Indian man who was arrested in Pakistan for going to visit his girlfriend returns home after 4 years

An Indian man who crossed the border into Pakistan to see his girlfriend whom he had connected with Facebook was arrested and put behind bars for 4 years without anyone to bail him out. Prasanth hails from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and works as a programmer in Hyderabad, Telangana. He has been in love with a Pakistani woman with whom he had connected on Facebook.

In order to visit his girlfriend, Prasanth had attempted to enter Pakistan illegally in 2017 to see her in person. Before he could get to his girlfriend, the Pakistani police arrested him and he was imprisoned in Islamabad. His father Babu Rao had lodged a complaint with the Cyberabad Madhapur police after his son had not returned home for 2 years. Prasanth had lied at home that he was going to Pakistan for work. A case was registered in April 2019 regarding Prasanth’s disappearance.

In this situation, the video taken on the cell phone of Prashanth, who was imprisoned and was unable to leave Pakistan, went viral on social media. Baburao’s father has appealed to the Cyberabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar to release him immediately, pointing out that the video has gone viral and that his son Prasanth was suffering in Pakistan.

Citing this, Sajjan, Hyderabad’s Commissioner of Police, wrote a letter to the state government and the Ministry of External Affairs. On the basis of this letter, the Indian Foreign Ministry officials spoke to the Indian embassy officials in Pakistan and took immediate action to rescue Prashanth.

In light of the same, the government of Pakistan agreed to hand over Prashanth to India. Accordingly, the Pakistani authorities handed over Prashant to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border. Following this, Prashanth was brought to Hyderabad on Wednesday evening after four years of continuous efforts by the family and arrived in his hometown of Visakhapatnam on Thursday. The family, overjoyed at his arrival, gave him a grand welcome. They also expressed their gratitude to all those who tried to release him.

Dalit Catholics express disappointment over Vatican’s appointment of non-Dalit as Bishop of Salem

Dalit Catholics in Salem have expressed dismay over the Vatican appointing a bishop of non-Dalit origin in a Dalit-majority diocese in Salem, Tamil Nadu.

On May 31, Pope Francis appointed Father Arulselvam Rayappan of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore as the next bishop of Salem.

Father Rayappan, 60, is currently the professor and director of the Centre for Canon Law Studies at St. Peter’s Pontifical Institute in Bengaluru.

Disappointed with the appointment, Father Z. Devasagaya Raj, former secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) office of Dalits and backward classes said, “People are disappointed by the appointment of a non-Dalit bishop for Salem Diocese because they have been demanding the appointment of a Dalit.”

Mathew, the convener of Tamil Nadu’s All Dalit Christian Movements Coalition, accused the Vatican of nepotism in the current appointment.

While accusing the Vatican of casteism and nepotism in the recent appointment, Mathew said, “It looks like some kind of nepotism is going on because the newly appointed bishop of Salem is the cousin of Bishop Peter Abir Antonysamy of Sultanpet, who is also the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. They both belong to the same caste, parish, and village. It reminds us of the medieval Church. Are we going forward or backward?”

Another Dalit Christian activist, M. Mary John, head of the Dalit Christian Liberation Movement, stated that the movement has been demanding Dalit bishops in the state for the last three decades and that the newest appointment is a significant setback.

John expressed his disappointment with the latest appointment, saying, “We have full proof of writing letters to the nuncio and other bishops urging them to appoint a Dalit bishop whenever a post is vacant, but unfortunately it was not even considered. It is very surprising and dejecting that after hearing and promising to grant our request, the higher authorities did not even take note of it.”

Biden on the eve of Tiananmen Square massacare blacklists 59 companies that do business with Chinese military

On the eve of the Tiananmen Square massacare a significant development and policy shift has been initiated by U.S President Joe Biden as he issued an executive order on Thursday (Jun 3) banning Americans from investing in several Chinese companies that has ties to the Chinese military.

This executive order will put a lot of pressure on China as it directly prohibits Americans from engaging in the purchase or sale of any publicly traded securities of the 59 blacklisted companies.

The other blow for China is the ban from investing in funds that contain Chinese securities in their portfolios and many policy experts see this as the continuity of the hawkish approach adopted by his predecessor Donald Trump.

However, this decision should not come as a surprise as many companies in America have accused China of stealing intelllectual property and in turn it uses that information to boost its military, intelligence, and other security research and development programs.

