Scientists develop gold microstructure substrate with tunable wettability useful in water transportation & self-cleaning

Feature Image Courtesty: PIB

Scientists have developed a gold microstructure substrate with the ability to repel water as well as bubbles with tunable wettability, which can be used in designing microfluidic devices, biosensors and useful in water transportation and self-cleaning.

Wettability, or the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface, is an important property in surface and interface science. Its influence is seen in many biochemical processes, sensing, microfluidics, water transportation, self-cleaning, industrial processes. The tunable wettability results from tunability in surface energy of the substrate, which can be utilized to regulate the direction of flow in water transportation and self-cleaning applications.

According to the recent work published in ‘Journal of Applied Physics’, Dr. P. Viswanath and his group from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a substrate exhibiting morphological gradient that helps one to tune the wettability because of surface energy change. The morphological gradient in the substrate ranges from domes to elliptical holes.

Water and oil wetting studies at each position on the substrate revealed that wetting is tunable with morphology. The substrate showed hydrophobic nature, which gets magnified when coated with a self-assembled monolayer of octadecane thiol – a water-soluble sulfur compound with a carbon alkyl chain. The coating results in a reduction in surface energy, which in turn facilitates an enhancement in hydrophobic behaviour.

Underwater wettability investigations on the substrate showed that it mainly repelled bubbles and when functionalised with coating of octadecanethiol, it repels mainly oil. Ms. Brindhu Malani S, a research scholar working on this, pointed out that these studies would be useful in designing microfluidic devices, biosensors, and water transportation.

Amazon, Flipkart likely to be hit by India’s revision of foreign investment regulations

E-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart may be hurt as India is considering revising its foreign investment rules for e-commerce, amid increasing complaints from India’s bricks-and-mortar retailers. This move that could compel players, including Amazon.com Inc, to restructure their ties with a few major sellers in the market.

Complainants have, for years, accused Amazon and Walmart Inc-controlled Flipkart of creating complex structures to bypass federal rules. However, the the US companies deny these allegations. Domestic traders also see foreign e-commerce businesses as a threat to their livelihoods and accuse them of unfair business practices, like using steep discounts to rapidly target buyers. The companies deny they are acting unfairly.

India only permits foreign e-commerce players to operate as a marketplace to connect sellers and buyers. It prohibits foreign e-commerce companies from holding inventories of goods and directly selling them on their platforms. Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart were adversely hit in December 2018 when investment rule changes barred foreign e-commerce players from offering products from sellers in which they have an equity stake.

Currently, it is believed that the government is considering adjusting a few of the provisions, to prevent e-commerce players from offering products from sellers in which they have an indirect stake. The proposed changes, if approved, could hurt Amazon as it holds indirect equity stakes in two of its biggest online sellers in India.

Policy changes in 2018 affected India-US relations

The 2018 rules forced Amazon and Flipkart to rework their business structures. It also soured relations between India and the United States, as Washington said the policy change favoured local e-tailers over U.S. ones. India’s e-commerce retail market is estimated to grow from $30 billion in 2019 to a whopping $200 billion a year by 2026, according to the investment promotion agency Invest India. The COVID-19 pandemic also drove more shoppers online.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been critical of e-commerce companies. In the face of growing trader complaints and an antitrust investigation, Piyush Goyal last year said that Amazon was not doing a great favour to India by making fresh investments.

The government may also be considering changes that would effectively prohibit online sales by a seller who purchases goods from the e-commerce entity or its group firm, and then sells them on the entity’s websites. Under existing rules, a seller is free to buy up to 25% of its inventory from the e-commerce entity’s wholesale or another unit and then sell them on the e-commerce website.

A government of many firsts

For the past few months, USA has been making news for all the wrong reasons. The Presidential Election was muddled in controversy with claims of voting fraud by outgoing Republican President Donald Trump which culminated in the Capitol building siege by Trump’s supporters. The country that preached and championed democracy in other countries seemed to crumble under its own feet as anarchy took over the streets and annals of power. “Will he come to terms with the loss and gracefully leave office or stay put in the White House to be impeached dishonorably?”, this was the question in the minds of people across the world who have been hoping for a smooth and peaceful transition of power.

Though not smooth and peaceful, there will be a transition. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will be initiated into their offices today at the Inauguration Ceremony to be held at Washington D.C. Both of them, with one hand raised towards the sky and the other on the Bible will be swearing-in, commencing the next Democrat administration in the White House.

