Hockey coach and DMK office bearer arrested for sexually assaulting and threatening school girls

Shankar, an office bearer with the DMK students’ wing, who is also a hockey coach at the Chettinad Women’s Hockey Club has been accused of sexual harassment by two school girls training under him.

Shankar belonging to Pallathur village, is the DMK Student Wing Organizer of Sakkottai west and has been a hockey coach at the club.

The Chettinad Women’s Hockey Club in Karaikudi, Sivagangai District offers free training to school girls interested in hockey.

Two sisters from Vadapatti village in Madurai have been undergoing training at the club with Shankar as their coach.

They had complained to the school principal that Shankar had repeatedly called them to rooms, sexually harassed and even threatened to kill them if they spoke about it to anyone.

The school principal later informed the parents about this.

Based on the complaints lodged by the girls’ parents, the Karaikudi All Women Police Station Inspector Devaki arrested the DMK office bearer and his assistant Kannan under the POCSO Act.

Earlier, son of a DMK office bearer in Mayiladuthurai was arrested for creating ruckus at a hotel and for attempting to stab a staff after he and his friends were told that there was no Oothappam available at the hotel.

Russia wants to partner with India to produce COVID-19 Vaccine Sputnik V

India’s long time strategic partner, Russia wants joint production of its recently announced COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, the Economic Times reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, earlier this month, had announced that his country registered the world’s first vaccine against COVID19.

He claimed with the gusto that the vaccine works “quite effectively” and forms a “stable immunity” against the disease.

The vaccine has been developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, along with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Russia’s sovereign wealth fund.

RDIF Chief Executive Officer Kirill Dmitriev while addressing an online press briefing on Thursday (20 August) said, “The production of the vaccine is a very important issue. Currently, we are looking for a partnership with India. We believe that they are capable of producing the Gamaleya vaccine and it is very important to say that those partnerships to produce the vaccine will enable us to cover the demand that we have,”.

Russia plans to start international clinical trials of its Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine with more than 40,000 domestic volunteers as early as next week. According to Kirill Dmitriev, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines will participate in trials, and talks are going on with Brazil and India to provide volunteers.

However, the Russian vaccine is yet to undergo phase 3 human clinical trials.

“We are planning to produce the vaccine in more than five countries and there is a very high demand from Asia, Latin America, Italy and other parts of the world regarding the delivery of the vaccine,” he said.

According to the report, the Sputnik V vaccine consists of two shots that use different versions of adenoviruses — virus types, some of which cause the common cold — that the manufacturers have engineered to carry the gene for the surface protein of SARS-CoV-2 that causes Covid-19.

The RDIF in a statement on Thursday said that tests of the “immunogenicity and safety of the Sputnik V vaccine” will begin next week involving more than 40,000 people.

Hayat Baloch dragged, beaten and gunned down at point-blank range by Pakistani forces

In another case of extra-judicial killing, the Pakistani paramilitary forces on 13th August gunned down a Baloch social media activist who had criticised the Pakistani policies in Balochistan.

Baloch student Hayat Baloch who hailed from the Turbat, Balochistan region was gunned down by paramilitary at point-blank range in his hometown. He had gone there to help with the COVID-19 and was planning to sit in for CSS exams. However, Hayat, a Baloch student who was doing this Master’s from Karachi University died while his mother held his dead corpse.

As his parents pleaded with the security forces, Hayat was dragged away and was given a terrible beating and then he was shot eight times from a point-blank range. The photo of Hayat’s mother looking at the sky and his father crying inconsolably has been trending in social media.

This is seen as retaliation after Pakistani paramilitary forces were attacked in Turbat with an IED blast on 13th of August 2020 on the eve Pakistan’s Independence Day.

The immediate response was to go after innocent non-combatant civilians and unfortunately, an educated Baloch youth was marked for revenge.

It is said that Hayat Baloch was not even a sympathizer of the Baloch freedom cause and all he wanted was to further his education, get a good job and help his family.

After his killing, there was a mass protest and the death of Hayat Baloch by the hands of paramilitary was called as a part of the “Pakistan’s state policy”, which regularly kills innocent non-combatants and for decades kept the Baloch youth from getting higher education.

It is estimated that over 40 thousand Baloch people are still missing because of their political views. Balochistan was occupied by Pakistan in 1948 and this region is rich with natural resources. The Sui gas fields are located in Balochistan.

Pakistan has literally pledged Balochistan to China under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) agreement. China has rights to practically do anything in the region and has already uprooted tens of thousands of Baloch people from their lands and the dirty work is carried out by the Pakistan military along with no-state Islamic terror organisations.

