Exorbitant electricity bills shocks Tamil Nadu households, TN Congress vice president urges DMK to clarify

The general public and business units in Tamil Nadu have claimed that power costs have abruptly risen in the month of June despite having low consumption due to frequent power outages.

Last May, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board announced that the electricity bill may be paid in three ways because TNEB employees would be unable to visit each home due to the COVID second wave.

According to the announcement, Consumers can pay the amount they paid in May 2019 or the amount they paid in March 2021, or they can calculate their electricity usage and pay the amount themselves. As the number of COVID cases has decreased, TNEB employees have begun to calculate power consumption directly from each home.

In this situation, several customers have claimed that their electricity bills have climbed dramatically despite their modest consumption and frequent power outages during the last three months. A user who was charged ₹ 560 in April 2020 received an electrical bill of ₹ 2506 in June 2021, according to a complaint.

In another such complaint, a daily wage worker who used to receive an electrical bill of roughly ₹ 200 every two months was now given a bill of ₹ 830 for June 2021. The unexpected increase in tariffs by the DMK government is shocking and a significant burden to middle-class families, as many workers lost their jobs during the Corona period.

According to a Coimbatore resident, “We usually pay Rs 300 for our electricity bill, however this month we got Rs 950. There have been frequent power outages in the last three months. Even the government has admitted it.   How can we have such a hefty bill when our electricity use is low due to frequent power outages?”

A businessman in Coimbatore who owns a manufacturing unit remarked, “For the month of June, we received a very high electricity bill. We are willing to pay it, but we must have a continuous power supply. How will we be able to run our business and pay our bills if there are regular power outages? In addition, we sometimes have low voltage, which hinders us from using our heavy equipment. Our machines are being harmed by frequent voltage fluctuations. We have never encountered this problem in the last ten years.”

They demanded that the DMK government should take efforts to reduce the bill and provide relief to industries that suffer from regular power disruptions.

Vazhapadi Rama Suganthan, vice president of the Tamil Nadu Congress, has urged the DMK government to clarify the method of calculating electricity bills, alleging that the cost of electricity bills has more than doubled in the last two months across Tamil Nadu.

Actress Kasthuri claimed on Twitter that she received a ₹500 bill for her flat, which had been closed for three months.

Pinarayi govt to relax restrictions for Bakrid Qurbani amid record COVID cases, Supreme Court wants Kanwar Yatra cancelled

In a sincere case of appeasment of Muslims, the Communist state of Kerala under the leadership of comrade Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has relaxed the COVID restrictions imposed in the state for allowing the Muslims to celebrate Bakrid Qurbani amid a record number of positive cases on a daily basis.

Kerala is recording 13,000 COVID cases per day on average and more than 30 per cent of national cases are being reported from this state compared to Uttar Pradesh.

However, the Indian state of Uttrakhand, where the daily average for new covid cases is just 48 has cancelled the Kanwar Yatra in anticipation of the possibility of a COVID third wave.

The decision was taken by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the best interests of the state and country. Kanwar Yatra is a yearly pilgrimage wherein hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees of Shiva, known as Kānvarias travel to places like Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of Ganges River.

However, this year amid the possibility of third wave this yatra has been cancelled and as usaul the Supreme Court which has a long history of judicial overreach when it comes to Hindu rituals and customs have said that the “Health and the Right to Life is paramount” and gave the Uttar Pradesh government time till Monday (July 19) to reconsider its decision to allow the Kanwar Yatra.

“We are, of prima facie view, that it concerns all of us and is at the heart of the fundamental Right to Life. The health of citizenry of India and right to life is paramount, all other sentiments, whether it be religious (or otherwise), are subservient to this basic fundamental right,” Justices Nariman and BR Gavai said.

“We can give you one more opportunity to consider holding yatra physically at all. This or else we pass an order. We are all Indians and this suo motu has been taken up as Article 21 applies to all of us. Either you reconsider to have it at all or we deliver,” it said.

It must also be noted that the Supreme Court had taken up the issue on its own and is now seeking answers from UP and the Centre to respond on the yatra but there is no such interference by the apex court of India when it comes to Kerala since the religion in question is Islam.