This administration will see many firsts in the country’s history. To start with, for the first time, there will be a woman in position of power in the White House. Here are some of the other firsts that this administration will see:

‘Desi’fied administration

This is the first US administration to feature the maximum number of Indian Americans in command and is a welcome change from the norm of having stiff-upper-lipped, highly opinionated, entitled White men. Some of the notable ones are:

Neera Tanden: Nominated as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Dr Vivek Murthy: Nominated as the US Surgeon General.

Vanita Gupta: Nominated as Associate Attorney General Department of Justice.

Uzra Zeya: Nominated under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights.

Mala Adiga: Appointed as Policy Director to the future First Lady Dr Jill Biden.

Garima Verma: Nominated as the Digital Director of the Office of the First Lady.

Sabrina Singh: Named as the First Lady’s Deputy Press Secretary.

Aisha Shah: Named as Partnership Manager at the White House Office of Digital Strategy.

Sameera Fazili: Will occupy the key position of Deputy Director at the US National Economic Council (NEC) in the White House.

Bharat Ramamurti: Nominated as the Deputy Director of the White House National Economic Council.

Gautam Raghavan: Nominated as Deputy Director in Office of Presidential Personnel.

Vinay Reddy: Named as Director of Speechwriting.

Vedant Patel: Nominated as Assistant Press Secretary to the President.

Sonia Aggarwal: Named Senior Advisor for Climate Policy and Innovation in the Office of the Domestic Climate Policy at the White House.

Vidur Sharma: Appointed as Policy Advisor for Testing for the White House Covid-19 Response Team.

Apart from them, three Indian-Americans have made their way to the crucial National Security Council of the White House, steering the country’s foreign policy and national security.

A Working FLOTUS

In addition to this, this is the first time that the country will have a First Lady who will be working. That’s right, FLOTUS Jill Biden is all set to keep her job, stepping away from the generally followed practice set forth by her predecessor, including the most recent Melania Trump, who had quit their jobs to support their partners.

But, this is no surprise. Jill had continued her teaching job, even whilst serving as the Second Lady of the United States for 8 years during the Obama administration. She unapologetically proclaimed in an interview about the need for the country to respect teachers, and how she will continue working and not be on call at all points of the day in the White House. This seems like a refreshing break from the mere cheerleading that the wives of the POTUS have been traditionally doing, and will serve as an inspiration to millions of women whose husbands are in public life.

This is also an important reminder of how, time and again. wives of Presidents, no matter how accomplished, have been expected to give up their careers, even highly lauded FLOTUSES like Michelle Obama to stand testament. Despite being an advocate of causes, the fact that their lives outside of the White House being nothing but that of a dutiful wife is something that is worth pondering about.

Kamala Harris and Douglas Emhoff

With Kamala Harris’ Vice Presidency, the United States for the first time will have a ‘Second Gentleman’ Douglas Emhoff. Douglas has resigned his job at Deloitte to support his wife in her new role.

What is surprising, and borderline sad about this is the fact that there are no provisions in the US Constitution that actually define a position called the Second Gentleman. Every lawmaker in the United States is breaking their heads as they try to figure out a job description that describes the duties of a Second Gentleman. It almost feels as though the founding fathers of the US Constitution conveniently assumed or rather omitted the possibility of a woman even contesting and winning an election that could make her the office bearer of the second most important position of the country. Who’s to say, they probably even assumed that in the event of that ever occurring, she would not be married for having been a woman in public life.

If the fact that the Vice President of this cabinet was female was not enough, what causes the eyebrows to raise even more is the fact that she is a woman of colour, born as the daughter of two immigrants, and is married to a Jewish white man. This makes Emhoff the first spouse of an American Vice President who is Jewish. Not to say that this has opened up an uncomfortable conversation for the citizens of a country that is mostly Christian and extremely prone to racial disparities and religion-based stigmatization.

The oldest POTUS

At 78, Joe Biden will become the 46th President Of The United States, the oldest person to have his hands over the nuke button. Joe Biden served as the Vice President during Barack Obama’s Presidency. He is the second Roman Catholic to hold the highest office after John. F. Kennedy.

With Americans remaining divided like never before, President Biden and Vice President Harris has a humongous task of building confidence among their non-supporters and taking everyone along with them in these challenging times. Will the ‘many firsts’ administration go beyond the optics? Only time will tell.

Former Modi cabinet minister’s donation to build new vigraha of Shri Rama rejected by Andhra government

In a vexatious and surprising move, the Andhra Pradesh Endowments department on January 16 rejected a donation of ₹1,01,116 for making a new vigraha (idol) of Lord Shri Rama to be placed in the Sri Kodanda Ramaswamy temple at Ramatheertham in Vizianagaram district.

