No, EVR was not conferred Socrates of ‘South-East’ Asia title by UNESCO: Maridhas exposes the truth behind the EVR’s UNESCO award and Periyar statues in TN

After exposing the links between News 18 Tamil Nadu, Karuppar Koottam, DK, and the DMK, Maridhas in his latest video sheds light on the blatant lie peddled by the DK and DMK about E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (known by his followers as Periyar). He highlights two issues that warrants everybody’s attention – the so called ‘UNESCO award’ and the Periyar statues placed opposite to temples in Tamil Nadu

The truth behind UNESCO award

For long, it has been said, written and ingrained in the minds of people that EVR was conferred with the title of “Socrates of South-East Asia” by the UNESCO. This had found its place even in school textbooks of Tamil Nadu and was even asked as a question in annual examinations and Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission exams.

However, this award has turned out to be a sham. An email response from the UNESCO office in Delhi has confirmed that no such award/title was given to E.V. Ramasamy Naicker.

Even in the award, there exists a conspicuous error. The title of the award says “Socrates of South-East Asia”. India does not fall under the South-East Asia grouping. The South-East nations include Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. India comes under South Asia and not South-East Asia.

For more than 40 years, this lie has been peddled with several articles and research papers on EVR written based on this lie. None in the media or those belonging to the ‘intellectual’ circle who speak of facts has ever opened their mouths about this blatant lie peddled.

Then who gave the award to EVR? It was none other than late former DMK leader M. Karunanidhi in the presence of Dravida Kazhagam President K. Veeramani.

EVR statues outside temples

On 24th January 1973, the then DMK government under M. Karunanidhi had constituted the “Periyar Statue Committee” through a G.O. (G.O.Ms. No. 162)

Through this, the DMK government had appropriated several small pieces of land from different corporations and municipalities and had given it to the Dravida Kazhagam party. The DK then built statues on these lands situated just opposite to Hindu temples using public money given to them by the government.

This Maridhas says is not out of Karunanidhi’s adoration for Periyar. A couple of years before that, Karunanidhi even took jibes and criticized EVR. The Periyar Statue Committee was constituted for political purposes.

In 1972, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran quit the DMK to form his own party – All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). As a response to this, Karunanidhi in order to show that the DMK was a party driven by Dravidian ideology unlike the AIADMK that was helmed by a cinema star, formed the Periyar Statue Committee to prove his Dravidian credentials.

Hence, Maridhas mentions that Periyar statues built across Tamil Nadu in several places was built for political purposes, using public money given to a political party and that too in front of Hindu temples.

The pedestal of EVR’s statues is inscribed with the words “There is no God. God does not exist. He who created God is a fool”. This however, cannot be found in front of a mosque or church for reasons best known.

Towards the end of the video Maridhas urges the public to take the initiative once again to reach out to the Tamil Nadu mainstream news channels regarding the “Socrates of South-East Asia” award and ask them about when they will hold a debate on the matter. Along with this, he also urges to file an RTI (Right to Information) with the Tamil Nadu government to obtain information on the total area allocated for building EVR statues, the number of statues built so far, how many of them were built outside temples, mosques and churches, and the total money allocated for this purpose. He equated it with the statues built by Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh during her government which was struck down by the Supreme Court.

German state bans burqas in public saying ‘they do not belong in a free society’

Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany announced the ban of burqas in public places on Tuesday, citing that ‘ full-face coverings do not belong in a free society ‘. This rule is to be applied to primary and secondary level schoolgirls. It is to be noted that this state had already banned the wearing of burqas for teachers.

The Daily Mail reported that State Premier Winfried Kretschmann said that it was rare for school girls to wear burqas but that a ban was required for the exceptional cases. Kretschmann added that such coverings, which are usually worn by conservative Muslim women and girls, do not belong in a free society, although he admitted that banning them at university level was a more complex matter.

The country’s left-wing Green party has been divided on the issue, but in Baden-Württemberg, Green party leaders were in agreement with the CDU, with state party leaders Sandra Detzer and Oliver Hildenbrand referring to the burqa and the niqab as ‘symbols of oppression.’  Other party members have argued that a ban could stoke tensions and negatively impact cultural integration.

