IMK calls for boycott of Vijay TV show Bigg Boss 4 anchored by Kamal Hasan

Indu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath has called for the boycott of popular voyeuristic TV show Bigg Boss 4 anchored by actor Kamal Hasan and has appealed to the Government of Tamil Nadu to take up the matter with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to ban the broadcast of the show.

In its statement to the press, the IMK has said that actor Kamal Haasan’s Bigg Boss 4 is promoting voyeurism and unhealthy content without any sense of social responsibility. It said that the content is unfit to watch and is set to degrade Tamil culture and tradition.

Bigg Boss is a show where more than 15 celebrities stay in the same house for hundred days and their daily activities are monitored through cameras which is then edited and broadcasted as a 1.5 hr show.

“The scenes are set in such a way that a married man falls in love with another and incites caste and religious sentiments.  Intimate matters are also explored in the house.  Sensual depictions of women, culturally degrading scenes that feature ideas against the family system are being portrayed in the house. We leave it to the conscience of the popular actor who is currently running a political party whether it is right to host such a show for money, fame and cheap publicity” the statement by IMK read.

“Kamal Haasan and Vijay TV have already made huge revenue through the earlier versions of the shows.  The show is being telecasted in a motto only to gain money.” the statement added.

Speaking to The Commune, IMK spokesperson Mr. Sathya Narayanan said “We all know that the impact of cinema is great among the people of Tamil Nadu.  Currently, cheap strategies are being followed by the Bigg Boss to get fame and success. In the name of task, the ‘Bigg Boss’ is creating fights among the contestants. Some of the scenes are promote illicit relationships where young men and are shown having flings.”

Adding further, he said “The show resembles a ‘midnight masala’ movie. Can women and children sit with the family and watch the show?  They use cinematic glamor to make people watch the show.  They cause such non-standard cultural degradation for money and publicity.  People should ignore this show.”

The IMK has said that it will be carrying out democratic protests calling for the ban of the show and has urged the Chief Minister to intervene and take efforts to ban the show.

Former I-PAC employee alleges harassment by company, claims threat to life

A few days ago, a former employee of Indian-Political Action Committee (I-PAC), took to LinkedIn and published a suicide note levelling serious allegations on the company as well as its head Prashant Kishor.

The person identified as Kiran Patil from Mumbai posted on his LinkedIn account that he had been subjected to continuous harassment when he was working at I-PAC and hence was being forced to end his life.

In his post he said that the organization was run by a goon named Prashant Kishor having a big clout in Indian politics and hence the police were not accepting a complaint against him.

“The organization is after my life since over a year now, they even tried to kill me by giving drugs which could cause brain haemorrhage.”, Patil wrote.

He said that I-PAC hacked his personal mobile and laptop. He also said that the company had denied him giving the relieving letter as a result of which he lost a chance to go to ISB.

Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the post, he mentioned that he had already written to him via a LinkedIn post but to no avail.

Following this, I-PAC had put out a statement that saying that Patil had sent his resignation on 14th December 2019 and that they couldn’t complete his exit formalities because the organization received a sexual harassment complaint against him from a female employee on December 15 (the next day after Patil put his papers). It said that Patil is yet to participate in the Internal Complaints Committee proceedings.

Patil later came out with another post saying that he was contacted by the SP city Jalgaon over phone who had counselled him to not take any extreme step and follow the legal route. He said that local police officers came to his house and counselled him to legal action against the organisation. He also said that sexual harassment charges against him are completely baseless and false. He also mentioned that a person named Subhash Tanan even called my parents and threatened them.

“The organisation is filthy to say the least, they run entire subisidiaries on black money, I have already complained about that to even income tax department in the past to no avail” he wrote in his post.

He noted in his post that he is going to pursue the matter legally.

In another post by Patil 3 days ago he said that his manager Zulfikar Shaikh immediately accepted on December 14 and had replied to him about getting relieved on December 16.

“But suddenly on 15th of December 2019 a fake case was filed against me and my relieving is pending since then and they are continuously harrasaing me since last 10 months, using power of their filthy money and political prowess.

Anonymous people made calls to me told me that IPAC is funded by Andhra CM Jagan Reddy, and IPAC would kill me any day.”, he wrote.

“I am surviving somehow in this trauma for the last 10 months now, my chances of going for the further education are gone and my entire career, future and life is in jeopardy.”, he said in his post.

It is to be noted that DMK has engaged Prashant Kishor and his I-PAC team to chart out the victory strategy for the Assembly polls to be held in 2021. Earlier, many complaints about the way I-PAC was recruiting gullible youngsters and college students was reported.

