“Private sector should partner with government to bring affordable healthcare to rural”: VP Venkaiah Naidu

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu today expressed his concern over the urban-rural gap in health infrastructure and called upon the private sector to join hands with the government to bring the latest healthcare diagnostic and treatment facilities to the rural areas at an affordable cost.

He said, “There is an urgent need to bridge this divide so that people in rural areas also get access to modern and state-of-the-art healthcare in their own villages.” Stressing the importance of providing quality healthcare to every individual, the Vice President said, “No one in our villages should suffer because of lack of medical facilities.”

Complimenting the government for allocating a sum of Rs. 2,23,846 crores to health in the recent budget, he said:”I am certain that this move will give a powerful boost to creating healthcare infrastructure in our country and most importantly, cut the out-of-pocket expenditure on health.”

The Vice President also called for spreading awareness on health schemes like Ayushman Bharat so that the underprivileged could take advantage of it.

Citing India’s incessant efforts of sharing resources with the rest of the world, the Vice President said, “We lived up to our age-old philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam by supplying medicines and medical equipment to over 150 countries in the world. Since the rollout of the “Made in India” COVID vaccines in January this year, India has supplied vaccines to several countries.” He said that India’s reputation of being a “pharmacy to the world” shines even more brightly today.

Noting the toll hospital visits take on patients and their family members, the Vice President, appealed to the healthcare providers to explore ways to improve patient experience and reduce patient suffering. Calling for bringing a human touch to medical profession, he said that the doctors should not just rely upon the medical tests but also spend time with and talk to the patients. The Vice President also urged the doctors, actors and media persons to educate the public about the preventive steps and safeguard from Covid-19. He termed the politics, medical profession and education as means of public service.

Shiv Sena goes behind its ally Congress’ back and announces its withdrawal from WB election

Shiv Sena WB election Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray has passively snubbed Congress, the party’s ally, by refusing to contest in the West Bengal elections. This was issued as a statement by the party spokesperson and MP Sanjay Raut. It is to be noted that the Shiv Sena had contested in the 2016 elections in 21 seats, but hardly even recovered their deposits.

On January 17, Shiv Sena had announced that it would contest the West Bengal polls. Raut had then tweeted that the “Shiv Sena is reaching Kolkata soon”.

Describing the TMC supremo as the ‘real Bengal tigress’, Raut conveyed his party’s best wishes to her. In lieu of the announcement of the withdrawal, Raut took to Twitter and tweeted that at the moment, it appears to be a “Didi vs All fight.”

“All ‘M’s – Money, Muscle and Media are being used against ‘M’amata Didi. Hence, Shiv Sena has decided not to contest West Bengal polls and stand in solidarity with her. We wish Mamata Didi a ‘roaring’ success, ‘cos we believe She is the real Bengal Tigress,” he further said.

Meanwhile, the Bihar opposition leader told reporters, “Our alliance with the Left and Congress is only in Bihar. It is our duty to strengthen Mamata Didi‘s hands here and fight the BJP.”

Police reform bill named for George Floyd passed in US House of Representatives

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - JUNE 01: Protestors march down Queen Street on June 01, 2020 in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo by Hannah Peters/Getty Images)

After the death of George Floyd ― an African American who died on 25 May 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for minutes ― led to the birth of the Black Lives Matter Movement, an historic bill aimed at police reforms and named after Floyd was passed in the US House of Representatives. All set to police the US Police force, the new bill effectively bans chokeholds and eliminates qualified immunity for law enforcement.

According to a fact sheet on the legislation, the measure would allow “individuals to recover damages in civil court when law enforcement officers violate their constitutional rights by eliminating qualified immunity for law enforcement.” The fact sheet also states that the legislation would “save lives by banning chokeholds and no-knock warrants” and would mandate “deadly force be used only as a last resort.”

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, H.R. 1280, was championed by Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., and was passed in the Parliament in a 220-212 vote. “Never again should an unarmed individual be murdered or brutalized by someone who is supposed to serve and protect them,” Bass said in a statement. “Never again should the world be subject to witnessing what we saw happen to George Floyd in the streets in Minnesota.”

While Democrats Jared Golden and Ron Kind joined the Republicans in voting against the bill, Republican Congressman Lance Gooden of Texas was the only ‘Red’ who voted for it. Funnily enough, he tweeted an apology saying he had voted for it ‘by mistake’.

Canada gets 5 lakh doses of Covishield vaccine from India, 15 lakh more to follow

Unfounded, Absurd And Baseless Insinuations Part Of Canada's Strategy To Discredit India: MEA

Canada received its first batch of around five lakh doses of Covishield vaccine on Thursday (04 March), manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII).

“The first tranche of five lakh doses arrived this morning in Canada from Serum Institute of India with 15 lakh more doses to follow. We look forward to future collaboration,” said Anita Anand, Canadian Minister of Public Services & Procurement.

Canada, which is a first-world country with an advanced economy, does not have the domestic production capacity to develop or produce vaccines, which is why it has asked for CoVID-19 vaccines from India and elsewhere, reports LiveMint.

In February, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had called the Indian PM Narendra Modi with a request for vaccines.

