Cabinet approves export of Akash Missile System, creates committee to expedite exports

Under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiatives, India is growing in its capabilities of manufacturing a wide variety of defence platforms and missiles. Akash is an important missile in this regard, with over 96 percent indigenisation.

Akash is a Surface to Air Missile (SAM) with a range of 25 km. The missile was inducted in 2014 into the IAF and in 2015 into the Indian Army.

After its induction in the Services, interest has been shown in the Akash missile by many friendly nations during International Exhibitions/Def Expo/Aero India. The cabinet approval will facilitate Indian manufactures to participate in RFI/RFP issued by various countries.

So far, Indian defence exports comprised of mostly parts and components. The export of big platforms was minimal. This initiative of the cabinet would help the country to improve its defence products and make them globally competitive.

The export version of Akash will be different from the system currently deployed with the Indian Armed Forces.

Besides Akash, there is interest coming into other major platforms like Coastal Surveillance System, radars and air platforms. To provide faster approvals for export of such platforms, a committee comprising of Raksha Mantri, External Affairs Minister and National Security Advisor has been created.

This committee would authorise subsequent exports of major indigenous platforms to various countries. The Committee would also explore various available options, including the Government-to-Government route.

The Government of India intends to focus on exporting high-value defence platforms to achieve the target of 5 Billion USD worth of defence exports and to improve strategic relations with friendly foreign countries.

DMK’s unofficial brand ambassador and data fabricating ‘tech entrepreneur’ peddles fake news on farmer empowerment laws

Suresh Sambandam, the new found poster boy of the DMK who was recently caught peddling half-truths and lies, is at it once again. This time, the ‘tech entrepreneur’ has peddled blatant lies about the farmer empowerment laws.

Suresh on December 28 tweeted that the “farm bills infringes into state rights” and claimed that the laws “eliminate Minimum Support Price” (MSP) and “excludes key farm items from essential commodities”.

However, all these statement made by Suresh Sambandam are baseless and are in contradiction to the what the farm laws are.

Here is an explainer busting each and every claim made by the DMK sympathizer:

Claim 1:  MSP will be scrapped

Truth: Time and again, the Government of India has clarified that procurement through Minimum Support Price (MSP) will continue and  farmers can sell their produce at MSP rate.

In fact, in the ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS), Government of India continues to procure Kharif crops at MSP rates from farmers as per existing MSP Schemes.

Procurement has been going on smoothly across different states in India that includes Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala and Tamil Nadu to name a few. 462.88 LMT of paddy has been procured up to December 28 registering a 24.90% increase against the corresponding purchase of 370.57 LMT last year.

About 57.47 lakh farmers have already been benefitted from the ongoing procurement operations with MSP value of ₹87391.98 crore.

The Central Government, based on the proposal from the States, approved for the procurement of 51.66 LMT of Pulse and Oilseeds for the 2020 Kharif Marketing Season for the States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh under Price Support Scheme(PSS).

Claim 2: State rights will be infringed

Truth: The two bills that have been passed will not lay a finger on the State Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Acts as they are state Acts. The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 seeks to create more avenues for farmers to sell their produce. It will promote barrier-free inter-state and intra-state trade and commerce outside the physical premises of markets notified under State Agricultural Produce Marketing legislations.

Under the new system, farmers will have the option to sell their produce at other places in addition to the mandis. In simple words, it empowers the farmers by giving them the choice to sell their produce where they get a better price.

In fact, the contract farming laws enacted by the Centre is modelled on Tamil Nadu’s contract farming laws that was passed in the year 2019, making Tamil Nadu the first state in the country to have a law on contract farming.

Claim 3: Excludes key farm items from Essential Commodities

This is just an outright lie peddled by Suresh Sambandam. Nothing has been removed from any list. Even a layman would know the difference between ‘deregulation’ and ‘exclusion’. The amendments to the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 deregulates agricultural commodities like cereals, pulses, oilseeds, edible oils, potato, etc from state controlled production, supply, and distribution. The amendment states provides that the central government may regulate the supply of certain food items including cereals, pulses, potatoes, onions, edible oilseeds, and oils, only under extraordinary circumstances like war, famine, extraordinary price rise and natural calamity of grave nature and let the price be determined by the market in normal circumstances.