In February, a German court overturned a school’s niqab ban after a 16-year-old girl was told she had to show her face to teachers. Hamburg education officials had ordered the girl’s mother to ensure that her daughter did not wear the veil at school, a decision which an administrative court overruled.

Graves of Ahmadis ravaged in Pakistan

Three graves that belonged to Ahmadis in Pakistan’s Punjab have been ravaged by the police, days after the its Prime Minister Imran Khan had warned strict action against those targeting the country’s minority communities.

Ahmadiyas have been considered as non Muslims and a constitutional amendment in 1974 was made to give state sanction.  Post this they have been considered a religious minority in Pakistan and even prevented from taking part in the conventional Hajj pilgrimage that Muslims go to every year in Saudi Arabia.

A spokesperson from the Jamaat Ahmadiyya Pakistan, the party that represents the rights of Ahmadis in the country said that the incident took place in Chak-2 TDA district in Khushab, in a graveyard 300 kilometres from Lahore. He condemned this action, saying that “Ahmadis were not safe even in the graves”. He also went on to post pictures of these desecrated graves on Twitter. He also reminded Prime Minister Khan of his recent warning that his government would take strict action against those involved in violence against the minorities. “I want to warn our people that anyone in Pakistan targeting our non-Muslim citizens or their places of worship will be dealt with strictly. Our minorities are equal citizens of this country,” Khan said in a tweet on Wednesday.

An official from the office of Deputy Commissioner Khushab told PTI that the tombs/plaques from the graves were removed on a complaint filed by the locals. Similarly, local clerics in Lahore had taken down a 100 year old place of worship of the Ahmadis.

New technology takes self-driving cars to the next level

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have chosen Waymo, a self-driving company to bring automobile technology to all its brands.

They have already started working on conceptualizing future products for the movement of people and goods operated by the Waymo Driver.

The “Wayne Driver” is a blend of hardware and software that is expected to perform even better than a human driver.

According to FCA, Waymo is its exclusive, strategic tech partner for Level 4 of fully self-driving technology.

This “Level 4” is defined as “high automation,” that can perform all driving functions, according to the Natural Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

However, a human driver will be able to control the functions as well.

Chief Executive Officer of Waymo, John Krafick said in a statement that FCA is their first major auto industry partner.

Mike Monkey, CEOP of FCA said that guidance of Waymo Driver has “safely and reliability” driven more fully autonomous miles than other vehicles.

He added that “ride-hailing, commercial delivery, and personal-use vehicles” will be new frontiers of many companies in the future.

The RAM ProMaster, a cargo vehicle will be the next FCA to get Waymo Driver and will be incorporated in their freight and delivery division.

Prime Minister lauds Kakrapar Power Plant, calls it a model for “Make-in-India”

The Kakrapar Power Plant in Gujarat has achieved its full criticality. This means that the power plant of capacity 400 Mega Watt can start functioning now, as reported by The Hindu.

Speaking about this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists and engineers, who were responsible for commissioning and bringing it to operation.

He also applauded it for making the ‘Make in India’ campaign’ a reality. His tweet read, “Congratulations to our nuclear scientists for achieving criticality of Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant-3. This indigenously designed 700 MWe KAPP-3 reactor is a shining example of Make in India”. He added that this is a “trailblazer for many such future achievements”

Kakrapar is a Pressurized Heavy Water  Reactor (PHWR) Power Plant, which belongs to one of the largest family of reactors with respect to power plants. Given India’s plans to add 175 GW of renewable energy from renewable sources such as wind and sun, the nuclear projects should help provide the baseload to balance the power grid.

India’s ambitious plans include constructing a dozen new nuclear power reactors totaling 9,000 MW. While nine reactors totaling 6,700 MW are under construction, the Centre has also given in-principal approval to set up nuclear power capacities totaling 25,248 MW across Jaitapur (Maharashtra), Kowada (Andhra Pradesh), Chhaya Mithi Virdi (Gujarat), Haripur (West Bengal) and Bhimpur (Madhya Pradesh), reported the Live Mint.

