IIT-B holds virtual convocation for students amid pandemic using their digital avatars

IIT Bombay held a virtual convocation for its graduate students using digital avatars on Sunday. Its 58th convocation featured virtual reality (VR) avatars of the students and the dignitaries, who give away the certificates. This had been telecast on DD Sahyadri as well as on social media.

A statement released by the institute said: “The institute thought it best to arrange such a VR-convocation for the graduating students as we did not wish to put their health at risk but at the same time, we did not wish to deprive them of the sense of achievement and pride of passing out of India’s premier engineering Institute.”

Each graduate had their own personal avatar that received the degree certificate from the digital avatar of Director Subhasis Chaudhari. The medal winners had received it from the Chief Guest, Professor Duncan Haldane, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics for 2016, and a professor of Princeton University. All the recipients and attendees were digitally assembled after being video-graphed individually.

In his address, the guest of honour, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone, Stephen Schwarzman, said: “India occupies a unique position in the world today, especially when it comes to technology, where it has established global leadership through its talent. Of the 72 Indian-origin engineers who have founded unicorns across the world, 50 per cent are IIT alumni. IIT engineers are defining the global technology landscape and the newest alumni will be the next generation of future global leaders who will advance that mission. You, IIT Bombay graduates, must seize the opportunity to be leaders of impact who are a force for change — and for good — in this world.”

The convocation commenced in a traditional manner, with the institute’s theme song marking the commencement. It also had a virtual tour of the campus and hostels scheduled.

Endangered species at a higher risk of contracting COVID

A recent study has shown that several endangered species like gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, grey whales and bottlenose dolphins, and Chinese hamsters, are at a higher risk of getting infected by the novel coronavirus.

Domesticated animals such as cats, cattle and sheep are found to have a medium risk of contracting the virus, while dogs, horses and pigs are found to have a low risk. Researchers in the University of California, Davis (UC DAVIS) predict that endangered animals are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

ACE2, Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 is the main cellular receptor is the main viral target in human beings. Almost 410 species contain this enzyme which is made up of 25 amino acids and the viral spike protein needs to bind to all of them to cause an infection. Scientists have found that animals with all 25 amino acid residues matching the human protein are predicted to be at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19 via the ACE2 receptor, using molecular modelling.

Several critically-endangered primate species, such as the Western lowland gorilla, Sumatran orangutan and Northern white-cheeked gibbon, are predicted to be at very high risk of infection by COVID-19 via their ACE2 receptor.

Centre issues GST exemption for businesses having turnover upto ₹40 lakh

The Finance Ministry on Monday announced a GST tax exemption for businesses with an annual turnover of ₹ 40 lakhs and those who make a turnover of up to ₹1.5 crore can opt to pay 1% of the tax under the composition scheme. The ministry also added the process had been fully automated, and the assessee base is now over ₹ 1.24 crore with over 1.31 crore e-bills generated so far.

Out of the 230 items in the 28% GST slab, 200 of them have been shifted to low slabs. The 28% GST slab is still reserved for ‘sin and luxury’ items.

“The taxpayer base has almost doubled since the rollout of GST. The numbers of assessee covered by the GST at the time of its inception were about 65 lakh. Now the assessee base exceeds 1.24 crore. All processes in GST have been fully automated,” the Ministry of Finance said in a statement, adding that 50 crore returns have been filed online and 131 crores e-way bill generated so far.

The ministry has relieved the construction sector considerably, with the housing sector now getting an impetus after being placed in the 5% GST rate. Businesses can obtain GST registration within three days after the due submission and authentication of their Aadhar numbers with effect from August 21st, 2020. In case the Aadhar number is not provided, the registration will be approved only after the due physical verification of the address of the business.

Family of forcefully converted Sikh girl writes to Pakistani Chief Bajwa about leaving the country

The family of a Pakistani Sikh girl was allegedly abducted, forced to convert to Islam and marry a Muslim man in Nankana Sahib area of Lahore back in August 2019. They have written to authorities in Pakistan to issue passports for them as they want to leave the country.

Letter written to DCO Nankana Sahib said, “Please be kind to us to hand over Jagjit Kaur to us” or “have our passports made so, that we can live a dignified and safe life in another country.” Earlier, a court had ruled that the abducted girl, Jagjit should go with her “husband” Muhammad Hassan who now after her forced conversion goes by the alias “Ayesha bibi” and had married to him on her own accord.

