Home Minister launches series of schemes in Manipur

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated several development projects in Manipur on Sunday. The Home Minister inaugurated the e-office and Thoubal Multipurpose Project (Thoubal Dam) in Imphal through virtual mode. He also laid the foundation stone of seven major development projects, including the Churachandpur Medical College, IT-SEZ at Mantripukhri, Manipur Bhawan in Dwarka, New Delhi and the Integrated Command and Control Center at Imphal. Union Minister for Development of North-Eastern Region, Dr Jitendra Singh, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on this occasion, Home Minister Amit Shah said this day marks an important milestone in the developmental journey of Manipur started under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today many important projects are being started in a single day, including a Medical College at Churachandpur, IIIT and IT-SEZ at Mantripukhri, which will serve as a benchmark for the entire North East. Home Minister Shah said the State Police Headquarters and Smart City Integrated Center at Imphal will help in advancing Smart Governance. Home Minister Shah said the IIIT and IT-SEZ will connect the youth of Manipur with the world. After the creation of IT-SEZ, the GDP of Manipur will increase by Rs 4,600 crore annually and there will be employment generation for 44,000 people. With the establishment of the medical college, the youth of Manipur will come out as doctors and the health system of the state will be strengthened.

Rahul Gandhi says “arrivederci”, flies off to Italy ahead of party’s Foundation Day

rahul gandhi Indian democracy

On the eve of Congress party’s foundation day, youth leader Rahul Gandhi has flown off to Milan in Italy reportedly in a Qatar airlines flight, for a ‘short personal visit.

AICC spokesman Randeep Surjewala, as quoted by PTI, said, “Rahul Gandhi has left for a short personal visit abroad and will be away for a few days”.

In an article published in ThePrint, since 2015, Rahul Gandhi has travelled abroad at least 247 times — an average 62 trips in a year, which amounts to five a month.

Gandhi, who had led the opposition parties to protest against the farm bill has again left the country just a few days after he met President Ram Nath Kovind where he and two different opposition delegations asked for the revocation of the three recently passed farm legislation.

Rahul Gandhi has a very poor track record in attending parliament and asking questions. Just a while back the Congress leader missed the debates in the parliament over the agricultural laws along with Sonia Gandhi citing the latter’s health issues.

In 2019, Rahul Gandhi had lost his seat in Amethi constituency to BJPs Smrithi Irani. This seat was party crown jewel and a short while later he left far foreign trip to an undisclosed location and for an undisclosed reason.

He even called Prime Minister Narendra Modi “an incompetent man” and recently quipped, “Democracy…. which country are you talking about? There is no democracy in India. It is in your imagination but not in reality.

The serially absent leader also had sent out a tweet quoting a famous poem written by poet Dwarika Prasad Maheshwari which is about never quitting no matter how adverse the situation or opponent it.

Soon after the news broke, keywords like Italy and Milan became of the top trends on Twitter.

Also, just a few days ago party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said that 99.99 per cent of Congressmen still think Rahul Gandhi to be the right person to lead the party amid dissent by senior leaders demanding an organizational overhaul of the party.

Vladimir Putin to receive the country’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine

Russia launched a voluntary vaccination programme of Russia-made Sputnik V vaccine earlier in December, starting with the most vulnerable groups in Moscow. President Vladimir Putin is to receive the Sputnik V vaccine against the coronavirus, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a Russian state TV channel on Sunday.

“He said he will be vaccinated, he made this decision and was waiting until all formalities are completed,” the spokesman was quoted as saying to Rossiya 1 TV Channel on its website.

People over the age of 60 may begin to apply for shots on Monday, Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his website on Sunday, the day after the Russian health ministry said the vaccine was approved for use by elderly people after a separate trial.

Putin, 68, had said earlier that Sputnik V was effective and safe, seeing no reason for people not to be vaccinated, adding he was waiting until it became available. Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak in Russia, Putin has mainly worked remotely, held meetings via videolink and has limited travel. In August he said one of his daughters had taken part in the clinical trial of the vaccine and felt well afterwards.