State cannot fund religious schools says Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (October 13) said that that the state cannot fund religious schools referring to state-funded Madrasas where Quran is taught.

“In my opinion, teaching ‘Quran’ can’t happen at the cost of government money, if we have to do so then we should also teach both the Bible and Bhagavad Gita. So, we want to bring uniformity and stop this practice,” he was quoted by ANI.

In a sweeping announcement bound to cause tension, all the state-run madrassas will be converted into regular schools as the Assam government will be shutting madrassas down.

“All State-run madrassas will be converted into regular schools or in certain cases teachers will be transferred to state-run schools and madrassas will be shut down. A notification will be released in November,” said Sarma.

Immediately after the announcement, the chief of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal said that his party would re-open the Madrassas after coming to power in the next year’s Assembly elections.

Some legislators were demanding provincialisation of madrasas during the discussion on budgetary allocation for the education department.

Land grab by Church in Karnataka and Kerala, a review

illegal church lrpf landgrab

Recently, the Karnataka High Court ordered the removal of illegal church occupations in Chikkaballapur in Karnataka. A mammoth-size cross and the statue was illegally placed on government-owned pasture land, also known as gomala, to facilitate encroachment. The operation was executed by Assistant Commissioner Raghunandan, Tehsildar Tulasi under the watch of Superintendent of Police (Chikkaballapur) Mithun Kumar.

But, these are not the first instance where churches encroach Government owned lands and misuse it for proselytization purposes. Here, we bring out how lands to the tune of several hectares have been encroached upon by the Church in two states.

Instances of Church-sponsored land encroachment in Karnataka

Church of South India Trust Association (CSITA) entered into an arrangement with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a Karnataka government undertaking, for transfer of the title of a defence land measuring about 7,427 square metres.

The above said land was earlier leased to the All Saints’ Church. The BMRCL acquired the land through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board. The BMRCL has acquired land across Bengaluru for its next stage of the city’s Metro project and the land is question is part of the new line. The land which the Church claims as its own is adjacent to the military compound that houses a military school and its training facilities.

An ED probe revealed that the title of the land belonged to the Defence Ministry and it was only leased out to the All Saints’ Church for conducting religious affairs. No proprietary right of the land had been transferred. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth ₹59.52 crore of the Church of South India Trust Association (CSITA) in connection with a money laundering case. The movable assets are in the form of fixed deposits maintained with the State Bank of India’s Sudhamanagar branch in Bengaluru.

These are just tip of the iceberg. Churches in South India with active patronage of politicians, Christian organizations are involved in propping up churches in government owned lands, hills etc. The modus operandi is the same – first, it will start with planting illegal crosses and bringing in Christian believers for Sunday masses and after a few months they will start building churches and will acquire entire ownership of lands without any paperwork. Due to fear of backlash by Christian voters political parties will not even raise an issue on encroachments.

In 2016, the Serious Fraud Investigation Office had begun probing into the financial irregularities at the Church of South India after individual audits found discrepancies in the books of the Church of South India Trust Association in Chennai. The Registrar of Companies (RoC), through an inspection audit in 2015 and a series of income-tax audits since 2010, found the institution was not providing a clear picture of its accounts and not maintaining a list of properties which had mandated a SIFO investigation.

In the year 2016 Christian community members of 46 churches of Chikkamagaluru diocese had accused Bishop Anthony Swamy and Father Shantharaj of being involved in irregularities regarding lands pertaining to St. Joseph Education Society and have demanded a probe against them.

Community leader Stanly D’Silva said, “The diocese owns an agricultural land at Baskal. It is a multi crop estate. In 2016, the administration of the diocese cultivated pepper and sold it. There is a huge amount of change in price which denotes that the bishop and his close aides have made money by selling the produce for higher prices. When lay leaders tried to seek clarification on it, Bishop Anthony Swamy and Fr Shantharaj are not ready to give a convincing answer.”

Secondly, without permission of the governing council, the bishop has reportedly transferred the land of St Joseph Education Society to his name and made six sites and sold them to private parties. A donor donated this land to the diocese for the construction of a school for poor children in 1984. But now, the bishop has become the owner of this land and with forged documents and signatures. The bishop also sold another 20 guntas land which was donated by an individual for the construction of hostel. The current value of this land is ₹18 crore. But the bishop says that he sold it for ₹2.10 crore. Any layman would sense that there is a scam in this deal and that the bishop has received a bigger amount under a secret agreement. We suspect that there is a scam in this deal and the bishop has received a bigger amount under a secret agreement.

“Apart from this, the bishop and his close aides are ruling the diocese as autocrats. There are no rights for community members and lay leaders to express their opinions. The bishop himself is taking all decisions and does not listen to anyone. If this continues the same way, it will pave way for a riot within the community,” Stanly was quoted saying in the media.