This premise is hotly disputed by the girls family, and have said, “Living in a country like Pakistan has become not only difficult but impossible for us. It is a sign of fear that we cannot send our children to school. Where we cannot save our honours, how can we save ourselves? If the tradition of conversion continues like this, then I am sorry to say that the day is not far away when there is no minority in Pakistan,” it added.

The family has sent a letter to Pakistani PM Imran Khan, Army Chief Qamar Bajwa, DG ISPR Babar Iftekhar & Governor and CM of Pakistan’s Punjab province to help them leave the country with their daughter. However, there is a possibility of them leaving the country, but it is highly unlikely the girl would be returned.

The abducted girl Jagjit Kaur who was forced to convert to Islam is the daughter of the Granthi of Nankana Sahib Gurudwara, which is the birthplace of Sikh religion founder Guru Nanak and is one of the holiest places of worship for the Sikh. According to media reports, Jagjit Kour, 19-year-old, was allegedly forcibly taken away at gunpoint on the night of 27-28 August. Now that the family wants to leave Pakistan, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will allow them to enter India.

Ram and Parshuram are the same, stop indulging in dirty politics: Yogi to Akhilesh Yadav

Speaking in the Uttar Pradesh assembly on the last day of the monsoon season, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took a dig at the Opposition which is trying to create a divide by developing sympathy for Lord Parashurama.

However, Yogi said that there was no difference between Ram and Parshuram. This sharp rebuke came after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP president Mayawati said that they would install idols of Parshuram. Replying to this statement, Yogi said, “Both Ram and Parshuram are incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The difference is in just some people’s mind,”.

The UP CM was categoric and said that Ram and Parashuram was the same for Hindus as both are incarnations of Lord Vishnu. “But some people indulge in dirty politics by harping on the difference between the two,” he added.

“These are the same people who would abuse the community by talking about tilak-taraju and are again trying to spread venom in society. However, it is the work of Ram and would continue like this,” Adityanath said, apparently targeting BSP Chief Mayawati.

Chennai-based FootPrints Publication to publish Delhi Riots: The Untold Story in Tamil

After Garuda Prakashan Publications stepped up to publish the book ‘Delhi Riots: The Untold Story’ following its rejection by Bloomsbury, Chennai-based FootPrints Publication has now come forward to publish the book in Tamil.

BJP’s spokesperson for Tamilnadu SG Suryah had extended an offer to publish the book in Tamil under FootPrints Publication. Sankrant Sanu, the Director of Garuda Prakashan, accepted this invitation in a tweet, saying that other regional language publications were welcome to publish this book in other Indic languages. He went on to say that there should be a network for Indic book translation and distribution in all Indian languages.

This book is based on the CAA-NRC riots that had happened in February 2020, which caused quite a stir nationwide. It was to be released in a virtual launch with Rajya Sabha MP Bhupendra Yadav launching the book and BJP leader Kapil Mishra, film director Vivek Agnihotri, OpIndia editor Nupur J Sharma attending the event as guest speakers. The book authored by Monika Arora, Sonali Chitalkar and Prerna Malhotra, had been withdrawn without notice by Bloomsbury India after an organised lobby descended on it for giving space to something that will break the Shaheenbagh propaganda. Following this, Garuda, a home-grown publishing start-up, had stepped forward to publish it.

Intersex activist Gopi Shankar Madurai appointed to National Council for Transgender Persons

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has appointed Gopi Shankar Madurai, an intersex activist, as one of the five representatives of transgender community to the National Council of Transgender Persons.

The Government of India on August 21 issued a gazette notification announcing the formation of India’s first ever statutory body for dealing with issues related to transgenders – the National Council for Transgender Persons.

The body has been created under Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Minister of State of Social Justice and Empowerment serve as the Chairperson and the Vice Chairperson respectively. Other members of the council include representatives not below the rank of a Joint Secretary from different ministries and departments, National Human Rights Commission, National Women Commission and NITI Aayog. Apart from them, five representatives from the transgender community are nominated representing different regions of the country who will serve for 3 years.

Gopi Shankar Madurai will be representing the southern region in the commission and is the first openly intersex and gender-queer person to get appointed in a statutory body. Ze is also the youngest member in the council.

