Sri Lankan Tamils with Pak links involved in multi-crore drug smuggling case nabbed in Chennai

Two Sri Lankan Tamils who were involved in a ₹100 crores worth international drugs smuggling case were nabbed by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials in Chennai on Friday.

It was revealed that the individuals were living in Chennai by concealing their real identity.

The case is regarding a drug-laden vessel ‘Shenaya Duwa’ that was intercepted by Indian Coast Guard in late November last year, off the Thoothukudi coast in Tamil Nadu. 99 packets of heroin, 20 boxes of synthetic drugs and five 9mm pistols were unearthed from an unapproachable location on-board the vessel. A Thuraya satellite phone set was also recovered.

The preliminary investigation conducted earlier had revealed that the drugs were transferred by a Pakistani dhow from Karachi to the Sri Lankan vessel ‘Shenaya Duwa’ on the high seas. The contraband was meant to be sent to some of the western countries and Australia.

The boat belongs to one Alensu Kuttige Sinha Deeptha Sani Fernando from Negombo, a city on the west coast of Sri Lanka. During initial questioning, the Lankan crew disclosed that the drugs were transferred into their vessel on the high seas by a Pakistani dhow from Karachi. Following the seizure of contraband, the vessel’s six-member crew was also put behind bars but the search for the main conspirators continued.

This led to the arrest of the Sri Lankan nationals, MMM Nawas and Mohamed Afnas from Chennai. According to the NCB, Nawas and Afnas held important positions in the multinational Heroin syndicate, as they were controlling the mid-sea pick up and delivery of narcotic drugs from Pakistani and Iranian vessels.

It is said that both of them had fled the island nation when the Sri Lankan authorities closed in on them. It is also believed that there is an Interpol Red Corner Notice issued by Sri Lankan Government against Nawas.

In a shockingly high-handed move, the Karnataka High Court has directed the Karnataka state government to impose a complete ban on the sale and usage of all kinds of firecrackers.

The High Court has asked the government to take this decision keeping in mind the public health issues and environmental considerations.

The High Court has urged the government to take the decision within the next three months.

Last year, during Deepavali, the Karnataka government had permitted the sale and bursting of ‘green firecrackers’ by licensed shops in the state. Other states too had permitted ‘green firecrackers’, and had mandated a time-slot for the citizens to burst the firecrackers.

According to an official statement released by the Karnataka government at the time, ‘green firecrackers’ do not contain harmful chemicals, thereby reducing air pollution due to firecrackers considerably. They are also less harmful in comparison to conventional firecrackers. They are available as sparklers, flowerpots and maroons in the market.

The government had also clarified that the recommended ‘green firecrackers’ are manufactured as per the guidelines and formulations developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Environment and Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) lab and product approval for the new formation is given by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.

Tamil YouTube channel reporter harasses Brahmin women

In a classic case of targeted attack against Brahmins, a reporter belonging to a Tamil YouTube channel named Red Pix harassed women belonging to the Brahmin community with insinuating questions in an attempt to intimidate them and peddle caste hatred.

The women had participated in an event near Express Avenue Mall in Chennai that was organized to discuss about the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota and the Tamil Nadu government’s reluctance to implement the same.

After the event, the reporter from Red Pix can be seen confronting a dispersing crowd with mindless questions like whether Hindu women can become temple priests or Sankarachariya.  He also goes on to put words in the mouths of the women saying that women are not allowed to study as per Manu Dharma.

The Red Pix reporter can also be seen going on a rant saying that reading and teaching of Vedas, studying, being in official positions, being High Court/Supreme Court judges and Ministers, etc remain exclusively for Brahmins.

He also goes on to claim that only 13 Ministers are from the OBC (Other Backward Caste) community and that the rest are all higher caste and Brahmins. “Why BJP Cabinet has a majority from the upper caste and Paarpanars (Brahmins)?”, he keeps asking the woman as another lady interjects and pulls the woman away from the scene.

The video clearly shows that the intention of the said reporter was just to harass the women and peddle caste hatred. This video is now going viral on social media with many condemning the behaviour of the reporter.

A few users on Twitter pointed out how women priests do exist in Hindu temples while it was the Church  that does not let women become priests.

Indu Makkal Katchi has taken cognizance of the matter and is in the process filing a police complaint against the said reporter and Red Pix YouTube channel.

Tamil Nadu Congress spokesperson Americai V. Narayanan also condemned the incident and has requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to take action against those who create disharmony.

Speaking to The Commune, spokesperson of Indu Makkal Katchi Sathya Narayanan said “This atrocious hatred has to be countered. We will be slapping cases against the reporter and the channel which is run by a person named Felix Gerald.”

“They ask why only Brahmins are allowed to become Sankarachariyars. They should know that each community have their own mutts and gurus. But they ask Brahmins because they are the punching bags for these Dravidian idealogues”, Sathya Narayanan asked.

“This is why this racial hate peddling ideology called Dravidam has to be rooted out not just from Tamil Nadu but from the entire world. It is a poison wherever it is!”, Sathya said.

DRI seizes 55.61 kg of foreign gold worth ₹28 crore

In a spectacular bust of the Myanmar-India gold smuggling network, the Delhi Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 55.61 kg of foreign origin gold valued at ₹28 crore from eight persons at two locations, i.e. Delhi and Lucknow on 21st January, 2021.

Specific information was developed by DRI regarding smuggling of huge quantity of foreign origin gold from Myanmar into India through the Indo-Myanmar border and sending it to different parts of India. The spurt of economic activity seen after the lifting of COVID related lockdowns throughout the country, combined with the pent-up demand for gold, coincided with a surge in such smuggling activities. The blocking of air routes through the lock down period also saw a significant shift in the modus operandi of smugglers from the air routes to the land route through the Indo-Myanmar border.

Keeping constant vigil over these routes, and with a view to thwarting any large-scale smuggling efforts, the officers of DRI have made a string of spectacular gold seizures in the past six months. These include seizure of 51.33 kg of smuggled gold in November 2020 by the DRI Guwahati Zonal Unit, seizure of 84 kg and 66 kg of smuggled gold in August and November 2020, respectively, by the DRI Zonal Unit, and the present seizure of 55.61 kg of gold by the Delhi Zonal Unit, being the latest in the series.

Due to the intensive counter-smuggling efforts by DRI, the smugglers have been seen to shift their preferred modus from vehicle concealment to in-person concealment. However, in the latest operation, codenamed “Golden Triangle”, which was a coordinated effort by the officers of Delhi Zonal Unit and Lucknow Zonal Unit of DRI, the modus of human concealment has also been busted where the carriers were found to have been concealing the gold bars in belts worn around their waists. Five such passengers were intercepted by officers of DRI, Delhi Zonal Unit near Delhi and three passengers were intercepted by the officers of DRI, Lucknow Zonal Unit at Lucknow. Search of the persons resulted in recovery and seizure of 335 gold bars, weighing 55.61 kg. The said 8 persons have been apprehended and further investigations are underway.

The Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Sh. Anurag Singh Thakur visited the office of DRI, Delhi Zonal Unit to congratulate the officers of DRI for the successful seizure. Chairman CBIC and Pr. DG, DRI were also present.  Shri Thakur appreciated the efforts made by the officers and encouraged them to effect even bigger seizures in the future.
