Windows 10 to see change in start menu design

Microsoft is introducing a new start menu design for Windows 10 that will de-emphasize its Live Tiles. It arrived for windows testers on July 2

Microsoft, in its blog post, explained, “We are freshening up the start menu with a more streamlined design that removes the solid color backplates behind the logos in the apps list and applies a uniform, partially transparent background to the tiles.”

The reduction in the color of the blocky tiled interface on the start menu will simplify it slightly and make it easier to scan for the apps you use on a daily basis. It’s a subtle change, but it surely will make the start menu look like less chaotic and avoids many tiles sharing a similar blue color, the Verge reported.

Along with this, the Alt-Tab also will see an update. “Beginning with today’s build, all tabs open in Microsoft Edge will start appearing in Alt-Tab, not just the active one in each browser window,” explains Microsoft.

PETA’s double standards: Puts hoardings appealing to stop goat slaughter ahead of Bakra Eid, removes them after Islamic clerics oppose

PETA, a deplorable non-governmental organization known for interfering in Hindu cultural practices under the garb of animal rights, tried to do the same with Bakra Eid but backtracked after facing opposition from Muslim clerics.

A hoarding of a goat that says “I am a life, I am not meat” urging people to change their view animals and go vegan was removed after Islamic clerics objected to it.

The hoarding put up in Qaiserbagh in Uttar Pradesh.

President of the Islamic Centre of India, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali complained to the Lucknow Police Commissioner demanding the removal of the hoarding.

“Bakrid is to be celebrated on July 31. What is the need for putting such a hoarding just ahead of the festival? This is done deliberately to hurt Muslim sentiments”, he said.

Athar Hussain, the Director of Centre for Objective Research and Development (CORD) also sent a letter objecting to the hoarding of PETA.

“Muslims observe ‘qurbani’ (sacrifice) on the festival. The hoarding is sending out a wrong message, it is objectionable. The community strongly objects to it”, Hussain said.

Other clerics too objected to the hoarding saying that it has been done to “spoil the law and order situation”.

Facing backlash, PETA gave in and removed the hoarding.

Meanwhile, PETA has reportedly taken the Manakula Vinayagar Temple elephant Lakshmi illegally and has been subjecting it to physical and mental torture. Read the full story here.

Trump vows to defeat radical left, targets China in Independence Day speech

US President Donald Trump addressed the country on the country’s 4th of July Independence Day from Mount Rushmore. In his speech he said, “We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters, and people who in many instances have absolutely no clue what they are doing.”

He had accused “angry mobs” of deploying “cancel culture” to demand “total submission from anyone who disagrees” – referring to protests regarding statues of controversial historical figures.

These statements had been direct references to the #BlackLivesMatter movement following the death of George Floyd, an African American man who had died in police custody. What started as a protest of solidarity against police brutality, took a violent turn with buildings and businesses vandalized and burnt.

While criticism has been mounting over his handling of the pandemic, he said that China must be held accountable for failing to contain the pandemic.

Critics of Trump said that it sounded more like an election campaign than a Presidential address.

In his speech President Trump stumbled over several words – most notably “totalitarianism”. The President also  struggled to say “Ulysses S Grant”, and appeared to briefly freeze while talking about Thomas Jefferson. Many took to Twitter to mock his speech, and even tried ‘spelling out’ totalitarianism for his benefit.

Following his speech, Trump and the first lady watched a spectacular display of military jets that have taken part in America’s military conflicts from the second world war onwards.

ISRO’s Mars rover captures never-seen-before images of Mars’ moon, Phobos

ISRO’s Mars rover, Mangalyaan, recently captured the images of Mars’ elusive moon, Phobos. ISRO declassified these images on Friday and released them. It was captured on the Mars Colour Camera (MCC) aboard the Mars Orbiter, from a distance of 4,200 KM.

“Spatial resolution of the image is 210 m. This is a composite image generated from 6 MCC frames and has been color corrected,” ISRO said in an update along with the image.

“Phobos is largely believed to be made up of carbonaceous chondrites. The violent phase that Phobos has encountered is seen in the large section gouged out from a past collision, (Stickney crater) and bouncing ejecta. Stickney, the largest crater on Phobos along with the other craters (Shklovsky, Roche and Grildrig) are also seen in this image,” ISRO further said.

According to ISRO, “the violent phase that Phobos has encountered is seen in the large section gouged out from a past collision (Stickney crater) and bouncing ejecta.”

The Mangalyaan mission was launched on November 5, 2013, by PSLV-C25, an expandable launch system, and entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, in its first attempt. This MOM mission aims at studying the Martian surface and mineral composition as well as scan its atmosphere for methane (an indicator of life on Mars).

