Flood and landslides lash Nepal, kill 23

Heavy rains lashed Nepal since Thursday, triggering floods and landslides throughout the country. Nine people were killed and more than 30 were missing in Myagdi district, 200 km (125 miles) northwest of the capital Kathmandu, where several houses were destroyed on Friday.

Most of the landslides happened in Sarangkot and Hemjan areas of Pokhara in Nepal, 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu. In the neighbouring Kaski district, seven people were killed, while another seven were killed in Jajarkot district in the far west. Several people have been reported missing post these floods, as Narayani and other major rivers in Nepal have swollen due to the continuous downpour in the last 48 hours. Nepal Army has mobilised a helicopter to bring three injured persons in the incident to Kathmandu for treatment. “We are searching for eight people who are still missing,” said Kishore Shrestha, a senior police official.

Around 43 houses have been buried in landslides in the Myagdi district, while the total loss of physical property has not been estimated yet. A municipality official said over 400 affected people have been taking shelter at community building and school building in Takam, Marang, and Ghantiwang.

The country’s meteorological agency has forecasted four more days of continuous rainfall. Landslides and floods are common in Nepal due to the June-September monsoon every year.

BLM denies circulation of flyers calling white people their “enemies”

Amid the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States of America, a photo of a flyer that says that white people are their enemies and it is okay to direct hate to white families was widely circulated on social media platforms.

The Black Lives Matter organization denied sharing that flyer and said that the message of the flyer circulating in their name contradicts their beliefs.

Similar photos circulated on Facebook, Instagram, and on Twitter.

The group has also been the target of misinformation, including social media posts that seek to undermine its aims and values.

“BLM Global Network did not release any flyer with the ‘white enemy manifesto’ nor was it posted or shared on any of our social accounts,” Kailee Scales, managing director of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, said by email.

“We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities. We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people,” its website says.

Turkey’s Hagia Sophia to become a mosque again after almost a century

On Friday, Turkey’s highest court allowed for the conversion of the nearly 1,500-year-old Hagia Sophia from a museum into a mosque. This is a World Heritage Site, listed by the UNESCO, and was converted into a museum in the 1930s, by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Shortly after the court order, Hagia Sophia’s verified social media pages that had referred to the structure as a “museum” were taken down.

Hagia Sophia was originally a built as a cathedral church in Constantinople (today’s Istanbul) by the Byzantine empire but became a mosque in 1453 post the fall of the empire in a war against Sultan Mehmet II’s Ottoman forces.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared the mosque open for worshiping Friday, hours after a high court annulled a 1934 decision that had turned it into a museum.

This has been met with mixed responses worldwide, as many see this as the rise of an Islamic Turkey again. There has been a widespread backlash against this move by Turkey, including opposition from the UNESCO. There is also a possibility that it may lose its UNESCO Heritage tag due to this move. Throughout history, the monument has been claimed and debated over and over among religious sects, something which continues till this date. This also raised questions about the secular status of Turkey following this verdict.

Hagia Sophia isn’t the first to be converted from one religion to another. A mosque in Cordoba, Spain, was converted to a cathedral. It was built at the city’s heart, after the region’s conquest in the 13th Century.

Amazon says email about deleting TikTok was an error

Amazon had sent out an internal email to its employees telling them to delete the Chinese-owned TikTok app.

After a few hours, the company announced that it was a “mistake” and clarified that there is no change in policy regarding TikTok.

“The TikTok app is no longer permitted on mobile devices that access Amazon email,” the email read.

The employees had to delete the TikTok app to retain their mobile access to their company email.

It was clear that the email was related to the new National Security Law implemented by China and focused on geopolitical concerns as it cited the app’s “security risks.”

Amazon spokeswoman Jaci Anderson denied to answer any question about what caused the “mistake.”

TikTok said that they did not notify them before sending the email on Friday.

TikTok also said that they would welcome a discussion to address their issues with the app as they “didn’t understand Amazon’s concerns.”

A TikTok spokeswoman declined to comment further Friday evening.

Kerala gold smuggling case gets murkier: Swapna said to have been in touch with top Communist leaders, now blames media and threatens to commit suicide

Customs personnel on Sunday seized over 30 kgs of gold contained in a ‘diplomatic baggage’ that was meant for Consulate of the United Arab Emirates in the city, at the Thiruvananthapuram airport. Swapna Suresh, a former staff working as an operational manager at the UAE consulate in the city is alleged to be the kingpin of the crime syndicate behind this failed bid to smuggle gold.

On Thursday, an audio clip was released by TV channels in Kerala, wherein, Swapna Suresh, had threatened to commit suicide if the media did not stop indulging in ‘character assassination’, which she alleges has destroyed her ‘reputation’. In the audio clip, she also claimed that she is currently hiding as she fears for her life.

