FATF continues to keep Pakistan in Grey List

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has decided to keep Pakistan in Grey List for terror financing. FATF is a watchdog for global terror financing. This is a great setback to Pakistan as it has failed to check the flow of money to terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

This decision came at the third and final plenary of the Financial Action Task Force, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The third plenary was held under the Chinese Presidency of Xiangmin Liu. Pakistan will remain in the Grey List till the next scheduled meeting in October this year. If Pakistan fails to comply with the directives of FATF by October they are under threat of the global body putting them in ‘Black List’ along with North Korea and Iran.

Currently, it will be difficult for Pakistan to get financial help from IMF, World Bank, ADB, and the European Union, thus increasing the problems for the nation which is already poor in finances. A strong Indian delegation with experts on money laundering and terror financing participated in the half-day FATF plenary.

India has been pointing out for quite some time that Pakistan is funding to terror groups like LeT, JeM, and Hizbul Mujahideen, whose main target has been carrying out terror strikes in India, and has requested FATF to take action against Islamabad. The FATF currently has 39 members including two regional organizations- the European Commission and Gulf Cooperation Council.

The families of the father-son duo Jayaraj and Fenix, who were killed due to police brutality in Thoothukudi have been offered relief of 10 lakhs by the Tamil Nadu government.

The 60-year old father and his son Fenix (30) had been detained by the police at Sathankulam Police station of Thoothukudi district, following a dispute over having kept their shop open despite the lockdown. The issue escalated to a point where Jayaraj was allegedly manhandled by the police. When his son Fenix interjected, they were both brutally assaulted by the Thoothukudi police.

It was later reported that Fenix had died in hospital and a few hours following that his father died too.

When this issue was brought to light, hundreds of people came out in support and the hashtag #JusticeforJayarajandFelix became viral on social media. This garnered a tremendous amount of support from the public as well as from celebrities. This caused a stir, and upon pressure from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, a suo-moto inquiry was launched into the case.

Following this outrage, the two sub-inspectors were suspended. Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Naduri said based on the post-mortem report, action against the accused police personnel would be taken.

Mexico reported 6,104 new COVID-19 cases and 736 more deaths, bringing the nation’s total known infections to 202,951 and 25,060 deaths as of Thursday. The country’s government removed all restrictions on 13th June, which allowed more than 300,000 workers to get back, even as the country’s cases rose steadily. This decision was apparently taken by the government after “after reviewing the development of COVID-19 propagation”, as reported by the country’s secretariat.

It is to be noted that the country’s Finance Minister Arturo Herrera had recently tested positive for coronavirus after he had been reported to have not worn a mask. “I have very minor symptoms. From now on, I will be in quarantine and will keep working from home,” Herrera wrote on Twitter.

He had met with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador only three days before testing positive for the infection. However, Obrador assured of being in good health and refused to take the test.

He is not the first government official to have tested positive for coronavirus, as Social Security Director Zoe Robledo had also tested positive on June 7.

Bhutan denies cutting Assam’s water supply, calls accusations “baseless”

Following India’s border troubles with China, Pakistan, and Nepal, allegations over Bhutan stopping the water supply to Assam in India sparked doubt fire and debate in the media. People claimed that farmers in Guwahati had held protests regarding the sudden stoppage of water supply for irrigation, and accused Bhutan of cutting its water supply, that flows from man-made irrigation channel ‘Dong’ in Bhutan.

Earlier, Assamese farmers used to enter Bhutan to maintain the irrigation channels. However, the practice has been stopped due to lockdown.

Coming out in response to these claims, the Bhutan government replied that these claims were baseless and that they were merely repairing the channels. “This is a distressing allegation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to clarify that the news articles are totally baseless as there is no reason why the flow of water should be stopped at this time. It is a deliberate attempt by vested interests to spread misinformation and cause misunderstanding between the friendly people of Bhutan and Assam,” Bhutan said in an official statement.

Bhutan further added that due to the present difficult situation posed by the pandemic, it was becoming increasingly difficult for both the governments to cater to the needs of the inhabitants of both sides. It said that “disruptions caused by the heavy monsoon rains and the operational difficulties arising from the restrictions put in place by both the countries due to COVID-19”, saying that the canal will soon be reopened for use by the public.

