Delhi Police recover incriminating material from IS operative Abu Yusuf arrested in Delhi

The Delhi Police on Sunday (August 23) recovered incriminating materials from the residence of Abu Yusuf in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh who was arrested near Dhaula Kuan area in Delhi yesterday. 2 explosive IED 1 pistol recovered when he was arrested. National Security Guards were called to the spot immediately to comb the area.

On Sunday, the police followed up on the case and recovered huge amounts of explosives including explosive jackets (supposedly for fidayeen attacks).

2 explosive jackets, 1 explosive belt, around 9-kg of raw explosives, ball bearings, 7 cylindrical boxes, timer, 4 batteries, ISIS flag & board on which Islamic State operative Abu Yusuf used to practice shooting were recovered from his village, Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Pramod Kushwaha was quoted saying to the ANI.

The Deputy DCP said that Abu Yusuf was planning to plant the two recovered IEDs in a high footfall area of Delhi and added that he was to receive instructions from his handler to carry out a fidayeen attack.

Back at his home, Abu Yusuf’s father Kafeel Ahmad said that he regretted that his son was involved in such activities. He said that his son could be forgiven if possible for once but added that his son’s act was wrong. “Had I known about his activities I would have asked him to leave us”, Kafeel Ahmad said.

His wife told that Abu Yusuf had stored gunpowder & other materials at their home. When she tried to stop him, he had asked her to not interfere in the matter. “I wish he could be forgiven. I have four kids. Where will I go?”, his wife said.

Done with the ‘Madras Day’ rhapsodies? Here is what you should know about it

Over the last few years or so, there is a sudden buzz and craze for celebrating another new modern “day” called the “Madras day”. “Happy Birthday Madras” “I am a proud Madrasi” “Namma Madras” etc are the slogans screamed by the Madrasis/Chennaities on this day all over the city and in social media. It is celebrated on every 22nd of August to mark the so called birth of the city of Madras, now called Chennai. To put it better, Madras Day marks the day, the agents of British East India Company bought a small piece of land to build Fort St George. Detailing further, it commemorates the founding of the modern city by establishing Fort St George on a small piece of land acquired from the last King of Chandragiri in 1639 by the British East India Company. On this very day in 1639, Mr. Francis Day of the British East India Company bought a small strip of land between the river Cooum almost at the point it enters the sea and another river known as the Egmore river on the Coromandel Coast from Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, a Nayak (local chieftain) under the Vijayanagara King, Peda Venkata Raya in Chandragiri. A year later, the Fort St. George was built to house the British merchants, factory workers, and other colonial settlers. (It is known that all this can be sourced online). Later at various points of time, many surrounding villages were added to this piece of property militarily, commercially, poltically and administratively which eventually gave way to the current form of the city.

However what is not known is the sham that is being done in the name of promoting a city’s history and the criminal design to alter the course of the city’s history. Historically Chennai or Madras has been a part of the Tondaimandalam ruled by the dynasties of Cholas, Pallavas, Pandyas and Satavanhas. Later it came under the control of the Vijayanagar empire. When many temples in the city are more than 1000 years old if not older, what sense does it make to celebrate something exclusively as ‘Madras Day’ on 22nd August 1639, a day when a bunch of foreigners bought our land? Even more – when there were lands, animals and humans and what not before 22nd August 1639 in the very same area which was handed over to British merchants, how can a city be born only on that date? The villages of Madrasapattnam and or Chennapattanam were already existing and flourishing. Obviously cities aren’t dropped by “God” from heaven on a particular day.

If that is comical, let’s see what is then worrying. If at all anyone had to celebrate Madras day, it should have been the British who bought this piece of land on that day. They could have celebrated it every 22nd August till 1946 for buying a piece of land and from there building a city and then colonizing it and then ruling it as a Presidency. But it looks like they had better common sense than our present day folks who cling on to any damn day as long as it has a western perspective and a western interest in it. They never celebrated it. We do have customs and festivals for celebrations and remembrance. We have anniversaries. Rarely do we celebrate anniversaries every year for buying a plot or a house. However it will make some sense even if we do so. And the day we will do it will be either the day of signing the agreement or the day of Grihapravesam. So, the buyer of the plot of house will be the one who will be celebrating it and not the seller. And in turn after few years, if the buyer again sells it to the person from whom he bought the property, the original owner who is again the new owner can and will too celebrate the purchase. But he will not celebrate it on the date he sold the property to the other person. He will actually celebrate it on the date when he bought it back from that person. Now, replace Indians with the original owner and the Britishers with the buyer. We Indians/Madrasis are celebrating the day when we actually sold a piece of land to the British merchants for their commercial purposes. Wow!