Daylight robbery in Kodaikanal: Police and men claiming to be from health dept harass tourists, take fines (bribes) citing absurd reasons

Tourists arriving at Kodaikanal complain that they are being made to put up with opaque rules and harassed to pay hefty bribes to enter the town.

Kodaikanal, the pretty hill station nestled in the fringes of Western Ghats in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing a steady surge of tourists from across the country ever since the lockdown norms were released.

But many have complained that they were subjected to harassment by police constables and men pretending to be from health department, who along with some youth (most likely home guards) cordon off vehicles in the name of checking e-pass and take bribes.

A tourist from Kerala who had come to spend Christmas at the hills said that they were made to pay fine despite having a valid e-pass. Another tourist with a valid e-pass was made to pay ₹500 as ‘social distancing charge’.

Police Constable, ‘Health Department Official’ and youth gang cordoning off vehicles

The police constables and ‘department officials’ primarily target youngsters, people of other states and those vehicles that are not of Tamil Nadu registration. They ask them for e-pass and if they do have one, they demand ‘fine’ to be paid to enter the hill station with the amount ranging anywhere between ₹1000 – ₹5000. If not paid, they are called into a shady room and harassed further. Tourists from other states who refuse to pay fine are asked to stay in 20 days quarantine.

The main person supposedly an health department official coordinating

Even those tourists belonging to the state are not spared. A tourist from Trichy who wished to remain unidentified said that the police and men claiming to be from the health department seized the liquor he had purchased at a TASMAC Elite outlet in Trichy. “There is no rule that prohibits liquor purchased from a registered TASMAC outlet to be carried anywhere within the state. Even if a new rule was promulgated, there is no mention of it anywhere. No signboards exists in the place that says ‘liquor purchased from outside Kodaikanal would not be allowed’. This is just complete fraud. Whatever is going on here in the name of ‘checking is just sheer harassment and illegal.”, said the tourist.

He said that the police had asked him to deposit his liquor at the check-post and collect it while returning back. When asked for a receipt or acknowledgement, the police constable refused to give one stating that it might ‘cost his job’. On the day of his return, the tourist was told that the liquor had been submitted to the DSP’s office.

The issue has been reported in Malayalam media as many tourists from Kerala had raised concerns about the daylight robbery happening in the name of checking.

Many have also urged the Sub-Collector of Kodaikanal Sivaguru Prabakaran IAS to take action against the perpetrators.

Karnataka: ASHA worker gives advice to wife of corona-infected, gets assaulted

An Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker was allegedly assaulted by the wife of a COVID-19 infected person.

On December 21, Rajeevi BS had gone to the house of a coronavirus-infected individual in Kutrupdy village, Kadaba Taluk in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district. She was collecting the details of the people with whom the infected individual had come into contact, as part of her job following up on the contact-tracing of infected people. While doing so, the ASHA worker noticed several relatives visiting the house of the infected person. Shocked, she advised the infected person’s family members not to allow visitors and to maintain social distancing guidelines.

Enraged over this advice, the infected person’s wife assaulted Rajeevi with a broom.

Dakshina Kannada District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy said that a case had been registered against the assailant in the jurisdictional police station.

Kannur Airport staffer fired over Facebook post against Kerala CM

A staffer at the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) was dismissed from service allegedly over his Facebook post criticising the Kerala government.

Hailing the July Supreme Court verdict on the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in his post, KL Ramesh had lambasted the Kerala government and made some comments on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In the aftermath of the post, KIAL had sent him a show-cause notice and instituted an inquiry team to investigate the matter. However, Ramesh’s explanation in reply to the show-cause notice was found to be unsatisfactory. Subsequently, KIAL Managing Director V Thulasidas issued a termination order to Ramesh, who was at the time working in the Fire and Rescue Wing at the airport.

Several Facebook users too had raised objections against Ramesh’s comments, saying that he had insulted the Chief Minister in his Facebook post.

