Afghan police officials confirmed that three separate bomb blasts shook the city of Kabul on Saturday, leaving at least five people dead and wounding two others.

The first explosion targeted a corolla vehicle, at around 8 AM in Darulaman Road in the west of Kabul, injuring two  people.

The second explosion occurred at around 8:15 AM in the Kart-e-Parwan area in Kabul’s PD4. The blast also targeted a corolla vehicle and killed three people, including a woman.

The third explosion in the Pul-e-Wahdat area in Kabul’s PD3 at roughly 1:20 AM, killing two people.

While no terror group has claimed responsibility for the blasts, the conflict-ridden region is home to the Islamic State (IS) of Khorasan and the Taliban. Between January 20 to February 19 this year, 51 people were killed and 70 wounded in security and crime incidents in Afghanistan. 66 security and crime incidents happened in Kabul during this time that indicates a slight increase in security and crime incidents in Kabul compared to a month before.

39 IED explosions, 8 cases of assassination and armed attacks and 20 crime incidents happened in Kabul between January 20 to February 19.

A country-wide rise in bombings, targeted killings and violence on the battlefield comes amid stalled peace negotiations between the Taliban and the civilian Afghan government.

Tensions in Afghanistan are high amid a string of targeted killings. Some are claimed by the local Islamic State affiliate, but many go unclaimed, blamed by the government on the Taliban who have denied responsibility for most attacks.

IS claimed that it carried out 82 attacks in Afghanistan in 2020, killing or wounding 821 people, including 21 assassinations. However, the perpetrators of many targeted killings are unknown.

Members of Tablighi Jamaat, accused of intentionally spreading COVID-19, acquitted by Lucknow court

A Sessions Court at Lucknow has acquitted 18 members of the Islamic organisation the Tablighi Jamaat who were accused of “intentionally spreading” the coronavirus by attending the Jamaat religious congregation at Nizamuddin, Delhi.

11 of the accused who have been acquitted are Indians, while 7 are from Indonesia.

The accused were booked for offences under Sections 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 271 (Disobedience to quarantine rule) of the Indian Penal Code, Section 3 of Epidemic Diseases Act (penalty for offence under section 118 of IPC) and Section 14(B) of Foreigners Act (penalty for using forged passport).

However, the Court observed that there was nothing on record to show that the accused had violated any ‘quarantine’ rules.

“All the accused are acquitted in the Criminal Case No. 0047/2020 at P.S. Shahganj, District Prayagraj from the charge for the offences leveled under Section 188, 269, 270, 271 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 14 (B) of the Foreigners Act and Section 3 of the Epidemic Act,” the Court ruled.

Advocate Zia Jilani who appeared on behalf of the Tablighi Jamaat said “there was no evidence on record to prove that there was any motive on the part of the accused to spread the virus, as the accused had followed the directives issued by the local authorities all along.”

The court observed that “any news running on newspapers and news channels cannot be placed in the category as pronouncement of order by the public servant.”

The case diary had described the absence of the COVID-19 test by the accused on the basis of news reports running on newspapers and news channels.

The ruling also said that there was no restriction on visiting religious places and “participating in normal religious activities unless preaching religious ideologies, making speeches in religious places, distribution of audio or visual display pertaining to religious ideologies, spreading conversion etc. acts not done.”

The verdict furthermore turned down the contention of Section 14B Foreigners Act being violated, stating that there was no violation of Visa Rules.

Earlier, Tablighi Jamaat members had  been similarly acquitted in courts in Jharkhand, Bengaluru, Patna, Mumbai and Delhi, with several charges and cases against the accused quashed by the judiciary. The Delhi High Court even made the astounding observation that the Jamaat attendees were “maliciously prosecuted”.

