Tamil Nadu government sets up oxygen shortage helpline

In the recent standard procedures to be followed that were released by the Tamil Nadu state government, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also released a helpline number for reporting oxygen shortage. This number, 104, will connect to a 24*7 helpline, which will resolve issues faced by hospitals over oxygen shortage.

Since a lot of cases have been reported so far in terms of oxygen shortage all over the country, this initiative of the Tamil Nadu government was welcomed by the public.

In addition to this, the CM also asked industries that are currently producing oxygen to look for ways to increase their production to meet the demand and not look to make a profit in times of crisis like this.

Indonesia confirms its submarine KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk, crew of 53 lost at sea

Indonesian navy on Saturday (24 April) has confirmed that their missing submarine KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk killing 53 crew members aboard.

The rescue ships had spotted the presence of an oil slick as well as debris near the submarine’s last dive on Wednesday (21 April) off the island of Bali. Several pieces and parts from inside the sub have been recovered.

Navy Chief Yudo Margono told a press conference in Bali, “If it’s an explosion, it will be in pieces. The cracks happened gradually in some parts when it went down from 300 meters to 400 meters to 500 meters … If there was an explosion, it would be heard by the sonar.”

As per the Indonesian Navy, what likely transpired was the submarine sank to a depth of 600-700 meters (2,000-2,300 feet) when the maximum it could dive was only 200 meters (655 feet), i.e. crush depth.

The hulls of a submarine are designed to withstand a certain level of water pressure when it dives, however, when a submarine dives below its capacity, the water pressure would be greater than the hull could withstand leading to cracks and eventual implosion.

The KRI Nanggala 402 was a German-designed diesel-powered submarine and it has been in the service of the Indonesian Navy since 1981.

“Even if 1000 people die, we won’t let Sterlite open”, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan says

At a time when the number of COVID cases has been rising across the state and the country with oxygen coming under high demand, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan has issued a clarion call instigating people to create social unrest in the state.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of India had accepted for urgent hearing of the offer from Vedanta to produce and supply 1000 tons of medical oxygen per day from its sealed Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi. The Central Government on its part told the Supreme Court that Sterlite Copper Factory can be opened to produce medical oxygen to meet the oxygen demand.

However, the Thoothukudi Collector hurriedly organized a public hearing in Thoothukudi to gauge public opinions on the offer of support from Vedanta. During the hearing, those in favour of opening the factory and the anti-Sterlite group engaged in a clash with the Collector ultimately passing a resolution against opening the factory based on ‘majority opinion’.

On the same day (April 23), VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan said in a tweet that the Modi government must abandon efforts to open Sterlite ‘in the guise of manufacturing’. He further went on to instigate people saying that ‘Even if 1000 of us die, we won’t let Sterlite open’ should be the battle cry.

His tweet has come under severe condemnation from netizens of being insensitive and playing politics at a crucial time.

Man who stole temple idols sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

A Salem court in Tamil Nadu has sentenced one Santhosh Das to 10 years imprisonment for stealing precious idols from the Jain Kashi Siddhantha Mandira located in Moodbidri.

The incident took place on July 6, 2013, when the accused stole 15 gold and diamond-studded idols from the shrine in Moodbidri. Also, during the investigation, it emerged that Das had participated in more than 40 other temple thefts.

“I am happy about the verdict. He should get life imprisonment. Because, even after he was out on bail he continued to indulge in many theft cases, irrespective of the religious centres. The government of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka should consider this as a special case, and the accused should be brought to Karnataka. As of now, officials of the police department are citing technical problem. He is a habitual offender, hence, the government should take his crime as a serious offence.” Sri Sri Swasthisri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Pandithacharayavariya Swamiji of Jain Math, Moodbidri was quoted saying in a report

The idols were sculpted in the 10th century and were worth crores of rupees. The burglary was reportedly planned and executed as the CCTV cameras of the temple were destroyed by the accused.

The temple housed 52 priceless antiques inside a glass enclosure called Siddhanta Mandira. Investigation revealed that none of the security staff was near the CCTV monitor during the theft.

However, the police were able to get their hands on one CCTV footage when it emerged that only one person wearing a mask entered the room and stole the idols. The accused used a gas cutter to gain entry but surprisingly even with that much noise Das managed to escape successfully with the idols but had left behind the gas cutter and a portable cylinder.

“India needs air, but we don’t care”: How a bunch of ‘activists’ are holding people to ransom in times of crisis

India is witnessing one of its worst public health crisis in recent history. As of today, it has experienced its highest-ever surge of COVID cases, with 3.46 lakh cases recorded in just 24 hours across the country This issue has been exacerbated by the paucity of oxygen in critical hotspots, starving patients of life-saving options and severely reducing chances of survival.

While the government is firing on all cylinders in its search for oxygen stocks and production plants to cope with the rising demand, the Supreme Court on Thursday also took suo moto cognizance of the issue as well. On Friday, it urgently accepted for urgent hearing the offer from Vedanta to produce and supply 1000 tons of medical oxygen per day from its sealed Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi which would be immensely helpful in meeting the current and future oxygen needs.