Muslim women who married Hindu men and changed religion seek police protection

In two separate cases, where Muslim women had married Hindu men in the Bareilly district of Utter Pradesh, police protection had to be given after they converted to Hinduism.

Both marriages took place in Bareilly’s Hafizganj and Bahedi area. In one case police called the families of both sides to settle the matter amicably. However, a case of abduction and robbery was filed in the Bahedi area by the family of the Muslim woman against the Hindu man she had married.

The woman’s family asked the local authority that the provisions of the new anti-conversion law be included in the FIR.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rohit Singh Sajwan, told reporters, “The couples, in Hafizganj and in the Bahedi area, are adults. In both the cases, we have considered the girl’s statement. In the Hafizganj case, the couple visited a police station and sought security. Families of both sides were called to the station and the matter was settled. The family members of the girl have accepted the marriage and no case was filed.”

Sajwan said, “We are following the high court’s direction which says that two consenting adults in a relationship have the right to live together without any interference from their families.”

Their marriage was solemnised on Thursday (December 24), in a temple in the Rithora area with members of a Hindu outfit who had come forward in support of the couple.

In the Bahedi area, the Muslim woman, 29, ‘eloped’ with a Hindu man and later she released a video saying that she got married on 4 September in a temple after converting to Hinduism and has alleged that her parents have threatened to kill her.

The women in the video could be heard saying that if anything happens to her, her parents will be held responsible.

Uttar Pradesh: Muslim family converts to Hinduism, seeks security after harassment from non-Hindus

A Muslim family in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh has converted to Hinduism of their own accord. The family claimed that they were inspired to become Hindus after an in-depth study of Vedic scripture. The “ghar-wapsi” was done by the performance of a Havan Yajna ritual and the chanting of mantras at an Arya Samaj Mandir.

Qasim Khan, the head of the family, said that he had married Anita, a Hindu woman, eight years ago. But they had both followed their respective religions. Over the past years, Qasim had been inspired by Hinduism and he converted to Hinduism along with his two children without any coercion. His return to his original religion was also prompted by the realization that his ancestors had been Hindus. He added that his ancestors were converted to Islam by force, and that it was wrong.

However, Qasim – who has also changed his name to Karmaveer Mahore Singh – said that he is facing harassment from certain non-Hindu communities. He has sought security from the district administration in light of these events.

The family resides at Shahzamal in Thana Dehli Gate area.

TNM’s eulogy on anti-Hindu bigot ‘Periyar’ ends as propaganda piece for DMK+, ‘poet’ quoted in article launches personal attack on those calling out fallacies

On December 24, The News Minute published an article about E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (known as ‘Periyar’ by his followers) remembering the Dravida Kazhagam leader on the occasion of his 47th death anniversary.

The article which starts as an eulogy quoting ‘writer-activist’ Meena Kandasamy, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) MP D. Ravikumar and DMK functionary Salma, ends up as a propaganda piece for the DMK in view of the coming Assembly elections.

In the article, Meena Kandasamy is quoted saying that ‘Periyar’ is ‘more relevant today than ever’. She claims that ‘Periyar’ stood for social justice and empowerment of women while adding that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat contended women’s education.

“We’ve Mohan Bhagwat of the RSS who contends education of women will lead to divorce and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who reckons women are incapable of being independent and left free. But, Periyar stood for emancipation and empowerment of women”, she was quoted saying in The News Minute article.

Salma, a DMK functionary active in the women’s wing resonates the same thoughts expressed by Meena Kandasamy and added that federalism and women’s rights were under threat in the present regime of the BJP.

It is to be noted that E.V. Ramasamy Naicker, who is hailed as a ‘champion of social justice’ commented back then that the price of clothing was rising exponentially because of Dalit women starting to wear jackets. He addressed Dr. Ambedkar as “an agent of the North Indian Brahminical Congress Party”. During the infamous Keezhvenmani incident on 25th December, 1968 when 44 Dalit labourers were burnt alive by Zamindars for demanding a raise in wages, Periyar refused to condemn the incident and instead said, “Labourers should simply accept the wages offered to them by the land-owners instead of demanding more than what they deserve”, thus completely ignoring the violent, casteist angle to the incident.

