Stalin has been pushed to lift the ‘vel’: BJP TN President

BJP Tamil Nadu President Dr. L. Murugan while addressing the press at Namakkal said that Stalin lifting the ‘vel’ (the spear weapon of Lord Murugan) is a success of the BJP’s Vel Yathrai.

The BJP leader was participating at an event Rasipuram in Namakkal district. Speaking to reporters, Dr. L. Murugan said “In February, the BJP will be holding rallies across the state. Stalin has been pushed to the extent of lifting the ‘vel’ now. Stalin being pushed to lift the ‘vel’ for votes is the success of our Vel Yatrai.”

He also said that the people will not believe the hypocrisy of Stalin who is known for his Hindu hatred and added that in the coming years, BJP MLAs would be filling the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

“Very soon, the vel of Murugan will send the DMK running helter-skelter”, Dr. L. Murugan said.

At a DMK Gram Sabha meeting held in Ammaiyar Kuppam near Tiruttani, the DMK chief was presented with a silver Vel (spear weapon of Lord Murugan) by the party cadres. Reportedly, poojas were done to this silver Vel at the Tiruttani Murugan temple before presenting it to M.K. Stalin.

Many on social media pointed out that the party is now attempting to shed its anti-Hindu that it had brought upon itself over the decades.

The DMK for long is a party known for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. Earlier, the DMK Chief had on multiple occasions said that if one were to look at the meaning of the mantras chanted during Hindu wedding ceremonies, it would turn out to be ‘disgusting’. He had rubbed off the haldi (turmeric paste) applied on his head by Hindu priests at the Srirangam temple, the one which his father M. Karunanidhi wanted to destroy with a cannon ball. Just a few weeks ago, he rubbed off the vibudhi prasadam given to him at the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar temple. Even , when the Karuppar Koottam episode happened, there was stoic silence from the DMK chief with only the second rung of leaders trying to defend the party distancing themselves from the rabid Periyarists.

Many point that it has become the norm for ‘secular parties’ to cater to the Hindu vote bank by making temple visits and treading soft on them just before elections which they think will help in attracting some Hindu votes. Amidst already existing anti-DMK wave, the party is trying to placate the Hindu voters and calm the waters so that they don’t get destroyed by an anti-DMK tsunami towards the elections.

#Pappu trends on Twitter: RaGa’s latest speech on TN becomes fodder for meme makers

rahul gandhi Indian democracy

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is known for his bloopers added one more to the list during his rally at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu yesterday (January 23).

The Wayanad MP is on a 3 day visit to Coimbatore as part of ‘Rahul-in Tamizh Vanakkam’, the Tamil Nadu Congress’ campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Speaking from a campaign vehicle, Rahul Gandhi said “If we say Tamil Nadu is India, then we have to say India is Tamil Nadu. It cannot be like what Modi said, i.e., Tamil Nadu is a part of India, but India is not Tamil Nadu”.

Tamil Nadu Congress President K.S. Alagiri who was being the translator found himself in a fix finding it difficult to decipher and translate Rahul’s statement in Tamil.

This has led to netizens unleash their creativity with rib-tickling memes and one-liners.

Marriage broker gets robbed and thrown out of car by kidnap gang

Feature Image Courtesy: DNA India

An incident took place near Kanyakumari where a wedding broker who had taken the supposed groom’s family to see the girl, was snatched of 23 sovereigns of gold that he had been wearing and was thrown out of a running car.

Kandasamy, 75, is from Panakudi in Nellai district. He is engaged in the business of marriage and land brokerage.

Last week, a group of 3 people had come looking for Kandaswamy in a luxury car. They had called Kandasamy saying that they were seeking a bride for their son and that they had to go to Anjugram in Kanyakumari district to visit a girl’s house for marriage.

Broker Kandasamy had left with them with a gold chain around his neck, a ring on his finger and a bracelet on his hand. They had gone to a house in Anjugram and had visited the girl’s house. They had then left saying that they did not like the girl and would want to see other prospective brides. On the way back to the city, the family had bought food for Kandasamy and had dropped him off at Panakudi.