For all his claims about being an ‘entrepreneur’ and having and ushering in a ‘masterstroke’ for Tamil Nadu’s growth, the man is opposing something that exactly seeks to do that. But it is not surprising given the fact that the man is a DMK sympathizer.

This is not the first time Suresh Sambandam has been caught peddling lies. Earlier, he exposed his shallow knowledge on history, politics and economy in an interview with ‘Neeya Naana’ Gopinath to Behindwoods YouTube channel. Back then, he had proved to be nothing more than a Murasoli reader who is wise enough to fabricate data in order to portray DMK as the pioneer of development politics.

On 26 December, the Government Railway Police (GRP) took into custody 4 Rohingyas, including one woman, at Badarpur Railway Station, Dainik Jugasankha reports in its Silchar edition. Rape Fantasy and Other Pornographic Content on Amazon Kindle portrays Hindu Women and Muslim Men

Everyday, one comes across news of horrific crimes being perpetrated upon Hindu women by Muslim men in one part of the country or the other. Such events have become so ubiquitous that no more do they cause the discomfort, rage and distress that such crimes must do in our minds. This social menace – of men from a particular community selectively targeting Hindu women – has also forced the State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh to bring about laws in a bid to curb these appalling crimes.

In a further shocking development, Amazon’s Kindle Store has been circulating pornographic and rape fantasy content on its platform, explicitly portraying Hindu women and Muslim men.

Journalist Swati Goel Sharma reported yesterday that there are at least 90 pornographic and rape fantasy books on Amazon’s Kindle Store that portray Muslim men having extramarital, often forced, sexual relationships with Hindu women. All these books are available on Kindle Store for an annual subscription fee. The Kindle Direct Publishing Service also makes it easier for any unscrupulous writer and publisher to sell such pornographic and rape fantasy literature on the Kindle platform.

The book covers feature men wearing skull-caps and sporting beards, while the women are scantily-clad and are wearing bindis. Furthermore, the Hindu women in the books are depicted as coming from “conservative”, “Iyer”, “religious”, ‘upper middle class”, “religious” backgrounds. By using derogatory phrases like “Madrasi prostitute” and “whore Hindu bitch”, the women are also dehumanized in the eyes of the reader. While one book gives a story of a Muslim “mafia don” raping a married Hindu woman, another presents a story of a married Hindu woman having sexual liaisons with two Muslim “mafia brothers”. It is noteworthy that in almost all the pornographic books, the men are not only Muslims but also have a criminal career, whereas the women are not only Hindu but are also married. The books are clearly meant to appeal to the male audience of a certain community. One can only speculate how men from that community who read such content would act around Hindu women, and if at all, make attempts at fulfilling this ‘fantasy’ in real-life. In fact, there are several scary real-life parallels of the rapes and other crimes portrayed in these books, as has often been reported by Swati Goel Sharma herself. More often than not, Hindu women have been killed by Muslim women for rejecting their advances. Videos of barbaric rapes and gang-rapes of  Hindu women by Muslim men have even been circulated on WhatsApp.

NCW reacts

Reacting to all this, the National Commission for Women has written to Amazon India, and has asked Amazon to take measures to stop the transmission of content that would “perpetrate and promote crime against women and convey a wrong message to the society”.

“Moreover, e-commerce websites shall not be instrumental in dissemination of pornographic and rape content as it violates provisions of law,” the NCW said in a statement.

MHA asked to investigate; Kindle replies

Swati Goel Sharma and her lawyers have also written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to probe the matter and to find out who is behind the publication of this content.

Kindle has also replied, stating that they “are investigating this matter”.

‘Accomplished poet and writer’ exposed, ex-husband releases press statement

Following The Commune’s story, Gunasekharan Dharmaraja alias Charles Antony, the ex-husband of ‘accomplished poet and writer’ Meena Kandasamy, has released a press statement in which he has alleged that Meena Kandasamy has been playing the victim game and trying to earn social mileage.

In the press release, Gunasekharan has raised questions about her Dalit origins adding that her mother belongs to a forward caste and her father a member of the Other Backward Caste (OBC). This is in contradiction to what the ‘writer-activist’ claims in her website of her maternal grandparents being ‘lower-caste Shudras’ and her father being a nomadic tribe.