However, hours before the Supreme Court was to hear the matter, the Thoothukudi Collector hurriedly organized a public hearing in Thoothukudi to gauge public opinions on the offer of support from Vedanta.

Not a single actual representative from the community was featured in the original list of invitees to the hearing. Instead, the list included exclusively anti-Sterlite protestors and members of political fronts, all of whom had featured in agitations against the plant in the past. Some of them were known members of left-leaning organizations.

Shortly after the Supreme Court signaled its intent to hear Vedanta’s proposal, local activist Fathima Babu said to media persons “If the plant is allowed to reopen, we will again have a massive and violent protest. There is no shortage of oxygen and no need for Sterlite.”

On top of this, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan instigated in a tweet that even if a thousand people die, they won’t allow the reopening of Sterlite.

As is to be expected, the ‘public meeting’ rapidly devolved into a public spectacle as the anti-Sterlite protestors resorted to sloganeering and arguments with the police and district authorities.

“The few community members who were brave enough to recognize the criticality of oxygen crisis and supported resumption of the oxygen plant were heckled by the protestors even before they could voice their opinion. Once the protestors started to pelt stones, the police tried to control the situation by moving the attendees supporting the oxygen plant to a safe location.” one of the persons who was present at the meeting told The Commune.

“There was also not a single current panchayat representative, MP or MLA invited to the meeting, nor were any medical or public experts invited. Rather than even featuring elected representatives to participate in a so-called ‘public’ hearing, the administration indulged in a sham exercise for the sole purpose of painting a convenient narrative of public anger.” he further added.

Oxygen availability has become a pressing issue across states now. It will decide how India will cope with the second wave of the virus and is turning out to be critical for the survival of COVID patients. Recognizing this need, countries have rallied to offer help to India in some form or other. Germany has agreed to airlift 23 oxygen plants to India, while an NGO in Pakistan has offered to send 50 ambulances and support personnel to India immediately. Countries are opening up their borders and coffers to ensure that any possible help is provided urgently.

“At a time when the entire nation and global community is joining hands to battle the crisis, why is Tamil Nadu not stepping up? By indulging in utterly petty political games at a time when the nation is struggling, the Tamil Nadu government is simply risking the lives of India citizens and losing any moral right for aid for its own needs.” said the person who wised to remain unidentified.

It is abominable to continue citing law and order issues as a reason for not running a 1000 ton per day oxygen plant at this critical time. What has the State government then been doing for the past three years when the plant has remained closed? Why has it failed to identify and tackle these rogue activists and NGOs with vested interests? Even during the Thoothukudi protests in 2018, it was the heavy handed response of the administration that led to the tragic deaths of protestors, rather than the operations of the company. Now once again, the administration is failing miserably to reign in lumpen elements who are holding lives and livelihoods hostage. It is now simply seeking to repeat history by absolving itself of all responsibility and passing the buck onto a private corporation. By enabling and giving a platform to mischievous elements at this time rather than assuring the Centre of all support, the Tamil Nadu government is no less culpable than the so-called activists in unleashing terror in the community.

DMK alliance partner Vaiko condemns inclusion of Indian culture in curriculum, wants glorification of Mughal invasion

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko in a statement said that the BJP Central Government is staging a conspiracy to ‘saffronize’ education sector amid the corona virus pandemic. In his statement he alleged that ‘Hindutva’ principles of the RSS are being infused in school and college syllabus.

“Schools were closed due to corona pandemic during the last 2020-21 academic year. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had announced that it will reduce the workload of students, citing the fact that classes are conducted through the internet. Lessons from CBSE textbooks for grades 9 through 12 were reduced by 30 percent.”, he said.

He also said that chapters on federalism, civil rights, nationalism and secularism were completely removed from the 11th grade political science subjects along with chapters on Indian Democracy, Social Organization and Social Processes in the sociology course.

“Thus in the wake of the removal of the subjects the agenda of the RSS was exposed. Now, the curriculum for the undergraduate history course, which has now been approved and recommended by the University Grants Committee in the same context, is being done in the same context.”, Vaiko said.

He said that the elements of ‘Hindutva’ principles of the RSS like Vedas, Upanishads, Smritis and Puranas have been included in the syllabus.

“The first chapter of the old syllabus of the undergraduate history curriculum of Delhi University is about the early history of India. But now the first part of the new syllabus talks about the ‘Conceptualization of Bharatvarsha’. Vedic texts such as the Vedas, Vedantas, Upanishads, Smritis and Puranas are being called as ‘eternity of Bharat’.” he said.

“In the third paper, the early period of history till 550 BC is referred as ‘Sindhi-Saraswati Civilization – its rise, fall and continuity’. Saraswati is a river mentioned in Puranas. There is no history or archaeological proof for it.”, Vaiko said in his statement.