Similarly, they had contacted Kandasamy again on Thursday and had told him that there was a prospective bride in the Kaavalkinaru village and that they wanted to go and visit them. Kandasamy had then accompanied them to this location.

The groom’s family then made him get in the car and threatened, holding a knife to his neck, asking him to take off his jewelry. Kandasamy yelled for help, following which the family had stabbed him with a knife and snatched the jewellery that he was wearing.

They then pushed him into the bushes from the running car in the nearby Kannupotthai area and fled at lightning speed.

The public who passed by on Friday morning saw the old man lying in a bush and with the help of the Aralvaymozhi police, rushed him to the Asaripallam Hospital for treatment. Police are on high alert to nab the gang who attacked the broker and robbed him of the jewellery.

“Build a new India where everyone has equal opportunities”: Vice President of India to the youth

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu called upon the youth to take inspiration from the life of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and work for eradication of poverty, illiteracy, social and gender discrimination, corruption, casteism and communalism. He made these remarks while addressing the Officer Trainees attending the Foundation Course at MCR HRD Institute, Hyderabad on the occasion of 125th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose which is being celebrated as ‘Parakram Diwas’ across the country.

Noting that 65% of our population is below 35 years of age, the Vice President said that the youth should lead from the front in building a New India – a happy and prosperous India where every citizen gets equal opportunities and where there is no discrimination of any kind.

Highlighting that Netaji wanted abolition of the caste system in India, the Vice President said that as far back as in the 1940s, soldiers of all castes, creeds and religions lived together, ate together in common kitchens and fought as Indians first and last. Netaji always used to stress that the progress of India would be possible only with the uplift of the down-trodden and the marginalized sections, he said.

Recalling that Netaji stood against injustice in every form right from his school days, he mentioned about the influence of the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo on him. Shri Naidu said this spirituality became a source of inner strength.

The Vice President underlined that Shri Bose believed in giving equal pedestal to women in every sphere of life- be it social, economic, or political. “Progressiveness of Netaji’s ideas can be gauged from his decision to form a women’s corps in INA named Rani of Jhansi Regiment”, he said and appreciated the Government’s decision to provide Permanent Commission for the women in Armed Forces. He concluded, saying that he urged the youth to take inspiration from the life of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and lead from the front in building a New India – a happy and prosperous India where every citizen gets equal opportunities and where there is no discrimination of any kind.

Big fight emerges at Congress Working Committee meeting, RaGa gets angry on Chidambaram

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) comprising of senior leaders of the party held a meeting in New Delhi day before yesterday. During the meeting, a heated argument had reportedly broken out between former Union Minister P. Chidambaram and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot leaving Rahul Gandhi fuming who was later pacified by his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Earlier in August last year, 23 senior leaders that includes Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Union Ministers Kapil Sibal, Manish Tiwari and Shashi Tharoor had written to Sonia Gandhi asking for ‘fulltime effective leadership’ who is ‘active’ and ‘visible’ in the field. They had also asked for appointment of a permanent leader for the Congress party and the holding of elections to the Congress Working Committee. This had led to infighting among senior leaders and created a controversy.

This matter had erupted at the meeting held day before yesterday. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, while speaking, slammed the leaders who wrote the letter saying that, the executive committee meeting had taken place without any issue  for the past 10 years and added that one group is trying to ‘show themselves as big men’ asking for elections suddenly. He had said that leaders should refrain from criticizing the leadership. “Some leaders, without growing from the grassroots, want to get directly to the big post.”, he had apparently blurted out in the meeting.

Some of Sonia’s supporters, including Rajya Sabha MP Ambika Soni, came in support of Gehlot. However, some senior leaders, including Anand Sharma, launched a scathing attack on the Rajasthan Chief Minister. In fact, Anand Sharma and Gehlot were involved in a direct confrontation with the two exchanging barbs and scolding each other with inappropriate words.

