli blamed India for spreading the Wuhan corona virus in his country.

Mr. Oli in a speech in the Parliament said “It has become very difficult to contain COVID-19 due to the flow of people from outside. Indian virus looks more lethal than Chinese and Italian now. More are getting infected”.

The remark made by Oli has baffled and outraged officials on the Indian side as Mr.Oli termed the Made-in-China virus as “Indian virus”. It is to be noted that the Chinese virus is said to have originated from a high security lab or from a wet market in Wuhan.

Oli’s comments came following the launch of new political map of Nepal where Indian territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura have been included as part of its territory. Popular actress from Nepal Manisha Koirala, who found her fortune acting in Indian films, endorsed the country’s new maps.

The Indian Government senses an increased role of China in the on-going events. Indian Army Chief Naravane on Friday while addressing a virtual meet organized by IDSA said “I do not know exactly what they are exactly agitating about. Never been a problem in the past, reasons to believe they might have raised these problems, issues at the behest of someone else and there is very much a possibility.”

However, China has maintained that it has nothing to do with Nepal’s stance over Lipulekh.

Nepal releases new political map, calls Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh its territory

On Wednesday, the Government of Nepal released new political maps that claimed the Indian territories of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh as its own. The new controversial map was launched by Minister of Land Management Padma Kumari Aryal.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said in a statement that the unilateral act of Kathmandu was not based on historical facts and evidence and went against the bilateral understanding of resolving the border issues through diplomatic routes. He urged Kathmandu to opt the diplomatic route to settle the border dispute.

Nepal’s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari earlier this month while addressing a joint session of the Parliament had said that new maps of the country would be published that will show all areas it considers its own.

Bhandari had said, “Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani region are Nepal’s territory and concrete diplomatic efforts will be taken towards reclaiming these territories. An official map of Nepal will be published accordingly incorporating all the territories of Nepal.”

The release of the new map comes after the recent road inauguration by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from Dharchula to Lipulekh that would serve as a simpler route for Kailash-Mansoravar pligrims.

Nepal Foreign Minister Gwali had summoned the Indian envoy to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra to raise the matter. However, the Government of India refuted Nepal’s concerns saying that the road going through Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district lies completely within the territory of India.

Subramanian Swamy to sue UN Under Secretary General

BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha Dr. Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday said that he would take steps to sue UN Under Secretary General Adama Dieng for ‘slandering him’ in a press release in New York.

Mr. Dieng had said that “statements such as those expressed by Member of Parliament Subramanian Swamy, that all people are not equal, and that Muslims are not in an ‘equal category’ as others are extremely alarming” referring to Dr. Swamy’s interview with Pakistani owned VICE channel.

Responding to a tweet, Dr. Swamy wrote, “I need practice so I will enjoy suing in court an United Nation official for defamatory lies.”

Dr. Swamy in the interview with VICE noted that the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 was a commitment made over several years by several governments and that the BJP government had only completed the job. He added “we know where the Muslim population is large, there is always trouble because the Islamic ideology says so.” He noted that if Muslims become more than 30% [of the population], that country is in danger.

When the reporter quotes Article 14 of the Constitution that guarantees equality, Dr. Swamy notes that, it is a misinterpretation and that Article 14 guarantees equality of equals. When the reporter asks whether all people are not equal, Dr. Swamy says that all people are not equal. The reporter intrudes to ask whether Muslims do not deserve equal rights to apply for citizenship to which Dr. Swamy responds that “there is no such thing as equal rights, they are not in an equal category”.

Dr. Swamy in his interview was referring to the Muslims living in Pakistan and not Indian Muslims. However, it was misconstrued to be referring to Muslims living in India. The video was even shared by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/ImranKhanPTI/status/1245942118339706880

Dr. Swamy had earlier tweeted that the Pakistani owned VICE channel had given a doctored version to Imran Khan and asked for a true copy of the interview.

Formalization of micro food processing enterprises gets Cabinet’s nod

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday gave its approval to the formalization of micro food processing enterprises through a centrally sponsored scheme for the same. The scheme titled “Scheme for Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (FME)” with an outlay of ₹10,000 crores will help micro food processing units that are mostly under the unorganized sector to come under the formal ambit. The expenses under the scheme would be shared in the ratio of 60:40 between Government of India and State governments.