There are more stories similar to that of Hayat. Baloch people have accused Pakistan of running rape camps were female members of separatists are kept as a bargaining chip so that the men will surrender which often means extensive torture and then death.

Udhayanidhi vs Kanimozhi: DMK’s ticking time bomb

The top leadership of the DMK has been trying to put up a united show saying that there exists no feuds among them and that no external force can break their unity. However, there are visible cracks in the form of family quarrels and party infighting that can lead to factionalism in the DMK under Stalin’s leadership.

If it was MK Stalin versus MK Alagiri for the previous generation, the fight for power is between Kanimozhi and her nephew Udayanidhi for this generation.

It is a well-known fact that Kanimozhi has a unique influence and has her own support base in the party. She represents the party both at the state and national level and remains an influential voice in Delhi, unlike Udhayanidhi.

Though she was formally accorded as Karunanidhi’s ‘literary heir’, large number of DMK cadres and sympathizers feel that she has all the potential to be his political heir as she is said to have the political hues of her father. Stalin on the other hand has made himself the butt of all jokes exposing his ‘oratory skills’ and double standards. On top of this, he has engaged a Brahmin from Bihar to give a facelift to his image which instead of working for him has become a political weapon for his opponents.

Despite Stalin’s failure to energise party cadres after his father’s death, reality remains that Stalin is in the DMK’s throne. Stalin had gone out of the way to keep his ‘own’ brother MK Alagiri away from grabbing the DMK’s reigns. So naturally, he would be threatened by the rise of his step-sister’s stature in the party. Like how he cornered MK Alagiri for himself, political observers say that Udhayanidhi’s sudden rise in the party is Stalin’s attempt to corner and contain Kanimozhi.

Several happenings stand testimony to this.

When there was attack on JNU students in January this year, Kanimozhi went there and addressed the students and extended her hand of support on behalf of the DMK. Her popularity among students soared after that. Two days later, Udhayanidhi followed suit. This left people wondering -what was the need for two leaders from the same party to come to the same spot that too within a few days?

The next incident where the tiff between Kanimozhi and Udhayanidhi was seen was the Sathankulam incident. As soon as the news broke out, it was Kanimozhi who went to Thoothukudi and expressed solidarity with the family and also handed out a cheque. Immediately, Udhayanidhi rushed to the spot without even taking e-pass allegedly, to extend his support. Again, party cadres were left wondering – what is going on between the two?

In 2019, Udhayanidhi started the young women’s wing under the youth wing of the party breaching into Kanimozhi’s area. As expected, it did not go down well with the women members of the party. Kanimozhi has been the party’s women’s wing secretary for several years. The starting of the new young women’s wing was a direct message to Kanimozhi challenging her authority.

All these have upset Kanimozhi who has a far more commanding presence than the new mushroom that has risen up after a rainfall.

It is to be seen how the family feud will play out in the lead up to the elections.

NASA announces $10,000 contest for students to pitch a method to harvest water from Moon

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invited university-level students to pitch a method to harvest water from the Moon, in an attempt to encourage innovations in science and technology. It has announced a contest with a $10,000 stipend for those shortlisted.

Teams will be expected to submit their prototype or proposed concept design till November 24, 2020. Out of the designs received, NASA will pick up to 10 teams which will be selected to build and test their systems. The teams are also supposed to detect and differentiate between the differences in functionality between using this mechanism on Earth and the Moon. All of them will receive $10,000 development stipend.

This new contest called the ‘2021 Moon to Mars Ice and Prospecting Challenge’ comes under NASA’s Artemis program. Under the Artemis program, astronauts will be searching for water on the south pole of the moon. It is unknown in which form they will find water.

Most expeditions require a lot of water for purposes like trying and grow plants and make rocket propellant with it in space. Since carrying it from the Earth is a cumbersome process, NASA is now looking to harness the water that was detected to be present on the Moon.

Kerala BJP pushes for probe in the state’s land mafia scam in the CM’s constituency

The Kerala wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kerala has demanded a probe into the land mafia scam that has been going on in the CM’s constituency of Dharmadam. It went on to claim that a large land mafia group has been operating in the area and that the government should look into the issue. Many such scams are being reported in the region, following which the probe has been sought for. Several landowners have reported of being ditched after their lands had been sold using forged documents illegally.

It was also reported that the land meant for the heirs post the death of the father was being encroached and sold without the landowners’ knowledge. Even the District Collector’s order had been forged by the mafia group.

