Dear Suriya, please spare us your wokeness and hypocrisy

Even though actor Suriya never misses a chance for on-screen activism against caste identities, documents reveal that he officially uses his community name, Rakkia Gounder Sivakumar Suriya. This apparent hypocrisy raises questions about the integrity of actors who virtue signal publicly while maintaining practices they denounce in private.

Heroes Practice What They Preach

It is true that there is little or no connection between the reel and the real lives of actors in the film industry. M.N. Nambiar, who played negative roles and came across as a cruel villain on-screen, was a righteous man who upheld the highest standards of morals and ethics in his real life.

But today, some actors consider themselves heroes both on and off-screen, virtue signalling their wokeness by mouthing dialogues in front of a camera or whenever they get hold of a mike,  turn out to be hypocrites of the highest order. What they preach and do directly contradicts who they are and what they do in real life.

Suriya is one such fine actor in this league.

In his recent release “Soorarai Pottru”, a mischievous distortion of the story of Captain G.R. Gopinath, Suriya who is shown as an ‘anti-caste’ and a ‘socialist’ capitalist (God knows what that is!) utters the dialogue “I want to break the cost barrier and the damn caste barrier too!”.

There is nothing wrong with this dialogue per se. However, we need to call out Suriya for uttering this line.

Rakkia Gounder Sivakumar Suriya

Actor Suriya Sivakumar is not only an actor but is also a producer.  He runs two companies – one ‘2D Entertainment Private Limited’ and the other ‘Rakkia Cinemas Private Limited and is one of the directors of both the companies. The film “Soorarai Pottru” was produced under his ‘2D Entertainment’.

In both these companies, actor Suriya’s name is recorded in the documents as “Rakkia Gounder Sivakumar Suriya” while his brother Karthi Sivakumar who is one of the directors of Rakkia Cinemas does not have his community attached to his name.

Directors of 2D Entertainment Pvt Ltd
Directors of Rakkia Cinemas Pvt Ltd

So, Rakkia ‘Gounder’ Sivakumar Suriya is a producer of Soorarai Pottru in which actor Suriya flirts with ‘EVR-ism’.

Starting a production company and making movies through that company is a profession and is no crime. Having one’s community name as surname is also not a crime as no legal book prohibits one from doing so. But what is criminal, utterly dishonest and morally wrong is to mint money by claiming to ‘eradicate caste’ on screen while clandestinely having one’s caste name behind the scenes.

For someone who has of late been leaving no opportunity to radiate wokeness espousing ‘social justice’ and standing against ‘Manu NEEThi’, it would do himself good to walk the talk. Else, it is better if one doesn’t do the talk and just goes about his work.

Now it would be easy to brush it off saying ‘Rakkia Gounder’ is his grandfather’s name and not his. He could have simple mentioned ‘Rakkia’ while registering. Surya could have simply registered his name in the records of his company without mentioning the caste name. That way, it would be justified if he takes these politically correct positions against caste in public.

Instead, putting ‘Rakkia Gounder Sivakumar Suriya’ behind the screen while shouting ‘I want to break the caste barrier’ on the screen is a leaf taken out of EVR’s playbook.

This is not a writeup against Suriya. He is definitely a good actor with great acting skills that spills on to his real life. It is his choice to continue doing movies through his production house registered with his community name while flaunting his wokeness in audio launches and Agaram Foundation events. But what is important is for people to see through the hypocrisy and the double-standards of these stars who take fashionable positions while being morally bankrupt.

Pakistani workers upset over salary disparity with their Chinese counterparts, protests rock Karachi

Pakistan, which in the midst of nationwide protests against the French government now faces another protest against China for mistreatment of local Pakistani employees.

In Karachi, the financial capital of Pakistan, thousands of labourers on Wednesday (November 18) staged a protest against China, complaining about unequal wages compared to their Chinese compatriots.

According to a report published by The News International, Chinese staff recruited by the Punjab Mass Transit Authority for Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project received more salaries in comparison to their Pakistani employees.

This disparity in the income of the Pakistani staff has lowered the morale and to compound to the problem, there is a different grade system for the Chinese. Also, the Chinese staff are being paid in Yuan, and the Pakistani staff get their salaries in Pakistani rupees (PKR).

“On Wednesday, the value of 1 CNY against 1 PKR was equal to Rs 24.02. According to the data of the salaries of 93 Chinese working at the OLMT project, the Chinese staff is highly paid. If the salaries of Pakistani officials working on the same/equivalent seats are compared with those of Chinese staff, the Pakistan employees are getting mere peanuts. According to data, a Chinese-origin deputy chief executive officer/CFO/director with grade L2 is being paid 136,000 CNY per month which is equal to over Rs 36.26 lakh. There were three positions and all were filled with Chinese. No Pakistani was hired on this designation,” The News International stated.

