18-year-old teen entrepreneur from Bengaluru invents detection mechanism for early signs of oral cancer

18-year-old Nikhiya Shamsher has become one of the youngest entrepreneurs in the world to have made a landmark achievement in the field of Cancer detection. She has invented a device decorate in the early detection of oral cancer.

“As it turns out, one of the biggest reasons for this [high mortality rate] is the late diagnosis,” the now-18-year-old who graduated from Greenwood High International School, Bengaluru was quoted saying in the Forbes India. Due to the late diagnosis, people not only go through a lot of physical stress but also a lot of emotional and financial stress.

When she was 14 years old, Nikhiya’s visit to a hospital’s pediatric ward as a part of a project called ‘Compassionate Clowns’ brought into light the high mortality rate that oral cancer had in India. This led her to start researching a potential cure or a detection mechanism.

The result of her research from when she was in class 9 gave birth to Quitpuff, a point of care diagnostic device that could help in the early detection of oral precancer and cancer. This device is a bottle with a reagent in it. The patient is expected to spit in it, and when it is heated, the biomarker changes colour in 15 minutes which can then be compared using a colour chart. It costs just ₹38 and is a cost-effective solution.

“It is a simple principle, it detects a biomarker present in the saliva, and changes colour. The more the biomarker, the darker the colour will be, which means the higher the risk of developing oral cancer,” she explains.

However, Quitpuff does not currently have the capability to detect cancer. It merely tells you whether or not you have the possibility of getting affected by oral cancer.

Pakistan gives green signal for chemical castration of rape convicts ‘with consent’

After a huge outcry against the victim-blaming that has been going on in Pakistan in connection with sexual harassment victims, the country’s government has now passed a lot that allows chemical castration of convicted habitual rapists. This was passed on Tuesday after President Arif Alvi passed an anti-rape ordinance. The chemical castration punishment is to be given subject to the consent of the convict.

The new law aims at ensuring that the verdict for rape cases against women and children is fast-tracked. It also provides for the government to establish special courts all over the country for this purpose.

In addition to this, a countrywide database of sexual offenders is also to be established. However, the identities of the victims are not to be disclosed.

The ordinance followed after Prime Minister Imran Khan announced was under public pressure to bring strict laws to deal with the rising rape incidents in Pakistan. Recently in September, a woman who was forced to get out of the car after she ran out of fuel was raped in presence of her minor children. The two culprits involved in the crime were arrested and are under trial.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be coming to India to attend the 2021 Republic Day parade of India as the Chief Guest. This marks a significant paradigm shift in Indo -Britain relations especially following Brexit.

“I am absolutely delighted to be visiting India next year at the start of an exciting year for Global Britain, and look forward to delivering the quantum leap in our bilateral relationship that Prime Minister Modi and I have pledged to achieve,” the British Prime Minister said.

“As a key player in the Indo-Pacific region, India is an increasingly indispensable partner for the United Kingdom as we work to boost jobs and growth, confront shared threats to our security and protect our planet,” he added.

Set back for Uddhav Thackeray, Bombay HC grants stay in allotment of disputed Kanjurmarg land for metro car shed

In a major embarrassment for the Uddhav Thackeray led by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, the Bombay High Court has granted an interim stay on the allotment of 102 acres of saltpan land at Kanjurmarg for the metro car shed, Mumbai Mirror reports.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government was looking to construct a consolidated car shed at Kanjurmarg for lines 3, 4, 4A and 6 and now the court will decide the title rights over the disputed land.

Former CM of Maharastra in his tweet said, “Government should keep its ego aside and start Metro CarShed work at Aarey immediately. It is not about who is winning, we want victory of Mumbaikars!”

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as of now has been asked to maintain the status quo.

When Uddhav Thackeray became CM of Maharashtra, there was a huge uproar over the construction of car shed in Aarey milk colony, a suburban in Goregaon. It became a matter of ego and plans were made to shift the car shed project to Kanjurmarg away from Aarey milk colony over the protests of by ‘environmental activists’.

