‘The Hindu’ N. Ram who published doctored images on Rafale deal wants independent probe on Pegasus

The embattled managing director of The Hindu newspaper N Ram and Sashi Kumar have moved the Supreme Court for an independent probe on the alleged mass surveillance of journalists, lawyers, ministers, Opposition politicians, constitutional functionaries, and civil society activists, using military-grade Israeli spyware Pegasus.

The petition reads, “Such mass surveillance using a military-grade spyware abridges several fundamental rights and appears to represent an attempt to infiltrate, attack and destabilise independent institutions that act as critical pillars of our democratic set-up,”.

The publisher now wants full disclosure from the government on whether it had authorised surveillance to muzzle free speech and to supress dissent.

“Surveillance/interception is justified only in cases of public emergency or in the interests of public safety, and the existence of such conditions must be inferred reasonably and cannot be determined solely on the assessment of the government… The hack/interception/decryption occasioned by the Pegasus spyware constitutes a criminal offence,” the petition said.

“It can conduct extremely intrusive surveillance, including tracking and recording calls, reading text and WhatsApp messages, collecting passwords, reading emails, accessing photos and videos, activating camera and microphone and enabling them to record events, and harvesting information from apps. It can be installed as simply as by placing a call on the targeted device, even if the call is not picked up,” the petition submitted.

It must be noted that N Ram’s credibility as the publisher of the Hindu has taken a beating after the newspaper published doctored information with regards to the so-called Rafale jet scam and the newspaper recently published an article calling Bengaluru MP Tejasvi Surya ‘a virus’, and after receiving flak changed the headline.

However, it is an open secret that N Ram has nothing but contempt for the BJP and hatred for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he has still not come to terms that the Rafale fighter deal was legitimate and continues to peddle the lie.

Cover-ups, lavish spending and shady property deals: Financial embezzlements rock Vatican

On Tuesday (July 27), Vatican prosecutors have alleged that a series of jaw-dropping scandals in the biggest criminal trial in the Vatican’s modern history will be unveiled in a modified courtroom in the Vatican Museums, reports Dailymail.

One of the allegations is that a cardinal allegedly pushed an underling to lie to prosecutors, brokers and lawyers about a self-styled intelligence analyst named Cecilia Marogna who bought expensive Prada and Louis Vuitton items with the Vatican money.

She allegedly received 575,000 euros in Vatican funds meant for freeing captive priests and nuns abroad but Marogna — dubbed “the Cardinal’s lady” by the Italian press spent the money on luxury goods and hotels.

The cardinal in question who held a very powerful position and nine other people are accused of embezzling tens of millions of dollars in donations through bad investment deals with shady money managers, and apparent favours to friends and family and now face prison sentences, fines, or both if convicted.

The trial is the culmination of a two-year investigation into the Pope’s flawed 350 million-euro London real estate venture in the expensive Chelsea district that exposed the Vatican’s once-secret financial dealings and its structural dysfunction which led to the damage to the Vatican’s finances and reputation.

However, it is even more incendiary is that the prosecutors suggest that Pope Francis and his top clergy were not only aware of some of the key transactions but in some cases explicitly authorised them when they did not have full documentation or understanding the details.

Also, the Pope is the ultimate authority and his word is final and strict obedience is required of underlinings to their religious superiors, which is why many have questioned why some people were charged and others, not like a key suspect, Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, managed to avoid indictment.

It must be noted that Pope Francis is an absolute monarch who wields supreme legislative, executive, and judicial power in Vatican City.

According to the prosecution, Vatican’s top hierarchy, including Becciu’s boss and pope ally Cardinal Pietro Parolin, were in favour of the London venture, but unaware of its financial details.

Communist govt in Kerala wants to give 80% scholarship to Muslims

pinarayi vijayan kerala government sabarimala cases

The Kerala state government led by CPI(M) leader and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the assembly on Thursday (July 22) that his government would now approach the Supreme Court against the High Court order nullifying the minority scholarship ratio fixed by the state government.

The minority scholarship ratio is based on the Paloli Commission report and now, the Pinarayi government has decided to approach the apex court, the CM said while replying to the discussion of demand for grants in the assembly.

As per the fresh initiative, 80 per cent of minority scholarship will be reserved for Muslims in the state. Pinarayi Vijayan said that for those who have raised complaints, they will get their share in proportion to the population as his government has devised the formula by allocating an additional amount of INR 6.2 crore for the annual scholarship.

However, opposition leader V D Satheesan said that the state government should not use the minority scholarship issue to create a rift between religions.

Satheesan said, “If one state fails to allot sanctioned scholarships, another state will get it. Now, Uttar Pradesh will get the scholarship we have lapsed,”.

The Kerala assembly opposition leader was also very critical of the state’s Covid management strategy and Satheesan said, “The opposition will not blame the government over the number of deaths due to Covid as it has certain limitations. But the government should bring transparency in all matters related to Covid,” he said.  He also criticised the state government for transferring the woman employee who gave vital information regarding the tree felling row and cancelling her good service entry.

BS Yediyurappa, a man who never had it easy

The resignation of Rythu Bandhu (farmers friend) Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa as Chief Minister of Karnataka brings a curtain on the long and distinguished career of a people’s politician who built the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.

Showing poise, dignity, and fortitude, in a tearful speech to his supporters, Yediyurappa said, “I have decided to resign. I will meet the Governor after lunch,”. He called his last two years as the CM of the state during Covid as agnipariksha (trial by fire).

