Clinical trials of India’s first COVID-19 vaccine to start with 375 people

Bharat BioTech, the Hyderabad based company that announced the country’s first COVID-19 vaccine COVAXIN a few weeks ago, is all set to conduct its first set of clinical trials with 375 people in the first set. Covaxin will be tested on more than 1,100 people in phase 1 and 2 clinical trials.  This vaccine was developed by the company in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology in Pune and was derived from an isolated strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus. This is touted to be launched by August 15.

On July 2, ICMR Director chief Dr. Balram Bhargava wrote to 12 trial sites for the indigenous vaccine, stating that all clinical trials need to be completed by August 15. However, the August 15 target was criticized by experts who said that fast-tracking vaccine trials in four weeks could pose serious health risks. In a statement on Monday, the Indian Academy of Sciences, a Bengaluru-based body of scientists, said that while it wishes the vaccine is quickly made available for public use, the announced timeline is únfeasible’ and unrealistic’.

Amidst all of this, two other companies have also come up with vaccines of their own. Zydus Pharma and BioNTech, (which collaborated with Pfizer) recently announced their own vaccine candidates, which had been approved by DCGI. This brings the total number of companies that are working on a potential coronavirus vaccine to 6.

Meanwhile, the country has surpassed Russia’s numbers and stands third in the world with more than 11.6 million, while the death toll is 5,37,000.

Exiled from their homeland, Uighurs call for investigation over China’s ‘racial genocide’

A group of Uighurs who had been exiled from Mainland China filed a petition with the criminal court along with evidence to prove the Chinese government’s ‘racial genocide’. The submission made on Monday by lawyers based in London on behalf of two activists groups marks the first time advocates have attempted to use international law against China over allegations of widespread human rights violations in Xinjiang, the far north-western territory of China where Uighur and other minority groups are detained and surveilled en masse.

This was filed on behalf of the “East Turkistan Government in Exile and the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement”. It claims that the Uighurs were illegally uprooted from their native land of Tajikstan, and Cambodia, and subjected to imprisonment and concentration camp-like setups. This evidence includes witness accounts, satellite imagery, and leaked government orders documenting the large-scale detention and control over Uighurs in Xinjiang.

It also places its concerns towards the investigations of crimes against Uighurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and other Turkic peoples. This includes the aforementioned crimes, along with various disappearances.

Although the entire world is coming out in condemnation about this, they have not been able to sanction China, because of the fact that the events in Xinjiang have constantly been claimed by China to be their “internal affairs”. These issues have only escalated after the new security law.

China-Nepal meeting raises eyebrows

Recently, the Chinese ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanwi met the government officials and political leaders of Nepal. Considering Nepal’s internal politics, the meeting sparked questions regarding Beijing’s hand in Kathmandu’s politics.

The Chinese ambassador to Nepal had met the President Bidya Bhandari and senior Nepal Communist Party leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.

The Kathmandu post had reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted at the President’s Office was not aware of this meeting. The sole responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to brief the President on meetings with foreign ambassadors or dignitaries.

The Kathmandu post also reported that officials in the Foreign Ministry have said that the President’s Office has been violating the diplomatic code of conduct repeatedly.

It is speculated that they discussed the ongoing conflict within the ruling party.

Deputy Chief of the Foreign Relations Department said, “I don’t have details about the meeting between Nepal and Ambassador Hou but as far as I understand Chinese protocol, the Chinese begin meeting too ranking officials and gradually come down to other officials.”

Regarding the recent meeting, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Zhang Si said, “The embassy keeps good relationships with Nepali leaders and is ready to exchange views on issues of common interest at any convenient time.”

When most countries opposed the Chinese security law regarding Hong Kong, Nepal voted in favour of the law.

Although it is projected that the meeting was held in good spirits, there are rumours saying that Beijing is planning to expand its political doctrine to Nepal.

Chennai-based company develops device to aid COVID-19 patients and nurses

Etticos, a Chennai-based company claims to have developed a device to bridge the gap between healthcare workers and COVID-19 patients.

Vigneshwar, the CEO of the company that came up with Etticos COVID-19 Patient Care System says that a patient can communicate with healthcare workers using this smart button.

He says that the pandemic has had a psychological effect on both patients and healthcare workers. If a patient is suspected to have contracted the virus and is admitted in a hospital, “there will not be an attendant” at all times. This is to reduce the risk for nurses to get infected. “There needs to be something to bridge this gap,” he adds.

The device can be handed to the patients and they can press the button in case they need assistance. On pressing the button, the nurse will get the patient’s information which includes the name and room number on the display at the nurse’s station.

A single press would mean that the patient requires water, a double press is for medicine and triple press is for other cases of emergency. More than 100 patientients can be displayed at once. The distance between the nurse and the patient can be upto 1 kilometer, which can be increased further accordingly.

The device is patented and completely ‘Made in India’. He says it cost ranges between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 3000. However, it can also be reduced.