“You have claimed to be a Dalit to me as well as to the world. However, as per official records, your mother belongs to the forward community while your father belongs to OBC. How do you then pretend yourself or misrepresent/allow to be misrepresented as a member of the Scheduled Castes? Are these to ensure that you could use their historical injustice as a shield to cover your arm-chair activities?”, Gunasekharan has asked in his press release.

He also says that Meena Kandasamy had been trying to extort money from him and his parents.

“You had been trying to extort money from me for your parents by having asked me to ask money from the Eelam Tamils, ever since I was the Member of Parliament of the Transnational Government of the Tamil Eelam.” Gunasekharan added.

Substantiating The Commune’s report about the ‘writer-activist’ extorting money from her husband, Gunasekharan said “Firstly, it was me who had filed a complaint against your father at Kodungaiyur Police Station on the ground that he attacked me. However, your family requested mine to withdraw the police complaint, and because of the family pressure, I withdrew the same. It was just after I withdrew that you had even filed this complaint. Why hasn’t this fact ever been revealed by you? Doesn’t this amount to selective highlighting and twisting of facts, as you accuse everybody else of?”

“You have claimed to be a feminist, and as an activist, fighting for women rights. However, in the F.I.R. filed against me and in the subsequent affidavits filed before the Court of law, for which the information was handwritten and supplied by you, you have accepted to have paid dowry for the marriage. How do you claim yourself as an activist for women’s rights when you yourself gave dowry for your marriage? When these are pointed out, there is no reason to evade them by exposing your intellectual hysteria. I also proclaim before the public that I neither demand nor support dowry. The claims you have made in the FIR concerning dowry, amongst others, is false. Therefore, by claiming to have given dowry, you are either against the feminist ideals that you claim to stand for, or you are committing perjury by providing false information to the police and to the court of law.”, the press release read.

Adding further, he said “You have constantly been accusing me of having harassed you, through your book, articles and social media, portraying me as an abuser. However, I am willing to release to public the email conversations you had on the day of your separation with me, wherein your lies could be exposed to the public, and the real reasons for your parting away would come out. This has not been done till now in the interests of respecting the rule of law, since it is not appropriate to conduct the trial of case pending in the Court before the media.”

Gunasekharan also noted in his press release that the ‘writer-activist’ has not been cooperative in court proceedings and has failed to appear before the XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate Court-Saidapet. “You have filed a complaint of domestic violence, cruelty and wife beating against me in 2012 under sections 498A & 506(ii) of IPC. However, because of your noncooperation in the case, the charge-sheet was filed only two years later”, he said.

“You have also claimed Rs. 10+5 lakhs, through various sources, to settle both the divorce case and also this case respectively and had also warned me that you would pursue such tactics of delaying the case and consequently harassing me if the money was not paid. You are requested to attend the Court proceedings so as to determine who is at the wrong side of the law.” Gunasekharan said.

Apparently, the ‘writer-activist’ had also accused Prof. M.S.S. Pandian of molestation and a Dalit leader who is also a sitting Member of Parliament of ‘dumping her’ to him.

“You have also accused me of harassment and violence. However, you have never come up with any solid evidence to back your claim against anyone you accused. You are requested to fight for your rights before the Court of law, if you claim yourself to be an activist.” Gunasekharan said adding that he is ready for a open debate before the public and the media incase she is unwilling to fight it out in the court.

“My family, my friends and I have been ardent supporters of progressive rights and have always stood against dowry system and have been supporting women’s emancipation. I am ready to engage in this debate in order to highlight my innocence and expose the hypocrisy of all the accusations levelled against me.”, Gunasekharan said.

“In case you feel defamed by any of the above statements, instead of resorting to social media like Twitter and using your usual tactics of evading them, you are requested to approach the Court of law. However, you are expected to at least attend those proceedings and have respect for the rule of law.” Gunasekharan concluded.

Tesla to sell cars in India by early 2021

India’s transport minister, Nitin Gadkari, has confirmed that Elon Musk’s electric car company Tesla will start selling vehicles in the country starting next year. After establishing sales centers, Tesla will then look into setting up manufacturing here, Minister Gadkari said in a statement to CNN Business.

A report by Indian Express said that, Tesla will have a look at possibly building a local production facility based on the response it receives with imported Model 3 sales. The company’s currently building two new production plants, one in Austin, Texas and another in just outside of Berlin, Germany. Tesla opened its first plant outside of the US in Shanghai at the start of this year.