By banning Americans from investing in several Chinese companies or those with close ties to the Chinese military or those selling surveillance technology that “facilitate repression or serious human rights abuses” China will feel the pressure.

The ban will take effect on Aug 2.

The executive order prohibits investment in 59 Chinese companies including telecom behemoth Huawei and largest chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC and China General Nuclear Power Corp and plastic pipe maker Aerosun Corp.

The order provides a one-year period for Americans already invested in the firms—either directly or via mutual and index or other funds—to divest themselves.

“This E.O. allows the United States to prohibit – in a targeted and scoped manner – U.S. investments in Chinese companies that undermine the security or democratic values of the United States and our allies.” a White House statement said.

The previous Trump administration frequently used the entity list to target Chinese industries, from telecom equipment giants Huawei Technologies and ZTE over sanction violations, to surveillance camera maker Hikvision over suppression of China’s Uighur minority.

In Oct 2019, when Donald Trump was president the U.S announced that it was blocking a group of leading Chinese technology companies from buying US-made goods on the grounds of complicity in perpetrating human rights abuses in the Xinjiang province of China due to the “brutal suppression” of Uygur Muslims and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang province.

There are several credibal reports of China detaining more than a million ethnic Uygurs in state-run ‘concentration camps’ which they call reeducation centers. There are reports that several Uygur Muslim women have been subjected to rape and forced strelization.

The list also included leaders in facial recognition technology, SenseTime Group, and Megvii Technology, as well as other companies that specialise in voice recognition and data – iFlytek, Xiamen Meiya Pico Information, and Yixin Science and Technology.

India is an indestructible union of destructible states

Recently, Tamil Nadu regional leaders have started calling the ‘Central’ government as the ‘Union’ government. Not just in their words, but also in their official press statements, the leaders use the term ‘Union’ to refer to the central government. But why is it only now that this new ‘union’ is being used? Many messages are said to be hidden inside this one word. These leaders use the word ‘union’ to dismiss the idea of India as a single country. They claim India is a union of ‘many nations’.

The question of whether the term “union” is appropriate may arise. It is quite okay to use the term. Even the official press releases from the Government of India calls itself as the Union Government.

However, the problem with the DMK and its sympathizers calling it as ‘Union’ government is that there lies a separatist undercurrent. The problem is separatist thought, such as the implication of a separate Tamil country or a separate Dravidian country in the usage of the phrase ‘union.’

Names such as the United States of America, European Union, United Arab Emirates, Soviet Union have different undertones. These names refer to the confederation of various provinces, countries, and regions. For example, the European Union is a federation of different European nations and a nation can leave the Union if it wants to. A nation part of the European Union has he right to secede but in India, the states do not have the right to secede.

New Trend

After winning the Tamil Nadu Assembly election in May 2021, the DMK and its allies, with the exception of Congress, refer to the Central government as the Union government. It is true that Article 1 of the Indian Constitution refers to India (Bharat) as a “Union of States.”

According to B.R. Ambedkar, there is an underlying reason for the Indian Constitution chose to use “Union of States” instead of “Federation of States” even though the constitution is federal in structure- 1. The Indian federation is not the result of an agreement among the states like the American federation 2. The States have no right to secede from the federation.

The term “Union” is used because India is indestructible and only for the sake of convenience of administration India is divided into several states. Parliament can dismiss a state government using the provision under Article 356 of the Indian constitution, which implies that states are a subordinate structure to the Parliament.

Unions such as the USSR, the United States of America, and the United Arab Emirates are destructible unions of indestructible states. The Indian Union, on the other hand, is an indestructible union of destructible states. It means that parliament can pass legislation to reduce, increase, or modify the boundary of states. The country exists without the states and states on its own do not exist. This is one of the fundamental premise of the Indian constitution.

The only issue with referring to the central government as a union government is the idea behind this realization of constitution definition, and many ministers continue to claim that the central government does not exist without states and that the central government does not have voters on its own.

These regional leaders, who wish to implant separatist seeds in the minds of the younger generation, keep referring to India as a “Union.” Regrettably, the mainstream media is also hyping this terrible behavior by regional leaders.

Indian Army to acquire six Heron unmanned drone from Israel to keep surveillance on China

As news of China’s People’s Liberation Army reinforcing its positions in eastern Ladakh has emerged, the Indian Army could soon get six Heron Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) on lease from Israel.

Heron is a multi-role drone, with mission endurance of around 30 hours and a range of over 1,000 kilometer and this drone which could also be easily armed will be deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to monitor Chinese activities in areas along the frontier.