“RSS gave me foundational values”, says E Sreedharan, also raises the issue of “Love Jihad”

e sreedharan kerala bjp

E Sreedharan, who is all set to join the BJP during the state-wide ‘Vijay Yatra’, has said that he has a decades-old association with RSS and his stint as a swayamsevak right from his school days has laid all the foundational values in his life. He added that he is ready to become Kerala’s chief minister if the BJP wins the assembly elections and if the party makes that decision.

The “Metro Man  of India” also said that cases of “love jihad” in Kerala are on the rise, where Hindu girls were tricked into marriages, reports Hindustan Times.

Sreedharan was responding to a question on “love jihad” in a TV interview, and said, “Love jihad, yes, I see what is happening in Kerala. How Hindus are being tricked in a marriage and how they suffer. Not only Hindus, Muslim, but Christian girls are also being tricked into a marriage. Now that sort of a thing I certainly will oppose.”

His public views on love jihad come just a day after he had announced that he would be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as Kerala heads for Assembly elections.

However, the decision to join the BJP came about after he lost faith in all other political parties and was impressed by the party’s progressive outlook and the development the party will bring to Kerala, he said.

During the interview, Sreedharan said the decision to join the BJP was not a quick one but was well thought out.

Twitter censors PM Modi, says tweet on Chhatrapati Shivaji is “sensitive”

twitter censorship modi

In a baffling turn of events, Twitter has resorted to hiding the contents of a recent tweet sent by PM Narendra Modi to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. Modi had shared a video on Twitter, paying his respects to the illustrious ruler and military commander. Highlighting the influence of Shivaji on Indians, he stated that “the saga of his indomitable courage, amazing valour and extraordinary intelligence will continue to inspire countrymen for ages”.

In what can only be called as outright censorship, the social media giant hid the video shared by the PM, saying that the media “includes potentially sensitive content.”

A screenshot of the tweet that is censored by Twitter

Army veteran and BJP member Major Surendra Poonia shared a screenshot of the Prime Minister’s Twitter timeline in a tweet and questioned what exactly in PM Modi’s tweet had been deemed “sensitive” by Twitter. “Strange & Suspicious ! So after Trump our Prime Minister Sh @narendramodi is on target of Social Media giants ?? @PMOIndia @rsprasad What is sensitive in this tweet of PM?”, he tweeted.

Twitter has had run-ins with the Indian government earlier. Recently, Twitter locked horns with the Indian administration over the company allowing several accounts to disseminate inflammatory and malicious propaganda on the social media platform against India and the Centre’s farm laws. The government had asked Twitter to curtail the “motivated campaigns” and the use of a controversial hashtag around PM Narendra Modi on the platform. The government had alleged that the platform was being used to “abuse, inflame and create tension in society on unsubstantiated grounds.”

The government had warned Twitter that failure to comply with its order would invite action against the company under Section 69A [3] of the IT Act, under which senior officials of the micro-blogging site could face a jail term of up to seven years, and a financial penalty.

Twitter then deactivated 126 of the 257 handles that had originally tweeted using the controversial hashtag, The micro-blogging site also deactivated 583 of the 1,178 handles that the government suspected to have links with Khalistani and Pakistani elements.

Social media monopolies like Twitter and Facebook have faced a lot of flak globally when they banned former US President Donald Trump from using their platforms when he was still in office. The tech giants had also banned several pro-Trump and Republican accounts, many of whom had alleged electoral fraud in the 2020 US Presidential elections.

Court grants permimssion to conduct Rath Yatra in Madurai for the construction of Ram Mandir

Sri Ram temple Christians Ram Mandir Ayodhya Karnataka

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court in response to a writ petition filed granted permission to conduct the rath yatra in Madurai, as part of the donation drive for Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya.

Selvakumar from Madurai had filed a petition in the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. In it, he said, “In lieu of the Ram Mandir temple construction work which is underway in Ayodhya, we are planning to conduct a rath yatra with the objective of gathering aide from devotees. In that regard, we petitioned the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) seeking permission to operate the vehicle with a loudspeaker in 100 wards in Madurai.”

