India’s garment manufacturing hub Tirupur could look at a 15% growth for Oct-Dec quarter

There is very good news for India’s garment export hub, Tirupur, as garment exporters are looking at a potential 15 per cent growth for the October-December quarter.

The garment manufactures are expecting international sales for the current fiscal to surpass the previous financial year’s total of ₹25,000 crore.

Also, anti-China sentiment amongst the buyers has will play an important role in a strong revival of demand, reports Times of India.

Favourable INR/Euro ratio is also aiding the traders because the European Union is one of the largest importers of garments from Tirupur. To compound to China’s problem, American embargo on exports from China and knitwear made from Chinese cotton is also proving advantageous for Indian traders and exporters.

Tirupur which is located in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu employs around 6 lakh workers, which includes around 3 lakh individuals who belong to other states. A Sakhtivel, head of Apparel Exports Promotion Council remarked, “Exports are back, with a bang. The growth that we are seeing is here to stay.”

Raja Shanmugham, head of Tirupur Exports Association, said, “exports will enhance 15 per cent by volume and 10 per cent by value in the ongoing quarter but we must remain cautious of the ongoing trends given that certain European nations are witnessing further waves of Covid-19 infections that might impact the Christmas sales.”

Given that 40 per cent of Tirupur’s goods are usually circulated to the local markets, he claimed, “Domestic demand is matching exports. We expect domestic supplies to overtake exports if the present demand continues.”

BJP Telangana President gives 24 hrs ultimatum to CM to take steps to protect temple lands

Fresh after tasting electoral victory in the recently concluded Municipal Corporations Election in Telangana, BJP’s Telangana unit President Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Wednesday (16 December) told Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to take steps for the protection of temple lands in the old city part of Hyderabad within the next 24 hours.

The BJP Telangana President has set a 24-hour ‘deadline’ for the protection of temple lands which has been encroached in the old city and warned that if the CM failed to respond, he would launch a movement in the old city.

Bandi Sanjay Kumar has demanded the lands be recovered and handed them over to the endowment departments. He also alleged that the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) encroached endowment lands in the Chandrayangutta constituency and used the name of a Hindu to make fake documents and mislead the court.

The BJP leader who won the Lok Sabha election in 2019 from Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency also claimed that the police officials colluded with MIM leaders and that the government lands are being encroached under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Another BJP MLA Raja Singh has alleged that MIM was trying to encroach the Kalimata temple and has claimed that BJP workers resisted three attempts to grab the land. During such attempts of encroachments, the police beat up party workers, including women, he said.

“Where is Moolapathiram?”: DMK party sympathizers try to tarnish Superstar Rajini’s image, get embarrassed in return

On December 16, DMK sympathizers on Twitter started a tirade against Superstar Rajinikanth saying that the actor-politician had not paid the rental dues to the owner of the land on which The Ashram School run by his wife Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth is located.

It came in the light of media reports about the Madras High Court stating that Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth could face contempt proceedings if the education society in which she is the secretary, fails to vacate the premises by April 2021.

The Ashram School run by Sree Raghavendra Educational Society is located in Guindy, Chennai. In 2014, the land owners –  Venkateswaralu and Poornachandra Rao filed a case in the Madras High Court seeking an order to pay rent arrears till March 2013. On August 16, 2017, the school gate were closed suddenly as the issue saw no closure. Students studying in the school were shifted to another branch of the school. However, the school was following a High Court order in 2017.

On August 3, 2018, the school management and the land owners had reached an amicable settlement and it was decided that they would vacate the premises by April 3, 2020.

However, the premises could not be vacated as planned due to the outbreak of Wuhan virus and the ensuing nationwide lockdown which has resulted in non-completion of the current academic year. An affidavit was filed before the High Court citing the above reasons and seeking extension of time to vacate the premises to April 2021. In response to this, the High Court had stated that Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth could face contempt proceedings if the educaation society failed to vacate the premises before April next year.

On December 16, Sree Raghavendra Educational Society issued a press release clarifying on the matter and denied reports of contempt proceedings against its secretary Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth.

“This is to clarify that we had filed an application along with the affidavit before the Hon’ble High Court seeking to extend the time to vacate the premises as we were not able to vacate the premises in view of the outbreak of Covid-19 and further as the current academic year was not completed. In addition to the above and also keeping the interest of teachers, students and non-teaching staff, time was sought to vacate the school premises till April 2021 and we also informed the Hon’ble High Court that there were no arrears of Rent and TDS, and the same was being periodically paid,”, the press release read.

