Will blow RSS headquarters and kill Mohan Bhagwat says Maharashtra State Kisan Mahasabha secretary Arun Bankar

The ongoing farmer’s protests took a turn for the worst when Arun Bankar, secretary of Maharashtra State Kisan Mahasabha who called himself a revolutionary since his student days, publicly threatened to blow up the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur and kill RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat if the Modi government did repeal the farm bills.

If that was not enough, Bankar declared that either PM Modi should withdraw the farm acts or he must commit suicide. The video of his speech has now gone viral on the internet.

Bankar also challenged the government if it had the courage to fire bullets on farmers which have not been the case because there has not been even the slightest initiation of violence on the part of Modi government.

Following his hate speech, a complaint has been lodged against Arun Bankar in the Betul Kotwali. An FIR has been lodged under Section 505, 506 after a complaint by BJP District President Babla Aditya Shukla.

The historic farm laws which most states and farmers have welcomed has not only become a political issue but it has started to take the shape of a threat to national security with several groups threatening violence and issuing death threats to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Already, several cell towers in Punjab have been damaged or destroyed by protesters along with professional agitators.

Leaders of political parties such as Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party are rubbing shoulders with people who are issuing death threats to PM Modi. It is ironic when one protester said Modi’s fate will be just like Indira Gandhi who was assassinated by her Sikh Bodyguards in October 1984 due to operation blue star and the subsequent assassination led to the Sikh pogrom of 1984 Delhi riots.

If that is not enough, the ugly head of the Khalistani movement has reared and many pro-Khalistani elements have now hijacked the farmer protests.

#RemoveUsFromScheduledCaste: Devendra Kula Vellalars protest rally sees historic crowd with historic demand

A sea of people belonging to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community took out a massive procession in Madurai headed by Puthiya Tamilagam party leader Dr. K. Krishnasamy, demanding to be delisted from the Scheduled Caste.

On Wednesday (January 6), several thousands of people thronged the temple city following the clarion call given by Dr. Krishnasamy who has been leading decades long struggle to regroup the seven sub-sects – Pallar, Kudumbar, Kadaiyar, Pannadi, Kaaladi, Vadhiriyar, and Devendrakulathar  — into Devendra Kula Vellalar and to get the community delisted from the Scheduled Caste.

Dr. Krishnasamy urged the Government of Tamil Nadu to issue a Government Order (G.O.) at the earliest finalizing the regrouping of seven sub-sects and to remove the community from the Scheduled Caste list. He said that it was unfair of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to begin his election campaign without issuing a G.O in this regard.

“What is the need for branding one community as ‘depressed’ and ‘downtrodden’?” Dr. Krishnasamy said highlighting that the Devendra Kula Vellalars were a vibrant agricultural community who were hailed in the Tamil Sangam literature and added that they were mistakenly included as ‘Depressed Class’ during the British rule.

“A society that lived in a state of nobility was pushed into abyss by listing under the Scheduled Caste.”, he said.

“It is because we have been kept in the Scheduled Caste list that we are not able to live in brotherhood and harmony with people from other communities”, Dr. Krishnasamy said noting that this was one of the reasons why they want to break away from the shackles that has been imposed on them with the term ‘SC’.

He lamented that even those get elected as independents to Parliament and Assembly do not pay heed to the problems of the Devendra Kula Vellalars adding that other political parties have enslaved people of the community and treat them as mere vote banks to grab power.

Dr. Krishnasamy said that the removal of Devendra Kula Vellalar from the list would not hamper any community’s reservation benefits and that their demand was to provide 6 per cent reservation to the community. He also said that the community can survive by doing business and is willing to forego all benefits of being listed under Scheduled Castes.

“I hope Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami would decide on the issuance of the G.O. after seeing this crowd” Dr. Krishnasamy said and added that he will not be meeting the Chief Minister until these demands are met.

“There will be no compromise on the matter of getting us removed from Scheduled Caste”, Dr. Krishnasamy said categorically.