The petition went on to say, ” The ACP refused, saying that given the curfew in force across India to curb the spread of corona, it is not possible to issue a permit in view of the law and order situation. Despite several relaxations that have been granted in the corona restrictions, the denial of permission for the rath yatra was unacceptable in a context where meetings of several political parties were permitted.”

It further went on to beseech that, “The denial of the permission was unacceptable as it was scheduled to be held for 10 consecutive days starting from 8 pm. Therefore, the order of the Tilak Stadium Assistant Commissioner who refused permission to conduct a chariot pilgrimage in Madurai should be revoked and a replacement order should be issued giving permission to conduct the pilgrimage.”

The case came up for hearing as an urgent case before Judge Hemalatha. At the time of the verdict, the Commissioner of Police said, “We are withdrawing the order issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Police and granting permission with conditions.” The judge who recorded it closed the case by ordering the conditional permission to conduct a rath yatra to Madurai by Friday evening.

Congress strongman Nana Patole threatens Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar

Nana Patole Amitabh Bacchan Akshay Kumar

The coalition government in Maharashtra consisting of the Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress, which had received many accolades from Bollywood celebrities at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, is now up in arms against some of the biggest stars in the film industry.

In a very menacing manner, Maharashtra Congress Chief Nana Patole threatened to stop the release of Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar’s films if they do not stand with the opposition on the recent fuel price hike in the country.

https://twitter.com/Shehzad_Ind/status/1362329800577191938

Patole was angry after many top Bollywood actors came to support India over the issue concerning the Greta Thunberg ‘toolkit’ and the tweets sent by pop star Rihanna and popular porn star Mia Khalifa

A while back, the Maharashtra government had instituted a probe against cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar and iconic playback singer Lata Mangeshkar for a tweet. Both of them are the recipients of India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

The two living icons had called for national unity through their official Twitter handles in the wake of the violence by protesting farmers in Delhi on January 26, and had also spoken on why foreign nations do not have the right to interfere in the internal matters of India.

Patole publicly berated Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. Arguing that both the actors had taken a stand on fuel prices when the Congress-led UPA was in power, he said that they must now take a stand against the fuel price rise now. He said that the Congress will stop the shooting of films and added that there will be no screening of their films in the state.

Patole was the speaker of Maharashtra assembly and took over as the Congress chief in the state just a few days ago.

During the height of the Emergency, singer Kishore Kumar and his songs were banned from All India Radio because he did not support the unconstitutionally imposed Emergency by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Actor Dev Anand’s films were banned also from Doordarshan after he refused to praise Sanjay Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi.

The lyricist Mazrooh Sultanpoori spent two years in jail for writing a poem criticising Jawaharlal Nehru.

Tamil Nadu: CPI-M comrade thrashes labourer for refusing to give money for elections

A party member of the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) thrashed a government godown labourer in Sembianmahadevi near Nagapattinam after he refused to give money to the party for elections.

Gnanasekaran, regional secretary for the Marxist Communist Party in Nagapattinam, had allegedly stormed into the godown, along with three other members of his party, who also serve as Gnanasekaran’s henchmen, and had forcefully demanded Sellaiyan, the supervisor of the godown, to give them cash for election funds. When he had refused, they had gone on to demand ten sacks of rice grains, which he subsequently refused. Infuriated by this, they ended up creating a huge ruckus and seriously injuring Sellaiyan. They had thrown the chairs and sticks that were lying around helter-skelter and attacked Sellaiyan, beating him up. The Communist party member had attacked the godown run by the government which serves as the direct collection agency for rice grains.

Police are conducting an investigation on those who were involved in this attack.

The victim was severely injured and was admitted to the nearby hospital. When the police rushed to the spot, he tearfully recounted the day’s events and pointed out his injuries, pleading justice.

