PLA soldiers write goodbye letters to spouses amidst fear of war

A report by the Taiwan News mentioned that, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had asked its soldiers to write a goodbye letter to their spouses if war was to break out the next day.

Such actions are initiated when a country prepares for war and by asking its soldiers to write letters, there is fear that China was planning to attack Taiwan.

Others told the “organization” not to worry, the “motherland” not to worry, and the people not to worry, because they would “return in glory,” according to a PLA video.

Even as the world is trying to find a cure to the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic, Chinese fighter jets and warships are getting close and have frequently approached Taiwan, crossing into the island nation’s Air Defense Identification Zone.

As per reports, China is facing its worst floods in decades and the communist regime might try to provoke a confrontation to distract people from its own failings.

Aluva Union Christian College students come forward and accuse ‘intellectual’ and Kerala State Film Award winning professor of sexual harassment

Several alumni of Union Christian College, Aluva in Kerala have come forward and accused a prominent ‘intellectual’ professor who is also a State Film Award winner of sexual harassment.

In a video released by the Instagram video handle Papicha, several women alumni of the college have come out in support of another woman who narrates her traumatic experience.

“Our campus is one of the spaces which made us strong.. But in that space where we were becoming strong, where we had power to get justice, we stayed silent. Today.. in this space, we want to confess it”, starts Azra, a student of the college.

Haritha another student says that they were shocked when they came to know of the incident. She says that they wanted to do something about it but couldn’t. “We were filled with guilt that we couldn’t do anything then. This should not be repeated. What happened to our friend should not happen to any other girl.”

Amrita, an alumnus of the college goes on to recollect the incident. She says that she was sexually harassed by a prominent ‘intellectual’ professor during her third year of undergraduation when she was coming out of the canteen. Amrita says that this professor had seen her coming and extended his arm as if to shake hands but instead grabbed her hip and walked away casually. “I was shocked, my body was numb, my vision went dark and I couldn’t control my tears. I managed to reach the class but could not sit through. Later, I went to the washroom and cried.” Amrita narrates.

She gathered up courage and went on to confront him but was not to be found at his table. Amrita then found him walking outside the canteen. She went up to him and asked him to stop. Pretending nothing wrong had happened, he asked her what was the matter.

“Why did you grab me like that? Don’t you know that you are teacher and I am student? Do you find this behaviour to be normal? Is this the politics you talk about?”, she had reportedly asked to which the professor replied “Amruta, I did it thinking you will take it in ‘that’ sense. You are one of the very few people I have felt attached to in this campus, that’s why I was being ‘free’ with you.

She goes on to say that the professor kept implying that since he’s a teacher and she’s only a student, he has the power and freedom to behave like that with her. “I kept arguing with him but he never accepted that what he did was wrong. I kept crying and told him his action hurt me but every time he kept replying that ‘no, it was your mistake, what you understood is wrong’, Amrita says.

She says that it took her several months to come out of the trauma and was hesitant to speak out about the incident as she was not sure how many would come in support of her against the ‘popular, intellectual and State Film Award winner’. “I was doubtful of myself whether what I did was wrong. I later realised how big a blunder it was, when we are subjected to sexual harassment, how can we be the culprit?” she asks in the video. Also, she adds that as she was in her third year, she did not have the time to go after him and that he won’t come behind her once she is done with college.

But what triggered her was that he was later promoted as the head of the department and a lot of students unaware of her plight had posted about his achievements and innocence online.

That is when Amrita realized that it was important for her to speak up. She says that though she graduated, he still remains a faculty there which makes several girls vulnerable to harassment.

“I could come out of the trauma but there is a chance that others might be exploited or could not stand up to him.”, Amrita says.

Another student Anna says that they were all affected even though it was Amrita who was abused. She says that they did not lodge a complaint as he might hurt them using his power and influence.

“We are now aware of our mistake. We are going forward by correcting our mistake. Be it a teacher or anyone else, we cannot tolerate this kind of action from anyone. May we have the strength to support one among us if they have to go through something similar. Let there be more “opening up”, and true faces of people be known”, another student Anagha says.

The Commune upon going through the website of the college found that the unnamed accused in the above video happens to be one Cheri Jacob K, HoD of Department of English. He has been an Assistant Professor with the Department of English since 2006. He had completed his masters from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He had received the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Book on Cinema in 2016 for his Cinema Muthal Cinema Vare: Chalachitra Samskara Patanangal. He had won the state film award for the Best Article on Cinema: Sepia: Cinemayile Nirangalude Soundarya Rashtreeyangal in 2012.