The article also notes that ‘Periyar’ left behind a rich legacy of Tamil and Dravidian identity while claiming that the Union Government was ‘imposing’ “Aryan languages” like Hindi and Sanskrit. However, these claims made in the article stand contrary to how ‘Periyar’ viewed Tamil language, Tamil literature, and Tamil society.

In an editorial article of Viduthalai dated October 11, 1967, Periyar called Tamil as a “kaatumiraandi mozhi”, meaning barbarian language. He wanted Tamil to be discarded at home and advocated the use of English as the medium of communication. He went to the extent of saying that ‘Tamil is a language that is not even useful for begging’.

Silappadikaram, the great Tamil epic written by Ilango Adigal and belonging to the ancient Sangam literature, was called by ‘Periyar’ as an Aryan propaganda tool. One of the finest and richest literature ever produced by mankind, he considered it to be a treasure of superstitions and slavery of women. While Thirukkural has been a revered work across the world, ‘Periyar’ called it “feces placed in a golden plate”.

Salma was also quoted saying that “Periyarism” would be added to school syllabus if the DMK comes to power. It is noteworthy to mention here that for long school textbooks of Tamil Nadu called ‘Periyar’ as the “Socrates of ‘South-East Asia”. It has been said, written and ingrained in the minds of people that Ramasamy Naicker was conferred with the title of “Socrates of South-East Asia” by the UNESCO. For more than 40 years, this lie has been peddled with several articles and research papers on EVR written based on this lie.

However, an email response from the UNESCO office in Delhi had confirmed that no such award/title was given to E.V. Ramasamy Naicker. Following this, the lie has now been removed from the new textbooks.

VCK MP Ravikumar is quoted saying that the BJP government in the Centre and the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu was ‘anti-science’ and ‘anti-knowledge’ citing that BJP leaders suggested everything from cow urine to pappad as remedies. While it is true that an Assam BJP MLA did suggest cow urine as cure for the Wuhan Virus, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, a civil servant turned politician had only launched the Bhabhi ji papad which like every other food business in the industry after the pandemic, came with claims of increasing immunity and not ‘cure’ corona virus disease.

On the other hand, the VCK MP was silent about its alliance partner DMK. Newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs from the DMK – Tiruchi Siva, Andhiyur Selvaraj and N.R. Elango skipped taking their oath in the month of July because it was ‘Aadi’ month. Aadi month according to Tamil calendar is considered inauspicious to start any endeavour.

Ravikumar also added that the ‘OBC reservation was only on paper’. However, it must be noted that the AIADMK government recently brought in 7.5% internal reservation for government school students in medical admissions through which 405 students benefitted this year alone based on the suggestion given by the then Health Minister JP Nadda. No OBC reservation in state-run educational institutions was scrapped by the BJP government.

The article concludes with an indirect appeal to vote for the DMK where it quotes Salma saying “it is the responsibility of the people of Tamil Nadu to see to it that the AIADMK supported by the BJP is defeated in the polls.”

This article was called out by ‘neutral’ political analyst Sumanth Raman for its fallacies. Responding to the tweet of the article posted by its author, Sumanth Raman questioned the claims made in the article and asked if whether the The News Minute does not verify facts before publishing.

To this, Meena Kandasamy called Sumanth Raman a ‘sombu’ (derogatory term denoting a supporter) of the BJP. It is pertinent to note here that Sumanth C Raman opposed the CAA 2019 and abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, the two landmark decisions of the Narendra Modi government.

She also goes on to make baseless claims about OBCs being denied 10,000 medical seats due to non implementation of quota.

In another series of tweets she calls Sumanth Raman a ‘mama’ to poke fun at his Brahmin origins and also addresses him singular.

DMK functionary Salma too took offence at Sumanth Raman’s tweet to which the latter asked what OBC reservation was cancelled as claimed by VCK MP Ravikumar and Meena Kandasamy.