The news should also come as a relief for the people who paid Tesla $1,000 as a deposit. Tesla continued to take bookings until 2017 and planned on releasing some cars in India the same year. However, the launch was delayed indefinitely due to non-adherence to local regulations that require foreign-origin companies to source at least 30% of the parts locally.

India has been courting electric vehicles, though, and carmakers see a lot of sales potential. The government has set an ambitious goal to reduce the number of gas-powered vehicles on its roads while offering subsidies and other incentives to increase the number of electric cars on the market. Hyundai was at the time the second company to sell electric cars in India, after local rival Mahindra. Since then, Tata and MG Motor have debuted their own vehicles in the country, as has Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz.

Army chief Gen MM Naravane becomes first senior Indian military commander to visit South Korea

After the successful visit by Indian Army Chief of Staff (COAS) Gen MM Naravane to Saudi Arabia, on Monday (December 28) the COAS held extensive talks with the top military brass of South Korea during a three-day visit.

This was also the first-ever visit by a head of the Indian Army to South Korea amid Gen Naravane’s visit to South Korea came in the midst of growing global concerns over China’s renewed military offensive in the South China Sea.

Just as Saudi Arabia is the most important Islamic nation in the Middle East, South Korea is the most important East Asian country after Japan and India is looking to further deepen strategic ties amid China’s military muscle-flexing in the region.

In Seoul, Gen Naravane held discussion with Minister of National Defence Suh Wook, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Won In Choul and Minister of Defence Acquisition Planning Administration Gang Eun Ho.

The talks were very specific and it was all about how to further strengthen strategic and defence cooperation between the countries. India and South Korea have already signed a naval logistics sharing pact and have formulated a road map for joint production and research for military systems during a high-level visit by defence minister Rajnath Singh to Seoul in 2019.

The graph of defence and security ties between India and South Korea have been on an upswing in the last ten years and South Korea also expedited the delivery of K-9 ‘Vajra’ self-propelled guns in India as tension with China started to escalate.

South Korea has become a major supplier of weapons platforms for India and now both nations looking at a huge opportunity to expand cooperation in the field of manufacturing equipment relating to aeronautics, shipbuilding, electronics and missile technologies.

Due to its geostrategic location and share border with a hostile neighbour North Korea, South Korea was forced to maintain a robust military and is considered one of the most professional forces in the world and also has a lot of operational experience as it frequently conducts military exercise with US troops in that region.

The South Korean military is always on a very high level of readiness due to the unpredictability of North Korea which is quite similar to Pakistan which violates ceasefire at the Line of Actual Control on regular bases.

Military planners in New Delhi now plan to gain bilateral military cooperation and exchanges of ideas to further prepare our military in case of any sudden hostilities and ensure our level of readiness gives the enemy a moment of pause.

For South Korea, the major concern is increasing Chinese hegemony in the South China Sea and the security of sea lines of communication. India also has the same concern with regards to the growing influence of China in the Indian Ocean region.

As per some defence experts, this visit by the COAS to South Korea could lead to the Asian country to participate in major military exercises like the Malabar Naval exercise in the near future to further interoperability.

Gen Naravane began his engagements by first visiting the country’s war memorial and national cemetery in Seoul where he paid tributes to the fallen heroes.

“During the first-ever visit of an Indian Army COAS to the Republic of Korea, General MM Naravane COAS interacted with Minister of National Defence, His Excellency Suh Wook and discussed issues of mutual interest and defence cooperation,” the Army said in a tweet.

The Army Chief will also visit the Korea Combat Training Centre in Gangwon province and Agency Defence Development (ADD) facility at Daejeon.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi the level of ‘strategic partnership’ has grown exponentailly after his visit to Seoul in 2015.

This is the third importnat visit by India’s COAS. Last month Naravane travelled to Nepal on a three-day visit that had significant diplomatic overtones which can now be seen at the ground level.

The Army Chief has also accompanied Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla when they travelled to Myanmar during which India decided to supply an attack submarine to the Myanmar Navy and further deepen military and defence ties.

Also, Indian and Vietnamese Navy on Sunday concluded the two-day passage exercise in the South China Sea called the “Passage Exercise or PASSEX.

In the last few months, India has given more momentum to its look East policy to counter China and its string of pearls strategy.