Speaking about the role of Puthiya Tamilagam in the upcoming Assembly elections, Dr. Krishnasamy said that decision regarding that would be taken at an appropriate time. He said that the Puthiya Tamilagam party was strong enough to win 40 seats by contesting alone.

US Capitol secured hours after Trump supporters lay siege to the building, at least 4 dead

The U.S. Capitol was secured hours after a group of Trump supporters on January 6 breached the building, causing the building to go into a lockdown and forcing lawmakers, staff and reporters to evacuate. DC police confirmed that one woman who was shot by U.S. Capitol Police during the ensuing violence had died. At least three others died in “medical emergencies” near the Capitol grounds, police said. At least 47 people were arrested for curfew-related violations and several weapons, including long guns and hand guns, were recovered. Officials also said that two pipe bombs were recovered, one outside the Democratic National Committee and one outside the Republican National Committee.

Events leading to the Breach:

Protesters walked through the Capitol Statuary Hall, which separates the House and Senate, filling into both sides with U.S. flags, MAGA flags and Trump 2020 flags.

Just after 2:30 p.m. (local time) reporters were advised to “be prepared to get down” in their chairs and relocate.

Members of the US Congress bolted the door and Capitol police drew their guns and pointed them at the door.

At 2:31 p.m., everyone was evacuated from the floor. Police ushered everyone toward the Longworth House Office Building.

Around 3 p.m. (local time) protestors broke through federal barriers and police, and stormed the Capitol building.

Trump urged his supporters “to go home” in a video roughly two hours after the incident began, adding: “We love you. You’re very special. … I know how you feel. But go home, and go home in peace.” He repeated his claims that the election was stolen from him.

The situation now:

The Senate and House have now reconvened to finish certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win, although some Republican senators are placing objections on confirming the Electoral College results. Earlier, President Donald Trump had called on Vice President Mike Pence to reject the Electoral College votes. However, the VP defied the President and said that he doesn’t have the power to unilaterally reject the Electoral College votes.

Earlier on Wednesday, senators, House members and members of the media were evacuated to undisclosed locations following the breach. VP Pence was evacuated from the Senate chamber around 2 p.m. and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi connected with her caucus from a secure location. Pelosi said in a statement after the besiegers left the building that Congress will work through the night to finish certifying Biden’s Electoral College victory after Trump supporters’ entry into the building prevented lawmakers from certifying the vote earlier Wednesday.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a citywide curfew in response to the incident from 6 p.m. on Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday, local time. The National Guard was activated, and SWAT teams were deployed by the FBI into the Capitol, following evacuations. The public emergency declared earlier Wednesday has been extended by 15 days in response to the violence.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam also ordered a curfew in the D.C. suburbs of Alexandria and Arlington County from 6 p.m. on Jan. 6 to 6 a.m. on Jan. 7, local time. He said earlier Wednesday that he would send members of the Virginia National Guard in response to the incident, as well as 200 state troopers.

Chennai: TN Thowheed Jamaath operating out of property owned by Pakistani to be sealed

Following an attempt by the officials to close the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath (TNTJ) headquarters, several of their members protested outside it, causing public nuisance.

The building, which is in Mannady, had received repetitive notices from the state authorities as it violated the Enemy Property Act. Following no action from their end, officers from Custodian of Enemy Property for India, Mumbai, accompanied by revenue authorities and local police, sealed the office.

This was faced by a lot of dissent and ruckus that was caused by the members of the TNTJ, following which they sat outside their headquarters and engaged in a protest. The incident sparked protests in other parts of the State as well.

The issue arose because the building had initially been granted to Mr Abdul Rahman for the purpose of running a lungi firm. Instead, this had been used for serving as the headquarters of the TNTJ. It is to be noted that this person only holds the power of attorney, since the actual property belongs to Tuba Khaleeli, who now lives in Pakistan. This is in direct violation of the Enemy Property Act.

