Indian Army captures important Chinese military camp

In a move of strategic significance, the Indian Army has captured an important Chinese military camp in the surrounding hills of the Pangong Tso lake as reported by The Telegraph.

This unexpected military action has taken China by surprise and is said to have been executed early morning of Monday (31 August) as a form of direct retaliation to China’s unprovoked military aggression.

This decision was taken after China had sent 500 of its troops to try and cross into Spanggur – which is a narrow valley near Chushul. This aggression was immediately stopped by our forces that engaged the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for three hours in hand to hand combat following which the PLA was forced to retreat.

This move has come at a time when the Indian Army has reportedly gained a big advantage over the PLA by occupying a strategic height at the southern region of the Pangong Tso lake.

The Indian Army’s special operations battalion went all out on the intervening night of August 29 and 30, and occupied the heights near the area where Chinese troops are camped.

“Height occupied by Indian Army troops including a special operations battalion is south of Southern bank of Pangong Tso near Thakung. Height was lying dormant and can give strategic advantage to the side which holds it for controlling the southern bank of lake and areas around it”, reported TOI citing sources.

This drastic measure was taken due to China trying to unilaterally alter the agreed status quo in the region by taking military action on the southern bank of Pangong Tso lake. This is an old Chinese strategy known as salami slicing, wherein they will slowly occupy small tracts of land and then call for a ceasefire. However, the Indian Army has pushed them back and has thwarted China’s nefarious designs and strengthened India’s positions.

Israel-Hamas reach truce: Hamas agrees to de-escalate tensions over Gaza, wants trade restrictions lifted

Hamas, the Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist militant organisation that controls the Gaza Strip, has reached a Qatari-mediated deal to end the latest escalation of violence with Israel.

This development comes as the first commercial El Al flight from Tel Aviv arrived in Abu Dhabi after full diplomatic relations was reached between the United Arab Emirates and the Jewish state of Israel, the biblical homeland of the Jews.

After talks with Qatari envoy Mohammed el-Emadi office of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said on Monday that “an understanding was reached to rein in the latest escalation and end [Israeli] aggression against our people”. Qatari envoy Mohammad al-Emadi, has been meeting regularly with Gazan and Israeli officials over the past week.

Israel had been retaliating in the Gaza strip on Hamas sites almost daily since August 6 in response to the attack carried out by Hamas terrorists who used airborne incendiary and fired rockets into southern Israel.

As part of the deal, Hamas has said it will stop sending incendiary balloons over Israel and, “In return, it says that Israel is undertaking to go back to the pre-escalation situation which means allowing fishermen out into the Mediterranean, easing the restriction on goods coming in and also presumably the restoration of fuel supplies to Gaza’s only power station.”

While Israel did not explicitly confirm or endorse the arrival of the peace-deal,it  said that it would fully reopen the fishing zone off the coast of the Gaza Strip and the enclave’s border crossings from Tuesday.

However, the Israel’s military liason to the Palestinians said in a statement that the decision will be tested on the ground and if Hamas fails to meet its obligations, Israel would react accordingly.

However, it remains to be seen how long Hamas will hold its end of the bargain and cease terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

Simultaneous elections speculated, PMO holds meeting to discuss common voter list

The Prime Minister’s Office earlier this month held consultations with top officials about having a common voter’s list for all elections – local bodies, Assembly and Lok Sabha.

The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary to Prime Minister PK Mishra on August 13 and discussed two important points. First, a constitutional amendment to Articles 243K and 243ZA would be required that would make it mandatory to have a single electoral roll for all polls in the country.

Second, to persuade the state governments to tweak their respective laws and adopt the Election Commission’s (EC) voters list for local body polls as some of the states like Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand, Odisha, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and also the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have their own voters list for local body polls.

This is significant as a common voters’ list align with the idea of simultaneous elections, an idea that the present government has been mooting for a long time. It is being speculated that the Center is likely to take a key decision on a having simultaneous elections across the country soon.

The idea of preparing a common voters list has been endorsed by the Law Commission in its 255th report and also by the Election Commission.

The Modi government has already indicated that it can save on election expenses by holding simultaneous elections in all states and for the centre across the country. It is also one of the promises made by the BJP in its election manifesto.

Thiruvonam: Truth vs Propaganda

Thiruvonam or simply Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated in the state of Kerala and by Malayalees across the world. It falls on the Thiruvonam nakshatram (star) in the Malayalam month of Chingam according to the Malayalam calendar, which is a Hindu calendar and has Hindu origins. Even though it is a Hindu festival, it is celebrated by non-Hindu Malayalees too as the festival is inherent to Kerala’s culture.