The News International further gave data on salary disparity wherein 12 employees of Chinese origin working on the slot of train dispatcher/train crew are getting 57,000 CNY each, equal to Rs 10.36 lakh, however, Pakistans who are recruited for the same position are getting much lower salaries.

This unfair treatment has led to the Pakistani employees demanding a salary hike from the government and want the new salary structure at par with their Chinese counterparts.

Meanwhile, due the Wuhan virus, China has put a hold on projects under the $62 billion CPEC, a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Also, the ongoing sectarian and political unrest in Pakistan along with the crippling economic and foreign debt limits faced by Pakistan has forced China to slow down and delay investments in future projects in Pakistan.

Also, there is growing resentment in Pakistan as the fear of being trapped in a mountain of debt to China is growing every day.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning and Development on Tuesday may have cleared the CPEC Authority Bill 2020 with a majority, however, the opposition parties have strongly opposed the bill. Former minister for planning Ahsan Iqbal said, “Creation of CPEC authority is superfluous and unnecessary,” he said. “Ministry of planning has discharged the role diligently and effectively in the past.”

Many in Pakistan have come to realise that the national debt of USD 80 billion on account CPEC is a recipe for disaster and a danger to the sovereignty of Pakistan. Many in Pakistan have also noted how China has entrapped other under-developed countries with its unreasonable debt trap policies.

The opposition parties who are up in arms against the Imran Khan Niazi government have now realised that the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) under the facade of Pakistan-China friendship is using CPEC project to turn Pakistan into a ‘Chinese colony’ and is using every opportunity to push the debt burden on Pakistan.

TN: 405 govt school students who cracked NEET get medical seats through 7.5% quota this year

With the Tamil Nadu government implementing the 7.5% internal quota for undergraduate medical admissions, 405 students who had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and passed class 12 examinations from government/government aided schools have secured admissions in government and self-financed medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.

313 students have got admission in government and self-financed medical colleges and 92 have taken admission in government and self-financed dental colleges.

The first 18 students allotted seats under the quota for government schools were NEET repeaters. There were also many first time NEET attempters lucky of not having to repeat the exam, thanks to the internal quota brought from this year.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami handed over the admission orders, doctor’s coat and stethoscopes to the students at an event organized to felicitate those who have got admissions.

It turned out to be an emotional moment for everyone present with several students coming from the humblest of backgrounds realizing their dream of studying to become a doctor.

Archana, daughter of Sakthivel, who works as a daily wage labourer at Nagaiah Kottai in Dindigul broke down in tears on the stage and said “I am at a loss for words.. I was very worried about making my daughter a doctor as she was in government school. Thanks to the 7.5% quota she is now a doctor.. There is no doctor from my society.. I am thankful to the Chief Minister who like a God has made by daughter a doctor..” falling at the feet of the Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday (October 30) gave his assent to the Bill passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly that provides for 7.5% reservation for students passing class 12 from state government schools.

The Bill titled “Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Indian Medicine and Homeopathy on preferential basis to the students of Government Schools Bill 2020” was passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly on September 15.

The quota has come into force from the present academic year.

The move was taken following the submission of a report by the one man Commission under Justice P. Kalaiyarasan earlier in June 2020 that pointed out the socio-economic disparities between government and private school students.

After Shakib, Bangladesh cricketer Liton Das threatened by Islamist for posting Durga Pooja greetings on Facebook

In another case of blatant bigotry, Bangladesh national team cricketer Liton Kumar Das received several hate messages on his Facebook after he posted a photo of the Durga idol and sent greetings on the occasion of Puja, reports The Daily Star.

Just a few days ago, Bangladesh’s best all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was threatened by an Islamist for inaugurating a Kali Puja program in Kolkata. Shakib later had to issue an unconditional apology for hurting the sentiments of Muslims.

One Facebook user named, Mohammed Metun, attacked Liton for his religious beliefs, saying “I told you not to post such religious things”.

Another user asked him to remove the photo because Islam does not allow idolatry and Bangladesh is a majority Muslim country. However, there were several posts that are more abusive in nature.

Das, who was under a lot of pressure, later deleted the post and put up a new status on Facebook that read, “My first identity is that I am a Bangladeshi, and religion cannot divide us”,.

However, there were also posts from many of his fans supported Das for his post.

Nahin Hasan Shaoun said, “In any Hindu festival the number of Muslims is more than the number of Hindus. We all enjoy the occasions together, but some people are ruining it for the rest of us by making these derogatory comments”.

One person named John D Sana wrote, “Liton, majority of the people in Bangladesh is Muslim and praying to idols is forbidden in Islam. You have hurt the Muslims by posting a photo of Durga on your Facebook account. So think of yourself as a Bangladeshi and not as a Hindu”.