“The mythical Saraswati River which the RSS Sanatana organizations consider as true history has now been infused in the syllabus”, Vaiko further added.

He also expressed dismay at Ramayana and Mahabharat being given importance and alleged that Muslim rule in India has been downplayed where Muslim kings have been called ‘invaders’.

“The seventh paper which was hitherto titled ‘Indian Society’ has been split into two – Hindu Society and Muslim society talking about the caste, occupation groups, lifestyle, customs, traditions of the communities.” he said.

He also said that lessons on Dalit politics that was there in the existing syllabus has now been removed.

“The ‘1857’ soldier’s revolt was called the ‘First War of Independence’ by the leader of the Hindu Maha Sabha, V.D. What Savarkar described is included in the lesson as it is. Prior to that, the Sanyasi Rebellion in Bengal, the Paika Rebellion in Odia and the Vellore Revolution in Tamil Nadu have not been included.” Vaiko alleged adding further that the 1905 partition of Bengal and its related incidents has been removed wantedly.

He also alleged that the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. Ambedkar have been ignored.

“It is highly reprehensible that the syllabus for the Bachelor of History degree has been changed to suit the Hindu Sanatan doctrine. The fascist tendency that paves the way for saffron ideology in the field of education must be stopped immediately.”, he said.

VCK chief Thirumavalavan peddles anti-mask rhetoric, says he does not believe wearing masks can prevent COVID

At a time when the number of COVID cases has been rising exponentially across the state and the country, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan has said that he does not believe that wearing masks can prevent the spread of the disease.

In an interview to a Tamil YouTube Channel named ‘Tamil Kelvi’, the Chidambaram MP said that wearing face masks does not prevent the spread or protect people from the disease and that the face masks themselves are like a virus net.

“I have a difference of opinion with respect to wearing face masks. Face masks are not a filter. It does have the ability to kill the virus. We are ‘rough using’ the masks. We are touching it with our hands, we are pulling it below. It touches the mouth and nose. We are wearing the masks like a virus net and we are getting the virus. In a way, it is getting misused. Hence, I don’t believe that wearing face masks can prevent the spread and protect people from the virus.”, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan was telling Senthilvel, the anchor who was ousted from News 18 Tamil Nadu.

Many states across India are under the grip of the second wave of the pandemic with the health infrastructure facing extreme pressure due to rising patients. Some of the hospitals in the country face oxygen shortage due to patient overload.

Doctors, nurses, government officials and members of the civil society have been stressing on the importance of wearing masks, washing hands with soap, maintaining social distancing while venturing out and vaccinating in order to curtail the spread of the virus.

Many netizens condemned the statements Thol. Thirumavalavan who is not just a leader of a party but also a people’s representative for Chidambaram Lok Sabha constituency.

DMK sympathizer masquerading as ‘neutral’ tech entrepreneur caught peddling half-truths and fake data again

Suresh Sambandam, the CEO of a company named ‘Kissflow’ and the unofficial brand ambassador of the DMK, who was recently caught peddling half-truths and lies (check here and here), is at it once again. This time, the ‘tech entrepreneur’ has fudged data about the number of doctors available in different states of India to its population.

In a tweet, the DMK sympathizer had shared a picture which claimed that the ratio of number of people and number of doctors for Tamil Nadu was 253:1 while for Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh it was 2092:1 and 3767:1 respectively, in order to take a jibe at the two states which are currently under BJP rule. The picture had watermark of one Arockia Edwin, the DMK Union Secretary of Nanguneri East.

We better celebrate this achievement that happened because of last 50 years. If anyone speaks ill about Tamilnadu slap this in their face. #dreamtn @dreamtamilnadu”, he said in his tweet.

According to the latest data available (31st December 2020), there are 148,216 registered doctors in Tamil Nadu while Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have 71,348 and 89286 registered doctors respectively.

When weighed against population, the ratio of number of doctors to the state population turns out to be 1:525 for Tamil Nadu, 1:895 for Gujarat and 1:2664 for Uttar Pradesh.

Both Tamil Nadu and Gujarat fulfil the doctor population ratio of 1:1000 prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is to be remembered that Uttar Pradesh came under the rule of BJP only in 2017.

It would be impossible to come up with the number as claimed by Suresh Sambandam except if he is part of a Whatsapp group of Murasoli readers.

Many data enthusiasts on Twitter too called out the fake numbers put out by the DMK sympathizer.

This is not the first time Suresh Sambandam has been caught peddling lies. Earlier, he exposed his shallow knowledge on history, politics and economy in an interview with ‘Neeya Naana’ Gopinath to Behindwoods YouTube channel. Very recently he had peddled false news about the farmer empowerment laws where he said that Minimum Support Price would be scrapped and that key farm items would be removed from the ‘Essential Commodities’ which was busted by The Commune.

Now once again, Suresh Sambandam has proved himself to be nothing more than a Murasoli reader who is wise enough to fabricate data in order to portray DMK as the pioneer of development politics.