This had caused a stir in the meeting. Following this, many, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik and Anand Sharma, insisted that CWC members should be elected through elections’ which was opposed strongly by Ambika Soni, Ashok Gehlot and A.K. Anthony. This had led to the former Union Minister P. Chidambaram directly launching an attack on Gehlot.

In response, Gehlot said “If not for the party, what value and respect do you have on the outside?”, coming down heavy on Chidambaram leading to further exchange in barbs.

Later Anand Sharma had reportedly told that those demanding elections to the working committee have been in the party since the time of Indira Gandhi. “They are all leaders of the Congress and not any other party. It is not okay to abuse fellow leaders and call them in singular” he had reportedly said.

Following this, Rahul Gandhi had intervened and asked the leaders to not use harsh words. “It has been decided to hold elections within the party. Let’s move towards it.”

However, senior journalist Rajagopalan notes that during this big fight, Rahul Gandhi was seething with anger at Chidambaram and was supposedly pacified by his mother and sister. He said in his tweet that the reason nothing untoward happened during the meeting was because it was a virtual meeting.

Hinduphobic content on Netflix is real, but censorship is not the ‘right’ way forward

The Amazon Prime original series—Tandav, rubbed fresh salt on wounds that older Netflix original series like Sacred Games, Leila and Ghoul had left on Hindu sentiments. However, less seems to have changed in terms of the narrative. India’s political right (or the non-left, however one wishes to call) is asking for a ban/boycott of these shows (official summons have also been issued to the OTT platform this time), while the political left claims freedom of speech and expression are in danger.

Both are beaten arguments with their respective merits, but for ‘Netflix and chill’ to remain ‘secular’, it is important that we examine which argument holds more water in the long run, as laws against xenophobia will protect everyone equally, not just the aggrieved.

Firstly, it needs to be noted that freedom of speech is a constitutionally guaranteed right, while content production on OTT platforms is completely unregulated. Per the first argument, if a law banning xenophobic content is to be legislated upon, how will the creators of such a law define what can be considered xenophobic? We live in a world where our daily lives are closely intertwined with religion and the scope for hurting such sentiments is fairly broad. In such a case, how would the courts differentiate a small ‘hurt’ from a bigger one? Will all ‘hurt’ be equal? Another question that begs attention is, will it make criticism of religion impossible?

Such a law would be a serious setback for Hindus and other pagan religions, which have had a significantly more peaceful past as compared to the bloodbath that Abrahamic religions are tainted by. This means, any content that criticises Islam or Christianity for the role they played in the destruction of India’s Hindu past could also be legally contested, claiming to be ‘xenophobic’ and having hurt their religious sentiment. One could argue that these are historic ‘truths’ and will be exempted from the purview of such a law, but what would such truths be worth without the magic of story telling to remember them by?

On the other hand, it is clear from past trends that just about anything cannot be passed off as freedom of speech and expression. We saw it when lawyer Prashanth Bhushan had to pay a fine of ₹1 for defaming the Supreme Court. Freedom of speech and expression is to be exercised responsibly and protected at all costs. It must not be forgotten that governments change, and with it their ideological leanings. What is right for one group today could become their undoing tomorrow.

What then, is the solution?

The economic principle of a free-market is the best bet that both sides have, especially the Hindu community. Firstly, a complete rejection of the products that actors of xenophobic content promote through brand endorsements will send a significant message, as these are key in maintenance of star value. It would also mean that corporates that sponsor these initiatives rethink where they want their money invested. Secondly, India’s political right (non-left) would benefit greatly by uniting as a single vote bank to set the record straight—that they will not consume or support biased content that actively promotes religious bigotry. In the long run, this will impact the kind of films that Bollywood makes; as Hindus have the numbers to carry out an effective boycott that could prove lethal on a filmmaker’s pocket.

With respect to content on OTT platforms, building pressure on the platform itself through a digital agitation may not be enough. In fact, it could also be counter-productive, as any publicity is good publicity. Therefore, it is time to create, nurture and invest in filmmakers and follow it up by building OTT platforms to carry high-quality content for pushing this side of the thought and ideas in the open world. For long the creative space has been held hostage by a single ideological and political class, and that is not what a healthy democracy looks like.