This drone is designed to carry out various strategic missions, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance, and is equipped with Satellite Communications for Beyond Line of Sight ranges.

The Indian Army and the Indian Air Force already operate a large fleet of Heron drones, which are currently being upgraded with the latest systems, including new communication links.

Because the existing fleet of Heron drones does not have a satellite communication link technology, two drones are launched with a time gap to ensure that surveillance data collected by the first one is relayed back to base through the second drone in case of long-range missions, a report says.

After the new Defence Acquisition Procedure was unveiled by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in September 2020, for the first time the Indian Army will be leasing an important defense platform.

The Indian Navy has already leased and operates two non-weaponised General Atomics Aeronautical Systems MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones from the US which were handed over at the peak of the standoff in Ladakh last year.

As of now, they are being operated by the Navy from the Arakkonam naval air station in Tamil Nadu for surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering in the Indian Ocean.

There is also a strong indication, India may also acquire 30 Predator armed drones from the US through the US Foreign Military Sales route and the lead agency for this procurement, the Indian Navy is likely to approach the Defence Ministry to get in-principle approval.

Late in the night, the hastag had crossed 3 lakh tweets.

The DMK under Karunanidhi is guilty of several other corruption charges and failures. The party was part of the biggest ever corruption case in the history of India – 2G spectrum case. Karunanidhi in order to save his seat, went soft on the UPA government headed by its alliance partner Congress, by organizing lip service protests while thousands of Tamils in Sri Lanka were killed in the civil war in Sri Lanka. He is said to have undertaken the ‘fastest fast’ by starting the fast after breakfast and ending it before lunch.

The food subsidy incurred for PMGKAY, so far, is more than Rs. 9,200 Crore for May and June 2021.

Sudahanshu Pandey said that the Department is continuously reviewing the scheme and pursuing with States/UTswho are taking steps to give wide publicity about PM-GKAY III through publicity in print/ electronic media & display of banners at Fair Price Shop etc.

Emphasising the importance of ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC), Secretary, DFPD shared that it is an ambitious plan and endeavour of the Department to introduce the nation-wide portability of ration cards under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA).

He said that at present, a monthly average of about 1.35 Crore portability transactions are being recorded under ONORC plan (including intra-state transactions). Further, a total of nearly 27.8 Crore portability transactions have taken place all across States/UTs since the inception of ONORC plan from August 2019, out of which almost 19.8 Crore portability transactions have been recorded during the COVID-19 period i.e., from April 2020 to May 2021.

Given the potential of One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) plan to ensure the access to NFSA foodgrains to Migrant NFSA beneficiaries during the COVID-19 crisis, this department has been continuously pursuing with States/UTs through VC meetings/advisories/letters etc to implement the programme to its full potential by proactively reaching out to the migrant beneficiaries.

These States/UTs have been requested to undertake wide-spread publicity and awareness of the ONORC plan, 14445 toll-free number and ‘Mera Ration’ Mobile application that was recently developed by Department in association with NIC for the benefit of NFSA beneficiaries, specifically the migrant NFSA beneficiaries, in ten different languages viz. English, Hindi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati& Marathi. Efforts are afoot to include more regional languages in the ‘MeraRation’App, going forward.

While answering to one question about reduction in edible oils duty, Secretary Pandey said that the edible oil prices have already started coming down in international market and there is a 15 to 20 % shrink in demand. He said prices are continue to decline further and this trend is showing in international market too. Since, the softening of oil prices is happening and as trend shows it will continue, so there is no need to reduce the duty, he further added that the Government is reviewing the situation every week.

In reply to another question, Secretary DFPD said that in view of the COVID scenario, coverage of all eligible persons from most vulnerable & economically weaker sections of population (i.e. street dwellers, rag pickers, hawkers, rickshaw pullers, migrant labours etc.) under National Food Security Act is the foremost priority of this Department. As the operational responsibilities of identification of eligible persons/households under NFSA and issuance of ration cards to them through continuous review, rests with States/UTs. He said that the Department has issued instruction to all States/UTs on 02nd June, 2021 to launch a special drive to proactively issue NFSA ration cards to such persons without ration cards from above such categories by utilizing the available coverage under their overall NFSA limits. Out of total NFSA coverage limit of 81.35 Crore, a gap of nearly 1.97 crore can be also utilised by States/UTs for this purpose.
