Taipei marches in the world’s only in-person Pride parade

The capital of Taiwan, Taipei marched to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community on 28 June 2020 while many other countries had to cancel their celebrations due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“The parade in Taipei has drawn tens of thousands of people in the past, but participant numbers were reduced both the virus and concerns of heavy rain. Still, those who did take part said it was a testament both to Taiwan’s ability to contain the virus and its commitment to rights for people of all sexual orientations,” said the Associated Press.

Taiwan was the first among other Asian states to allow gay couples to marry in May 2019. “We took a big step towards true equality, and made Taiwan a better country,” said the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen after his announcement.

Taiwanese gay civil rights activist was also present in the parade. He is the first person in Taiwan to come out as gay in a press conference on television. He played a significant role to legalize same-sex marriage in Taiwan.

Despite thunder and lightning, people gathered under the main gate of Liberty square. Keeping in mind the ongoing pandemic, a little more than 200 people showed up, and to maintain social distancing norms, rainbow-colored masks were distributed to the gathered mass.

“Taipei Pride is held on the last Saturday of October because June (pride month) is typically rainy in Taipei. The parade is being held for millions of people worldwide who are unable to march due to the coronavirus pandemic,” said Chris Horton, a Taiwan-based journalist

Taiwan is recorded to have a total of 447 COVID-19 cases out of which 435 have recovered.

Diesel prices reach record high and surpass petrol prices in Delhi

Fuel prices in Delhi saw a sharp hike today after a day’s break on Sunday. While petrol prices increased by  5p/litre, diesel saw an all-time high having been hiked up by  13 paise. The current price per litre is now ₹ 80.43 for Petrol and ₹80.53/litre for Diesel.

This comes as a huge blow to the market even as international oil prices have steadily dropped, with the crude benchmark being $40.21 per barrel. After the March 25 lockdown, the price of fuel has been hiked 22 times.

This decision has been faced with the strong opposition from all sides, including a trending hashtag on social media that said #SpeakUpAgainstFuelHike.

Notably, fuel retailers had frozen petrol and diesel rates since March 16. But, they started hiking this prices post-May 5 when the government had increased the value-added tax on fuel. Neither the petroleum ministry or the public sector undertakings that dealt with fuel-related services commented on this issue.

China locks down half a million people after corona virus spike in Beijing

China has reimposed a strict lockdown around the Beijing area after a surge in cases was noticed. The restrictions have come to force after the fear of a second wave gripped the country. China was the country where this pandemic emerged, and despite their attempts to keep it under control, these new cases threaten those efforts.

Over the last 24 hours, Beijing has reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 infection, bringing it to a total of 311.

Anxin province is the one that has been locked down and according to the officials, it would be fully enclosed and controlled. Only essential workers are allowed to leave their homes, and a single member of every household is to be granted permission for grocery shopping. This region is 90 miles to the south of Beijing and it is a part of the region that has been locked down.

This is a threat to the country’s existing conditions since they had been with zero local transmission for the past 57 days. This new lockdown puts close to 500,000 people under isolation, which is a Herculean task by itself. Almost 8 million Beijing residents have been tested for the coronavirus in just 18 days, local authorities said June 28, with the number of daily tests, expanded from 40,000 to more than 450,000.

PETA at it again: Their next target is Lakshmi

After the historic student-led Jallikattu protests that made PETA run helter-skelter, they have again returned with a new target. If it was the Jallikattu Bull last time, they have now come for Lakshmi, the elephant.

A few weeks ago, it was reported in The Commune that PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) was trying to oust the elephant Lakshmi from Sri Manakkula Vinayakar Temple in Puducherry. BJP leader from Puducherry PS. Ganeshan had alleged that PETA was behind targeting the elephant to be taken from the temple. It was said that the Forest Department had reportedly decided to keep the temple elephant Lakshmi at Kamarajar Agricultural Science Center in Kurumbapet for 15 days. Knowing this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Hindu Munnani functionaries went on to protest against this decision to move the temple elephant Lakshmi out of the temple. Following this, the Periyakadai police rushed to the spot and arrested them. The elephant was later taken from the temple as planned and housed at Krishi Vigyan Kendra campus. Lakshmi now finds herself struggling to acclimatise to the new habitat.

PETA’s Propaganda

Now, PETA India has started its online propaganda on Lakshmi. In its propaganda video, it says that Lakshmi is forced to work for hours at a stretch without food and water and is made to ‘beg’ in return for blessing devotees. It alleges that Lakshmi was being ill treated at the temple and that the elephant exhibits signs of abnormal stereotypic behaviour like swaying of head. It goes on to allege that the mahout uses bill hooks to tame Lakshmi.

Although the swaying of head (or weaving) does not constitute normal behaviour, it is not directly harmful either. The swaying of head or weaving is a result of boredom, desolation and frustration. However, elephant care takers ensure that elephants are engaged in interesting and a varied life so that they do not feel bored. The Vedapureeswarar Temple houses all required facilities for Lakshmi with a specially built pond and shed. Contrary to PETA’s claims, Lakshmi has been pampered and is given all the love and attention by her care takers, devotees and temple authorities. She shares a deep connection especially with her devotees and the natives of Puducherry.