India’s political right is unlike any other in the world, as it is liberal even in its conservatism. Its representatives, however, must realise this and choose their battles carefully. Content wars can be won only by producing great content—a ban is as bad as pressing the button.

Indian scientists spot rare late-stage ultraviolet-bright stars in Milky Way

Featured Image Credits: Rebloggy

Astronomers exploring the massive intriguing globular cluster in our Galaxy called NGC 2808, which is said to have at least five generations of stars, have spotted rare hot UV-bright stars in it. These stars whose inner core is almost exposed, making them very hot, exist in the late stages of evolution of a Sun-like star. It is not clear how these stars end their lives as not many of them are detected in these fast-evolving phases, making their study extremely crucial to physicists and astronomers.

Motivated by the fact that old globular clusters ― referred to as dinosaurs of the universe ― present excellent laboratories where astronomers can understand how stars evolve through various phases between their birth and death, scientists at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, looked out for NGC 2808.

With spectacular ultraviolet images of the cluster from Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard India’s first multi-wavelength space satellite AstroSat, scientists were able to distinguish the hot UV-bright stars from the relatively cooler red giant and main-sequence stars which appear dim in these images. The findings of this study have been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.

A false colour image of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained using AstroSat/UVIT. The stars as seen using far-UV (FUV) filter are shown in blue colour, and the yellow colour is used to show the stars observed in near-UV (NUV).

The team of scientists includes Deepthi S. Prabhu, Annapurni Subramaniam and Snehalata Sahu from the IIA.

They combined the UVIT data with observations made using other space missions such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gaia telescope, along with ground-based optical observations. About 34 UV-bright stars were found to be members of the globular cluster. From the data the team derived the properties of these stars, such as their surface temperatures, luminosities and radii.

One of the UV-bright stars was found to be about 3000 times brighter than the Sun with a surface temperature of about 100,000 K.  The properties of these stars were then used to place them on what astronomers call the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) diagram along with theoretical models to throw light on the characteristics of their parent stars and to predict their future evolution. Most of the stars were found to have evolved from a solar stage called the horizontal branch stars with hardly any outer envelope. Thus they were bound to skip the last major phase of life called the asymptotic giant phase and directly become dead remnants or white dwarfs.

Such UV-bright stars are speculated to be the reason for the ultraviolet radiation coming from old stellar systems such as elliptical galaxies which are devoid of young blue stars. Hence, it is all the more important to observe more such stars to understand their properties.

The mysterious red button on the POTUS table goes missing after Biden’s take over

Ever since Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States last Wednesday, he has been reversing various things that his predecessor had done. One among them is the removal of a red button that was there on the President’s desk in the White House.

The Oval Office in the White House has a huge table where the President sits. When Trump was President he had placed a small red button on the Oval Office desk.

On Thursday morning, British journalist Tom Newton Dunn shared pictures of Biden and former President Donald Trump sitting behind their desks, noting one significant difference. Back in 2019, Tom Newton, the chief political commentator on Times Radio, and Tim Shipman, the political section editor at the Sunday Times, were surprised to see a little red button when they had gone to interview Trump. When asked about it, Trump pressed that button, and immediately, an employee brought Diet Coke on a silver platter. According to media reports, he consumes 12 cans of diet coke daily.

Cliff Sims, a former White House aide, has written an autobiography, Team of Vipers. In it, he describes how Trump used to deceive all those who came to see him with this red button. “He told them it was a button to activate nuclear weapons and he would immediately press it. Guests who arrived would then be bewildered, while an employee brought in a glass cup filled with Diet Coke on a silver platter. Trump would then burst out laughing.”

But it wasn’t just a Trump thing. The red button was there even during the time of Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Richard Branson in his autobiography notes that Obama had explained to him about the red button as something that was earlier used for emergencies. “Now I use them for ordering tea for my guests”.