The Maharashtra government’s law and judiciary department prepared report dated back in 2009 with respect to Bombay Diocesan Trust Association (BDTA) Pvt Ltd in which it noted that it  was a “bogus trust” whose “bogus trustees” indulged in many illegal activities to grab the properties of genuine Christian trusts. Report also lists questionable property sale and lease deals in Mumbai, Pune, Hubli (Karnataka) and Gujarat,

The above inquiry acknowledges a series of reports by DNA and Zee News in September-October, 2008, highlighting the skullduggery. Thousands of acres of prime land across the country, managed by more than 200 trusts and associations of the Church of North India, have been put on the block, raising concerns among ordinary church-goers.  According to some legal experts, these lands actually belong to the government and its agencies, including the Defense Ministry, and the trusts are merely custodians of the properties.

Hindu Welfare Forum in the month of March 2020,filed a complaint to district administration about encroaching of 70 acres of Government land by St. Lawrence Church in Attur, Karnataka. They also alleged that the land is now being used for illegal trade of timber wood. The complaint also alleges public road has been destroyed and illegally erection of barb wires around the hill.

Church acknowledges encroachment in Kerala

In a 2019 press release , the church acknowledged the land scam in Kerala . “The land scam related to the archdiocese has deeply hurt the church in the past two years. The crisis had become grave as the allegations were against the head and Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church. The synod has understood that there have been lapses in collective responsibility in the land deals,”.

A recent study by the Malabar Devaswom Department in Kerala has revealed that the largest encroachment of Devaswom land took place in Malabar region (The Hindu, September 24, 2008). According to official figures, more than 24,900 acres of land belonging to 353 temples under the Malabar Devaswom Board has been encroached upon (The Hindu, April 5, 2010).

Official records show that 245 temples under the Kochi Devaswom Board have also lost land to encroachment, but the extent of land lost has not yet been fully calculated. Around 3,000 acres owned by the Travancore Devaswom Board has been encroached, as admitted by the president of Travancore Devaswom (Times of India, January 5, 2016).

Madhav Gadgil, who headed the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, says that irresponsible environmental policy is to blame for the current floods and landslides in Kerala. He called it a “manmade calamity” (The Economic Times, August 17, 2018). The south west monsoon floods which have currently devastated Kerala are an outcome of the land encroachment of Ecologically Sensitive Zones in Western Ghats by Syro-Malabar Catholic Church intimidating and unleashing armed violence against environmental committees and reports, using vote bank and money power.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where the influence of Church is even more higher have encroached temple lands and government lands.

It is high time governments of the day work effectively in unearthing all the scams associated with land appropriation by Churches and recover the land.

Son-in-law of MLA KK Selvam who left DMK killed in road accident

Tulasiraman (50), son-in-law of Thousand Lights MLA KK Selvam was killed in a road accident near Poonamallee on Sunday (October 11). He is the husband of the eldest daughter of KK Selvam.

On Sunday evening, Tulasiraman had gone on a two-wheeler to meet his daughter studying medicine at a private dental college in Poonamallee. On his way back home, an unidentified vehicle hit him. The person who caused the accident is said to have admitted him to the hospital and fled. The Poonamallee Traffic Investigation Division police investigation has revealed that the person who caused the accident had gone away as soon as he was admitted for treatment. Police are inspecting to see if there are any CCTV footage of the area where the accident took place.

Tualsiraman’s father is a retired SP in the Chennai Police. Tulsiraman lived in Kodambakkam, Chennai. He worked for a famous plywood company in Valasaravakkam.

It is to be noted that KK Selvam representing Thousand lights constituency in Chennai left the DMK and took a pro-BJP stance following a rebellion. A close friend of DMK chief MK Stalin, he had a disagreement over the appointment of the DMK district secretary. He demanded that DMK chief must hold internal party elections and snap ties with the Congress and the Gandhi family. He had also asked Stalin to condemn Karuppar Koottam, a Youtube channel that had made a derogatory video related to a holy hymn on Lord Murugan.

When he had met the BJP leaders in Delhi without informing the party high command, Selvam had said that he was ready to face disciplinary action from the party.

KK Selvam is yet to join the BJP.

Many have raised concerns over the timing of this accident and have alleged larger conspiracies. Popular vlogger Maridhas has called for a probe by the government if whether the DMK leadership is involved either directly or indirectly.

‘Ekatvam’ costs dear for Titan, share prices drop after #BoycottTanishq episode

After the #BoycottTanishq hashtag went viral on Twitter, Titan’s jewellery brand Tanishq has taken down the controversial advertisement from YouTube. The advertisement in question featured the baby shower function of a Hindu woman who had married into an Islamic household. After the several complaints that cited that it promoted love jihad, the ad no longer exists on their official page.