PM-SVANidhi Scheme: More than 25 lakh applications received, 12 lakh sanctioned loans

The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi) scheme, a special micro-credit scheme rolled out to support vendors whose business had suffered due to the pandemic, has seen more than 25 lakh applications out of which more than 12 lakh have been sanctioned loans 5.35 lakh loans disbursed, the press release by Press Information Bureau said.

In Uttar Pradesh, more than 6.5 lakh applications were received, out of which about 3.27 lakh have been sanctioned and 1.87 lakh loans have been disbursed. Stamp duties have been exempted for loan agreement of SVANidhi Yojana in UP.

Vendors who had left for their native places due to COVID-19 lock down are eligible for the loan on their return. The process to get the loans has also become hassle-free as one can upload the application online on their own at any common service centre or Municipal office or by going to a bank.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi appreciated the hard-work done by the bank staff, saying that “There was a time when street vendors did not go inside the bank but today the bank is going to their home.”

In order to ensure fast implementation of the scheme with transparency, accountability and consistency, a digital platform with web portal/ mobile app has been developed to administer the scheme with end-to-end solution. The IT platform integrates the web portal/ mobile app with UdyamiMitra portal of SIDBI for credit management and PAiSA portal of MoHUA to administer interest subsidy automatically. The scheme incentivises digital transactions i.e. receipts/ payments using digital means like UPI, QR-codes of payment aggregators, RuPay debit cards etc. by the street vendors through monthly cash back. Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary (MoHUA) had earlier tweeted that his ministry is working with all concerned stakeholders to make the process smooth & effortless to realise the objective of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat.

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, MoS, I/C, Housing and Urban Affairs while reviewing the implementation status and progress of PM SVANidhi Scheme had tweeted that this is a positive step towards the making of an AtmaNirbhar Bharat, where every Indian is a stakeholder in the nation’s progress and way forward.

They are leveraging the network of all stakeholders namely Street Vendor’s Associations, Business Correspondents (BCs)/ Agents of Banks/ Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and their federations, Digital Payment Aggregators like BHIM, PayTM, GooglePay, BharatPay, AmazonPay, PhonePe etc. in administering the scheme successfully.

COVID-19 pandemic lockdown has shown the resilience of local traders and with help from the government they can definitely bounce back to business and strengthen their livelihoods. Most of the street vendors who were given loan through the SVANidhi scheme have been repaying their loan on time. Urban Local Bodies have been playing a pivotal role in the roll out of the scheme.

US: Tibetan Buddhists should choose the next Dalai Lama, not China

In a statement that would upset China, the United States has made it very clear that the Tibetan Buddhists have the right to select the next Dalai Lama and that the Chinese Communist Party does not have any authority.

This is according to a US official dealing with international religious matters. “The United States is opposed to China picking the next Dalai Lama,” Samuel Brownback, the ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom said on Tuesday (November 17).

“They have no right to do that. They have no theological basis to do that.”, Brownback said about China trying to pick the next Dalai Lama.

The 85-year-old Dalai Lama is the 14th leader of Tibetan Buddhists and he fled Tibet in the 1950s after the Chinese takeover of the Tibet to India.

As per time-honoured tradition, the Dalai Lama is the one responsible to help the believers find the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. However, the Communist government of China wants the right to determine who becomes the leader of the Tibetan Buddhists.

“We think that’s completely wrong of the Chinese Communist Party to assert that they have that right,” Brownback told reporters during a telephone briefing.

“The Tibetan Buddhists have successfully picked their leader for hundreds of years, if not longer, and they have the right to do that now,” he added.

The prevailing fear is that, once the current Dalai Lama passes, it might be the end of a long tradition. That is why the Dalai Lama has said when he reaches around 90, he will consult other lamas, the Tibetan public and followers of the religion to decide “whether the institution of the Dalai Lama should continue or not”.

The Dalai Lama warned that “no recognition or acceptance should be given to a candidate chosen for political ends by anyone, including those in the People’s Republic of China”.

True Indology’s Twitter account suspended moments after IPS officer D Roopa says ‘your time is up’

True Indology, a social media account that shares information on Indian history has once again been suspended by Twitter arbitrarily following an argument with D Roopa IPS over the issue of historical references to bursting crackers for Deebavali.

On Wednesday, Twitter barred True Indology from posting tweets after suspending the account without giving any prior notice.

Karnataka police officer D Roopa had earlier tweeted that there was no mention of crackers in the Hindu scriptures to justify the ban of crackers. She had insisted that a ban on firecrackers should not be seen as anti-Hindu.

However, True Indology citing references from Ananda Ramayana and Skanda Purana had showed how bursting crackers on Deebavali is an integral part of Hindu festivities and culture. But D Roopa dismissed Ananda Ramayana as a credible source saying that it was written somewhere in the 15th century.