The voice clip said, “I have no role in the smuggling of gold through diplomatic baggage. A day after the baggage arrived, a diplomat in the consulate called me and inquired about the delay in its clearance. I then called Customs AC Ramamurthy and asked him about the delay. He told me that he would take up the matter. I used to work as the secretary to the consular. I have never spoken to anyone for my personal needs. I am no more an employee there. Still, I have helped them in their works until the last Sunday. One might wonder why I got involved in the matters of the consulate when I was a contract staff of Space Park. That is because of my love for the UAE where I was born and brought up.” She added that, “If any such thing happens to me, the media will be responsible for it”.

Swapna had been previously working as the liaison officer of Kerala government-owned Space park in Thiruvananthapuram and had recently been fired. She had been faking identity as a staff member of the UAE Consulate and had made over 10 calls to officials in the State Government. Swapna has also sought anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court using a fake identity. It is believed that her political connections had been aiding her in freeing people like actors who were involved in smuggling gold under the pretext of going to UAE for programmes. However, she has maintained that her contact with various political leaders was strictly professional.

It is important to note that Sarith, who along with Swapna is said to be spearheading the smuggling racket through the consulate has a brother named Sandeep. Sandeep is seen as the Benami of Swapna. His mother had told the media that he is a member of the CPI-M.

Sandeep had been working at a timber shop and had made quick money mysteriously enough to open an automobile garage, which was inaugrated by Kerala Assembly Speaker and also attended by Swapna. Sandeep had previously been arrested in 2014 for smuggling gold.

It is said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Office had contacted Customs officials to let Swapna off the hook when they had begun to zero in on her. Shortly afterward, the Principal Secretary was removed from the Chief Minister’s office. On Tuesday, M Sivasankar was removed as the principal secretary to Kerala Chief Minister, after the senior IAS official was found in the close network of the alleged key player of the smuggling racket.

This has sparked speculations about the involvement of Pinarayi Vijayan and other CPI-M leaders in the case, especially since the Principal Secretary M Sivasankar removal. Speaker of the Kerala Assembly P Sreeramakrishnan’s name has also been dragged into this episode.

However, CM Pinarayi Vijayan has denied these allegations and has said that he was prepared for any investigation in connection to this case. He had even written to the Centre asking for a probe by central agencies.

The case so far

A containment of gold, which was part of diplomatic cargo from the United Arab Emirates, reached Trivandrum International airport on Sunday (July 5). This cargo had been listed as bathroom fittings, packaged foods, and dates, which had been sent from Al Zatar Spices, a company based in Sharjah. Notably, the customs had already been tipped off about gold concealment. Upon getting tipped off by the Consulate about Sarith, Customs officials denied the release of the consignment and decided to examine it in the presence of the Consulate officials.  They uncovered 30 kilograms of gold in this consignment, following which Sarith was arrested.

Sarith Nair, who is under the Customs Department’s custody, has confessed that gold had been smuggled at least 15 times. On several occasions, the agencies have issued a lookout circular against the key players in the smuggling. He further added that celebrities had also been used for this purpose. But many suspects reach Kerala after crossing the India-Nepal border by road upon landing in Kathmandu airport.

It is suspected that this could have also been used to fund terror activities.

Further investigations in the coming days is expected to reveal more about the entire case.

Allow states to decide on semester examinations, CM Palaniswami writes to Centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday wrote to Minister of Human Resource and Development seeking for states to have a say in conducting semester exams.

In his letter he wrote that the Tamil Nadu government has been taking efforts to control the pandemic that has been borne good results. However, he mentioned that “any minor let up may pose a challenge to the state”.

Highlighting that Tamil Nadu has a far higher Gross Enrolment Ration in higher studies (49%), he said that it would constitute a large number of students.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier scheduled the exams in April 2020 which was cancelled considering the rise in COVID cases. The earlier circular issued by the University Grants Commission on 29th April, let the states decide on the matter. However, the new guidelines mandate universities and colleges across India to conduct the exams.

CM Palaniswami mentioned that many students are present outside the district, states and even out of the country. He also said that online examinations would not be feasible considering the digital accessibility of the students. He added that most of the Government Arts and Science College, Engineering Colleges, etc have been converted into COVID Care Centres for housing asymptomatic patients.

He said that if the state is not in a position to conduct examinations even after September 2020, it would jeopardise the future of students as many would have got placed on campus or applied for higher studies.

He therefore requested the Centre to let the states decide on assessment methods without compromising on quality and academic credibility.

Punjab Chief Minister has also written to the Centre regarding the same.
