China blames India for torpedoing its vaccine in Bangladesh

China has blamed India for meddling in the trials for Chinese Covid-19 vaccine Sinovac that have been halted in Bangladesh last year. China said that India has torpedoed Beijing’s efforts to push its vaccine in Dhaka and ran an article in state mouthpiece The Global Times, outlined how Bangladesh rescinded its decision to allow Covid vaccine trials last October after a last-minute demand by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech that Dhaka co-fund the trials.

As per the article published in The Global Times, the trials, according to the agreement were sealed in July and were to start in August. As per the initial agreement, Bangladesh did not need to share the cost.

“But the clinical trials were delayed until October due to the Indian government allegedly meddling in the two sides’ cooperation during the period,” the report – one of the many that China’s tightly-controlled media has published to target vaccines made by India and western companies – said.

However, the trials scheduled in August had to be pushed back due to delay in approvals from Dhaka.

The company had, according to this letter seen by Hindustan Times, claimed that it had “reallocated our funds for the trial (in Bangladesh) to trials in other countries, since, at the time, we were uncertain about the ultimate approval of the trial in Bangladesh.”

Sinovac Biotech also claimed that it had requested the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), an organisation set up to accelerate the development of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases, to fund the trials in Bangladesh but this application was rejected.

Sinovac Biotech sprung a surprise on Bangladesh on 22 September, claiming that it would have to co-fund the vaccine trial since the company had reallocated funds(Sourced)

“However, we are working on plans to partially rectify the funding situation by the end of October-early November, though we will still require co-funding to complete the entire trial in Bangladesh,” the company said in its letter to Bangladesh’s health minister Zahid Maleque.

“We are not co-funding the trial. That was not in the agreement. They never asked for money when they approached us… As per agreement, they’ll bear all expenses of the trial, they’ll give us 110,000 free vaccines and they’ll share the technology so that our pharmaceutical companies can make the vaccine,” the minister told Reuters on 13 October.

What has now caused problems for China is that India has sent a gift of two million doses of Covishield vaccine to Dhaka on January 21 and at the same time managed to get a commercial contract of 30 million doses with the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

India’s humanitarian outreach to all its neighbours during this pandemic is seen as a direct challenge over China’s influence in the region which has over the years used debt-trap strategy to gain foothold in many Asian countries.

The Muslim leader who is known for extending his support to the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, was participating at a Republic Day celebration at Moonjikkal in Kodaikanal on January 26. At that time, fanatics belonging to the fringe outfit NTK and Islamist fundamentalist organization TMMK came armed in vehicles and pelted stones and slippers at Vellore Ibrahim.

His personal security officer (PSO) was injured in the head during the attack who is now having stitches. Ibrahim and other policemen who tried to protect the leader were also injured.

The attackers who had created ruckus in the road were later taken to a hall. The Jamaat members in Kodaikanal condemned the attack on the Muslim leader.

The attack seems to have been planned well in advance as many Facebook posts with Muslim names had posted the previous day about carrying out a ‘neat incident’.

One user named “Sheikh Abdullah Kodai” had posted calling Muslims to assemble at Moonjikkal at 11 AM on January 26 to carry out the attack on Vellore Ibrahim.

RaGa lies through his teeth about Jallikattu, says Congress never banned the sport

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in an exclusive interview to a private Tamil news channel lied without an iota of hesitation stating that the then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government headed by the Congress never banned Jallikattu.

The Wayanad MP was answering to a question posed regarding Jallikattu and the UPA government’s ban on the sport.

“One might ask.. you speak about Jallikattu, you take witness that sport, but the very sport was banned during the UPA time”, the interviewer asks to which Rahul Gandhi shakes his head sideways and says “We didn’t ban it. One of our ministers commented on it. But we did not ban Jallikattu.”

He further goes on to look at people behind the camera to seek validation and says “We did not ban Jallikattu”.

The interviewer points out to the fact that Dr. Manmohan Singh in a letter called it a cruel sport to which Rahul Gandhi goes on to narrate how he saw Jallikattu with his own eyes where there was protection for the bull and people.

“I did not see the so-called brutality of Jallikattu. I did not see it.” he said adding that if at all there exists a danger it is to the people and not the bull.