This led the Union government filing a petition against the decision in the High Court though cabinet minister Aditya Thackeray had stated that the revenue records show that the land allotted by the collector to MMRDA for the car depot belongs to the state of Maharashtra.

“This land is crucial for Metro Line 6, 4 and 14, apart from 3, as it will save almost ₹5500 crores of government and be a nodal point for 1 crore citizens,” Thackeray said.

“Once DMK comes to power, first priority will be given to party cadres, only after them public” Dharmapuri DMK MP says

DMK MP Senthilkumar while addressing party rally on Wednesday (December 16) said that, first priority will be given to party cadres in all schemes and loan waivers, if the party comes to power in 2021.

The DMK MP was speaking at a rally at Thoolisatti Eri near Marandahalli in Dharmapuri district as part of the party’s campaign trail for the 2021 Assembly elections ‘Vidiyalai Noki Stalinin Kural’ (Stalin’s Voice Towards Dawn).

He said “Those wearing black-red (DMK colours) bordered veshti will be given the first priority. Be it any loan waivers or concessions, first priority will be given to party cadres and executives. Only after them, will it be given to public and others”.

These remarks of the DMK MP has now gone viral on social media and earning the condemnation of the public.

Sethilkumar, the DMK MP from Dharmapuri, is known for getting into trouble because of his own words, putting himself and his party in embarrassing situations.

Earlier, he had tried to mess with former IPS officer and BJP Tamil Nadu Vice President K. Annamalai but shot himself in the foot. Prior to that he had called Annamalai for a debate but absconded citing excuses putting both him and the DMK in damage control mode.

China, an expanding balloon that will implode one day

Africa, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand. Wondering why these countries have been listed? This is because they have all turned into locations on China’s Monopoly board. These countries are the metaphorical equivalent of the King’s Cross Station on China’s conquest for global dominance. China is on its way to becoming the Britain of the 21st century, as its new-age colonialistic aspirations have become cleverly camouflaged under the facade of it being a ‘developmental partner’. The actual truth, however, points in the direction of its predatorial intentions.

In short, China seeks to do the metaphorical equivalent of trying to rot the dying beast from the inside, which, in this case, refers to the crumbling economies of its so-called partner countries. It aims to achieve this by means of its newly diversified expansionism policy. China has been trying to manipulate the global narrative, with Beijing linked media corporations peddling the drug which is China, skillfully wrapped in the wrapping paper that is financial stability and development in Belt and Road Investment (BRI) countries, that China has vested interests in.

China and its 3 ‘I’s

China has been conducting outreach campaigns globally, tapping into every resource that is possible, in its path to becoming a global superpower, and in its conquest to gaining a global monopoly. It is trying to accomplish this by means of its 3 I’s:

  • Influence
  • Interference
  • Investment

Influence

China’s crafty manipulation of the narrative is yet another cause of concern. What is a lesser-known fact to the rest of the world is that several countries’ media outlets like that of Thailand’s have signed agreements to exert the Chinese influence on their citizens. They even have direct connections with Xinhua, China’s national news agency.

In addition to this, China is conducting media outreach programmes on every continent, making sure that China’s name is firmly plastered in the hearts and minds of every citizen of every country.

Interference

China has positioned its members in top positions all over the world. So, it goes without saying that it has the say in major world decisions. The recent data leak incident was one of the biggest revelations into how much of a grip China has been having on the rest of the world’s private data. Furthermore, Confucius Institutes have sprouted up more than ever on several parts of the country. While these are public educational partnerships between colleges and universities in China and colleges and universities in other countries, the partnerships are funded and arranged in part by Hanban which is itself affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Investment

Beijing is currently holding major investments in 60 countries. This roughly accounts for 60% of the world population and 30% of the world’s GDP. Between 2013 and 2018, China invested nearly $614 billion in BRI countries. Morgan Stanley predicts that Chinese investment to touch $1.3 trillion in the next 10 years. China’s investments in Africa scream shadows of colonialism, as this was this exact same concept that the British Raj used when they laid railroads in India and invested in India’s minefields, only to reap those benefits for their own. While the British of the 20th century in India did this in the pretext of civilisation, present-day China is doing this in the name of developmental aid.

