After OC biryani, it is now OC groceries: DMK cadre’s son brandishes billhook and demands free groceries at grocery store

Raja, who runs a grocery store in Mudhu Nagar, Cuddalore had an unusual visitor on Saturday. A man took out a billhook and started hitting at the store demanding free groceries. As the staff at the store stood shocked, the man used his billhook and started hitting at the shelves and products. Customers who were shopping at the store ran away in fear.

The man pointed the billhook at the store owner and threatened him for refusing to give away the groceries for free.

The incident was recorded in the CCTV camera fixed at the shop. The store owner Raja took the evidence to file a police complaint. However, the police did not take action immediately. After the CCTV footage went viral on social media, the police arrested the man and produced him before the magistrate. He was later put in Cuddalore jail.

During the investigation, it was found that the man named Imayan was the son of a DMK office bearer. Before this incident, he is said to have been involved in a similar incident where he brandished a billhook and demanded items for free. The police had at that time sent him after a warning.

Earlier this week, a biryani outlet in Karur was vandalized by a DMK office bearer after he was refused biryani as there was nothing left. Two years before in August 2018, Yuvraj, a DMK youth wing secretary and another party member named Dhivakar thrashed a hotel staff after he refused to give them free biryani.

Project P-75I: Under Make In India, bidding process for six submarines to begin by October

In a move to bolster the Indian Navy capabilities amid growing tension with China, the Government is set to launch the bidding process for ₹55,000 crore mega project to build six conventional submarines by October via Request of Proposal (RFP) route, reported in Economic Times.

Code-named project ‘P-75 I’, it will be the first big defence project executed under the government’s strategic partnership model. Under this model, qualifying domestic companies will be joining hands with qualifying foreign defence majors to produce high-end military platforms. This will help India reduce import dependence on critical weapons platforms.

Private-sector conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) which is already involved in defence and the state-owned Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL) have already qualified all benchmarks. Qualified foreign defence majors include ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems of Germany, Navantia of Spain and Naval Group of France.

“The construction of six submarines under Project 75(I) will provide a major boost to the existing submarine design and manufacturing eco-system in India through transfer of design and equipment technology as well as necessary skill sets,” a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

Unde the project 75(I), Indian Navy intends to acquire six diesel-electric submarines with advanced air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems that will increase their operational range.

Indian Navy has plans to operate 24 submarines, including six nuclear attack submarines because they are major force multipliers and perhaps the best weapons platform for deterrence. At present, the navy has a fleet of 15 conventional and two nuclear submarines.

Srinagar-Leh highway closed for civilians as China makes provocative military movements in Pangong Tso

In an unprecedented decision, the Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed for the civilians. This is due to the fresh “provocative” military movements by the Chinese troops on the intervening night of August 29-30 in eastern Ladakh.

The road will only remain open for the defence forces and vehicles. As per the Indian Army, the Chinese troops attempted to unilaterally change the status quo on the southern bank of the Pangong Tso Lake area in eastern Ladakh.

In a statement, the defence ministry said, “On the night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo.”

The Indian troops detected activity when a sizeable number of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tried to enter Indian territory.

Sources in the Indian Army said, “Chinese Army had tried to transgress into Indian areas using a sizeable number of troops but the Indian Army preempted the Chinese attempt and foiled their move.”

“The area was strengthened by quick deployment of more troops,” it said.

Army Spokesperson Col Aman Anand said, “The Indian Army is committed to maintaining peace and tranquillity through dialogue, but is also equally determined to protect its territorial integrity”.

As of now, a brigade commander-level flag meeting is in progress at Chushul to resolve the issues.

India and Russia declared joint winners at International Chess Olympiad

India made history on Sunday (August 31) by winning the championship at the International Chess Olympiad 2020 along with Russia. This is the first ever that India has won the Chess Olympiad and the first one for Russia since 2002.