However, there have been many attempts to give a mischievous twist to the ancient tales associated with the festival by the cabal of usual suspects comprising of left/Marxist historians, liberal sociologists and Dravidian Stockists, who claim that the ‘dark-skinned Asura King Mahabali’ (or Maveli) was a just ‘non-Aryan’ king who was deceived by the ‘white invader Brahmin God Vamana’ and the entire land of Kerala got ‘sanskritised’ and colonised by the Brahmins with legends and mythology of the ‘subaltern castes’ getting antagonized or subsumed in the Hindu landscape. They claim that celebration of Onam is a ‘creative resistance’ against an ‘unjust invasion’.

While these distortions are rubbished by the masses, it serves as a fodder for Hinduphobic elements that satiates the itch to break civilizational and cultural unity of the land by peddling such narratives.

In this article, we bust these hollow narratives peddled by such elements.

Propaganda #1: Mahabali was a Dalit

Truth: He was not. Raja Mahabali was the grandson of Prahlada and the descendant of Sage Kashyap, thus a Brahmin himself. While the caste of a God/Asura does not matter for worship, one is pushed to emphasize on the same to give a rebuttal to the casteists masquerading as progressives.

Propaganda #2: Mahabali/Maveli was a Dravidian king.

Truth: Yes, he was a Dravidian king but not in the racial sense. He can be considered a Dravidian king because he belongs to the region of ‘tra’ (three) ‘vid’ (sea), the region where three seas meet.

If the Dravidian chauvinists refuse to accept the geographical definition of the term ‘Dravidian’, let it be known that Mahabali was a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu who in their lens is an ‘Aryan’.

Propaganda #3: Vamana was a white Aryan Brahmin.

Truth: There are many murals and paintings that depict Vamana as dark-skinned and Mahabali as fair complexioned. So, the argument that Vamana being a ‘white Aryan’ falls flat. But yes, Vamana was a Brahmin who had a physical deficiency.

This will come as a severe blow to Dravidian chauvinists but Vamana avatar is hailed in the Sangam text Perumpannatrupadai.

Propaganda #4: ‘Aryan’ Brahmin Vamana oppressed Dravidian Dalit king and overthrew his rule.

Truth: While the adjectives have been dealt with separately, let us see what the image of Mahabali kneeling down in front of Vamana with raised foot represents. Mahabali kneels down to receive Thiruvadi Diksha from Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is an auspicious way of initiation received by a shishya (disciple) from the guru (teacher). Through this, Mahabali’s ignorance and ego was removed and helped him attain mukti (salvation). Attaining salvation is not oppression but a rise in the status of the individual being to a higher level of consciousness. But a sick mind chooses to see what it wants to see.

The story also carries with it the moral of not underestimating someone who is physically challenged.

Propaganda #5: Vamana Jayanti is a Hindutva construct devised by the RSS

Truth: For centuries and millennia, Vamana Jayanti has been celebrated across India. The Vamana Murti temple in Thrikkara, Kochi is where the Onam festival starts as it is believed that Mahabali comes to visit his people every year starting with the worship of Lord Vamana at this temple. The Ulagalandha Perumal temple in Kanchipuram and Thirukovilur in Vizhupuram celebrates Vamana Jayanti. Many temples in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, mark Vamana Jayanti.

Propaganda #6: Onam is a symbol of sustained resistance

Truth: As mentioned before, it is believed that Mahabali returns from Sutala (the auspicious higher plane) to the earth plane every year to visit the homes of his people. It is to mark his arrival and welcome him that Malayalees decorate their houses with poo-kolam. This is also done in remembrance of Raja Kulasekhara Azhvar who introduced Thiruvonam festival in the erstwhile Chera Nadu.

While it is too much to expect from the hollow heads that misrepresents and falsify history (or mythology if they want to call it that way), the least that they can do is not expose their cultural illiteracy in the name of bringing in ‘conflict perspective’.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu calls for special care for the elderly during the pandemic

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has stressed on the need for a strong remedial system to address the problems faced by the elderly. He also said the health system needs to be restructured to meet their needs.

In this regard, Venkaiah Naidu said on his Facebook page on Sunday. He started by telling the story of Lord Vinayaka and Lord Murugan who were asked to go around the world in the shortest time and win the ‘Gnana Pazham’. While Lord Murugan set about on his peacock, Lord Vinayaka went around his parents and won the fruit.

“I feel so sad when I know about incidents like neglecting, abandoning and disrespecting elders. The way a society treats their elders reflects their culture and values”, he said.