“Who is going to be the next General Secretary of DMK?” Duraimurugan in tension, cadres in confusion

It has been a rough time for the DMK over the past few months. Facing setbacks in by-elections and local body elections, morale of the cadres remain at an all-time low. On one had hand, there is a rising anti-DMK wave, thanks to social media. Time and again, the party leaders find themselves in controversies by making distasteful remarks against certain sections of the Tamil populace especially the Dalits and Brahmins. The DMK chief MK Stalin has given a new life to the creative minds aka meme creators owing to his oratory skills.

On the other hand, the discontentment against the party and the leadership is also engulfing the party cadres. A senior leader of the DMK quit the party and joined the BJP Tamil Nadu who has now become the State Vice President. The DMK has also been facing flak over the death of its Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni MLA Anbazhagan who succumbed to COVID19. Even the DMK cadres themselves are openly blaming the party’s propaganda initiative “Ondrinaivom Vaa” (let’s come together) as the MLA who had comorbidities contracted the virus when he was involved in the campaign.

In light of this, another headache has been lingering for a while for the party – who will be the next general secretary of the party? Veteran DMK leader Prof. K. Anbazhagan served as the party’s general secretary for 9 terms. Post his demise in March 2020, the party’s confusion over who the next general secretary will be has escalated. It is but natural for both cadres and political observers to expect Duraimurugan to get the post. Months have passed since Anbazhagan’s demise but there has been no announcement on this yet. Party insiders and cadres of the DMK are speculating whether Prashant Kishor and his IPAC team are brewing something. Those close to the corridors of Arivalayam say that Duraimurugan remains anxious and frustrated about whether he will get to be the party’s general secretary or not. It is being said that there exists a group that is opposing him being given the post. Some others openly say that had Karunanidhi been alive, he would have definitely elevated and decorated Duraimurugan as general secretary. However, it would be naïve to even think so because the DMK is a family enterprise and nobody out of the Karunanidhi family can afford to have aspirations for higher posts in the party.

The post of general secretary is a coveted one in the DMK. It was held by Prof. K. Anbazhagan till his death. It has remained vacant since then. It is being said that senior leaders like R.S. Bharathi, A.V. Velu, and I. Periyasamy are after this post.

This post was traditionally helmed by persons belonging to the Mudaliar community like C.N. Annadurai, Nedunchezhiyan, and Prof. K. Anbazhagan.

A section of the cadres want this custom to continue and are lobbying for people like R.S. Bharathi.

Earlier, the DMK President MK Stalin had asked Duraimurugan to resign from his post of DMK Treasurer. He too obliged, but has been kept on the hook ever since. However, very soon, things took a turn and Duraimurugan was reinstated as treasurer by Stalin. This has raised doubts whether Stalin would make Duraimurugan the general secretary or would sideline him for someone else.

There is also another angle to the crisis that DMK is facing. It is also said that there is a contest for the post between the members of the Karunanidhi family. The unsuccessful election campaign led by Stalin gives opportunity on a platter to his brother, Mr.Alagiri who is waiting for his turn to make a return. However sources say that Kanimozhi and Alagiri are in constant touch and Kanimozhi is viewed as a forerunner after the elevation of Udhayanindi Stalin. In fact, Stalin’s move to make Udhayanidhi Stalin the youth wing head of the party was to counter Kanimozhi’s and Alagiri’s rise.

The lone stalwart Duraimuragan seems to be unhappy over Udhayanidhi’s elevation and the equilibrium is now slowly shifting to Kanimozhi. Given the fact that none of the Karunanidhi family had chosen the southern bastion as a political prospect, Kanimozhi chose Thoothukudi and emerged victorious. It was said at that time that Sabareesan wanted her to face defeat so that Stalin’s path to have a zero competitor is assured. However with the induction of Prashant Kishor who is entangled with a discontent from P.T. Palanivel Thiagarajan along with the on-going internal tussle between Udhayanidhi and Kanimozhi, Stalin’s incapability to gain solid momentum on political grounds are adding fuel to fire amongst the top brass of DMK. While the unit looks brighter from outside and given the style of operation by BJP it is a matter of time that DMK shall fall like a pack of cards before the run to the assembly election.

Currently, Duraimurugan is staying at his luxury bungalow in Yelagiri due to the curfew enforced to contain the spread of the virus. He is disappointed as he thought he would soon be declared as the general secretary. Arivalayam sources say that he is also adamant of getting the coveted post and has apparently vowed to his followers that he would that go to any extent to get it.

However, MK Stalin has been busy changing his hairstyle and giving daily statements against the government for the measures it is taking against the pandemic. He is yet to make some time for deciding on the post of who the next general secretary will be. It looks like he hasn’t received orders from the Prashant Kishor or the quad group (Udhayanidhi, Stalin’s son-in-law Sabareesan, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Mohan Karthik) who currently seem to have a greater hold over the party and its affairs than Stalin himself.