Trudeau then went on to say that if the world managed to conquer COVID-19, “it would be significant because of India’s tremendous pharmaceutical capacity, and PM Modi’s leadership in sharing this capacity with the world.”

India has already sent 67.5 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccines as grant assistance and 294.44 lakh doses on a commercial basis to various countries.

India manufactures 60 per cent of global vaccines and is one of the world’s biggest drug-maker. Already, consignments of anti-coronavirus vaccine doses have been sent as gifts to neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

India has also provided the Covid-19 vaccines to Bahrain, Oman, Afghanistan, Barbados and Dominica.

Countries with which India has commercial agreements to provide the vaccines include Brazil, Morocco, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Egypt, Algeria, South Africa, Kuwait and the UAE.

‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan will be BJP’s CM candidate for Kerala assembly elections

bjp kerala e sreedharan

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that their Chief Ministerial candidate, if the party gets voted to power in Kerala, will be the ‘Metro Man’, E Sreedharan. The announcement was made by BJP’s Kerala chief K Surendran.

Sreedharan is expected to resign from his post of Principal Adviser DMRC today (4 March) before filing his nomination papers for the polls. Sreedharan has expressed his desire to contest from a seat in Kochi, which is not too far away from his residence in Ponnani.

Sreedharan, however, will still ensure that the final round of inspections at the reconstructed Palarivattom flyover are completed. He will also continue to remain available to oversee developmental projects.

Sreedharan came into the public limelight after he successfully executed the Delhi Metro project. Considered one of India’s greatest engineers who took on challenging mega projects like the Konkan Railway, he has also been credited with planning and implementing the Kolkata Metro and turning around the Cochin Shipyard. Delhi Metro is only one of the handful of Metro projects in the world that is profitable and has changed the way people in Delhi and the National Capital Region commute.

Sreedharan has also been on advisory roles in Kochi Metro, Jaipur Metro, Lucknow Metro, Coimbatore Metro and proposed projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.

Sreedharan said that he joined the BJP after a lot of contemplation and has been very vocal about the social issue of love jihad, as, in his own words, he has seen Hindu girls being tricked into marriages in Kerala.

Muslim League’s P K Kunhalikutty from Kerala asks BJP to be ‘more inclusive’ and ‘secular’

P K Kunhalikutty Kerala Muslim league

In what can be called as a case of the pot calling the kettle black, senior Muslim League leader and the party’s national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of having no idea of secularism.

Kunhalikutty’s advice to the BJP was that if the party wants to be relevant in Kerala state politics, it should practise secularism. He told the BJP to be ‘more inclusive’ like the Congress party.

This statement comes days after senior Kerala BJP leader Sobha Surendran invited the Muslim league to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition headed by the BJP, on the condition that it embrace nationalism and approve of PM Modi’s policies. At a public event held at Chelakkara in Thrissur as part of a ‘Vijaya Yatra’, Sobha reiterated her stance on the Muslim League. She said that the League could be welcomed to the NDA fold if it sheds its communal nature, embraces nationalism and approves the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She underscored that the BJP is a political organisation that takes all groups along with it.

P K Kunhalikutty also claimed that his party is one of the most secular parties in India. However, the Muslim League as a party only allows Muslims to become MLAs and MPs, and people of other faiths are not allowed to contest elections with their party ticket.

The Muslim League has close connections with fundamentalist Islamic groups in Kerala as well. It was involved in the 2003 Marad massacre of Hindus. Eight Hindus were killed by a Muslim mob on 2 May 2003 and a probe into the incident had concluded that the Indian Union Muslim League was directly involved in the massacre. The League used its political influence and its close proximity to the power centres of Kerala, ensuring that the Islamic party did not come under any investigation.

Recently, Kunhalikutty had resigned from the Lok Sabha to contest the assembly election in Kerala. Before leaving the Lok Sabha, he had proclaimed that he would oppose PM Modi tooth and nail. He is expected to get a ministerial berth if the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance wins the Kerala elections. As per reports, the Muslim League is jockeying for the position of Deputy CM as it is the second-largest party in the UDF alliance.

‘Communist Parties fake their love for the transgender community’, says former AISF office-bearer

BJP transgender
Featured Image Credits: Organiser

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ‘Vijaya Yatra’ gains momentum, it has started to gain support from sections of the civil society, particularly the transgender community.

In a program held at Tripunithura, five members from the transgender community became members of the BJP officially. They were welcomed by the party chief of the BJP’s Kerala unit, K Surendran. Among the new members was Avanthika Vishnu, a former office-bearer of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India (CPI), reports Organiser.

Avanthika Vishnu gave an interview to Organiser Weekly about her decision to join the BJP, in which she made shocking revelations about the present condition of the members of the transgender community in Kerala. She said, “But once I revealed my identity, my fellow comrades were reluctant to accept who I am and they made fun of me. After that, I stayed away from AISF. But I continued to be a left-oriented person. The biggest thing that I realised from my life is the ‘Communist Parties’ fake their love for the transgender community. They are just trying to score political points by using us.”