The Enemy Property Act empowers the Custodian of Enemy Property for India to continue to hold such property that vests in it rights, including title, interest and benefits arising out of such property. There are 9,406 “enemy properties” in India, of which 9,280 belong to Pakistan nationals and 126 to Chinese. The properties are vested in the Custodian of Enemy Property for India.

Jacobite faction of Malankara Church says they will support BJP if PM Modi resolves long standing dispute

The Jacobite faction of Kerala’s Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in order to resolve the property dispute with the Orthodox faction has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help settle the dispute.

The Jacobite faction has said that it will support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if it resolves the long-standing feud in the church, reports Swarajya.

Thomas Alexandrios Metropolitan, the Jacobite faction protest committee convenor has invited Modi to find a solution to the dispute and also termed the Centre’s efforts to hold peace talks “a blessing”.

“So far, the Prime Minister has not informed us his response after holding talks,” Metropolitan said.

Metropolitan also made a categorical statement when he said, “Those who help the Jacobite church will get our support. We have proved our strength in the local bodies polls,” he said when he was questioned about BJP’s motive in trying to settle the dispute.

Metropolitan, however, was balanced and said that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had helped the Jacobites by promulgating an ordinance on burial at Christian cemeteries and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan government had assured to settle the issue “with conciliation”.

“However, if the Centre takes initiative to settle the dispute, we will support them irrespective of the politics”, the leader of the Jacobite said.

The conflict between the Jacobite and Orthodox groups in Kerala started in 1912 when the Malankara Church was split into the Jacobite and Orthodox groups. However, they reunified in 1959 only to break up again in 1973.

The statement comes on the heels of Prime Minister Modi who held talks with both factions last week to settle the dispute which in reality is all about the control of about 1,000 churches and properties between them.

The Prime Minister on his part has assured to study the situation and revert to find a cordial solution.

For the Kerala LDF government, this issue has become crown of thorns after the Supreme Court order in 2017 order asked the Kerala government to take over the Jacobite churches and hand them over to the Orthodox faction.

However, Kerala CM had welcomed the PM’s mediation efforts and ruled out any politics being involved in Modi’s role.

But the problem is that the Orthodox faction of the Malankara Church has objected to the Jacobites effort for an out-of-the-court solution despite the Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court can never be seen as a third party but Modi is been seen as an outsider by the Orthodox and they have a reservation that the mediation could turn into an arbitration.

For a long time the Jacobites have raised the complaint that they are being alienated from their own churches but the Orthodox faction wants the dispute to be settled within the framework of the apex court order, which the Jacobites point that many issues will arise out of the ruling which also need to be addressed. One particular point is the inability to bury the bodies of their family members in cemeteries of the churches their forefathers had built, after the Supreme Court ruling.

The Jacobite faction, in particular, is seeking the Prime Minister’s intervention to give them “religious freedom, freedom of worship and justice to the problems the Jacobite Syrian Church is undergoing”.

The Kerala government has been in talks with both the factions since September, but the effort has been in vain as it does not want to lose the support from both groups, hence it has failed to reach an equitable solution.

For years, due to the dispute between the Jacobites and the Orthodox church has led to many churches closed for years. Some of them are in dilapidated condition.

The Orthodox Church wants the validity of the 1934 Constitution of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church to be upheld that will allow it to govern the parishes under the church which has already been upheld by the Supreme Court but the Jacobites are not in agreement.

In Kerala, the years of the dispute has now become a serious law and order problem as supporters of both factions have come to blows.

Breonna Taylor gets justice at last: Louisville police fire detectives involved in the shooting, appoints Erika Shields

Louisville has hired Atlanta’s former chief, Erika Shields, to lead its police department after months of unrest over the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor and fired two more officers involved in the deadly raid. This was announced on Wednesday, with the appointment of the new chief.

Detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes, who were fired on Tuesday, are the latest detectives the department has terminated in connection with the fatal police shooting of Taylor. A third detective, Brett Hankison, was fired in June for “blindly” firing 10 rounds into her apartment.