But there is no such interference from the courts in Kerala where the state government is now going to open shops and impose no restrictions for thre days as Muslims celebrate Bakri Eid even with thousands of COVID are reported every day.

Due to the state government going appeasement politics, health experts warning of a sharp increase in the cases once the restrictions are lifted.

DVAC arrests HR&CE official for amassing 41 lakh in 2 years

The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has filed an FIR against an official of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department for amassing Rs.41 lakh during his tenure as the Joint Commissioner of Kanyakumari district temples.

M.Anbumani, a lawyer by profession, joined the TN HRCE department as an assistant commissioner in 1999.  Between 15.09.2017 and 11.03.2021, he was the Joint Commissioner(JE) of Kanyakumari district temples. Several allegations of corruption and unlawful wealth accumulation were made against him with the HRCE department during this period.

The charges against Anbumani were investigated by the vigilance and anti-corruption department, which found them to be true. The amount of wealth he made as a JE from October 1, 2017, to December 31, 2019, was examined, and the bureau came to the conclusion that he had amassed assets disproportionate to his income during that period.

The disproportionate assets are estimated to be worth Rs.41 lakh by the bureau (40,90,734). An FIR was filed against Anbumani as a result of his amassing assets disproportionate to his salary while working as a government employee. Anbumani is currently the Regional Joint Commissioner for the temples of Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts.

The illegally gained wealth is reported to have been utilized by JE Anbumani to purchase property near the Kumara Kovil temple, which is administered by those who retired from HR&CE jobs. Anbumani is also accused of interfering with HR&CE-run institutions. While activists applaud the bureau’s move, Hindus remain concerned that the elephant in the room, government control of temples, which is the root of such corruption, is not being addressed.

Andhra village passes resolution to curb rising Christian conversions, illegally constructed Church to be removed

In an effort to prevent the people of Scheduled Castes (SC) from getting to Christianity with the activities of Christian missionaries, the Gurujala village in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh has passed a resolution to take series of measures.

One of the resolutions passed by the Gram Sabha of the village was to remove the unauthorized church constructed with the help of foreign funding from Christian organization International Mission Board (IMB).

The Gram Sabha has also decided to undertake an enumeration exercise to document the number of Hindus, Muslims, Christians and enter them in public record. It was also decided to ask the revenue officials to issue BC-C (SC convert to Christianity) Certificates to persons who converted to scheduled caste converts to Christianity.

Also, no religious structure will be allowed to be constructed in future, unless the same is approved by the Gram Sabha with 51% majority.

The village also decided to accord priority to Scheduled Castes in all social and cultural festivals and temple activities in the village.

Article 243(A) of the Constitution of India has enabled the State Legislatures to empower Gram Sabha by endowing them with certain statutory powers. In pursuance of Article 243 (A) of the Constitution of India, the Gram Sabha is incorporated under Section 6 of APPR Act 1994. Gram Sabha is a constitutional body and the nucleus of democratic power in the local governance system. Gram Sabha acts as a platform for peoples’ participation, maintains surveillance of various development activities implemented in the village(s), raises issues relating to the village(s) concerned, and ensures transparency and accountability in the functioning of Panchayat Raj Institutions and line departments at the grassroots level.

Speaking to The Commune, LRPF said that they will try and implement this in other villages too. “We strongly believe in the power of people in this democracy”, the head of LRPF said.

Earlier, it was reported that a huge Church had been erected on public land in Gurujala village where the Christian population was only 59 as per the 2011 Census.

Villagers who protested against illegal church construction were slapped with SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It has become routine practice for converts holding SC Certificate to slap SC/ST Atrocity Act on anyone who dared to raise voice against illegal conversions.

Aggrieved villagers wrote to the President of India and submitted a copy of the letter to District Collector seeking action against the illegally constructed IMB Church in village, rampant religious conversions targeting SCs, misuse of SC/ST Atrocities Act and action against competent authorities issuing SC Certificates to Christian converts.

Pakistan forced to admit blast that killed Chinese engineers as terror attack, scheduled CPEC meeting cancelled

After an alleged attack carried out by Tehreek Taliban Pakistan on a bus carrying Chinese engineers killing nine of them, China has postponed an important and scheduled meeting of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to be held today (16 July) following the killing of Chinese nationals. reports Livemint.

