Rae Bareli Congress MLA Aditi Singh removes ‘Congress’ from her Twitter bio

Congress MLA Aditi Singh from Rae Bareli slams her own party over migrant bus issue, applauds Yogi Adityanath

Just like Jyotiraditya Scindia, who in November 2019 removed ‘Congress’ from his Twitter bio and then followed to join the BJP in March 2020, Congress MLA from Rae Bareli seems to be walking the former’s footsteps by removing ‘Indian National Congress’ from her Twitter bio.

Her profile now reads as – “MLA Rae Bareli Sadar, Uttar Pradesh. Masters in Management Studies, Duke University. Forever trying to be a practitioner of Ayurveda, Yoga and Plant Based Living.”

The MLA known for being a rebel and speaking her mind. She was one of the supporters within the Congress party to support the government’s move to abrogate Article 370 and 35 A. In October 2019, she defied her party’s instruction to attend the Assembly’s special session called by Yogi Adityanath’s government. The party had called for disqualification of the MLA and a complaint regarding the same is pending with the Speaker.

More recently, she came down heavily on her own party over the migrant worker bus issue and praised Yogi Adityanath for his efforts to bring migrant workers back home safely.

SCI-Interact: SC develops software to go paperless

The Supreme Court of India has developed a software named SCI-Interact that is set to streamline operations of the court and make all its 17 benches go paperless.

Through this software, judges would be able to access files, annexures to petitions and take notes on computer itself without it being accessible to others. Tablets with the software are being provided to judges.

The software is said to have been developed by the Supreme Court’s Computer Cell.

The software comprises 5 components – e-filing of fresh cases, scanned copies of pending cases, MPLS network with dual redundancy, IT hardware, and security audit.

The Supreme Court has been experimenting with tech solutions to become more efficient and reduce human intervention. Earlier the apex court came out with an language translation tool named SUVAS (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software) that will translate judicial orders and judgements into 9 languages – Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

Another project called Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court Efficiency (SUPACE) that employs Artificial Intelligence is aimed at data mining, tracking progress of cases, legal research and other uses.

Infighting in DMK: PTR and Dayanidhi flex muscles before Stalin

A meeting of district secretaries, legislators and lawmakers was held on May 24 under the leadership of DMK leader MK Stalin.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chennai Central MP Dayanidhi Maran is said to have mentioned that the DMK’s IT Wing’s performance was inadequate and that the AIADMK and BJP were ahead of the DMK’s IT team. With regards to this, the DMK’s IT Wing Head PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan is said to have issued a statement to the DMK IT Wing members stating Dayanidhi’s Maran’s comment and Stalin interfering to appreciate the efforts of the IT team.

The statement is said to have mentioned “It is surprising that Dayanidhi Maran, who has a long experience as a Union Minister, does not realize the fundamental difference between being a ruling party which has access to power and influence, including the police, and being an opposition party.”

The DMK MP’s comment and the following response by the DMK IT Wing head has brought the fight out in the open and has led to the raise of eyebrows, posing yet another challenge to Stalin.

Brazil’s death toll predicted to cross 125,000 by August

Brazil’s daily rate of deaths due to coronavirus has taken a turn for the worse with the death rate climbing to the highest in the world. At this rate, experts say that it could rise up to five fold by August.

On Monday, Brazil crossed the US’ daily death toll, calling for a lockdown that had not been strongly enforced by the government.

Brazil registered 807 deaths on Monday, while the number was 620 in the US. Brazil has already overtaken Russia to be the number 2 coronavirus hotspot after the United States.

The US government has enforced strict restrictions against traveling from and to Brazil to the US.

While speaking about this, IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray wrote that Brazil should follow Wuhan and Spain’s model of mandatory social distancing and that they had to gain control of the epidemic before it gets out of hand. The IHME forecast model predicts the rise in death toll based on the effects of social distancing, mobility statistics and testing process and capacity, which could change based on policy adjustments.

Tensions rise in Hongkong over China’s new national anthem bill

Security has been tightened in China’s Hongkong as of Wednesday, as the Chinese government is all-set to debate the new bill, which criminalises disrespect towards their national anthem. This bill enforces the teaching of ‘March of the Volunteers’ in all schools and educational organisations, and jail for those who don’t abide by the new law.

People of Hong Kong have taken to the streets again over the fear of having their freedom curbed due to this new legislation. It is seen as a direct interference of China’s Communist Party in the former British colony’s affairs. Images of police firing tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters evoked memories of the protests held last year against the extradition bill.

Police vans and officers lined roads near the heart of the financial centre as authorities braced for fresh protests.

The laws that could fall in place after the legislation is passed could put an end to all the freedom that people of Hong Kong had been enjoying all these years since 1997, when China got back Hongkong from Britain’s colonial rule, which gave Hongkong some amount of autonomy under “one country, two systems”.

However, the Chinese authorities and the Beijing-backed government in Hong Kong say there is no threat to the city’s autonomy and the laws will be tightly focused.

Indian-origin couple develop low-cost ventilator

The ventilator is said to have a manufacturing cost of $100. “Even with a price point of USD 500, manufacturers would have enough money to make sure that they are making enough profit in the market”, Devesh told PTI. The ventilators of the kind developed by Devesh is said to cost around $10,000 in the American market.

Devesh however, has made it clear, that theirs is not an ICU ventilator as those are more sophisticated and costs more.

Daily orders and judgements of SC will now be available in 9 languages, thanks to AI

The Supreme Court of India will now use Artificial Intelligence tools developed in-house to translate judicial orders and judgements into Bengali, Gujrati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. Deployment of AI is also a step taking in the direction of reducing human intervention in translating documents.

The project is being supervised by a committee headed by Justice L.N. Rao. The AI tool has been provided to 15 High Courts for testing.

Legal services authorities usually take the services of an external translator for the task. With AI tools, the work is all set to be done in-house. The tools however will not eliminate manual intervention as the tools at present are able to achieve 90% accuracy. The remaining 10% of the translation would require human intervention.

The translated judgements would be available on the Supreme Court’s website. Daily orders of court proceedings would be given to litigants and lawyers who request for it.

The effort to provide translated judgement copies was launched last July when the apex court started putting judgements in six regional languages namely Assamese, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Odia and Telugu. The translation was done manually. Translation of daily orders did not come under this exercise.