Adding on to the nightmare that doesn’t seem to end is the fact that China also silences those that have spoken against these actions in every which way possible. For instance, Malaysian former Prime Minister had warned China’s involvement may have colonialism like effects; the same person later got sold out to China and starting singing a different tune. If all else fails, China has the perfect fall-back mechanism: the debt trap. It uses the Messiah principle to clearly trap the countries until they get engulfed by Stockholm syndrome

Trouble brewing at home base

This is not to say that all is well at the home pavilion. On the contrary, China’s coffers are quickly draining, as its increasing population is becoming more and more difficult to feed with every coming day.

Recently, the news of China buying rice from India for the first time in 30 years made the headlines. While this might come as a surprise, what is not quite as surprising is the fact that rice is the staple food for two-thirds of the country’s population. For a country that is being played by trade wars, locust attacks, and the pandemic, it might seem to the untrained eye that the country is draining is coffers to feed its citizens. What seems to sell that story more is the fact that the country’s President Xi Jinping’s Operation Empty Plate, which is a public campaign to control food wastage. While this has been going on at one end of the spectrum, tabloids in the country have been vehemently denying the crisis. They have been overselling the actual harvest that has been going on in the country, while in actuality, China is buying broken rice from India at a range of several thousand tonnes at a price of $300 per tonne.

It is earning the wrath of its own people – be it in Xinhua for its xenophobic policies against the Uyghur Muslims or in Hong Kong or or in Taiwan or in mainland China by industrial workers. Trouble has been brewing for a while and thanks to the iron screen of the typical Communist regime, nothing comes out.

This means that in China’s pursuit of global domination, it has refused to look at more pressing issues back home, as the entire country runs rampant with corruption, unemployment and hunger. A day will come when it will have to answer to both its people and the rest of the world. Afterall, an expanding balloon cannot keep growing in size for long.

Tender for CMRL floated to hire specialists in horticulture and landscape

A tender has been floated by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to hire specialists in horticulture and landscape to decorate the medians and provide a green remodelling to the first phase of the metro’s extension corridor in the northern part of the city.

“Plants such as ficus, palm cycas are being considered. Light-loving and shade-loving plant species are being proposed too,” officials were quoted by the New Indian Express. The phase-1 corridor is 9 km long with an elevation of 6.6 km whereas it goes 2.4 km to the underground.

Husk along with coco peat and vermicompost will be combined with the sand in the medians to ensure good health of the plants.

As per the tender, the contractor will have to bear the cost of guaranteeing sufficient water for the plants over the course of the next two years. There are also plans for possible plans for the expansion of other medians too and the possibility of incorporating vertical gardens as the construction of the project nears its completion.

Doesn’t bode well for society, says Sadhguru, on rising number of housewives committing suicide

Responding to an observation on the rising number of Indian housewives committing suicide each year, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev Founder of Isha Foundation said that the trend “doesn’t bode well for society.” Sadhguru was referring to a post by Shamika Ravi, Director of Research at Brookings India who highlighted the phenomenon on Twitter.

“Twice as many housewives commit suicide as compared to farmers. Who will speak for them?” Ms. Ravi, who is a former member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, posted on her handle.

Sadhguru, who has spoken about the issue of people taking their own lives at several forums observed that “A Woman is the fulcrum of the family unit.” Sadhguru has often spoken about the need to create a gentler planet that allows the feminine to flourish. “Doesn’t bode well for society that women of the house are taking their own lives; will destabilize the foundations of society. Our Inner Wellbeing must become our priority- vital in ensuring the wellbeing of those around us,” Sadhguru wrote in his comment on Ms. Ravi’s post.

A 2018 report from India’s National Crime Records Bureau states that 63 housewives killed themselves every day that year. It is estimated that more than 20,000 housewives have killed themselves every year since 2001. This number is second only to the number of daily wage earners who killed themselves for various socioeconomic reasons including poverty, loss of livelihood and agrarian distress.