The argument soon deviated from an academic debate into a personal argument. D Roopa IPS went on to ask True Indology to reveal his/her identity. In another tweet, Roopa had written to TrueIndology, “Your time is up”.

Just moments after this tweet, Twitter suspended True Indology’s account once again without any notice.

True Indology later issued a statement in Facebook stating “it was saddening and exasperating to see that all the time and efforts put in to cultivate the account went down the drain because somebody took it upon her ego”.

“I thank everyone who has tweeted in my support. Thank you very much. Your support is much required and very much appreciated. While I am very sad about what happened to my account, I am thankful for and humbled by your support. The support that I have been receiving is completely voluntary and a testament to the fact that we as a society do not yet tolerate suppression of our voice. Let us remember that this is our collective battle. It could be anyone of you tomorrow.” True Indology wrote.

True Indology conveyed special thanks to actress Kangana Ranaut for extending her support.

“Thank you everybody. It is certainly a setback but my battle continues. I will do what I can to restore my account. I will also explore other venues and platforms. I am certainly not someone who is going to give up. It is our civilizational battle against pseudo secular institutions to achieve equality and I will fight on until I can. I am just a foot soldier in this battle but I am a very loyal soldier towards our civilization and shall fight to the end.”, True Indology wrote.

True Indology’s face off with Twitter

Earlier in October 2020, True Indology alleged that Twitter allowed fake accounts and impersonators to run freely on the original ID. It was also alleged that Twitter had resorted to shadow banning True Indology.

US keen on creating new numbered fleet in the Indian and Pacific ocean to counter China

As the navies of India, the US, Australia and Japan are engaging in the ongoing ‘Malabar’ exercise in the Arabian Sea to enhance operational readiness and interoperability, the US Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite has announced for the establishment of a new ‘numbered’ fleet close to the border of the Indian and Pacific oceans.

At present aircraft carriers USS Nimitz of the US Navy and the Indian Navy’s INS Vikramaditya are engaged in the Malabar exercise that has expanded to an exercise between the QUAD to counter China’s attempt to dominate.

Navy Secretary Braithwaite made the comments at the US Naval Submarine League’s annual symposium on Tuesday (November 17).

The US Navy has the worlds largest fleets of modern destroyers, aircraft carriers and a nuclear submarines with the capability to deploy anywhere in the world at a moments notice.

The US Navy currently has a total of seven fleets, deployed across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Mediterranean and Middle East regions.

These fleets designated by their numbers—for example, Fifth Fleet is headquartered in Bahrain and each fleet will have a combination of aircraft carriers, submarines and other surface ships as well as refuellers and logistical supply networks.

Kenneth Braithwaite was quoted by the US Naval Institute as saying, “We want to stand up a new numbered fleet. And we want to put that numbered fleet in the crossroads between the Indian and the Pacific oceans, and we’re really going to have an Indo-PACOM footprint. We can’t just rely on the Seventh Fleet in Japan. We have to look to our other allies and partners like Singapore, like India, and actually put a numbered fleet where it would be extremely relevant if, god forbid, we were to ever to get in any kind of a dust-up.”

Braithwaite emphasised the important roles of allies such as India and Singapore in the proposed plan that can be a much more formidable deterrence to China.

Braithwaite is scheduled to travel to India soon and the naval secretary said, “In the coming weeks he would be traveling to India to discuss both their security challenges and how the US Navy can uniquely help them, but also how India can help the US,.”

Braithwaite said it is not possible for the US alone to stand up to China and other nations around the Pacific and the Indian Ocean need to push back China both militarily and economically if they want deterrence to work.,” the US Naval Institute reported.

The need for a new numbered fleet in Indian and Pacific oceans is to reduce the strain on Seventh Fleet. A proposed First Fleet for the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean would allow more effective partnerships with regional partners such as India.

India already has signed the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), the renewed Defense Framework Agreement, and the Communications, Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) with the US.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on and President-Elect Joe Biden to congratulate him and both leaders reiterated firm commitment to the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed shared priorities and concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region.

However, Braithwaite who is a political appointee wants to push the idea of a new fleet for the Indian and Pacific oceans before his time at the Pentagon. In America, positions such as the Secretary of the Navy ends when new administration is sworn in in January. “Unfortunately, I don’t get a much longer stint in this seat… but I got 60 days to go out now and really grasp the bully pulpit,” Braithwaite was quoted as saying by Breaking Defense, a US publication.

During his interaction on Tuesday, Braithwaite highlighted the nature of the Chinese threat and said,”the Chinese have shown their aggressiveness around the globe… Chinese presence in the Arctic is unprecedented. Most recently, I was in a trip to the Far East: every single one of our allies and partners are concerned about how aggressive the Chinese have been. I would argue with anybody that not since the War of 1812 has the United States and our sovereignty been under the kind of pressures that we see today,” he was quoted as saying by the US Naval Institute.