“The elderly are a repository of knowledge and wisdom. They should be treated with respect, love, attention and dignity in their final days. Caring for adults is a sacred duty of all, including young people. Parents need to teach their children the steps to ensure that adults live comfortable, happy, and fulfilling lives. Old age homes not only highlight changes in society but also sadly reflect the decline of family values. Cultural values and traditions are preserved in the joint family system. We leave these for generations. But today’s lifestyle plays a major role in causing the worst effects.” the Vice President noted.

He also quoted some important facts from the Senior Population Status Report published by Indian Association of Parliament on Population and Development that he released last week. According to the report, the proportion of the elderly in the Indian population has been increasing. By 2050, 20% of the Indian population will be elderly. Most of the elderly in India live alone or depend on their children for their financial and emotional needs. Crisis in urban areas and small houses are the reasons why children leave their parents in their hometown.”

Mentioning the various schemes for the elderly  – Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana, Senior Citizens Welfare Fund and other social security schemes brought about by the government, he said that despite that the elderly face problems.

“We still see senior citizens facing great difficulties in accessing various services. Elderly people often stand for a long time in banks, government offices, buses and trains.”, Vice President Venkiah Naid said.

He emphasized that special care and attention be given to the elderly during the COVID19.

Even in the Parliament, few questions have been raised about the problems of the elderly.

He said a strong system was needed to address the grievances of the elderly in this situation. “Government officials and people need to focus on raising awareness on the issues related to adults. They need to introduce a strong complaints solving section to resolve the problems they are facing. There needs to be changes in the Indian health system to meet the health needs of adults, including insurance coverage.”, he said.

Veeralakshmi becomes the country’s first female ambulance driver

In a shattering of glass ceiling of sorts, Veeralakshmi from Tamil Nadu became the country’s first female ambulance driver and joined the force with the release of the new fleet of  “108” ambulances by the Tamil Nadu State Government.

Talking about this, Veeralakshmi, who now has the opportunity to work as a 108 ambulance driver, said that her dream of working as an ambulance driver for a long time has now come true. She also said that this gives her a lot of joy in addition to instilling hope amongst those who aspire to be like her.

Veeralakshmi hails from Bodinayakkanur in Theni district. She lives with her husband and two children in Tiruvottiyur in Chennai. She has been driving cars with her husband for quite some time now, but, becoming an ambulance driver has been something she has always dreamed of, she said.

UAE sends coronavirus aid to war-torn Syria

The UAE has sent medical aid to war-torn Syria as a goodwill gesture. The latter, which was already ravaged by war, is now falling to pieces due to the global pandemic and the recession.

Syria has been in loggerheads with UAE since 2011 when the civil war broke out in the country. Following a nine-year silence, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan spoke on the phone in March for the first time. The leaders from UAE have finally reached out to Syria and have sent assistance after this correspondence. The first load that got delivered on Monday contained medicine, ventilators and disinfectant.

Prince Mohammed took to Twitter and assured Assad of “the support of the UAE and its willingness to help the Syrian people” combat COVID-19. He has also added that the UAE will be assisting Syria in every which way possible to help the country out of the economic crisis. This comes after the reopening of the Syrian embassy in Damascus in 2018.

Syria has been coronavirus in the areas under its control. The country reported 2,703 cases of COVID-19 and 109 deaths until now. However, medics and residents say the real number of cases in the war-battered country is likely to be much higher.

First commercial flight launched from Israel to UAE

US Presidential Adviser Jared Kushner (C-L) and US National Security Adviser Robert OBrien (C-R) disembark from the the El Al's airliner, which is carrying a US-Israeli delegation to the UAE following a normalisation accord, upon landing on the tarmac on August 31, 2020, in the first-ever commercial flight from Israel to the UAE at the Abu Dhabi airport. - A US-Israeli delegation including White House advisor Jared Kushner took off on a historic first direct commercial flight from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi to mark the normalisation of ties between the Jewish state and the UAE. The first-ever commercial flight from Israel to the United Arab Emirates took flight on Monday after a pact that was signed to de-escalate the tensions between the two countries. The Boeing 737 which is to be flying through the Saudi Arabian skies is the first for the Israeli airline EI AI.

Notably, several top Trump administration officials had been on board this plane that flew from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi. It is said that these officials are escorting Israeli government personnel who are to be holding talks with their Saudi counter parts as a part of the mediation plan by the White House.

Previously, in the absence of access to the Emirates’ air space, it used to take 7 hours to reach the Israeli subcontinent. This has now been reduced to 3 hours. Due to the diplomatic talks that were brokered by the United States, the two countries are now in the talks of developing diplomatic relations.

While members of the public were not able to purchase a ticket for the historic journey, it meets the Federal Aviation Administration’s criteria for a commercial flight because some of those on board will be paying for their tickets. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it the “first-ever Israeli commercial flight” to the UAE, a characterization also used by the UAE’s Foreign Ministry.