Speaking about the appointment, Gopi Shankar Madurai said “Intersex people are often invisiblised in the legal and policy discourse. The distinction between gender identity and sex characteristics is also not understood. Being intersex, refers to sex characteristics. Intersex people in India do not have redressal mechanisms from human rights violations. They face massive barriers in access to health, education, public services and employment.  To bring about changes in the existing governance regime, it is important to work and engage with the system. During my tenure in the Council, I plan to raise awareness about rights of intersex people in general and intersex infants and children in particular. I hope to contribute in developing a comprehensive legal protection regime for intersex people.”

Gopi, a native of Madurai was the youngest and the first intersex person to contest in 2016 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Ze coined the Tamil term for gender-queer people and wrote the first book on gender variants in Tamil.

Praggnanandhaa takes down Chinese opponent, helps India grab first spot in Pool A

It was a close contest between India and Gerogia in Round 7 but India managed to pull it off.  The next round with Germany was a walk on the cake with India comfortably winning. It was now time for the final showdown with China at the play-offs.

The Indian side had the young prodigy and formidable Grand Master from Chennai Praggnanandhaa. On the Chinese side was Liu Yan. Praggy, as he is endearingly called, was on the ropes but managed to turn the tables finishing with a perfect 6/6.

Praggnanandhaa led India directly to the quarter finals.

Praggnanandhaa, is one of the players representing India at the Chess Olympiad along with his sister Vaishali and fellow chess champions Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, Harikrishna Pentala, Koneru Humpy Harika Dronavalli and Divya Deshmukh.

Praggnanandhaa became the youngest international master in history in the year 2016 and had been representing India at various chess championships. After he became the grandmaster in 2018, he had met Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Chennai. He had told that he aspired to win the world champion for which he was undergoing training. He said that it costs a lot of money to participate in tournaments across the world and requested the Minister if the government can support him.

Nirmala Sitharaman who was the then Defence Minister had assured him of all the support in his endeavours. She had reached out to the Sports Ministry headed by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

Praggnanandhaa was immediately sanctioned ₹30 lakhs from the National Sports Development Fund. His sister who was already an Under 12 and Under 14 champion received ₹10 lakhs.

This was used to get an AMD server on which Praggnanandhaa practises on a daily basis.

Remembering this occasion, coach of Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali thanked the Minister and BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu who helped him in getting the timely sponsorship from Government of India.

Delhi riots book to be published by Garuda publications after Bloomsbury withdraws

After Bloomsbury India issued a statement of withdrawal towards publishing the ‘Delhi Riots 2020: The Untold Story’ following backlash, Garuda Prakashan Publication has come forward to publish the book. It had released on its official Twitter handle, saying that it was happy to publish the book in both Hindi and English.

The book authored by Monika Arora, Sonali Chitalkar and Prerna Malhotra, had been withdrawn without notice by Bloomsbury India after an organized lobby descended on it for giving space to something that will break the Shaheenbagh propaganda. Following this, Garuda, a home-grown publishing start-up, had stepped forward to publish it. The authors said, in a statement, that they had not received any response from Bloomsbury to their email regarding the book. Bloomsbury had apparently informed the authors via phone that the book has been withdrawn, with no means of formal communication following that.

Responding to the announcement, Garuda Prakashan confirmed onboarding the authors and thanked them for putting their trust in them. “Friends! Thank you so much for your support. Let’s together make it reach every household. Truth must prevail”, they added.

Garuda Prakashan is a publishing house that is co-owned by Sankrant Sanu and Ankur Pathak. It is the same publication under which the book Urban Naxals was released.

Kim Jong Un in coma, former South Korean Aide to President refutes recent pics

In a new twist of events, the former aide to South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung has said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is in a coma and his sister Kim Yo-Jong has become the de facto second-in-command.

He added, in a social media post, that no North Korean leader would ever entrust their powers to another person until and unless there was a coup or that they were sick. The very fact that his sister has been given the powers is proof that Kim is bedridden and unable to rule.

Commenting about the recent photographs that were published of Kim by North Korea in the recent past, he claimed that those were fake and that they were attempts to quash the rumours over his health. “I assess him to be in a coma, but his life has not ended. A complete succession structure has not been formed, so Kim Yo-Jong is being brought to the fore as the vacuum cannot be maintained for a prolonged period,” Chang said.

Meanwhile, a recent release by the official news agency of North Korea has stated that the leader had recently reviewed the economic situation of the country and had acknowledged the challenges that were created by the pandemic. It also reported that Kim Jong Un had asked North Korean citizens to give up their dogs to save the country from food shortage
