MGR statue found broken in Tiruchirapalli

The MGR statue in the Marakkadai area in Tiruchirapalli was found broken a couple of days back. AIADMK leaders, including former minister Vellamandi N. Natarajan, had expressed condemnation over the incident. They also lodged a complaint with the Gandhi Market Police, asking them to find the culprits and take appropriate action. AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam and AMMK’s general secretary TTV Dinakaran also condemned the incident.

In this context, District Collector S. Divyadarshini told reporters on May 10 that when the Election Commission’s code of conduct came into force, the statues of all political party leaders in Trichy district were wrapped in cloth and the cloth wrapped around the statues was removed after the election code of conduct came to an end. She went on to say that when removing the cloth wrapped around the 26-year-old cement MGR statue in the Marakkadai area, CCTV camera recordings revealed that the right arm of the statue had been accidentally broken in the wrist area. She went on to say that the statue was not damaged by outsiders.

Since the statue was damaged while the government was doing its work, the damage will be repaired immediately by the Public Works Department as per the order of the Chief Minister.

She added that iron bars will soon be set up for the statues of all political party leaders across the district, including the Trichy Corporation. If a new statue is to be erected in the district, permission must be obtained from the relevant local administration and the district administration.

Kerala withholds oxygen supply to Tamil Nadu despite Centre’s ruling

Recently, the Centre allocated 40 MT of oxygen from Inox Kanjikode in Kerala to Tamilnadu, to combat the lack of oxygen in the state. This order has now been overruled by the state of Kerala.

A statement that was issued by VP Joy, the Chief Secretary of Kerala, described that under the disaster management act, 150 MT of oxygen would go to the state of Kerala. It is to be noted that the entire capacity of the plant is 170 MT.

Following this, the Centre had issued a directive to stop the supply to Karnataka but continue the supply of 40 MT of oxygen to Tamilnadu for 4 days between May 9 and 12. While INOX Kanjikode was to supply 40 MT of oxygen to Tamilnadu and 20 MT of oxygen to Karnataka under the order of the Centre, this allocation had been revised after the new directive.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a new order following the revision, stating that the state will not be able to send oxygen to Tamil Nadu as the demand in their state was increasing and that the rising number of patients needed oxygen. He added that this puts a lot of strain on the state’s oxygen stock and so, they would be unable to meet that demand if exported.

It is to be noted that only recently, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin had asked the Centre for oxygen following which this revised directive was issued. While Kerala has conveniently ignored the directive from the Centre, it has also ungratefully forgotten the aid that Tamilnadu offered to Kerala during the disastrous Kerala floods.

NCTP South Representative writes to MK Stalin about discrimination faced by transgenders in getting COVID treatment and vaccines

Gopi Shankar Madurai, the Southern Representative of the National Council for Transgender Persons has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to address the discrimination faced by transgender persons in getting treatment for COVID19 as well as access to vaccines.

In his letter, Gopi said that the pandemic has wrecked the lives and livelihoods of transgender and intersex people adding that it was not possible for them to get quality healthcare anyway.

“During the second wave, I have received several complaints from transgender people across different states of South India highlighting the discrimination faced by them while getting treatment for COVID-19. They are being subjected to discrimination from doctors as they are not getting the required medical attention. There have been several news reports regarding the same. Further, it is also important to take note of the health needs of transgender people living with serious diseases and ensure that their access to medicine is not impaired.” Gopi said in his letter.

He urged the CM to allocate 5 beds exclusively for transgenders in each district citing Section 16 (f) of the Transgender Persons Act, 2019 which mandates the government to facilitate access to transgender persons in hospitals and other healthcare institutions and centres.

He also asked the CM to arrange special vaccination drives for transgender people drawing attention to the fact that there is little or no awareness among the transgender community regarding vaccination.

“Your action today will determine how many transgender people will be able to get the much-needed medical attention and will be vaccinated and this at a time when a solidaristic, humanitarian and accountable response is being called for to save people and their futures.”, Gopi said concluding his letter.

Lancet’s hitjob article on PM Modi was written by a Chinese

As the second wave of the Wuhan virus ravages India, international medical journal The Lancet on Saturday (8 May) published what one would call a politically biased article targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Coronavirus crisis in India.

According to this reputed medical journal, Modi is responsible for this crisis as every other political party have been exempted from judgement.

Many national and international news papers along with network news like the CNN are having a go at Modi so he could be undermined. It must also be noted that after the abrogation of Article 370, The Lancet had issued a strong condemnation of the Indian Government.

This article about the Modi Government’s handling of the pandemic was written by one Helena Hui Wang, who is the Lancet’s Asia editor based in Beijing. This article was being used by the Congress party to slam the Modi government.

Many Indians on social media lashed out at Lancet for its hitjob article on India and Prime Minister Modi.

What is sadly amazing is that the article is full of inaccuracies and even a layperson could interpret that this is a poorly executed hatchet job.

The article says, “India must reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission as much as possible while the vaccine is rolled out. As cases continue to mount, the government must publish accurate data in a timely manner, and forthrightly explain to the public what is happening and what is needed to bend the epidemic curve, including the possibility of a new federal lockdown.”

The Lancet argues for a national lockdown when the vast majority of India is already under partial or full lockdown and it is a known fact that lockdown are not a economically viable solution.

“The reducing positivity rate is a signal that Delhi has reached the peak of infections. Now, whether the current reduction is because of the lockdown, we cannot know for sure. This could be the natural progression of the disease; any infection can spread only to a certain extent before coming down. Lockdown, if properly implemented, prevent interfamily transmissions giving hospitals a breather – allowing them to arrange beds, oxygen, medicines etc,” Dr Jacob John, former head of the department of virology at the Christian Medical College-Vellore, was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying.