The advertisement shows a baby shower being hosted by a Muslim family for their Hindu daughter-in-law. Towards the end of the video, the young woman points out to her mother-in-law that baby shower is not a tradition in their household, with the mother-in-law replying: “Isn’t it a tradition for every home to keep daughters happy?”

This ad is for the brand’s new collection called Ekatvam, translating unity or oneness.

The ad received severe backlash from the Hindu community as the ad indirectly promoted targeting of Hindu girls by Muslim men.  Several tweets flooded the microblogging platform with most of them calling out its cultural insensitivity.

One Tanishq showroom in Gujarat condemned the ad and apologised profusely for the ad.

Similarly, a lot of people came in support of this particular advertisement, including Congress MPs Abhishek Singhvi and Shashi Tharoor.

However, Titan took down the ad stating that it had ‘stimulated divergent and severe reactions contrary to its objective’.

Following the ad’s failure, Titan, which owns Tanishq fared poor at the stock markets on Tuesday.  Its stock prices fell by 2.58% from Rs. 1,257.55 to Rs. 1,224.35. While the fall in share prices cannot be directly attributed to the ad episode, Titan saw its collective wealth erode by ₹2700 crores.

“My Hindutva does not need your certificate”: MH CM and Governor engage in war of words over temple reopening

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who was benevolent when he asked Muslim leaders to organise low-key Bakri Eid celebrations without violating rules is now embroiled in a war of words with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Koshyari wrote a letter to the Chief Minister regarding the reopening of all places of worship.

In his letter, the Maharashtra Governor took a jibe at Uddhav ‘Hindutva’ credentials and wrote “….You have been a strong votary of Hindutva. You have publicly espoused your devotion for Lord Rama by visiting Ayodhya after taking charge as Chief Minister. You visited Vitthal Rukmini Mandir in Pandharpur and performed the puja on Ashadi Ekadashi.”

Governor Koshyari bluntly told Thackeray that it is “ironical that while on one hand the state government permitted opening of bars, restaurants and beaches, our gods and goddesses have been condemned to stay in the lockdown”.

The Governor in the last three months had met with, several delegations of Hindu religious leaders who had demand reopening of places of religious worship.

In his letter to Uddhav Thackeray, the Governor asked him, “I wonder if you are receiving any divine premonition to keep postponing the reopening of the places of worship time and again or have you suddenly turned ‘secular’ yourself, the term you hated,”.

Uddhav wrote, “Received your letter asking to reopen all worshipping places. Government is thinking about this. But we do care about the lives of the People of Maharashtra. That’s why the way we impose lockdown slowly it is necessary to lift the lockdown slowly. We are taking all care in tho battle with Corona by implementing health campaigns and making people aware of it.”

Uddhav took affront to the Hindutva jibe Koshyari had mentioned and said, “You have mentioned my stand of ‘Hindutva’ in that letter but I don’t need a certificate of ‘Hindutva’ from you and don’t need to learn it from anyone else. The person who calls my state or Mumbai as POK, I don’t welcome such people at home. That’s not my ‘Hindutva’. You have also said in the letter. ”

The reference to Pakistan occupied Kashmir was a jibe at Kangana Ranaut who has been a thorn in the flesh of the Shiv Sena.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that the Governor’s letter to the Chief Minister invokes the connotation as if it was written by the leader of a political party.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is organising protests and demonstrations across the state, with supporters holding placards which read “Liquor on…..Temple shut, Uddhav your work should be shut”.

Man from Assam spends out of his pocket and constructs roads for his village

In a day and age where people are incessantly complaining about the government not catering to their needs like constructing roads and providing clean water, Utpal Jyoti Dadhora, a local youth from the village of Lehugaon decided to take matters into his own hands after getting tired of waiting for the government’s response.

The arterial road connecting Lehugaon and Nagaon had been affected due to natural calamities and was in a very bad condition. Local villages and even the MLA had asked the government to construct the road to no avail.

Finally, Utpal had come forward and spent his own money to construct the road and help the villagers. He spent ₹2 lakh of his own money to construct roads in his village.

Utpal said that due to the worsening condition of the road, the villagers were facing a lot of problems. “I am trying to help the villagers and give some relief from the problems they are facing. Earlier, the villagers met the local MLA and he assured a proper the road, but he didn’t do anything,” Utpal said. He was also quoted saying, “They (MLAs and government) assured us that all rural roads in our area will be constructed very soon. But we couldn’t wait any longer.”