Lakshmi’s Trauma

Despite PETA’s claim of ill treatment and the elephant carrying injuries in foot, Lakshmi was made to walk 10 kms to the Krishi Vigyan Kendra campus on tar road. In the centre she has been facing much more agony with scanty food and water and no proper shelter. A fishnet is being used to protect her. On her first night at the temporary shelter, she was almost bitten by a snake.

On June 25, it was reported in a Tamil newspaper that Lakshmi was struggling for life at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. She hasn’t slept for days due to the physical and mental trauma she has been put through at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

Lakshmi taken away unethically and illegally

Ajit Datta, co-founder of Republic Lit Fest, Editor of TFI Post and a resident of Puducherry said that the manner in which Lakshmi was taken away seemed completely unethical and illegal. He said that the Forest Department picked her up on the grounds that the temple failed to furnish the health records of Lakshmi. However, it is the Animal Husbandry Department’s job to maintain the records. He goes on to say in his Twitter post that nobody from Animal Husbandry Department was consulted and that the Forest Department failed to take the opinions of veterinarians. It seems that the mahouts were also threatened with consequences if they didn’t let Lakshmi go.

Lakshmi has been an integral part of Puducherry since 1997. She has been a part of Puducherry for more than 2 decades and has become one of its identity. She has grown around people who have loved her. PETA claims that they plan to rescue Lakshmi and release it into the wild. Temple authorities and the elephant care takers opine that Lakshmi won’t be able to survive in the wild as she is used to home – the temple.

The temple protection committee, Thirukoilgal Paadhukappu, has now asked Chief Minister V Narayanasamy to intervene and  has criticised PETA and local administration for its dubious actions. According to K Dhakshinamurthy, secretary of the committee, the elephant had all the required facilities at the temple, such as a specially-built shed and a pond.

The Hindu Makkal Katchi has been taking efforts on the ground and online. The hastag #GiveOurLakshmiBack has been initiated to rescue Lakshmi from PETA. Director Mohan G Kshatriyan has also given support to the cause asking PETA to back off. Netizens have now started questioning PETA once again for interfering in the cultural traditions of the Tamizh land.

Former DMK MP Arjunan attacks police officers for doing duty, DMK mouthpieces peddle fake news

In a video that is going viral on social media, former DMK MP from Dharmapuri can be seen using foul language and hitting and kicking a police officer on duty at a toll plaza near Salem.

The police officers on COVID duty were reportedly checking e-passes of vehicles passing through Omalur toll plaza falling under Salem district. When they asked the former DMK MP for his travel papers, he got off the front seat of the car and started behaving rudely with the police officer. One of the police officer can be seen taking a photo/video to which Arjunan says “photo puluthiriya? Puluthu da” (Taking photos is it? Take! Do whatever you want!). He threatens to beat them with slippers (seruppu pinjidun b***u). The police officers can be seen asking the former DMK MP to engage with them respectfully and behave responsibly. The former DMK MP calls the police officers as uniformed beggars (uniform pota picchaikaaranga) to which the officer replies that he is even worse.

Irked by this, the former DMK MP hits the police officer first and threatens “how dare you!” The police officer pushes back in return. Arjunan then kicks the police officer with his leg and leaves in his car.

However, DMK mouthpieces like Kalaignar Seithigal and RK Radhakrishnan (The Hindu’s Frontline Associate Editor) confused the former DMK MP Kaatiannan Arjunan with former ADMK MP K.R. Arjunan.

Kalaignar Seidhigal tweeted “Former AIADMK MP Arjunan, kicks and abuses a Sub-Inspector on duty at Salem toll plaza”

RK Radhakrishnan, a vocal DMK sympathizer and an Associate Editor of Frontline tweeted a news clipping that says “ADMK MP engages in dispute with police officer” with the caption that says “.@PoliceTamilnadu‘s third degree is reserved for the poor and the hapless. A remotely “connected” politician can do anything – including trying to kick a cop – and drive away. There’s no sense of honour, pride, self-respect or dignity in large sections of the #Police.

A lot of confusion is going on social media whether Arjunan belongs to the DMK or ADMK.

It is fact that Kattiannan Arjunan was elected from Dharmapuri as a DMK candidate in the year 1980. However, his current party affiliation is not yet confirmed.

DMK man practicing usury arrested for intimidating daily wage worker and driving him to suicide

A DMK officer bearer who had lent loans at usurious rates to a daily wage worker and later intimidated him for non-payment has been arrested.

Kalaimani, belonging to Kumarapalayam near Namakkal had taken a loan from DMK man and money lender Boopathi for his son Kaviyarasu’s studies who is pursuing his fourth year at Chidambaram Medical College.

Even though the interest rates were high, Kalaimani agreed to the terms and conditions of the loan to help his son pursue his studies. Though he was struggling to make ends meet, he made payments on time. However, he has been unable to make the interest payment with no income coming in due to the lockdown imposed due to the Chinese virus pandemic.

Enraged over the non-payment, the DMK office bearer intimidated and humiliated Kalaimani in the presence of everyone who then drank poison.

His relatives later took Kalaimani to a hospital. Following this, the police arrested the DMK man Boopathy and a case was registered for abetment to suicide (Section 306 of IPC).
