“Tamil Nadu’s first Muslim capital”: Locals and Hindu organizations oppose plaque installed at government building, gets it removed

A panchayat office building constructed by the government at Periyapattinam village in Ramanathapuram district had a plaque with the inscription declaring that Periyapattinam is Tamil Nadu’s first capital of the Muslims.

The plaque that was installed at the new building read:

“Tamil Nadu’s first Muslim capital Periyapattinam

The first Islamic monarch to appear on Tamil soil was Sultan Syed Ibrahim, who ruled for about twelve years (from 1195 AD to 1207 AD) with Periyapattinam as his capital.”

It was said that this building was to be inaugurated by Ramanathapuram MP Nawaskani of the Indian Union Muslim League.

This plaque had caused a furore among the locals who had raised objections stating how the government can allow for such words to be inscribed to a public funded building.

Hindu organizations had cautioned that such actions would pave way for Islamic fundamentalism.

Sources from local Hindu organizations said that the district administration was initially reluctant in removing the plaque.

However, locals and other Hindu organizations had stated that if the plaque was not removed, they would place a plaque at the District Collectorate that lists the Hindu kings belonging to the Sethupathi clan.

Not just stopping at the word, the stone plaque of Sethupathi kings was even made ready.

Following this, the controversial plaque installed at the government building was removed.

Gaurav Sharma, an Indian-immigrant New Zealand doctor has been elected into the New Zealand Parliament after Saturday’s elections. He is a native of Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur and won the seat as a part of Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party.

Himachal Pradesh Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur congratulated Sharma and said that the state was proud of him.

Gaurav had moved to New Zealand with his family when he had been in class 9. His father had resigned his government job in Himachal Pradesh’s electricity board to move to New Zealand. In the initial stages, they had been homeless for a brief period of time, sleeping on park benches.

Speaking to the press, Gaurav said, “I am in politics for social service, as my family had gone through a lot of hardships. What really helped us was social security, which New Zealand did really well — not so much now, though”. “This is the start because we have to make sure that we keep the promises we make, as the Opposition will hold us accountable for not fulfilling our promises”, he added.

Gaurav Sharma studied Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery at The University of Auckland Medical School and later earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from The George Washington University in Washington DC where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Poland to use football stadium as COVID facility as cases surge

Poland is all set to convert its UEFA football stadium into a coronavirus treatment facility as the coronavirus cases in the country continue to increase. Built for the UEFA Euro 2012 football championships, the 60,000-seat stadium has conference rooms under its stands able to accommodate patients.

The decision came days after the government asked Poles to “stay home” and “work remotely” if possible as it announced a raft of restrictions to stem infections. “About 500 beds will be installed in the stadium to receive people requiring hospitalisation,” government spokesman Piotr Muller told the commercial Polsatnews channel.

The new facility, that will have around 50 intensive care beds, will be ready to accept patients by the end of the week. Field hospitals could be created in each of Poland’s 16 administrative regions if need be.

Roughly half of Poland was designated a coronavirus “red zone” as of Saturday, with secondary schools switching to distance learning. Stricter restrictions have been imposed in terms of conducting events and such, and restaurants have been banned from operating post 9 PM.

This year’s Durga Pujo to have ‘no entry’ pandals in Kolkatta

With only a few days to go for the Durga Puja festivities in West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court has ordered all puja pandals to be made into a ‘no entry’ zone in connection with the coronavirus restrictions. This was following a PIL that had been filed regarding the pooja rituals. This has come as a huge blow to all the ‘pandal’ hoppers who had been awaiting this year’s Durga Pujo celebrations.

“The court’s order further mentioned that the smaller pandals will have barricades five metres beyond the extremities of the pandals and 10 metres beyond the extremities of the bigger pandals,” said Advocate Sabyasachi Chatterjee, the petitioner of the PIL.

“For smaller pujas, 15 committee members and 25 members for the bigger pujas will be permitted to enter the pandal. Names have to be identified earlier and displayed outside the pandal. It has to be one fixed list and not a floating one,” said the court.

The number of people entering and exiting a puja pandal is also to be strictly monitored, and no ‘hopping’ is to be allowed. There are 3,000 Durga puja pandals in Kolkata and 31,000 Durga puja pandals in all districts of West Bengal. The court’s direction will be applicable for all 34,000 Durga puja pandals in the state.

Haryana High Court issues ruling for minor bride to stay with in-laws after parents oppose

The Haryana High Court has issued a ruling in a case that involved a 17-year-old minor couple who got married against the consent of the girl’s parents and permitted the girl to live with her in-laws.

In this case, a 17-year-old girl and a boy were allegedly married to each other and the girl’s parents had objected to the marriage. The parents had approached the High Court. The court ruled that the girl was allowed to stay with the boy’s mother until she reached the age of majority.

“In considering their request, there is no clarity in our laws regarding child marriages. It is also unclear in the Hindu Marriage Act between non-major persons. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012 makes it a crime to have any sexual activity or sexual intercourse with a woman under the age of 18, even if she is his wife. Exception 2 to Section 375 IPC states that sexual and sexual acts with a wife over the age of 15 are not abusive. There are many contradictions like this,” the court pointed out.