On July 14 a bus carrying Chinese nationals working in the Dasu area of Upper Kohistan district of the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was attacked which the Pakistani government downplayed, calling it “mechanical failure” in the bus.

However, after China did not agree to the Pakistan version of mechanical failure, it is now being deemed as a “cowardly attack”.

TeeChinese engineers and construction workers were on their way to build a dam as part of the $60 billion CPEC n the western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The Dusa hydropower plant is part of the CPEC under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

China immediately called for severe punishment against those behind the blast and the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong has also urged that the “truth must be found” which could prove to be very uncomfortable for the Islamic State of Pakistan.

The explosion has sent a shockwave in Beijing due to the high number of Chinese casualties and Beijing is also sending a cross-department workgroup to assist Pakistan on the case which means its own investigators.

After applying pressure, Information Minister of Pakistan, Fawad Chaudhry, said in a Twitter post, “Initial investigations into Dasu incident have now confirmed traces of explosives, terrorism cannot be ruled out,” thus officially ruling out accident.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “We have asked the Pakistani side to lose no time in conducting a thorough investigation, properly transfer and treat the wounded, strengthen security measures, eliminate security risks, and ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan,”.

The nationalist who still sends shivers down the spine of Dravidian demagogues

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar: A Freedom Fighter, Social Reformer, And People's Leader

The day was June 23, 1933. Kamarajar who was to contest the Virudhunagar municipal elections was kidnapped by members of the Justice Party. One of the most powerful leaders who was at that time in Sayalkudi rushed to Virudhunagar as soon as he came to know of the incident. He called the members of the Congress party and arranged for a public meeting. Speaking on the stage, the leader said “I know that some members of the Justice Party have kidnapped one of our party’s true volunteer from contesting elections. Kamaraj should come here before the meeting gets over and I leave the stage. Otherwise, those who kidnapped him will face the consequences.”

Immediately Kamarajar was dropped near the stage by those who kidnapped him. Kamarajar later came to the stage and thanked the leader.

This leader who roared and sent the members of the Justice Party with their tails between the legs is none other than Pasumpon U. Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Early Life

Born to Ukkirapandi Thevar and Indiraniammal Thevar, a young Muthuramalinga Thevar grew up under the custody of his maternal grandmother Parvathiammal as Indiraniammal died when Muthuramalingam was just 6 months old. Parvathiammal raised Muthuramalinga Thevar imparting cultural and ethical values through ancient epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavadham.

He was aided by his father’s family friend Kuzhanthaisami Pillai in his education. Right from his young age, Muthuramalinga Thevar was passionate about Tamil and its rich literature. However, his formal education came to an abrupt end when a plague broke out in Ramnad region. Though his schooling came to an end, it did not stop Thevar from learning. He read all kinds of books relating to politics, history, public affairs, religion, philosophy, Vanasastra, Ayurveda, Siddha medicine and Astrology. He even learnt Silambam (martial arts), horse riding and rifle shooting.

Thevar is also known for his eloquence in both Tamil and English and became a great public speaker.

Contribution to Indian National Movement

Thevar became a full time member of the Congress party and attended the 1927 Congress session at Madras as a volunteer when he was just 19. He became a close aide of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. When Netaji and Thevar went to the former’s house Netaji introduced Thevar to his mother as “I have brought my younger sibling to our home”.

When Gandhi had supported Pattabhi Sitaramayya to be elected as Congress President, Thevar supported Netaji who was re-elected as President during the 1939 session held at Tripuri.

Thevar played a vital role in mobilizing man-power for the Indian National Army (INA). Lakhs of men and women joined the Bose-led INA from southern districts of Madurai, Ramnad, Rameshwaram just because Thevar asked to. He even started a Tamil Weekly “Nethaji” and motivated the youth to join the INA. The impact is felt even today as one can hardly spot a family in these regions which is not connected with the INA. Even today youngsters from this region join Indian Army, thanks to Netaji and Thevar. Havaldar Palani who laid down his life during the recent Galwan Valley clash with Chinese PLA was also from Ramanathapuram.