Here are some of the salient features of the scheme:

  • Credit linked subsidy and hand-holding support would be given to 2 lakh micro enterprises.
  • Micro enterprises would get credit linked subsidy at 35% of the eligibleproject cost with ₹10 lakh as ceiling.
  • Beneficiary would be required to contribute minimum 10% and the balance would be given as loan.
  • For SHGs, FPOs and cooperatives apart from the credit linked capital subsidy, seed capital worth ₹4 lakhs would be given for working capital and small tools along with grants for forward and backward linkages, common infrastructure, packaging, marketing and branding
  • The scheme will be rolled out on All-India basis and will be implemented over a 5 year period from 2020-21 to 2024-25
  • Scheme would focus on  existing micro food processing entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs from aspirational districts
  • It is likely to generate 9 lakh skilled and semi-skilled jobs.

In India, there are about 25 lakh unregistered food processing enterprises constituting 98% of the sector and are mostly in the informal sector. Around 66% of these units are located in rural areas and 80% of them are family based enterprises. Aiding this sector will lead to creation of off-farm opportunities, reduce wastage of perishables and would help in achieving the goal of doubling farmer’s income by 2022.

Congress MLA Aditi Singh from Rae Bareli slams her own party over migrant bus issue, applauds Yogi Adityanath

Congress MLA Aditi Singh from Rae Bareli slams her own party over migrant bus issue, applauds Yogi Adityanath

Aditi Singh, the Congress MLA from Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency), criticized her party for resorting to petty politics during a pandemic. Without naming Priyanka Gandhi, she slammed the party over the ongoing 1000 buses controversy while praising Yogi Adityanath for his efforts.

The Congress MLA called it a cruel joke and asked why the party could not use the buses for transporting migrants in Congress ruled / its alliance partner states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

In the second tweet Aditi Singh said “Where were the so-called buses when thousands of children from UP were stranded in Kota? The Congress government there could not leave the children at the border.” She added that it was Yogi Adityanath who arranged buses overnight and enabled the children to return back home which was praised by Rajasthan Chief Minister.

Aditi Singh is known for being a rebel and for her outspokenness. She was one of the supporters within the Congress party to support the government’s move to abrogate Article 370 and 35 A. In October 2019, she defied her party’s instruction to attend the Assembly’s special session called by Yogi Adityanath’s government.

DMK office bearer beats migrant workers with logs for wanting to go back home

More than 300 workers from Odisha working in a brick kiln owned by Munasamy, who is the DMK treasurer for Ellapuram block in Tiruvallur district, were beaten mercilessly with logs for wanting to back to their homes in Odisha.

Due to the lockdown, the workers with no work were left to fend for themselves as the owners didn’t care. They planned to go back to Odisha. Upon coming to know of the workers plans, Munusamy and his brother Lakshmipathy beat the workers with logs. Nine people were injured and have been admitted in Tiruvallur Government hospital. Two of them are said to be in critical condition. Those after treatment returned to Munusamy’s place.

Both Munusamy and Lakshmipathy are currently absconding and the police are on the look-out for them. The owner of the kiln has been booked under sections 294(B) ( sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words), 324 ( voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (1) (threat be to cause death or grievous hurt,) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. Arrangements are being done for the workers to return to their homes through Shramik special trains.

India and USA set to collaborate on vaccine trials

US health officials on Tuesday said that India and U.S are planning to work together on vaccine research and trials for COVID19 and listed a number of other ways the two countries are working together.

U.S Embassy Health and Human Services (HHS) attaché Preetha Rajaraman informed that the scientists of the two countries have been collaborating on development and testing safe, cost-effective vaccines against a range of infectious diseases that could save numerous lives in India, USA and the world.

“In the context of current pandemic, partners under the Vaccine Action Programme (VAP) are planning to collaborate on the development and testing of vaccine candidates and diagnostics for COVID19”, she said.

The VAP is a 33 year old collaboration between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology, India and the US National Institutes of Health along with other partners.