This is the first time that the Chess Olympiad was conducted online by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The grand finale was however marred by server malfunction allegedly due to a global internet outage that had severely many countries including India. Two of the Indian players, Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh, lost out connection and thereby crucial time towards the end of the game,

Initially, Russia was declared winners.  The decision was reviewed after India raised the issue of server malfunction and internet outage. T

he India team was represented by Vishwanathan Anand, Vidit, Harikrishna, Koneru Hampy, Harika, Praggnanandhaa, Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh. The Russian team members were Nepomniachtchi, Dubov, Goryachkina, Artemiev, Esipenko, Lagno, Kosteniuk, Sarana and Shuvalova.

All games ended in draw in the first round. It was a narrow escape by Russia, as India was clearly ahead which is when the Indian team faced problems. FIDE then declared both India and Russia as joint winners and gold medals were awarded to both the teams.

World Champion and Grand Master Vishwanathan Anand took to twitter to announce the victory.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju congratulated the winners.

QUAD Nations to meet and discuss China’s growing presence in Indo-Pacific

Foreign Ministers and the respective national security advisors (NSAs) of the QUAD comprising India, Japan, Australia and the United States (US) are planning to meet in the month of September and October due to the overtly aggressive moves by China in the Indo-Pacific region, the Economic Times reported.

This is a major geopolitical development the QUAD is planning back-to-back and in-person meetings of the representatives ahead of the US’ presidential elections which are scheduled to be held in November.

“However, no final call has been taken yet even as preparations for the summits are underway”, states the report.

On Friday (August 28), US’ NSA Robert O’Brien had revealed that talks on security with India, Australia and Japan are being planned in September and October. India’s NSA Ajit Doval is expected to travel to Hawaii in October to meet his counterpart as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to meet Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in September.

O’Brien went on to assert, “We’re seeing a very assertive, a very aggressive China and the US is not going to back down from its long-held principles that the world’s ocean ways and international waters should be free for navigation, and the same with space and with air rights and international airspace.”

China provokes India again: Carries out provocative military movements in Pangong Tso, India thwarts attempts to change status quo

China has once again gone back on its word. In yet another violation of the consensus arrived through military and diplomatic engagements, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out provocative military movements and tried to change the status quo in the southern bank of the lake on Saturday night.

The Indian Army has said that Indian troops undertook measures to strengthen their positions and pre-empted the PLA action in the region.

The Economic Times quoting the statement given by the Indian Army spokesperson Col Aman Anand reported “On the night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo. Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the Southern Bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground.”

“The Indian Army is committed to maintaining peace and tranquility through dialogue, but is also equally determined to protect its territorial integrity. A Brigadier Commander level Flag Meeting is in progress at Chushul to resolve the issues”, Col Anand was quoted saying.

Inefficient and corrupt who have completed 30 years in service to be weeded out through compulsory retirement

In another significant blow to bureaucratic corruption, the Centre has asked all its departments to review the record of employees who have completed 30 years in service and show the doors to the corrupt and inefficient by retiring them prematurely.

The order issued by the Ministry of Personnel and Public Grievances and Pensions stated “The employees’ performance review is conducted under the Fundamental Rule (FR) 56 (J) and 56 (I), and also under Rule 48 (1) (b) of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 1972, that gives “absolute right” to the appropriate authority to retire a government servant, “if it is necessary to do so in public interest”.

It means that the government may at any time after a government servant has attained the age of 50/55 years or completed 30 years of service, as the case may be, retire the person prematurely in public interest. The government has the right to compulsorily retire those who have completed a service period of 30 years by giving a notice period of not less than 3 months in writing or 3 months’ pay and allowances.

The FR 56 (J) states that service record of a group A and B category officer can be reviewed if he/she has attained the age of 50 years (in case of joining service before 35 years of age) or after attaining 55 years (in case of joining service after 35 years of age).

The Ministry has asked the departments to maintain a register for conducting the review. Composition of a review committee and the broad criteria for conducting the assessment of employees’ performance has also been notified.

Government servants who are found to be inefficient, corrupt and whose integrity is doubtful will be made to retire compulsorily. The criteria states that ordinarily, no government servant should be retired on ground of ineffectiveness if in any event, he would be retiring on superannuation within a period of one year from the date of consideration of his case. However, it added that if there is a sudden and steep fall in the competence, efficiency or effectiveness of a government servant, it would be open to review.