Now the more shameful part in this is, Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka sold this piece of land innocently to the British merchants thinking that they were here only for doing trade and commerce. Little did he know they will one day become rulers of this vast country through criminal and inhuman methods. And what do we do to honour such great acts of back stabbing and cunning designs? We go ahead and celebrate the very day when the first step was taken to make us slaves. How proud we are of ourselves! Bravo! How will it be if all the Indians celebrate the day when the first British or European set his foot in this country rather than the Independence Day? Or how will it be if Indians celebrate the day when Robert Clive won the different wars he fought and then enslaved us? Or how will it be if we celebrate the day when Queen Victoria proclaimed herself as the Empress of India in 1857 rather than the Republic Day of India? Why should we simply celebrate the day when one of our ancestors trusting the British sold a piece of land and also offered all kinds of assistance to them for their trade becoming well established? If at all we should do something on this day, it should be marked as the day for learning our lessons from our history where we were cheated and ill treated and then enslaved so that we don’t repeat that mistake again. In essence, it is not a day of celebration.

Now let’s come to the criminal part of it. Most of us know that the day of primary celebration of an entire village, town or city in our country will be the day when the temple in that village/town/city has its biggest annual festival as per its calendar. Many localities in Chennai like Mylapore, Tiruvellikaenni, Thiruvanmaiyur, Thiruvottiuyr, etc celebrate in a similar fashion. And same is the case in almost all the other cities, towns and villages across India. But the promoters of this sham called Madras Day want to erase this kind of a Hindu or Indian pride and custom associated with the city and want to bring in a British legacy into the minds of the Madrasis. The celebration of this very day is to give credit to the birth of the “modern” city to the British and thereby making the Madrasis being ever grateful and thankful to their colonial masters. It is only one another way of colonizing Indians through the minds than politically or administratively. Even for argument sake, if we agree that the promoters of this sham did not or do not have this intention, then they have got the date and reason behind the Madras Day celebration woefully, awfully and completely wrong. But knowing who the promoters are of this sham, it is pertinent to raise these objections. It is a sinister design to make the Madrasis come out of their native and indigenous pride and be ever enslaved to the glory of their past colonial masters. Of course in the initial stages or periods, the impact of this will not be seen. But one has to wait and watch to see the success of this long term plan in front of our eyes. We not allowing that to happen is another issue altogether.

There are various attempts, through various quarters and in various forms to enslave Indians mentally to their past colonial masters and other western powers. One such attempt is this Madras Day sham through which the entire credit for building of the city is given to the British. And thereby it makes Indians feel that all that has been constructive in this country has been due to the British. We have seen many examples where people keep thanking the British for the Railways, Post & Telegraph, Roads, Bureaucracy, Millitary forces, etc as though they had done this with a charitable motive for the well being of the Indians. Similarly they built the Fort St George not for handing it over later to Indians, but for themselves to initially protect themselves from the likes of French and Dutch who were rival imperialistic powers in the vicinity of Madras. Later they used the very same building to politically and administratively enslave millions of Tamilians, Telugus, Malayalees and Kannadigas who all formed the citizens of the famed Madras Presidency.

At a time when there is a rising pride among the Hindus and Indians about their religious and cultural practices, the forces who are unable to digest this fact are making attempts through these designs to make us lose our pride and glory once again. The celebration of an entire village or town or city or a state or even our country has been only through religious festivals and temple festivals. Kolkotta/Bengal and Durga Pooja are inseparable. Mumbai/Maharashtra and Ganesh festival are inseparable. Gujarat and Navratri are inseparable. Mysore/Karnataka and Dushera are inseparable. Tamil Nadu and Pongal are inseparable. Kerala and Onam are inseparable. Orissa/Puri and the Jagannath Yatra are inseparable. Baisakhi and Punjab are inseparable. Delhi and Ram Leela are inseparable. Allahabad and Kubh Mela are inseparable. Mathura and Janmashtami are inseparable. India and Holi are inseparable. India and Diwali are inseparable. Similarly cities and towns like Madurai, Trichy, Thiruchendur, Palani, Tiruvanmalai, Chidambaram, etc all have such inseparable celebrations with their respective primary temples. The entire city, town and village will erupt in joy, pomp and fanfare on such temple festival occasions. The entire city/town or village will be on the streets and celebrate the annual Rath Yatra (temple car festival). In Chennai/Madras similarly each locality has its own identity with a particular temple festival. Even streets have their festivals tied to the local Goddess Ammans and Karuppu Saamis during different times of the year. It is to erase such celebrations and identities, that this one of its kind experiment is being tested. To allow it be successful will be another blot in the history.