Cosgrove, who the FBI concluded fired the shot that killed Taylor, violated procedures for use of force and failing to use a body camera during the March 13 search warrant. Jaynes, meanwhile, the officer who secured the search warrant for Taylor’s apartment, was found in violation of department policy for truthfulness and search warrant preparation.

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency room technician, was shot and killed by Louisville police officers in her apartment during a flawed forced-entry raid in the early morning hours of March 13, 2020. Taylor’s death, along with that of other Black people at the hands of law enforcement, sparked a summer of protests calling for police reform.

Germany makes the presence of women mandatory on large executive boards of companies

Germany has brought a new legislation that states that companies listed under its government must mandatorily include women on their executive boards. This milestone law came to power after agreement by both houses of the country’s coalition government on Wednesday (January 6).

It is to be noted that several attempts to close this gender gap voluntarily had failed, following which this bill was proposed in the Parliament, and got passed after a bit of deliberation. The government added that a further quota would also be introduced for “corporations under public law”, such as health insurance companies and pension and accident insurance institutions as well as the Federal Employment Agency.

The law sends “a very strong signal”, Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht told reporters, urging corporations to “take advantage of the opportunity presented by highly qualified women”. “We can show that Germany is on the way to becoming a modern society fit for the future,” Family Affairs Minister Franziska Giffey was quoted saying in a report.

Despite being one of the world’s biggest economies, Germany has always struggled with equal representation for women in the workplace. There have been jokes about how a woman can much rather hold the highest office in the country as opposed to equal representation at a run-of-the-mill workplace. This new bill now dictates that management boards with more than three members must include at least one woman, reversing a voluntary system that critics argue has failed to achieve the required shift towards gender equality.

Thane Municipal Corporation comes up with ‘period room’ in community toilets

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has coordinated with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to introduce a period room for women within the community toilet. This room consists of proper water supply, a jet spray, sanitary napkin dispenser, a bottom lid dustbin to prevent any contact with it, hand washing stations, incinerator and recycle bins, hooks for hanging clothes, in addition to a urinal.

The Muse Foundation is the NGO that carried out the survey following which they proposed the idea of a period room to the TMC.  This is a first for the state and has been established after surveying over a 1,000 women. These women belong to slum areas and are the primary users of these toilets. They had been facing a lot of difficulties during their menstrual cycles due to lack of sanitary facilities.

“A survey has been conducted in Thane through 2019 to study women’s menstrual hygiene practices covering 1000 women in 15 slums in Thane. The primary findings of the survey revealed the heavy dependency of women in slums on community toilet and the problems they faced to manage menstruation due to lack of water, unsafe changing rooms, absence of disposal mechanism for soiled napkins,” Manish Joshi, deputy commissioner, Thane Municipal Corporation was quoted saying in a report.

In addition to the facilities, they had also painted the walls of the municipal toilets in a colourful manner to make it seem more welcoming and conducive. The wall also promotes sustainable menstruation with essential points listed on it, informed one of the officials from the TMC health department.

DMK functionary stops people from getting govt’s Pongal allowance, causes public nuisance

In Ottanchathiram near Dindigul, a DMK Panchayat leader caused ruckus during the distribution of the Pongal allowance and rations putting the public at inconvenience. This caused a delay in the issue of rations, and an outbreak of a brawl between the DMK and ADMK party members.

This incident took place in the Periyakottai village, that belongs to the Ottanchathiram Taluka of Dindigul district. The issue of rations and allowance for the celebration of Pongal was inaugurated by officials from the ADMK.

Malarvizhichelvi, the DMK Panchayat leader belonging to the same village, arrived at the spot and created a huge ruckus preventing people from getting the money and rations. She questioned as to why she was not informed of this event, and argued that she was not being given importance. She went on to say that only she had the authority to issue the Pongal allowance, and created a commotion.

As result of this, public had to stand for over 2 hours as she incessantly continued to argue with the officials present in the ration shop. They vehemently expressed their displeasure over the issue and condemned this reckless act by the DMK official.