Real Voice of the Oppressed

The Madras Presidency government brought in the Criminal Tribes Act in 1920 that branded entire communities as criminals. This oppressive Act had the backing of Justice Party (the parent organization of today’s DMK) which had pledged itself to the British. Thevar led protests against the draconian acts and mobilized people against the Act.  When the Maravars of 19 villages in Appanad were forced to register, under the CTA in 1929, Thevar led a massive campaign in the villages, urging them to defy it.

Thevar made continuous appeals and led protests for the abolition of the Criminal Tribes Act. At that time, the Justice Party which was in power in Madras Presidency, refused to repeal the Act which drew the battle line between Thevar and the Dravidian demagogues.

He believed in the Congress party and actively campaigned for it as in the hope that it will emancipate the poor and repeal the Criminal Tribes Act. But, Rajaji after becoming Chief Minister did not live up to the promise. Instead, he took positions favouring the Criminal Tribes Act. The Congress arrested Thevar several times for his labour strikes and anti-Criminal Tribes Act campaign.

It is because of this that Thevar joined the Forward Bloc flouted by Netaji.

The Criminal Tribes Act was used to exploit workers and labourers working in factories and mills. Thevar formed the Pasumalai Mahalakshmi Mills Workers Union, Madura Knitting Company Labour Union and Meenakshi Mills Textile Workers Union securing their right to work with dignity.

Thevar was also at the forefront during the temple entry movement for Dalits in Tamil Nadu. When Vaidyanatha Iyer was making arrangements for leading a group of people from the Dalit community into the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple, he was faced with opposition from orthodox sects and even had threats issued to his life. At that time, Rajaji asked Vaidyanatha Iyer to meet Thevar and request his interference for the smooth entry of Dalits into temples. Apprised of the matter, Thevar issued ‘bit notices’ across the city saying “I would be there at the entrance of the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Those who dare to prevent the Dalits entering the temple shall come and meet me. I will answer them”. This made the miscreants who had planned to attack Vaidyanatha Iyer and others to run helter skelter.

A Firebrand Nationalist

Thevar considered ‘Nationalism’ and ‘Spirituality’ as his two eyes. “Politics without divinity is a body without soul” Thevar preached to his followers. Thevar led Netaji’s Forward Bloc in Tamil Nadu and became one of the prominent nationalist voices from Tamil Nadu. With his popularity he contested in a constituency where Thevars formed only about 18,000 voters but won with a margin of 1 lakh votes. In the Parliament, he staunchly opposed the special status given to Kashmir through Article 370.

He vehemently opposed the North-South divide peddled by the Justice Party and its offsprings that exist today as DK, DMK and other Periyarist organizations.

A Sage

Thevar was a celibate and lived the life of a sage. Being born in a wealthy family, Thevar donated his wealth to the Dalit community.  Because of his deeds, he is revered as a God by the people of the region. However, with the glorification E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker by the Dravidian parties Thevar was reduced to a caste leader.

Every year on his birth cum death anniversary ‘Guru Poojai’ is observer with leaders cutting across ideologies and party lines pay respects to Muthuramalinga Thevar by. However, this occasion to celebrate the nationalist leader has been made into a photo-op by the Dravidian parties especially the DMK, who use this opportunity to appease the Thevar votebank.

Rahul Gandhi gives ultimatum to Congress workers, says those ‘afraid of BJP’ should be shown the exit door

While addressing over 3,500 Congress party’s social media volunteers from across the country in the aftermath of the party’s resounding loss in the recently concluded state assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi on Friday (16 July) said those who are afraid of BJP should be shown the exit door and urged his party members to be fearless.

“There are many fearless people, who are not in Congress. They should be brought in and the Congressmen who are afraid of BJP should be shown the exit door. We don’t need those who believe in RSS ideology. We need fearless people,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Rohan Gupta, who heads Congress’s social media department, told Hindustan Times that Rahul Gandhi was obvious that volunteers should stick to the Gandhian ideology of the party.

Gupta then went on to accuse the Modi government of curbing the voice of mainstream media and in his address to his party social media volunteers, Rahul Gandhi asked them to involve more people so that the government cannot do anything to restrain them.

“Gandhi was also very concerned about the well-being of the social media team and their families. Gandhi said that such meetings between him and social media volunteers should happen once every month or two,” Vinay Kumar Dokonia, the national co-coordinator of the party’s social media wing, said.