After coming back to power in 2019, the Modi government has undertaken the exercise of weeding out of corrupt and inefficient officers 5 times. The first wave of compulsory retirements was done on June 10, 2019, when 12 top government officials mainly belonging to the income tax department were shown the doors. In August 2019, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs made 22 officers to retire compulsorily on charges of corruption. In September, 15 tax officials were retired after PM Modi mentioned that there existed blacksheeps in the tax administration who have misused their powers and harassed tax payers. 21 tax officers were made to compulsorily retire in November 2019 for various charges taking the total number of tax officers compulsorily retired in 2019 to 85.

RSS sets up study centres for rural students in Madhya Pradesh

In an effort to build good qualities and character of students at a young age, the RSS will be setting up ‘Balagokulam’ (study centres) in 31 districts of Madhya Pradesh.

The RSS Madhya Bharat branch has introduced at least 600 study centres in Madhya Pradesh’s villages in August as schools have come to a halt due to COVID19.

“The schools are closed and students are being educated through online classes due to Covid 19. There are many students in MP who are lagging behind in online classes as they don’t have smart mobile phones. To help such students up to class 8, more than 1000 volunteers have started teaching at Balgokulam centres for three hours daily with the help of books and community radio, in which special educational programmes are being run to teach students,” Satish Pimplikar, the RSS leader in-charge of the programme was quoted saying in a report published by Hindustan Times.

Volunteers of the women’s wing of the RSS, the Rashtra Sevika Samiti, are also involved in teaching and helping students learn in these study centres.

Through the study centres, children are taught regular lessons along with instilling patriotism by telling stories of freedom fighters, and also educating them on the India’s rich culture. The classes start with Saraswati Vandana (worship to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge) and ends with Vande Mataram.

Social distancing and other COVID19 norms are put in place in these study centres. Children bring their books that were distributed by school teachers during lockdown. They are also given simple homework.

Most of these centres are located in disadvantaged areas. 1000 centres are expected to be started in next 2 weeks.

Congress spokesperson JP Dhanopia called this an ‘expansion plan’ of the RSS to ‘spread saffron ideology’. The BJP has praised the initiative and hit out at the Congress saying that it is their habit to criticise everything and that they are pessimistic people.

Rakshita becomes ‘Modi Rakshita’: When PM Modi went out of his way to fulfill the wishes of this girl child

Gunasekaran hails from Pavithramanikkam village near Thiruvaru and works at the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank. He has a daughter and a son. His daughter Rakshita was a first grade student studying at the English section of Pavithramanikkam Panchayat Union Middle School.

Rakshita’s father wanted to put her in a Kendriya Vidyalaya. So he applied to Kendra Vidyalaya School in Thiruvarur in 2015 under the seats earmarked for intake through Right to Education Act.

But Rakshita was not able to get the free seat through the provision under RTE Act. Dejected, Rakshita and her parents wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi by post and mail asking for his help. After writing a couple of more letters, the Prime Minister’s Office informed the Ministry of Education to accommodate Rakshita in the Prime Minister’s quota which was communicated to Rakshita and her parents.

When Rakshita’s parents took this letter and went to the Kendriya Vidyalaya, it seems that the school principal had said that they could enroll the daughter only if she knew Hindi.

Rakshita then learnt to read and write Hindi letters within few days and showed it to the school principal. She was admitted then admitted into class 2 in 2016.

Rakshita’s parents had paid the school fees at the beginning of her admission in class 2. As Gunasekaran and his family survived on meagre income, he again wrote to the Prime Minister seeking exemption or assistance for paying fees.

Following this, a letter was sent to Regional Director of Kendriya Vidyalaya Schools in Chennai communicating the exemption of fees for Rakshita. This was then communicated to Thiruvarur Kendriya Vidyalaya. Rakshita now studies at the Thiruvarur Kendriya Vidyalaya without having to pay fees.

Rakshita, who joined Kendriya Vidyalaya with the help of the Prime Minister and continues to study with his support, has changed her name to Modi Rakshita as a gesture of thanks to Prime Minister Modi.

She is now in class 6 and hopes to meet Prime Minsiter Modi someday in person. She aspires to serve India after growing up.