But the There are fundamental issues with the sources cited by The Lancet in the article as well. It says at one point, “The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates that India will see a staggering 1 million deaths from COVID-19 by Aug 1.”

However, Lancet is not the only international publication peddling baised news,  Bloomberg had also criticised India’s vaccine strategy.

The Bloomberg article says, “Starting May 1, everyone over 18 is eligible for a vaccine while state governments and private hospitals can purchase doses directly from manufacturers for people from 18 to 45 years — triggering a desperate free-for-all rush to secure shots from an already strapped market.”

Also, the Kumbh Mela became the sacrifical lamb for its mass gatherings which has given such news organisations more ammunition.

Qatar based Al Jazeera which is left-Islamist news channel filed news reports by citing unverified “Indian media” leading to rumours that could jeopardise the battle against Covid and waste resources in the process.

The Lancet used such frevilous report by NYT which claimed “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government has seemed more intent on removing criticism on Twitter than trying to control the pandemic.” But the gact the government had asked Twitter to remove only those tweets that peddled hoaxes denying the existence of the Coronavirus and shared photographs of burning funeral pyres unrelated to the current crisis.

I-PAC to cull 85 per cent of staff as PK sets out for Bihar to chart his political career

More than 85 per cent of employees working in Indian-Political Action Committee (IPAC) founded by Prashant Kishor will be removed from their job, as per a report by Sunday Guadian Live.

This news comes days after Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in the West Bengal assembly elections.

The call to cull 85 per cent of his employees would mean that nearly 900 people who were part of the campaigning team in West Bengal assembly elections now stand to remain unemployed amid COVID.

The IPAC team consists of around 879 people, out of which 479 are core team members, and 400 employees were hired on a contract basis. As of now, Kishore’s organisation will only employ more than 150 members and have informally communicated to the contract employees that they would receive termination letters by email in the coming days.

After a successful campaign in West Bengal, I-PAC has told its employees that they should not expect any kind of job or favour from the West Bengal government and advised them to look for other opportunities.

However, most of the employees, who will be without a job had high hopes that the IPAC would retain them to assist the Mamata Banerjee-led government and provide “consultancy” after being attached with state government agencies.

Those who have been told to leave were reportedly given one month’s paid leave as the core team will move to Punjab a month later to assist Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government for the February 2022 polls.

In another development, IPAC has already started the process of recruiting people for “campaign management” in Bihar, a state which is ruled by the NDA coalition.

Kishor, who is from Bihar and has considerable experience of working in Bihar, is aiming to chart his career as a political leader in Bihar. He had also worked with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who had appointed him as the Vice-President of JDU.

TN HR&CE dept issues notice inviting ‘applications’ for apointment of Vaishanavite Guru ‘Jeeyar’

Just days after the DMK coming to power, the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department has issued a notice calling applications for the appointment of ‘Jeeyar’, the religious pontiff of the Vaishnava sampradaya.

The 50th pontiff of the Srirangam Ranganathar Temple Ranujar Madam, Srimad Sriranga Narayana Jiyar Swamigal attained samadhi on 11th July 2018 at 3:00 pm. Since then, the position of Jeeyar has remained vacant.

In this light on 6th May 2021, the HR&CE department issued a circular calling ‘applications’ for the post of Jeeyar saying that those belonging to the Thengalai sect and well versed in the Vedas, Agamas, Naalayira Divyaprabandham, and other temple traditions and rituals can apply till 4:00 PM, 8th of June.

After the circular came to light, many Hindus were aghast and expressed strong opinion against the HR&CE department’s move.

Many practicing Hindus especially those of the Vaishnava sampradaya questioned as to why the government was interfering with Hindu traditions and customs alone. “Will the government have the guts to appoint the Cardinal or Archbishop of the Church or the Maulvi for a Mosque?”, asked a person who wished to be unidentified.

Senior BJP leader H Raja strongly condemned the move the government. He wrote on his Twitter page, ‘The first anti-Hindu act of the anti-Hindu government. The attempt to appoint the Jeeyar by the government is atrocious. Will these enemies of the Hindushave the courage to appoint a Cardinal Archbishop? There seems to be no other option but to come to the streets and fight. ‘

China ‘constructs’ 3 villages in an area historically understood as Bhutan’s

In a clear violation of the agreement reached between China and Bhutan under the terms of China’s founding treaty with Bhutan, Beijing is “building” three new villages in an area understood as Bhutanese since 2015.

As of now two of the villages are already occupied and the other is still under construction. Beijing has constructed many buildings in the territory that has been understood as Bhutan’s.

The new village has been named as Gyalaphug in Tibetan or Jieluobu in Chinese in the south of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), an investigative Foreign Policy report has said.

The real motive behind China building these new villages is to force the Bhutanese government to cede territory that China wants elsewhere in Bhutan. The territory eyed by China has strategic military importance and will give Beijing an upper hand in the region.

“By mirroring in the Himalayas the provocative tactics it has used in the South China Sea, Beijing is risking its relations with its neighbours, whose needs and interests it has always claimed to respect, and jeopardizing its reputation worldwide,” Robert Barnett, the author of the Foreign Policy report said.

In 2017, Beijing tried to build a road in the Doklam plateau, a trijunction between India, China, and Bhutan that led to a 73-day face-off between Chinese and Indian troops.