Not even planned cities in India like New Delhi, Chandigarh have a particular day of birth to celebrate when actually it should be sensible of them to do so. And nowhere else in the world do we hear of days like New York Day, London Day, Paris Day, Tokyo Day, Sydney Day, etc. Exceptions may always be there. But certainly not for reasons like that we have in our hands.

The promoters of this day are primarily from the venomous English daily situated on Mount Road and their other royal, elitists and intellectual friends. That alone should speak volumes of the noble intentions behind this “Madras Day”.

Factors of production and land titling polices, the need for reform

To achieve a higher trajectory of economic growth encompassing a comprehensive economic development of a nation requires clearly defined and sound principled public policies on factors of production. The rules of framework permeate the factors of production in the interest of the nation irrespective of any political systems. The fundamental rules of operation would inevitably help us to make use of vital resources effectively such as land, labour, capital, entrepreneurial skills.

Among the key factors of production, the labour and capital have more power of portability as compared to the land which is fixed in nature but it has intrinsic value on its locations. Further, few more precious values of factors of production were added in the modern world, the science of management practices, entrepreneurship skills, innovation, and effective use of precise time as a factor with decision making and risk-taking ability are all important besides the use of modern technologies.

However, the key challenges remain on the terms of use, and misuse of these vital resources.

How do nations make factors of production more efficient? Since independence, the public policies were framed in such a way that challenges posed by the factors of production were not given equal traction to make use of it efficiently and effectively. For instance, for decades, increases in population and human resources were treated as burdensome at worst rather than focal resources for economic development by providing education and skills development.

Moreover, soon after independence, the fundamental right of private property rights was removed quite hastily without even contemplating the importance of it for the economic development of the country in the future. The founders of modern India including Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, and Rajaji had premised the property rights as paramount to achieve economic development and upliftment of the poor.

Similarly, land titling is an enormous systemic issue lingering for decades without amplified governance systems to fix and make effective use of it for nations’ prosperity.  Moreover, the policy of land titling would provide an antidote to most of the urban issues but most government department works in silos. Studies suggest that land-related disputes account for two-thirds of all pending court cases in the country (more than three crores). These land disputes include those related to land titles and records, and rightful ownership (Prachee Mishra, Roopal Suhag, September 10, 2018).

It is interesting to note that in his address to the nation on August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not say anything about the ambitious vision of making India a 5 trillion dollar economy by the year 2024 which was widely discussed until the COVID-19 hit. But, it is understandable that the eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the economy and dramatically shifted the priorities of the union government to focus on medium-term goals.

Nonetheless, the ramifications of various past and present policies shows that the aggregation of inefficacious factors of production as a systemic factor would be a major challenge posed to the Indian economy apart from the COVID-19 pandemic that would hinder India from achieving its 5 trillion dollar economy vision. One of the major hurdles impinges time and again on the top of the policymaking is that India is still yet to dare dream moving away from the current shackles of land titling systems.

India’s manufacturing sector has been stagnated for decades at least since the embarking of major economic reforms in 1991. This is purely due to lack of policy coherence in areas of land, labour, and capital deployment. During the last three decades, India’s total factor productivity (TFP) growth has been more cyclical in nature with few years’ exceptions preceding 2008 (V. Anantha Nageswaran, March 26, 2019, Livemint).

For a self-reliant India, there needs to be a sound land titling policy put in place. It’s time to take advantage of technologies to foster the blending of sound public policies with equal weight on factors of production.

Another part of the systemic challenge is huge corruption over poor land tilting policies which effectively prevents economic transactions for development and growth. It is especially too complicated in urban areas and cities which restrains every major project for improving facilities and services for the benefits of the entire population.

There are several research studies at national, state, and district levels which show that the poor land titling policy impacts negatively on the country’s economic growth quite significantly. Prime Minister Modi spoke about silos prevailing in the government systems and governance structures. The net losers would be the youth who will be deprived of access to opportunities especially the employment in private sector enterprises.