Assam’s Chief Secretary also came out in reassurance of this issue, saying that Bhutan was merely removing the boulders that had been obstructing the flow of water.

Bihar and UP issued with thunderstorm warning as lightning kills 107 in one day

Red Alert has been issued across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, as bolts of lightning across these two states have killed 107 in one day. In Bihar, a total of 23 districts reported fatalities, with Gopalganj having recorded the maximum number of deaths, while in Uttar Pradesh, there were 24 deaths reported. Notably, all those who had died had been agricultural field workers.

A relief amount of 4 lakh has been announced for all the families who had reported fatalities due to the storm by both the state governments.

“Widespread rain after a gap causes more thunderstorm and lightning activity. Since it’s a favourable time of crop sowing, more people are out in the fields and they are the most vulnerable to a lightning strike,” Anand Shankar, a weather scientist at Patna IMD centre, said. Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his counterpart in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, have appealed to their citizens to follow the precautions imposed by the meteorological department.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to express their regret over this incident and urged the respective state governments and their party workers to help the families of the victims.

White Jesus statues, a form of white supremacy and should be torn down says civil rights activist Shaun King

All images depicting Jesus as a “white European” should be torn down because it represents a form of “white supremacy” says American writer and civil right activist Shaun King . His comments came in the backdrop of # BlackLivesMatter protests.

https://twitter.com/shaunking/status/1275106946916499456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1275106946916499456%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fswarajyamag.com%2Finsta%2Fus-civil-right-activist-shaun-king-white-jesus-statues-should-be-destroyed-as-it-represents-form-of-white-supremacy

Several violent protests have rocked the US in the wake of George Floyd’s death while in police custody late last month. King posted a series of Tweets as angry mobs continue to topple several monuments and statues of controversial historic personalities viewed as racists and colonisers.

“Yes I think the statues of the white European they claim is Jesus should also come down. They are a form of white supremacy. Always have been,” King tweeted. “In the Bible, when the family of Jesus wanted to hide, and blend in, guess where they went? EGYPT! Not Demark. Tear them down.”

King followed the post up with another, saying that “white Jesus is a lie” and a “tool of white supremacy” created to help white people use Christianity as a “tool of oppression. He added that white people would never have accepted a religion “from a Brown man.”

The image of a darker-skinned Jesus that appeared in a 2002 Popular Mechanics article, which scholars believe may be more accurate than those showing Jesus as a European was shared by him.  He said that the image would have been intolerable for white Americans who participated in slavery.

Earliest images of Christ found in Israel shows him as a person with shorter, curly hair, a depiction that was common to the eastern region of the Byzantine empire―especially in Egypt and the Syria-Palestine region. However, it disappeared from later Byzantine art.

Scientists detect hot young exoplanet like Jupiter

A young exoplanet the size of a Jupiter named HIP 67522 b was detected which is supposed to be the youngest hot Jupiter found so far. The planet takes around seven days to orbit its star which is equivalent to a mass of the sun. The star, around which it orbits, is a well-studied 17 million years old, meaning the hot Jupiter is likely only a few million years younger. The planet located just 490 light-years from earth is about 10 times the diameter of the earth, nearly same as solar system’s Jupiter. The size indicates it is a gas-dominated planet.

HIP 67522 b was identified by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which detects planets via transit method. Scientists note the dips in brightness of a star periodically that indicates that a planet is orbiting. However, young stars tend to have a lot of dark splotches on their surfaces that can look similar to transiting planets.  To avoid any discrepancy, data from the now retired Spitzer Space Telescope was taken.

Aaron Rizzuto, an exoplanets scientist at the University of Texas, said, “We will never know how unique or how common our solar system is unless we’re out there looking for the exoplanets. Exoplanets scientists are finding out how our solar system fits in the bigger picture of planet formation in the universe.”

It is being theorized about how hot Jupiters get close to their parent stars. One of the theories is that it just forms there and stays put. However, this could not be the case considering that the intense environment would vapourize most materials and disperses any newly formed planet. The other two theories consider this as the premise – a core could form if the planet forms past the snow line where frozen materials to cling like a growing snowball.

The fact that HIP 67522 b is already so close to its star and so early after its formation indicates that the hypothesis of hot Jupiter moving near to its star when the gravity of other planets around the star can drive the migration, doesn’t apply in this case.