Raksha Mantri asks IAF to be ready for any eventuality along China border as talks turn flimsy

Amid the tense border situation in China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday (22 July) reviewed the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities and deployments at forward locations along the border with China.

He asked the IAF to stand ready to handle any eventuality on the border with China.

Singh addressed the inaugural session of the Air Force Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi that started on Wednesday.

The Minister state that the professional manner in which the IAF conducted the air strikes in Balakot as well as rapid deployment of IAF assets at forward locations in response to the prevailing situation in eastern Ladakh has sent a strong message to the nation’s adversaries.

Minister Rajnath Singh said that the nation’s resolve to defend its sovereignty stands firm on the faith its people have in the capability of its armed forces. He also appreciated the efforts taken by the IAF in supporting the nation’s response to the Covid-19 and for their role in extending the humanitarian assistance and relief.

Singh acknowledged the air force’s role in adapting to changes in technology and adopting emerging capabilities in nano technology, Artificial Intelligence, cyber and space domains.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria in his address stated that the IAF was well prepared to counter short term as well as strategic threats and the units were evenly poised to counter any aggressive action by the adversaries.

Earlier it was reported that Chinese forces still remain in the Finger 5 area of the Pangong Tso lake. Though there has been some ‘thinning’, sources from the government reportedly said.

“Next few days will be crucial”, government sources said.

Hyderabad youngsters offer care for abandoned pets of COVID patients

A group of youngsters in Hyderabad has been offering care to the pets of COVID victims. This initiative, called the Scoobies Pet Service, has been caring for the pets whose owners have been affected by the coronavirus infection.

Panneeru Teja, who runs this service in Hyderabad, had told InUth that the patients are already under a lot of stress after contracting the infection, and do not know how to properly care for their pets or where to place them if they are forced to be quarantined in hospitals or in isolation facilities. Upon observing their plight, he had come forward to offer them respite.

Teja says that, in some cases, several people had even abandoned their pets fearing that they could possibly contract this infection from them. He adds that pets are not carriers of this novel coronavirus, and they harbour nothing but love for their owner, and so, they should not be abandoned because of misinformation.

Teja had already been running a pet boarding service with three others in Hyderabad for the past 4 years. The pets are picked up by Teja and his team, who give the pets a medicated bath and feed them according to their requirements. They charge according to the distance from the shelter to the pet’s location. Although this was started off as an initiative primarily catering to dogs, Teja has now accepted requests from COVID patients who have cats as well.

Chandrayaan-2 completes one year in orbit, data collected by it to be released in October

The Indian Space research organisation ISRO said on Tuesday that they will release the data collected by Chandrayaan-2, India’s second Mission to the Moon in October. Chandrayaan 2 completed one year in the moon’s orbit on Tuesday (21st July), reported Swarajya.

This mission was helmed by ISRO’s Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) satellite, which was nicknamed Baahubali, because of the fact that the the rocket carried the 3.8-tonne Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft. This was launched in July 2019 from ISRO’s launch pad at Sriharikota.

Ever since its launch, Chandrayaan 2 had been extensively collecting data of the moon, which have been recorded by the payload scientists at ISRO. The parameters of the data garnered are being derived by ISRO for the presence of water-ice in the polar regions, X-ray based and infrared spectroscopic mineral information, and mid and high-latitude presence of Argon-40 gas which is a condensable gas released internally by the moon due to radioactive decay.

The report on major findings from Chandrayaan-2 experiments was planned to be released at the Annual Lunar Planetary Science Conference in March 2020, however, it has been cancelled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Business Standard reported that Public release of science data from Chandrayaan-2 for global use will begin in October 2020, wherein details for accessing the data will be provided, said ISRO.

Era of non-alignment has gone: Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s new book will provide insight into ‘The India Way’ of doing things

Be Ready To Hear Our Viewpoint On Your Country, EAM Jaishankar Warns Foreign Diplomats Interfering In Indian politics

The era of Non-Alignment which was India’s staple foreign policy since the 1950s belongs to a bygone-era says Minister for External Affair Minster S. Jaishankar as India and the United States conduct the joint naval exercise in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The External Affairs Minister is also set to release his new book titled “The India Way: Strategies For An Uncertain World”.