Sonia to continue as Congress chief for the time being

After a 7-hour meeting of the Congress high command, it has been concluded that Sonia will continue as the interim President. This has come amidst rumours that had been floating around claiming that she might step down and let a non-Gandhi or a non-Vadra take over as President. The meeting that commenced at 11:00 A.M went on till 5 PM.

“In light of the deliberations, the CWC unanimously requests Sonia Gandhi to continue to lead the Indian National Congress until such time as circumstances will permit an AICC session to be convened,” said K.C. Venugopal, general secretary, in a press briefing. He added that Rahul and Sonia Gandhi have been at the forefront of fighting against the Modi government.

The new President might be elected within six months and there are detailed resolutions that are being drafted in this regard. Notably, Sonia had offered to step down as interim president following a letter by more than 20 leaders demanding an ‘active, full-time and visible’ president. At a press briefing, party general secretary K.C. Venugopal says CWC took note of the letter written by certain Congress leaders, demanding ‘full-time and effective leadership’.

Sonia had completed a year as President after Rahul Gandhi stepped down on August 11, 2019. She was a full-fledged party president for over 19 years from May 1998 to December 2017 when Rahul Gandhi took over the reins from her and resigned in May 2019 owning moral responsibility for the party’s rout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Telangana inaugurates first plasma bank

Telangana inaugurated its first-ever plasma bank on Sunday. This was launched by G Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, and is an initiative by the Rotary Club of Hyderabad.

Speaking at the event, Reddy thanked the Rotary Club and said that plasma therapy was the only hope until a vaccine was introduced. “Among the two Telugu states, the first plasma bank has been set up today in Hyderabad. Till now, there is no vaccine for the coronavirus, hence, every person must safeguard themselves from the virus. The state has taken several measures to fight the virus, and this plasma bank is one of them,” he said.

“Today is a significant day as a record number of 10,25,000 tests were conducted on a single day. It is good but we must do better. The Prime Minister has been constantly interacting with CMs and all the stakeholders to contain the spread of the virus in the country. The spread of the virus has been effectively managed in Delhi and it is standing tall as a model state in managing the virus spread. Today it has 20,000 empty beds,” Reddy added.

He went on to say that people had to be aware of this and those who had recovered from the virus are to come forward and donate plasma. He further said that people should be careful and not being so could cost their lives.

IIT-B holds virtual convocation for students amid pandemic using their digital avatars

IIT Bombay held a virtual convocation for its graduate students using digital avatars on Sunday. Its 58th convocation featured virtual reality (VR) avatars of the students and the dignitaries, who give away the certificates. This had been telecast on DD Sahyadri as well as on social media.

A statement released by the institute said: “The institute thought it best to arrange such a VR-convocation for the graduating students as we did not wish to put their health at risk but at the same time, we did not wish to deprive them of the sense of achievement and pride of passing out of India’s premier engineering Institute.”

Each graduate had their own personal avatar that received the degree certificate from the digital avatar of Director Subhasis Chaudhari. The medal winners had received it from the Chief Guest, Professor Duncan Haldane, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics for 2016, and a professor of Princeton University. All the recipients and attendees were digitally assembled after being video-graphed individually.

In his address, the guest of honour, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone, Stephen Schwarzman, said: “India occupies a unique position in the world today, especially when it comes to technology, where it has established global leadership through its talent. Of the 72 Indian-origin engineers who have founded unicorns across the world, 50 per cent are IIT alumni. IIT engineers are defining the global technology landscape and the newest alumni will be the next generation of future global leaders who will advance that mission. You, IIT Bombay graduates, must seize the opportunity to be leaders of impact who are a force for change — and for good — in this world.”

The convocation commenced in a traditional manner, with the institute’s theme song marking the commencement. It also had a virtual tour of the campus and hostels scheduled.

Endangered species at a higher risk of contracting COVID

A recent study has shown that several endangered species like gorillas, orangutans, gibbons, grey whales and bottlenose dolphins, and Chinese hamsters, are at a higher risk of getting infected by the novel coronavirus.

Domesticated animals such as cats, cattle and sheep are found to have a medium risk of contracting the virus, while dogs, horses and pigs are found to have a low risk. Researchers in the University of California, Davis (UC DAVIS) predict that endangered animals are at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

ACE2, Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 is the main cellular receptor is the main viral target in human beings. Almost 410 species contain this enzyme which is made up of 25 amino acids and the viral spike protein needs to bind to all of them to cause an infection. Scientists have found that animals with all 25 amino acid residues matching the human protein are predicted to be at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19 via the ACE2 receptor, using molecular modelling.

Several critically-endangered primate species, such as the Western lowland gorilla, Sumatran orangutan and Northern white-cheeked gibbon, are predicted to be at very high risk of infection by COVID-19 via their ACE2 receptor.