The real antidote lies not on merely better governance systems through government alone but the most effective use of technology and communication systems. The land digitization process is underway since 2008, although in a slow space. Under Constitution, the subject of land is in the State list but States are not proactive to enact a comprehensive law to make an appropriate framework to govern on land tilting systems. Hence, there is a dire need for the Union Government to bring model legislation for a comprehensive titling system that can unleash the potential of Indian economy and help us increase the pace of realizing an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Yes to glorification of Shaheenbagh, No to other side of the story: Bloomsbury India chickens out from publishing book on Delhi Riots

Bloomsbury India chickened out from publishing the book, Delhi Riots 2020: The Untold Story by Advocate Monica Arora, Sonali Chitalkar and Prerna Malhotra, after liberal cabals came down on it for giving space to the other side of the anti-Hindu Shaheenbagh protests that culminated in the Delhi Riots.

This book is based on the CAA-NRC riots that had happened in February 2020, which caused quite a stir nationwide.

A book authored by Monika Arora, Sonali Chitalkar and Prerna Malhotra was to be released in a virtual launch with Rajya Sabha MP Bhupendra Yadav launching the book and BJP leader Kapil Mishra, film director Vivek Agnihotri, OpIndia editor Nupur J Sharma attending the event as guest speakers.

However, a well-organized lobby comprising of the self-proclaimed champions of freedom of expression and those claiming to fight against a ‘fascist state’ descended down on Bloomsbury India to withdraw from publishing the book.

Congress supporter and Rahul Gandhi’s henchman Saket Gokhale, rabid Islamist Rana Ayyub, and problematic individuals like Vidya Krishnan, Swara Bhaskar, Meena Kandasamy, Aatish Taseer etc exerted pressure on Bloomsbury India.

The South Asia Solidarity Initiative, which has links to Islamists, and opposed the construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, also jumped the bandwagon to bully Bloomsbury India into withdrawing the book.

In a statement issued by Bloomsbury India, it stated “in view of very recent events including a virtual pre-publication launch organised without our knowledge by the authors, with participation by parties of whom the Publishers would not have approved, we have decided to withdraw publication of the book.

It ironically added saying “Bloomsbury India strongly supports freedom of speech but also has a deep sense of responsibility towards society”.

Meanwhile, the book was also marked unavailable in Amazon’s website while the propaganda book written by Muslim authors glorifying the anti-Hindu Shaheenbagh protests (also published by Bloomsbury India) remains available.

Bloomsbury Inda Chickens

Following the blatant double standards shown by Bloomsbury India, several authors took to announce their severe of ties with the publication house.

India’s Principal Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal wrote that he would never commit with Bloomsbury India to publish his books.

Retired IAS officer and author Sanjay Dixit announced that he is ending his relationship with Bloomsbury India and also added that he would be sending a notice to withdraw his book Nullifying Article 370 and Enacting CAA’ due to be released on Sep 20, 2020.

JNU Professor and author Anand Ranganathan has decided to return the advance paid by Bloomsbury for his next book being co-authored by Sheetal Ranganathan.

https://twitter.com/ARanganathan72/status/1297182261222076416

Author Kanchan Gupta wrote in his Twitter that Bloomsbury India always biased towards “left-liberal” authors.

Meanwhile, Garuda Prakashan has offered to publish the book once the authors reach out to them.

Is there a need for an alternative to Dravidian parties?

For more than 5 decades, Dravidian parties have held the stronghold in Tamil Nadu. Power shifted between the two major parties – DMK and the AIADMK. People chose one over the other in consecutive elections mostly because of anti-incumbency and with no other alternative options. The political atmosphere that was made airtight and occupied by the Dravidian parties has been punctured after the passing away of the matriarch and patriarch. A majority of the people in Tamil Nadu today feel the need to breathe fresh air. In this context, politics of Tamil Nadu itself is set to witness changes in the coming years.

Development Politics Vs Electoral politics

Tamil Nadu people would indisputably agree that Kingmaker Kamarajar’s rule was the golden era of the state because of his development policies such as building dams, hospitals, industries, free education, etc. The mid-day meal scheme pioneered by Mr. Kamarajar brought children to schools thereby increasing the school enrolment and literacy rates. In his rule he adopted development politics that provided livelihood over electoral politics that made people slaves to freebies.

Of course to win an election a healthy combination of both is needed but the AIADMK and the DMK more took doling out of freebies to unimaginable levels by providing free TVs, grinders, mixers, table fans, and cash of course, which in turn increased the debt of Tamil Nadu to 4.56 lakh crores. These freebies accompanied with corruption deteriorated the standard of politics in Tamil Nadu. If these redundant expenditures had been used in developing the livelihood, the state would not just have been in better finances but also in a better position.