35 DMK MLAs offer donations for Ayodhya Ram Mandir

The news that 35 DMK MLAs have so far donated for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya has caused a buzz in social media and in political circles. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and various Hindu organizations have been raising funds from people across the country to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya. As part of this drive, 67 crores has been collected from Tamil Nadu alone to date. Another ₹ 33 crores are needed to reach ₹100 crores target.

Over 1,511 crore has been raised nationwide so far for the construction of Ram temples across the country. Surprisingly, 35 MLAs from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which is known for abusing Hindus and Hindu Gods have donated for the construction of the Ram Temple. Various people have been expressing their views on social media. DMK Muslim MLA KS Masthan has donated ₹11,000 for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

All parties have started work for the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Netizens have recorded that the DMK has been issuing various such statements to change its anti-Hindu image and that they will start anti-Hindu activities again if they come to power. “As long as Kalaignar was alive, the members of the DMK did not express their Hindu sentiments and identities. But now they are openly expressing their Hindu sentiments after Stalin took over the leadership.”, a few party insiders note.

A few days ago, the DMK President Stalin and his son Udayanidhi lifted the vel, the spear weapon of Hindu God Murugan. After the Karuppar Koottam episode, in which the rabid YouTube channel run by ‘Periyarists’ with links to the DMK, abused Hindu God Murugan and Kandha Sashti Kavasam, the DMK has been feeling the heat for its anti-Hindu politics. Since then, the DMK has been sweating over the rising Hindu consolidation in Tamil Nadu with many of its leaders trying to placate the Hindu voters.

At present, hardcore DMK supporters who swear by the names of E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker (known as ‘Periyar’ by his followers), C.N. Annadurai and Karunanidhi are wondering if these are being done at the behest of I-PAC, the political consultancy firm engaged by the party for the upcoming polls. Many also view this as an attempt by the party to keep the BJP in good books.

Singer Chinmayi goes on Twitter rant and plays victim card, calls young student a ‘BJP member’ for supporting farm laws

singer chinmayi disha ravi

Controversial singer Chinmayi Sripada’s recent tweetstorm with a college student over the arrest of climate activist Disha Ravi who played a major role in the creation and dissemination of the Greta Thunberg ‘toolkit’, has sparked debate.

In her tweet, Chinmayi could be seen accusing a college student of being a member of the BJP just because she had spoken in support of the farm laws.

What started out as a harmless tweet by the student, questioning the singer’s opinions on the farmer empowerment laws, quickly blew out of proportion, as Chinmayi kept mocking the girl and even accused her of being a rape apologist.

https://twitter.com/MShruthee/status/1362333653305466882

The singer then went on to accuse the student of being “part of the problem” for not talking about Tamil actor Radha Ravi, who is accused of sexual harassment and had joined the BJP in 2019. Chinmayi also constantly referred to the BJP as “her party”. She added that the student did not have the “moral fibre” required to question misogyny.

However, the student clarified that Chinmayi may very well question actor Radha Ravi’s entry into the BJP, but should not label every supporter of the Centre’s farm laws as a ‘BJP supporter’ or a misogynist. The singer had earlier made allegations of sexual harassment, misconduct and inappropriate behaviour against Radha Ravi. She has also made similar accusations against Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu, who works in the Tamil film industry and is also closely associated with the DMK.

https://twitter.com/MShruthee/status/1362335669700362241

Several netizens and prominent Twitterati came out in support of Shruthee and tweeted in support of her, sparking a vociferous debate.

BJP Tamil Nadu spokesperson SG Suryah said that it was convenient of Chinmayi to dismiss everyone disagreeing with her as a ‘BJP supporter’ and added that the slurs used by Chinmayi against a young college student were “unbecoming of [a] self proclaimed ‘feminist’ “.

Triggered by the massive outpouring of tweets against her, Chinmayi went on a rant criticizing the arrest of Bengaluru-based climate activist Disha Ravi.

It is alleged that Ravi had played a significant role in the creation and dissemination of the Greta Thunberg ‘toolkit’ and had spoken to foreign handlers via video-conference.