The statement said that the court accepted the submissions made by Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth’s side and granted time till April 2021. It also said that the Court had restrained the institution from admitting students for the next academic year only for the current premises and did not put any restrictions for its new campus.

However, stories carried by newspapers like The Hindu (reported by Senior Assistant Editor Mohamed Imranullah) and a section of Tamil news channels and social media put out misleading headlines which became a fodder for the DMK sympathizers.

ImageThe hashtag #வாடகைஎங்கேரஜினி (Where is the rent Rajini?) started gaining traction on Twitter. But with the clarification coming from Mrs. Latha Rajinikanth’s side, the tirade went bust.

But the matter did not end there. Netizens and Rajini supporters raked up the issue of DMK’s mouthpiece Murasoli Trust office allegedly squatting on a Panchami land (land which was distributed for Scheduled Caste communities in Tamil Nadu during the British rule in 1892).

The hashtag #வாடகைஇங்கே_மூலபத்திரம்எங்கே is now trending nationwide with more than a 100K tweets.

DMK President MK Stalin who is the managing director of Murasoli Trust found himself in soup after PMK founder leader Dr. Ramadoss questioned if the office of the DMK mouthpiece is illegally squatting on Panchami land when the former commented after watching the Tamil film Asuran. Since then, many from different quarters have asked the DMK chief to come out clean on the matter by showing the Moolapathiram (mother document) that establishes that the office does not squat on Panchami land.

Massive turtle hatching observed in Brazil

A recent video released by the Wildlife Conservation Society showed several thousand Giant South American River turtle hatchlings emerging from a beach in the protected area around the Amazon River in Brazil. The video of this phenomenon became viral and was widely spoken about since this was a never before seen sight. Close to 71000 turtle hatchlings animals in a single day. This was followed by another 21000 a few days later.

Researchers from the Reserva Biológica do Abufari had been monitoring this hatching of turtle eggs in the reserved and protected region of this riverbank. They had been studying the conditions to help conserve and protect this endangered species, that had been subject to a lot of poaching.

Camila Ferrara, Aquatic Turtle Specialist for WCS’s Brazil said, “For the giant South America river turtle, birth is an explosion of life, but also it is the most fragile phase. In some areas, hatchlings use mass birth to increase their survival. The synchronization of birth allows them to travel together to the river to start a new journey.”

The conservation work is part of a project led by WCS Brazil in partnership with ICMBIO and is sponsored by Fundação o Boticário. The Giant South American river turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in Latin America, reaching lengths of three and a half feet (1.07 meters) and weights of 200 pounds (90 kg). The turtles play an important ecological role by dispersing seeds that eventually help regenerate vegetation along river corridors.

18-year-old teen entrepreneur from Bengaluru invents detection mechanism for early signs of oral cancer

18-year-old Nikhiya Shamsher has become one of the youngest entrepreneurs in the world to have made a landmark achievement in the field of Cancer detection. She has invented a device decorate in the early detection of oral cancer.

“As it turns out, one of the biggest reasons for this [high mortality rate] is the late diagnosis,” the now-18-year-old who graduated from Greenwood High International School, Bengaluru was quoted saying in the Forbes India. Due to the late diagnosis, people not only go through a lot of physical stress but also a lot of emotional and financial stress.

When she was 14 years old, Nikhiya’s visit to a hospital’s pediatric ward as a part of a project called ‘Compassionate Clowns’ brought into light the high mortality rate that oral cancer had in India. This led her to start researching a potential cure or a detection mechanism.

The result of her research from when she was in class 9 gave birth to Quitpuff, a point of care diagnostic device that could help in the early detection of oral precancer and cancer. This device is a bottle with a reagent in it. The patient is expected to spit in it, and when it is heated, the biomarker changes colour in 15 minutes which can then be compared using a colour chart. It costs just ₹38 and is a cost-effective solution.

“It is a simple principle, it detects a biomarker present in the saliva, and changes colour. The more the biomarker, the darker the colour will be, which means the higher the risk of developing oral cancer,” she explains.

However, Quitpuff does not currently have the capability to detect cancer. It merely tells you whether or not you have the possibility of getting affected by oral cancer.