Hope spelt for the third gender as BSF, CRPF and SSB announce posts for transgenders

In a milestone initiative, the Border Security Force (BSF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have come out in support of the Union Home Ministry’s appeal for the inclusion of the third gender and said that they were ready to recruit transgenders in officer cadres for their contingents.

On April 15, 2014 judgement of the Supreme Court declaring transgender people as the Third Gender. Following this, Parliament passed The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act in 2019. This law prohibits discrimination of the third gender in any form and provides a redressal mechanism for their grievances. Following this, the Ministry of Human Affairs (MHA) had appealed to the paramilitary forces to send in their comments about accomodating them in the forces.

This was followed by the statements of the above forces, affirming that they are ready to make necessary changes in the force and suggested amendments to recruitment rules for helping transgender people to join the force at Assistant Commandant-level. The ITBP and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Centre are expected to respond soon.

The annual examination for recruiting ACs, who are Grade A officers, for this year, is scheduled to be held in December and the comments of these forces will be sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which will then incorporate transgender people as the third gender in the application forms.

Remembering Alluri Sitarama Raju: The Forgotten Hero Who Shook The Very Roots Of The British Raj

While the entire nation in the early 1900s was fighting against The British Raj, joining Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement and such, there was a hero who was such a strong rebel, that the British had to race a special force which was trained in guerrilla warfare to catch him. His name was Alluri Sitarama Raju, fondly remembered as the Maanyam Veerudu (Hero of the Jungle).

Despite being a staunch Gandhian, he broke just one rule of that philosophy: non-violence. He trained an entire tribal force in guerrilla warfare to bring about a full-scale rebellion in the Madras presidency. Notably, he was not a tribal himself.

While a lot of other freedom fighters have been remembered time and again during each Independence Day and Republic Day, Sitarama Raju remains to be one of the lesser-known faces of the movement on a national level.

Early life

The details of his early life are very disputed, as there are different versions in different records. He was born to Venkata Rama Raju and Suryanarayanamma.

The records of his education are also very distorted as people say that he never had a formal educational background. He had taken a particular interest in topics like astrology, herbalism, palmistry, and horse riding, post which he became an ascetic at 18 years of age.

He then resorted to roaming the hills and forests of the Godavari Agency, the region now known as the East and West Godavari districts. There are several folktales and lore surrounding him, that say that he was someone with magical powers. He was even regarded as a Messiah of sorts to the tribal communities in the area, as they had been excessively or pressed into a humiliating existence.

The Rampa Rebellion

The Madras Forest Act had been passed in 1882 which had prevented the free movement of tribals in the forests which prevented from engaging in traditional podu agriculture, the shifting cultivation method prevalent in Andhra region.

Raju had initially adopted a staunch Gandhian methodology wherein he had the tribal community boycotting the justice systems established by the British rule and resorting to the Panchayati Raj. As the Non-Cooperation Movement died out in 1922, he used the momentum that had been triggered due to this movement and used it to recruit locals and train them in Gorilla warfare practices.

This came to be formerly known as the Rampa rebellion. Raju led 500 people under this movement, ravaging colonial symbols and structures at various provinces around the Godavari Agency. They snatched all the weapons in armoury during these attacks and continued to wreak havoc in the minds of the British. The first of such attacks was made on Chintapalli police station in the Visakhapatnam Agency area on August 22, 1922, with over 300 revolutionaries under the leadership of Raju taking part in it. Subsequently, similar attacks were made on the Krishnadevi Peta and Raja Ommangi police stations.

A large contingent, which was called the special Malabar force, was then trained by the British in Gorilla Warfare in order to nab this tribal hero.

Death and posthumous accolades

On May 7th, 1924, he was trapped by the British in the forests of Chintapalli, and shot to death by having been tied to a tree in Koyyuru village.

His tomb now resides in Krishna Devi Peta village, and he has been posthumously conferred with the titles Maanyam Veerudu and Mannem Dora. In 1986, the Indian government issued a stamp in his honour commemorating his birth anniversary.

The Andhra Pradesh state government has also proposed to develop his birthplace, which is now the village of Pandrangi, and has declared that one of the new districts is to be named after this revolutionary leader. His biography is also to be included in the state board’s curriculum. There has also been an appeal to the central government to install his statue in the Parliament premises, which was recently accepted by the Central Government.

This forgotten hero is lesser-known in other parts of India as well as the world. The Commune pays obeisance to one of the greatest revolutionaries of Indian Freedom Struggle on his 155th birth anniversary.