When the BJP spokesperson pointed this out, she accused him of ‘peddling lies’ and also shared an article criticizing the arrest of Disha Ravi.

Even though she claimed to have read the ‘toolkit’, the singer dismissed the concerns voiced by many that the document’s creators were pro-Khalistani. She also side-stepped the fact that the document aims to build international pressure on India on social media.

Ultimately, the singer blocked the student with whom she had had the initial disagreement.

Saving face: China honours its dead 8 months after Galwan clash against India, claims soldiers died in “self-defense”

Eight months after the Himayalan border clash at Galwan valley clash in which Indian soldiers were ambushed by the PLA, China officially acknowledged on Friday (19 February), that four of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers were killed and one was injured in the clashes.

While this revelation comes at the heels of a full Chinese withdrawal from the shores of the Pangong lake in Ladakh and both nations agreeing to status quo ante, what is more revelatory is the language used by the military and the Chinese state-run media when referring to the violent clash which resulted in a nearly nine-month long stand-off between India an China atop the icy Himalayan mountains.

As can be expected, Chinese state-run media lays the responsibility for the clash squarely on India. Remarkably, however, the report doesn’t name India, but refers to the Indian Army as “foreign forces” who were “tresspassing”.

According to a report by the China Global Television Network (CGTN), the communist regime has honoured two officers and three soldiers for “defending the country’s western border”.

“China’s military authorities have honored two officers and three soldiers, including four who received the awards posthumously, for defending the country’s western border. The People’s Liberation Army Daily on Friday reported that the Central Military Commission issued commendations to the servicemen for their role in bravely fighting back hostilities provoked by foreign forces at the Galwan Valley”, the report said.

The five PLA troops were honoured with honorary titles and first-class merit citations. Four of them were honoured posthumously.

“The title of “border-defending hero” was conferred on Battalion Commander Chen Hongjun posthumously, while Chen Xiangrong, Xiao Siyuan and Wang Zhuoran received the first-class merit. They all died in a clash with trespassing foreign military personnel wielding steel tubes, cudgels, and stones last June.”

“Qi Fabao, who was seriously injured in the skirmish, received the title of “hero regiment commander for defending the border”, the CGTN report stated.

Names match with photograph of one Chinese soldier’s tomb doing the rounds on social media last year

Photographs of a tomb of one Chinese soldiers who had died in the clash were doing the rounds on Chinese social media last year.

The tombstone, written in mandarin, read, “Soldier of the 69316 troops, from Pingnan, Fujian.”

“Tomb of Chen Xiangrong. He was sacrificed in the struggle against India’s border troops in June 2020 and was posthumously remembered by the Central Military Commission.”

The name on the tomb matches with the names of the dead soldiers released by China.

The CGTN report also quoted Ren Guoqiang, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense saying that an honorary title was awarded to those who made great contributions to combat, training, or other areas.

“The Party, country, and the army attach great importance to the pensions and preferential treatment to the families of military personnel, Ren said, stressing that the country and the Chinese people will never forget the martyrs who sacrificed themselves to protect the country. Ren reiterated that China’s stance on border issues is always clear and consistent. China is committed to settling conflicts through negotiations, the spokesperson reaffirmed, adding that the country is striving to ease the regional tension to restore peace and tranquility in the area”, the report continued.

The Central Military Commission (CMC), which is the national defense organization of the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Republic of China and is headed by Xi Jinping, uncharacteristically also unveiled the names and stories of the martyrs for the first time to commemorate their sacrifice for defending “national sovereignty and territory”.

However, based on reports by Russian news agency TASS, Lieutenant General Y C Joshi, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army’s Northern Command had claimed that 45 Chinese PLA soldiers were killed on 15 June 2020.

It is noteworthy that it has taken over eight months for China to acknowledge the deaths of its own soldiers, while India had earlier said, in June itself, that twenty of its soldiers had died in the clash.