He also said that there is a possibility of harming the bull if Jallikattu is conducted without proper infrastructure and support. “So, the answer is to make the sport safe. Make the sport safe for the bull, make the sport safe for the people and enjoy the sport and drama in respecting both the bull and the people.”, Rahul Gandhi said evading the question on Dr. Manmohan Singh’s letter against Jallikattu.

The interviewer further probed stating that the then Minister of Environment had brought the bull under the list of animals prohibited from exhibition to which Rahul said “I am not of the view where every single person in the Congress party has to have the same view on something. I have my view. I represent a big chunk of the ideas of the Congress party. I think that Jallikattu can be done safely, humanely, in a pleasant way. So I don’t see the problem”.

It is to be noted that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) showed great interest in banning Jallikattu. In fact, on December 15, 2015, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote a letter to the Human Society International, an organization similar to PETA, voicing his strong opposition to Jallikattu. Not only did he say that this most ‘horrible’ form of entertainment be not promoted, but he also wished the organization success in their goal of banning it.

Many United Progressive Alliance ministers, including Jairam Ramesh, called it a barbaric sport.  In fact, it was during his stint as the Environment Minister that he banned Jallikattu by adding bull to the list of animals prohibited for ‘performance’. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, another spokesperson of the Congress, appeared as an advocate for the petitioners seeking a ban on Jallikattu, and openly stated that Jallikattu was a ‘horrible’ sport.

Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor back in 2015 called Jallikattu as cruel.

Former Congress Minister Jayanthi Natarajan too speaking to a Tamil TV channel conceded that Congress was responsible for Jallikattu ban.

In January 2017, when the pro-Jallikattu protests was taking the state by storm, National Herald, the mouthpiece of the Congress, published an article criticizing the protests in a slanderous manner saying that Tamil men used the protests to ‘assert their manhood’ after feeling emasculated under the iron-fist rule of later former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

“Subsidised lands belonging to the temples should be handed over to priests”: VHP TN

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has demanded that the subsidized lands belonging to temples in Tamil Nadu be reclaimed and handed over to the temple priests and that all temples be provided with free electricity.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Dharmapuri District Administrators General Committee meeting was held at Nanda Alli Mariamman Temple premises on Monday and was chaired by District Chairman Udayamoorthy. Also present were District Secretary Sivakumar and Priests Council Administrator Rajamani.

Various resolutions were passed at this meeting. The most important of them was the resolution that the lands that were granted to the temples should be reclaimed and handed over to the respective temple priests. The resolution also passed that the government should take steps to provide free electricity to the temple. The resolution passed at the meeting called for a one-time pooja program in all temples in Tamil Nadu and for proper action to be taken to curb the theft of idols from temples.

In the past, when kings donated lands to the temples the tenants provided fruits, vegetables and grains including paddy in exchange. This helped the livelihood of the temple priests as well. But now the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department pays ₹50 and ₹100, leaving the priests without income.

Similarly, many temples in rural areas are not funded by the HR&CE department. The temples where the deity was worshipped by the Alvars and Nayanmars, do not even have the means to do puja for one period (kaalam). There is a growing demand for the temples to be liberated from government control and handed over to locals and hereditary temple administrators.

Rajdeep Sardesai earns the ire of netizens for peddling fake news during R-day riots, post-mortem confirms farmer was NOT shot

While the anti-farm laws protests turned violent and the ensuing riots engulfed the national capital on what was supposed to be a happy and solemn occasion, many prominent journalists, civil society members and public intellectuals were goading the rioters and spreading misinformation. Among these was controversial India Today journalist Rajdeep Sardesai.

Sardesai tweeted that a rioting farmer had died due to police firing. Fully aware of how his tweet could potentially affect the law and order situation in the national capital, Sardesai tweeted, “One person, 45-year-old Navneet killed allegedly in police firing at ITO. Farmers tell me: the ‘sacrifice’ will not go in vain”, along with a photograph of the body covered in the Indian tricolour; the same tricolour that the protesting farmers had disrespected.

A screenshot of the tweet that was later deleted by Rajdeep Sardesai

However, a report by Rajdeep’s own news network had contradicted his tweet.