Responding to a question of India moving away from its non-alignment principle, Deccan Chronicle quoted Minister Jaishankar saying, “Non-alignment was a term of a particular era and geopolitical landscape,” Jaishankar said during a discussion on a TV channel. “The era of great caution, the era of greater dependence on multilateralism…that era is to a certain extent behind us,”.

Jaishankar’s comment could not have come in a crucial time when India is standing up to a China which is constantly trying to bully practically every country it shares a border with.

As the Indian Foreign Minister said, non-alignment is now a policy of a bygone era, Indian Navy’s warships INS Rana, INS Sahyadri, INS Shivalik, and INS Kamorta are involved in an intense naval exercise with the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in the Indian Ocean off Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Apart from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz, guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton and missile destroyers USS Sterett and USS Ralph Johnson joined the Indian Navy.

The purpose was to improve interoperability between two of the worlds most advanced navies. Both the countries are conducting high-end exercises designed to maximize training and this also includes air defence elements.

It has been reported that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has also sent there Jaguar fighter jets to Andaman and Nicobar Island which is very close to the critical and one of the busiest shipping lane, the Strait of Malacca.

The Jaguar fighters stationed in the Car Nicobar are the maritime strike variant of Jaguar, called Jaguar IM and the operational range is within the Malacca Strait.

The Malacca Strait is a narrow stretch of water between the Malaya Peninsula in the north and the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the south. It is the most crucial shipping lane in the Indian ocean and any blockade could have serious ramification for China.

Malacca Strait is the only shipping channel connecting the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea, It is estimated some 40 per cent trade, including much of China’s imports and exports, passes through the Malacca Strait.

In 2018, the Indian Air Force (IAF) fighters such as Su-30 MKIs and Jaguars with help from the Navy’s Poseidon-8i maritime reconnaissance aircraft conducted Exercise Gaganshakti 2018. This exercise was intended to extend our dominance over the Bay of Bengal region extending up to the Malacca Straits.

But this time the joint drill and the policy shift comments by the EAM has come at a time when China’s aggression in the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has become a regular event.

Such aggressive posters on the border and the constant threat from Pakistan has led to a review of our policy of maintaining strategic ambiguity and develop greater India-US strategic cooperation to counter expansionist aspirations of President Xi Jinping.

The ambush by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had led to the death of 20 Indian army soldiers. The subsequent retaliation by our army also led to an unspecified number of deaths to the PLA, but the two-month-long stand-off along the disputed boundary between the two nations has far from eased.

The Chinese have withdrawn its troops but the complete disengagement process is far from over.

That is the EAM had this to say, “If we are to grow by leveraging the international situation, then we have to exploit the opportunities out there. You cannot do that by saying ‘I’m going to stay away from it all and when I find it useful, I’ll step out.’ Either you are in the game or you are not in the game,”

However, Jaishakar also clarified that India was never a part of any alliance and would never be.

The joint exercise by India and the US is nothing but a clear message to China that it simply cannot flex its newfound economic, political and military muscle to force other countries to agree to its inequitable terms.

The ongoing exercise close to Malacca Strait is to show China that there are countries who can block the important sea lane, vital for the communist country, and could easily choke the movement of its ships.

The US had already stated that it rejects most of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea as “completely unlawful” and the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had also said that, the US will never allow China turn the South China Sea as its “maritime empire”.

Pompeo on July 21  came down heavily on China by saying that China cannot threaten countries and bully them in the Himalayas.

In a show of strength two of the largest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the USS Nimitz and the USS Ronald Reagan were deployed in the South China Sea earlier this month and conducted several tactical exercises to maximize air defence capabilities.

The US last week rejected most of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea as “completely unlawful”. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced Beijing’s bid to turn the South China Sea as its “maritime empire”.

It is ironic how far the India-US relationship has come when it comes to strategic cooperation. In 1971, the US, under the Nixon administration had sent its 7th Fleet to the Bay of Bengal, to intimidate India when India was fighting Pakistan in the Eastern and in the Western borders. The relationship has now taken a complete new turn and to greater heights.