The previous idol was damaged by unidentified miscreants some weeks ago.

The donation was offered by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Union Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju. Ashok had been sacked from the post of Chairman of three temples, including the Sri Kodanda Ramaswamy temple at Ramatheertham, which were founded by his family — the Vizianagaram royal family of Pusapati Rajus, for his failure to take steps to prevent the vandalism of the Lord Rama idol, according to a government memo.

The other two temples, where Ashok Gajapathi Rau was sacked, are the Sri Pyditalli Ammavari Devasthanam and a temple in Mandapalli of East Godavari district. The memo further said that Ashok “has failed to discharge his legitimate duties and address the issues relating to the security aspects of the temple and failed to take steps to prevent the vandalisation” of the idol at the Ramatheertham temple.

Ashok Gajapathi Raju had served as the Union Minister of Civil Aviation in the Narendra Modi cabinet until the TDP split from the  National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2018 over the issue of granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh. In March 2020, the Jagan Reddy-led government of Andhra Pradesh had also removed him as the chairperson of the Simhachalam Devasthanam Board and the MANSAS Trust.

“First, they unilaterally dismiss me as hereditary trustee/Chairman without as much as a notice in complete contravention of section 28. Now, they reject my offerings to the Lord as a representative of the founder family for the vigrahas”, Ashok tweeted over the Andhra Pradesh government’s decision.

IT dept raids 28 properties of Christian evangelist Paul Dhinakaran for alleged tax evasion

Searches are on at 28 properties of Christian tele-evangelist Paul Dhinakaran, the Chairman of Jesus Calls missionary organization.

The Income Tax department has raided the properties in connection with ‘Jesus Calls’ at Chennai, Coimbatore and other locations in Tamil Nadu. They also raided the Karuna Christian School which is affiliated to Jesus Calls.

The raids began on Wednesday (January 20) morning to check whether the organization was involved in evading tax based on complaints of tax evasion and foreign funding irregularities.

Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), a legal activists collective had earlier complained to the Income Tax department to probe Paul Dhinakaran’s immovable assets located all over the country and internationally.

The complaint had shed light on the anomalies in the Annual Returns filed and the contributions received by various NGOs operated by Paul Dhinakaran.

Paul Dhinakaran, son of D.G.S Dhinakaran, is a Christian pastor and heads the Jesus Calls missionary organization founded by his father. He is also the Chancellor of Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences located in Coimbatore district.

‘Revenge attack’ on cop for firing at anti-CAA rioters in 2019, six Muslim youth held

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar on Tuesday 19 January informed the press that the perpetrators behind the attack on a police constable had been apprehended.

“Six persons were arrested in connection to the assault of police constable Ganesh Kamath attached to Bunder police station on December 16 at Alake, New Chitra junction,” he said. “The arrested are Aneesh Ashraf (22), Abdul Khader Fahad (23) and Raheel (18), all residents of Kudroli, Sheik Mohammed Harris (31) from Bajpe, Mohammed Qaiz (24) from Tannirbhavi, and Mohammed Nawaz (30) from BC Road.”

Constable Kamath was on duty near New Chitra junction when an assailant attacked him with a sword.

“The gang is known as ‘Maya Gang’. Police constable Ganesh Kamath was a random target for the group as they wanted to avenge the anti-CAA protest firing which took place on December 19, 2019”, he added. The accused Mohammed Nawaz is a distant relative of the person who died in the firing incident.

Accused consumed drugs in prelude to attack

The accused are also believed to be involved in the illegal distribution and sale of drugs. Nawaz, who works at a medical store, was giving Schedule H drugs to Qaiz and distributing the drugs to others as well. The accused also consumed the drugs while committing the crime, according to police.

“The accused coordinated with another gang as well in planning the assault. The probe is on to know the involvement of the other gang. We will arrest them soon. One of the accused, Aneesh Ashraf, who has a criminal record, contacted Raheel who agreed to execute the crime by consuming the schedule H drugs,” Shashi Kumar further continued.

Schedule H drugs are prescribed by doctors to patients suffering from muscle spasms, insomnia, health issues related to old age, etc.

One of the accused, Mohammed Nawaz, also pretended to help the police and passed on certain misleading information to subvert the inquiry. The group originally planned to attack the police on December 19 last year, which marked the one year anniversary of the firing incident. But concerned over heightened security on that day, the group executed their plan on December 16.

DCP Hariram and DCP Vinay Goankar were also present at the media briefing.