Corruption: an uncontrollable issue

Corruption is one of the major threats all over the world in governance which causes entire society to suffer and makes the economy bleed. This is neither a small problem in Tamil Nadu. The Indian corruption survey carried out by Transparency International India (TII) in 20 states notes that 62% of the respondents paid bribes to get the work done in Tamil Nadu compared to 52% last year. According to the Indian corruption survey report 2019, Tamil Nadu ranks 7th in the most corrupted states list.

Mid-day meal scam, granite scam, gutka scam, and other scams have led to the people to lose confidence in the government machinery. While both the parties talk of saving water and farmers, their own partymen are involved in illegal sand mining that has led to the Cauvery drying up putting farmer lives and livelihoods at stake. Scams have become rampant that even in the recent e-pass verification introduced, the Government officials and the public have been involved in bribes and counterfeiting e-passes.

All these can only be stopped by implementing reforms and policies to change the system.

The Education system’s failure

So far, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalas schools haven’t been able to enter Tamil Nadu due to the misconception of Hindi imposition among people. Totally there are 661 Navodaya schools at present across the country except Tamil Nadu. This is because of 3 language formula (English, Hindi and regional language) used in Navodaya School which is against Tamil Nadu’s 2 language policy (English and Tamil) adopted in 1968 by C. N Annadurai.

If Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalas schools had been permitted inside Tamil Nadu, nearly 40000 poor rural students would have been benefitted. This school provides education free of cost and the quality of education is equal to CBSE schools. This opportunity was purposely denied by politicians as it threatened their business of running private schools. They had misled people under the false pretext of Hindi imposition and have shattered the dreams of the poor students who cannot afford high quality education.

The Dravidian politicians and their ecosystem say that the 3 language formula would destroy Tamil language then why do CBSE schools run by these politicians are allowed in Tamil Nadu having Hindi as their 3rd language compulsorily?

The Tamil Nadu government made an unwarranted and politically safe step recently that the state would have only 2-language policy no matter what. This is totally unfair and biased in favour of rich students. A poor student in rural area should have the right to the same standard of education that a rick urban kid gets. If the Dravidian politicians really care for the goodwill of the people of Tamil Nadu and Tamil language, then they should come out with a separate 10% reservation for government school students in the college admission and the state government jobs.

Blasphemy against Hinduism

The Dravidian movement spearheaded by the rabid demagogue E.V. Ramasamy (known as Periyar by his followers) perpetuated the trend of spewing venom against Hinduism and Hindu Gods. Their rationalism and criticism of religion are reserved towards only the Hindus as they won’t be able to live to see another day if they spoke against Islam or Christianity. What they do is at best hurt the sentiments of people create unwarranted controversies that disturb harmony. Each and every citizen has the freedom to follow his own religious faith. Atheism does not give anyone the liberty to hurt Hindu sentiments only.

For the last 50 years Tamil Nadu has been under the clutches of Dravidian parties with a regressive ideology rooted in double standards. It is time for a new energy that can reinvigorate Tamil Nadu. This new energy has to be rooted in the spiritual and cultural ethos of the land. Hence, spiritual politics is the need of the hour which can unite people.

Pakistan admits that Dawood Ibrahim is in Karachi

After years of denying his existence in their country, Pakistan finally featured him in their list of 88 banned terror groups disclosed as part of its efforts to wriggle out of tough financial sanctions for helping terrorists. It had accepted the presence of India’s most wanted don in Karachi. It had previously denied accusations in the past that had claimed that it shelters the underworld don blamed for the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts along with other terror groups.

According to Pakistani authorities, Dawood Ibrahim’s address is “White House, Near Saudi Mosque, Clifton” in Karachi, Pakistan. He also has other properties listed as “House Nu 37 – 30th Street – defence, Housing Authority, Karachi” and “Palatial bungalow in the hilly area of Noorabad in Karachi”.

This information came into light after Pakistan had imposed financial sanctions on several terror groups, including Hafiz Saeed, Masood Azhar and Dawood Ibrahim. It ordered for the seizure of their property, amongst other implications.

The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) put Pakistan on the grey list in June 2018 and asked Islamabad to implement a plan of action by the end of 2019, but the deadline was extended later due to COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, Pakistan had issued a terror list that featured major terror groups like the Jaish-e-Mohammed and the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

ISRO names moon crater after Vikram Sarabhai

Chandrayaan 2 completed one year around the moon on Friday. This is yet another milestone in the Indian Space Research Organisation’s list of achievements. It is to be noted that despite the Vikram lander failure, this was loaded with eight scientific instruments and has been performing well in the last one year. It also has enough fuel to last for seven years.