This is not the first time that a case of land mafia has been reported since there have also been cases where there have been letters written to the government to prevent moves by a private company to grab the land of the Marakkunnam Kunnil Mahadeva Temple near Neyardam and also the land owned by families residing nearby. The temple is reportedly situated in the land purchased in the name of the late Swami Satyananda Saraswathi of Sreeramadasa Ashram, and a private company was accused of trying to grab the temple land and also the adjacent residential plots for a water treatment plant of Kerala Water Authority (KWA). Further probe has been sought into this issue by regional BJP leader Surendiran.

Turkey’s pointless exercise: Using Pakistan’s terminology on J&K

Turkey from August 5 have started using the term “Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)” following its Islamic partner Pakistan. This decision was taken just one day before India celebrated the first anniversary of the abrogation of articles 370 and 35-A.

This is not the first time Turkey has acted this way and has taken the Pakistani side by using the India Occupied Kashmir (IOK) for Jammu and Kashmir and later, started to use the term, India Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) and Azad Kashmir.

India had protested this move with the Turkish national news agency Anadolu Agency, an agency run by the Turkish Government. After the protest, Anadolu Agency began to use the internationally accepted terms of India administered Kashmir and Pakistan administered Kashmir.

However, in the last one year, Pakistan-Turkey relationship has reached a new level and Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed the Anadolu Agency to again use the terms–IOJK and Azad Kashmir.

Turkey also opposed India’s move to abrogate Article 370 and 35-A. No other Islamic nation had commented on the abrogation which was passed by the Indian Parliament.

But as Pakistan got closer to China which is also financially invested in Turkey, the belligerence towards India started to grow. However, this Kashmir obsession has caused Pakistan to lose several of its allies in the Middle East, particularly its patron, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

A large number of Pakistanis work in the Middle East and send billions of dollars in remittance back home each year. But since Turkey is willing to lend its voice to Pakistan on Kashmir, there is a shift in the relationship.

Pakistan from its inception has suffered from identity crises. There was a time when it tried to culturally relate to Iran, Persia which is an ethnically and linguistically different civilization. In the 1980s came the obsession to act like an Arab and under the iron rule of Zia ul Haq, Pakistan took a turn towards Wahabi Islam, a price it is still paying.

Under the presumed leadership of Imran Khan, Pakistan is now trying to acquire Turkish identity by denying their own.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is now the undisputed leader of Turkey with dreams of reviving the Caliphate. Erdoğan wants to be the leader of the Muslim Ummah and with the help of a nuclear-armed, Pakistan he wants to create an alternative organisation to the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).

Turkey is slowly committing diplomatic suicide as it grows closer to Pakistan by abstaining to use internationally accepted terms. Pakistan is not going to get anything economically from Turkey as this nation which is the bridge to Europe starts to flounder financially.

India at 2020 is a different nation altogether under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has a lot of support from the Middle East. The official diplomatic relationship between Israel and the UAE has changed the Middle East politics completely.

Terms like Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has no bearing in the international stage and the dream of creating an alternative OIC was stomped on at the very inception and Turkey must learn from that.

Proof of that is Malaysia that did a complete u-turn after India put sanctions on the import of palm oil.

Imran Khan has a habit of making bad decisions and then blame others. Already the Chief of Pakistan Army was given a cold reception and then a royal snub by Saudi Arabia as it wants better ties with India.

Yogi Govt gives inheritance rights to ancestral and agricultural land to third gender

In yet another decision towards the empowerment and restoring the dignity of third gender, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath amended a law that will allow transgender people of the state to inherit ancestral agricultural land, the Times of India reported.

The UP Cabinet cleared an amendment to the UP Revenue Code of 2006, removing the limitations of nomenclature in inheritance laws which categorically made mention of ‘sons’, ‘daughters’, ‘married’, ‘unmarried’ and ‘widow’ as ones who would rightfully inherit such ancestral lands.

The State Law Commission in March 2019, had submitted a proposal for a law to acknowledge the right to the inheritance of the “third gender” to the Yogi government. The Commission’s chairperson, Justice AN Mittal, had pointed out that all the inheritance laws left out the people of the third gender.

Now people of the third gender can hold the succession and physical rights to the property.

Other measures taken by Yogi Adityanath for the empowerment of third gender

Prior to this, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the country’s first university for transgender community at Kushinagar district where members of the community can pursue education from class 1 to postgraduation and even do research and get a Ph.D. The university will be located in Fazilnagar block of Kushinagar district and is being built by Akhil Bhartiya Kinnar Siksha Seva Trust (All-India Transgender Education Service Trust.).

In June 2020, the Uttar Pradesh government had taken an initiative to provide employment to transgender community by dedicating Noida’s Sector 50 metro station to the community.