The farmer’s death was due to an accident of his own making. He was attempting to dislodge the police barricades on Delhi’s DDU Marg by ramming his tractor onto them head-on, when his tractor overturned. This fact about the farmer’s death is also borne by CCTV footage of the incident.

Post-mortem examinations have further confirmed this.

Admittedly, netizens are angry at Sardesai for spreading fake news. Several netizens are calling for charges to be brought against the journalist for his irresponsible journalism.

While Rajdeep Sardesai later deleted his tweet, he had, however, spread the dangerous narrative on television, when he added extra masala to the news on India Today.

Sardesai even received a rebuke from Mahima Shastri, granddaughter of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri, for his thoughtless comment provoking enmity between farmers and security forces.

TN in tension: Sasikala released, Jayalalithaa memorial inaugrated on the same day

An air of tension prevails over Tamil Nadu, as the memorial dedicated to former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Wednesday (January 27). This coincided with the release of V K Sasikala, the former aide to Jayalalithaa and former general secretary of the AIADMK. It is important to note that her release comes just months before the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

Sasikala was formally released from the central jail in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara after jail officials wearing PPE kits completed the formalities at the hospital. But, she will be spending a few more days at the Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, as she was recently diagnosed with COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the new memorial for Jayalalithaa has been opened to the public by the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. This memorial has been constructed near the MGR Memorial in the Marina beach and is said to have state of the art amenities.

Since this was scheduled on the same day as the release of Sasikala, there was a looming uncertainty about a potential shift in power dynamics that could happen following her release. While the AIADMK led by CM Palaniswami and Deputy CM O. Panneerselvam have stated that Sasikala’s release would not have any impact on the ground, it is expected that at least a ripple would be created in the party. It is expected that Sasikala will be joining the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), which was founded as a separate party by Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran.

India will be the only major economy to witness a double-digit growth

Indian Economy In Robust Spot Globally In 2025 With High Frequency Indicators Picking Up Growth

As India celebrated its 72nd Republic Day, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that India’s economic growth will surpass all the major global economies in the next fiscal year, reports Economic Times.

According to the IMF, India is the only country expected to witness a double-digit growth of 11.5 per cent next year. It is projected that India will carry forward the trend in the financial year of 2023 and the Indian economy is expected to witness a 6.8 per cent rise, which will be the highest among all major economies, according to the IMF.

The latest forecast by the IMF is an upward revision on the IMF’s earlier projections that estimated the Indian economy to grow at the rate of 8.8 per cent in FY22.

“Notable revisions to the forecast include the one for India (2.7 percentage points for 2021 [FY22]), reflecting carryover from a stronger-than-expected recovery in 2020 after lockdowns were eased,” the IMF said.

The IMF in its World Economic Outlook (WEO) report has also said that the policy support and vaccines are expected to lift economic activity across the world.

Microsoft sees growth in Azure cloud computing and xbox

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Microsoft Corp on Tuesday (January 26) reported that its Azure cloud computing services grew 50 per cent. This has been attributed because of the accelerated switch to cloud-based computing, benefiting Microsoft and rivals such as Amazon.com Inc’s cloud unit and Alphabet Inc’s Google Cloud.

The second quarter saw the business grow after the software maker’s investment on working and learning from home, reports Hindustan Times.

The company’s shares rose 5 per cent in extended trading after gaining about 41 per cent in 2020 as COVID-19 shifted computing to areas where the software maker has bet big.

“This was really driven by continued customer demand, with stronger-than-expected consumption as customers have increased their focus on digital transformation,” Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood told Reuters in an interview.

It also saw a surprise recovery and growth in sales on the LinkedIn professional social network and navigated a chip shortage that had threatened to hold back its Xbox business.

In November last year, Microsoft released two new Xbox consoles, but the hardware proved difficult to find due to a global semiconductor shortage contributing to tight stocks. However, Xbox hardware sales were up 86% despite the shortages and, as per analysts, the growth is likely to continue as the older models are also contributing to sales.

“Demand still outpaces supply, and we do expect that to continue,” Hood said. “The team did a nice job of getting consoles, both of this newest generation as well as continuing to sell the older generation, which provides a great value for gamers.”

Microsoft’s overall revenue rose to $43.08 billion in the second quarter ended December 31, from $36.91 billion a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates of $40.18 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.