This mission was launched in July and landed on August 21 a year ago. It is being maintained at 100+/- 25 km polar orbit with regular orbit maintenance manoeuvres.

Chandrayaan-2 has captured images of the Moon and one of the craters has been named after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme, a statement said on Friday.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh said that as Vikram Sarabhai’s birth centenary year completed on August 12, this was a thanksgiving tribute to the scientist. “The Indian Space Research Organization has sought to pay tribute to him in a special way by announcing that Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter has captured the Moon images of ”Sarabhai Crater”,” the statement quoting Mr Singh said. The Sarabhai Crater is around 250 to 300 kilometres east of the crater where the Apollo 17 and Luna 21 Missions had landed.

After a year of operations, Chandrayaan-2 has mapped nearly 1.5 million square miles (4 million square kilometres) of terrain, according to ISRO. One area of interest was the Balmer-Kapteyn basin region, which includes a “light plains” deposit of lunar soil, or regolith, on top of an older, basaltic surface. This zone shows the changes that occur after meteorites slam into the moon’s surface; nearby areas have a clear impact crater system that generated the fresher shower of dust.

Critically ill Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny taken to Germany for treatment

After his wife had appealed to the Russian government, critically ill Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has been flown out of Siberia to Berlin for treatment. He had flown from Omsk, where he had been receiving treatment thus far and was taken in an ambulance aircraft to Germany. Doctors have claimed that his condition has been “very worrying”. The hospital said in a statement it would provide an update about his condition and further treatment once tests have been completed and after consulting with his family. It added this could take some time.

The air ambulance, arranged by the Cinema for Peace Foundation, flew to Berlin’s Tegel airport early on Saturday and Navalny, 44, was rushed to the Charite hospital complex.

Alexei, who has been a long time campaigner against the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his corrupt practices, had reportedly collapsed on a plane on Thursday after drinking poison-laced tea. Navalny had been exposing the Kremlin and its various scams for over a decade now, and he does, what he says is high-level graft and mobilising crowds of young protesters. He has been repeatedly detained for organising public meetings and rallies and sued over his investigations into corruption. He was barred from running in a presidential election in 2018.

Notably, two years ago, Pyotr Verzilov, another anti-Kremlin activist and a member of the Pussy Riot art collective, was treated at the Charite hospital after he was poisoned in Moscow. This is the same hospital in which Alexei had been receiving treatment.

Mahatma Gandhi’s glasses sell for £260,000 in UK auction

A pair of glasses which had been owned by Mahatma Gandhi were auctioned at the Bristol Auction House after they had found it hanging down a letterbox. It had been sold for £260,000.

“We found them just four weeks ago in our letterbox, left there by a gentleman whose uncle had been given them by Gandhi himself,” East Bristol Auctions wrote on Instagram on Friday. “An incredible result for an incredible item! Thanks to all those who bid.”

Mahatma Gandhi had been known for giving out old or unwanted pairs of glasses to those in need of those or who helped him. This pair of gold plated spectacles had been given to the uncle of the vendor who had found this pair while he had been working in South Africa for British Petroleum.

These glasses had initially been estimated at about £15,000. The auctioneer had nearly fallen off his chair upon hearing the final bid. “It’s a phenomenal result. These glasses represent not only an auction record for us but a find of international historical importance,” he said.

Plot thickens in Kerala gold smuggling case, crucial statement against Pinarayi’s blue eyed boy Sivasankar recorded

M Sivashankar, who is the former Principal Secretary to Chief Minister of Kerala and one of the main suspect in the high-profile gold smuggling case had the noose tightened around as a chartered accountant made a crucial statement with the Enforcement Directorate against him. Venugopal Iyer, the chartered accountant said that Sivasankar’s arguments thus far the case had been hollow. Swapna had apparently been introduced by Sivasankar to the office, where they have started a joint locker.

Notably, Sivasankar had mentioned that he had only introduced Swapna and had not asked her to open a joint locker. Venugopal said that the former had been with him until the meeting had ended, which according to him had lasted for several hours.

‘Talked to Swapna for hours in the presence of Sivasankar. An amount of ₹40 lakh was first deposited in the joint account. Later Swapna withdrew the amount at different times. Then asked to close the account,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court is yet to produce the verdict on Swapna Suresh’s bail plea in the case taken by the Enforcement Directorate.