“Kerala government has been making tall claims regarding rehabilitation of transgender community members. But in reality, nothing is changing at the ground level. Many are still indulging in prostitution to earn a living,” Avanthika said. “Now the state government is making advertisements regarding their projects for the transgender community. Only a few are getting benefits from the government while the needy members of the community are totally sidelined,” she alleged.

“Sex-change surgeries are only happening in private hospitals where the cost is extremely high. The community members are forced to arrange money for their surgeries either by doing sex work or by begging. There is no other way that a member of the transgender community can find a job in Kerala. I took a loan from a financial institution for my surgery. It took a year for me to get the money promised by the government. By that time the interest that I had to pay for the borrowed amount exceeded the money given by the state government,” she complained.

“The state government is not following any procedures while issuing transgender ID cards. There are many cases of duplication of which I am aware. If any individual approaches the government claiming that he/she is transgender, he gets a government-approved ID card. This can be easily misused for gaining incentives from the government. There should be a proper procedure for identity confirmation,” demanded Avanthika.

“State government would announce various projects for the transgender community members. They even go to the extent of taking the list of beneficiaries. But when we enquire, they will tell us that the project stands cancelled,” she said. “The state government had boasted about giving jobs to the members of the transgender community in Kochi metro. But due to various issues including the inability to find accommodation, many transgenders had to quit their jobs,” she said.

When asked why LGBTQ organisations often take an anti-Hindu or an anti-BJP stand, Avanthika said, “They have their own agendas. They even influenced our thought process.”

“After joining BJP, now I am under cyber-attack. There are only a few BJP followers on my Facebook Friends’ list. Most of them are communists. Now they are targeting my transgender identity. Let them say anything. Many more members from my community will join BJP soon. I will work for BJP in the upcoming assembly election, to make sure that my party wins,” Avanthika said with a lot of enthusiasm.

The true position of Christians in Dravidian-parties dominated TN

Despite having key responsibilities in various parties, the fact remains that Christians are not holding positions of power in Tamil Nadu and that there are not enough representatives in the Assembly and Parliament to echo the voice of Christians. This is a major matter of concern for Christians says Calvary Thiagarajan, Secretary of BJP Tamil Nadu’s Minority Morcha.

In conversation with Dinamalar, Calvary Thiagarajan, said that no one in Dravidian parties are pro-Christian but only use Christians as vote banks.

He added, “Under the rule of the Dravidian parties, Christians did not get political recognition. Those parties use Christians like pickles, only to vote in elections. It is the archbishops and the clergy who, as the representatives of the Christians, are mistakenly thought to be the leaders of the community. They get huge amount of money from abroad. When the tax department asks accounts for that money, they feel threatened. That is why, they do not like Prime Minister Modi and the BJP. They are spreading anti-Modi sentiments among Christians. Speaking of atheism, they support the DMK.”

He went on to say, “All Christians are portrayed as anti-Modi and anti-BJP. There are parties for Muslims. They join a Dravidian party alliance and get MLAs. Although there are talented Christians in every party, there is no recognition of them. In the middle, when the DMK-backed Congress-led coalition government was in power, there were seven ministers from Tamil Nadu. Not a single person was a Christian. But in Kerala, even when there is no MP, a Christian is made the Union Minister by Modi. All Christian organizations function as social organizations. Not running politically. This fact is known only to the BJP; In the north-eastern states, such as Goa, many Christians in the BJP are MLAs and ministers. Thus, the Christians there are celebrating the BJP. Christians like me, who have realized that the BJP is not an anti-Christian party, are supporting the BJP.”

While popular opinion is that the BJP is a pro-Hindutva party, it is to be noted that behind the facade of secularism, there lies the ugly truth of communal politics that is being carried out by the Dravidian parties, Thiagarajan said.

Border villages in Tamil Nadu turned into dumpyards of poultry waste by Kerala govt

The Kerala government has come under scrutiny for dumping tons of poultry/meat wastes, especially the remains of slaughtered cows in TN villages near Radhapuram, Tirunelveli. This has become a looming menace for the residents of the Radhapuram region, where the dumping of waste is being done with scant regard by Kerala government.

Residents have come forward to complain that the waste that is being dumped has been emitting an extremely foul odour, leaving the citizens to gasp for air. In addition to this, this has become a breeding ground for pathogens and mosquitoes, acting as the hub for disease spread.

As recent as the 28th of February, a lorry bearing the Kerala registration plate dumped about 3 tonnes of poultry waste on the Radhapuram border. Despite the local police having been brought to notice about the issue, they did little to combat the problem, and instead fined them ₹5000 and let them go without filing an FIR. The Health Department also did nothing to take stock of the situation. Last year, lorries that had attempted to dump poultry waste near Kudankulam was caught red-handed and a fine of ₹1 lakh was imposed by the local police. When they took this to the court, the justice let them go for a fine of ₹10,000 instead.

Notably, Tamil Nadu isn’t the only neighbour being exploited by Kerala government as Karnataka faced a similar plight recently. It has been illegally dumping hazardous biomedical waste and animal waste in Karnataka, jeopardising the lives of locals and polluting the environment in Kodagu, Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts.