“The court cannot say that we should forcibly hand over the girl to her parents or keep her in a care home until she turns 18, against her will. Therefore, the girl can stay with the boy’s mother under police surveillance until she reaches the age of 18, which should be monitored by the Child Welfare Committee, ”the court further ordered.

800, to be produced by Movie Train Motion Pictures and Dar Motion Pictures, has been receiving a lot of flak from fringe elements, claiming that Muthiah Muralitharan was a supporter of the Rajapaksa government, accused of committing excesses during the Sri Lankan civil war.

It is to be noted that Muthiah Muralitharan is the coach for IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad owned by Kalanithi Maran, member of the Karunanidhi family. It was the Karunanidhi government that was in power when the war was at its zenith.

It is unfortunate that this has to happend to him.”, he said.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar gives last warning to CM Mamata Banerjee

In a strongly-worded statement given by West Bengal, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar yesterday (18 October), to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, that he was giving “last warning” to the establishment, the Hindustan Times reported.

Governor Dhankhar said, “I want to tell the Chief Minister to follow the Constitution. I am here to protect it. They are playing with fire. They (bureaucrats and police) cannot be political workers and shall not be allowed to be political workers. Those who are sleeping like Kumbhakarna have no idea that there is something called destiny.”

There has been a spate of killing of BJP workers in the state and this warning has come after Governor Dhankhar had met with the brother of Madan Ghorai, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker who died on 13 October while in judicial custody of the State Police.

BJP has alleged that Ghorai died because of torture he had to endure when he was in the police custody.

Without mincing any words, Governor Dhankhar said, “Do not think that you can stop the governor by trolling him. This is the last warning. If rule of law is not established be ready to face the music.”

Immeadetely CM Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s spokesperson Saugata Roy said that Governor Dhankhar is ‘rude’ and was “crossing his limits.” He added, “If someone has died in custody, then the court and the administration is there to look into it and take steps.”

Home Minister Amit Shah has already said that the imposition of Presidential rule is justified in West Bengal with the deteriorating law and order situation and the constant targeting and killing of BJP supporters and workers in the state.

France to expel 231 radicalized foreigners after beheading of school teacher by Islamic terrorist

After the brutal beheading of Samuel Paty, a 47-year-old history teacher by an Islamist in France, 231 radicalised foreign nationals in a sweeping crackdown have been expelled, Reuters reported.

France Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin said that the government has plans to carry out the expulsion swiftly in response to the killing of Samuel Paty who had shown the cartoons of Mohammad that had been published in the French weekly, Charlie Hebdo.

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the act as an “Islamist terrorist attack” and had defended the right to blasphemy.

Earlier this month, President Macron had unveiled a plan to defend France’s secular values against Islamist radicalism, and had stated, “Islam is a religion that is in crisis all over the world today, we are not just seeing this in our country,”.

France defines extremists as “people who, engaged in a process of radicalisation, are likely to want to go abroad to join terrorist groups or take part in terrorist activities”.

After this brutal murder, 231 foreigners in the File of Alerts for the Prevention of Terrorist Attacks (FSPRT) will be deported. As per reports released by the French government, 180 people are currently in prison and 51 are expected to be arrested in the next few hours. Also, more than 850 illegal immigrants are registered to the FSPRT.

Macron has also announced that his government will be presenting a bill in December to strengthen a 1905 law that officially separated church and state.

This step will ensure that France as a nation will maintain its neutrality on religion. In a speech to the nation, Macron emphasised that “no concessions” would be made in a new drive to push religion out of education and the public sector in France.

Macron went on to say that France would seek to “liberate” Islam in France from foreign influences. This will be done by improving oversight of the financing of mosques and closer scrutiny of schools and associations exclusively serving religious communities, he stated.

In January 2015, the staff of Charlie Hebdo was massacred and the government described it as an act of “Islamist terrorism”. Right now 14 perpetrators, who are charged with various crimes including supplying weapons, membership of a terrorist organisation, and financing terrorism are on trial.

Farmers in Maharashtra bypass state APMC mandis, reap benefits from market

Following the passage of the three new Farm Acts passed by the centre, FPCs in Maharashtra are now increasingly bypassing APMC Mandis that once had control over the price. The farmers now are selling directly to private players and that has resulted in profits to the farmers, Financial Express has reported.

The Farm Bills that were passed by the Centre recently seems to have ended the monopoly of APMC and middlemen who had the power to dictate the price to the farmer for the produce. The protests staged by the opposition parties fizzled out owing to the grassroot level changes happening as many Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) are bypassing APMC Mandis to directly deal with private buyers in the open market.

“We decided to share some of the profit with the farmers who had sold their maize to us and distributed a bonus of Rs 10 per quintal to the farmers. The amount is small but is a gesture of appreciation”, the FPC’s founder Ashish Nafade has been quoted as saying.

The FPCs also have plans to brand their products and also tap into the international market and wants big corporate houses like ITC to sell their produce and are registering on online platforms for a wider market reach.