“I thank PM (Narendra) Modi, Amit Shah and JP Nadda. They gave me the chance to rule as Chief Minister despite being over 75. I had decided to resign some time back. I thought it best to resign today as we mark completion of two years in this term,” he told reporters.

In his farewell address, Yediyurappa showed grace and humility as he thanked Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and his ideologue  Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyayaji, former PM Atalji, Advaniji, Murali Manohar Joshij who built the BJP as a national party.

Yediyurappa is one of those rare politicians who always followed party discipline and now leaves behind politics that saw him built the BJP from the bottom up in Karnataka and in that process, he won eight assembly elections one time as a Member of Parliament and as a Member of a State Legislative Council (MLC).

But his highlight was to be elected by his party as its CM four times and three times as the leader of the opposition, making him a giant in Karnataka politics and perhaps the tallest leader to emerge from the Lingayat community.

Yediyurappa was born on 27 February 1943 in a village called Bookanakere in K.R.Pet taluk of Mandya district. At a young age, he lost his mother and in order to support his family, he sold lemons and worked as a factory clerk in a rice mill.

A member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from his college days, Yediyurappa’s public service began when he was appointed as Karyavaha (Secretary) of the Sangh’s Shikaripur unit in 1970. Later with hard work he was elected to the Shikaripura Town Municipality and was also appointed as the President of the Taluk unit of the Jana Sangh.

During the dark period of the Congress-imposed emergency,  Yediyurappa was imprisoned and lodged in the Bellary and Shimoga jails.

From there on he went from strength to strength with his dedication and became state president of the BJP in Karnataka in 1988. He won eight assembly elections has been a member of the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Legislative Assemblies (lower house) of Karnataka.

In 1994 he became the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and in 1999, he was nominated by the BJP to become a member of the legislative council (upper house) of Karnataka.

Yediyurappa became Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2007 but only for a week. The 2004 Assembly Election saw a hung Assembly with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 79 seats. The Congress came second with 65 and the JDS third with 58 seats. But then, like it happened 2018, the Congress and JDS came to power only for the government to break within days. Later, the JDS and BJP came together with the BJP agreeing for Kumaraswamy to be CM till 2007. But Kumaraswamy failed to keep the promise at his end by not transferring the power to Yediyurappa to 2008.

Betrayed by their own alliance partner, Yediyurappa once again went to the people and got their mandate with the BJP winning a wafer thing majority. It was after he came to power that he had face another tumultuous period with several charges of corruption against him. He had to quit in 2011 and was arrested. The BJP faced a humiliating defeat in the 2013 Assembly Election coming third as the BJP itself was divided into separate factions.

It was after Modi came to power that the BJP in the state felt rejuvenated. But Yediyurappa still had 4 more years for the 2018 Assembly elections to come. But the BJP once again failed to secure enough majority for it to comfortably form the government. The unholy alliance of Congress-JDS was formed again. Yediyurappa on the other hand swore that he would ensure the BJP sweeps Karnataka in 2019.

And it did. The BJP won 25 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats. Operation Kamal was launched and Yediyurappa became Chief Minister despite him crossing 75. But the BJP high command made an exception to their ‘retirement at 75 years’ rule for the man’s dedication and hardwork in making the party a formidable force.

By following party orders and resigning without creating an uproar, Yediyurappa has now set an example for others to follow.

The BJP as a party always ensures that stalwarts make space for the next generation of leaders to rise and lead. Yediyurappa will be remembered as the man who built the BJP in Karnataka brick by brick.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar wants US State Dept to create special envoy to fight ‘Islamophobia’, receives support from Democrats

The Somali-born United States Congresswoman from the state of Minnesota, Ilhan Omar with the support of more than two dozen members of Congress belonging to the Democratic party has asked the State Department to create a special envoy to fight Islamophobia.

According to Omar, the attacks against Muslims worldwide have increased, and she said “We must all stand united against this horrific rise in hate and I am working on legislation to formalize this position.”

With the help of her liberal Democratic lawmakers, Omar has sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week urging him to develop a US strategy for combating Islamophobia around the world and she also wants the State Department’s annual human rights reports to start including details on “state-sponsored Islamophobic violence and impunity for Islamophobic violence.”

“It is past time for the United States to stand firmly in favor of religious freedom for all, and to give the global problem of Islamophobia the attention and prioritization it deserves,” wrote the lawmakers.

Omar was joined by her fellow Minnesota delegation member Rep. Dean Phillips who signed the letter, based on a new report from the Council on American Islamic Relations that has documented more than 500 complaints of hate crimes against Muslims in 2021 in the form of vandalism and acts of violence targeting mosques in recent months.

However, Omar is riddled with controversy when she said the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks were carried out by “Some people did something,” and by saying that completely absolved the involvement of Islamic terrorists who carried out the attack and insulted the death of over 3,000 Americans and people from other nationalities.

Omar was also rebuked by her own democratic colleagues when she made the anti-Israel and anti-semitic comments in 2019 when she said the money was behind support for Israel and was forced to apologise.

In June 2021, Omar in a tweet said, “we have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.

These false equivalencies were condemned by New York Democrat Jerry Nadle who in a statement said, “Equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided. Ignoring the differences between democracies governed by the rule of law and contemptible organizations that engage in terrorism at best discredits one’s intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice and false equivalencies give cover to terrorist groups,”.

However, instead of retracting her statement and apologising, Omar called this an attack on her for being a Muslim and hit back by saying that this is shameful and accused her own colleagues who wrote this letter of engaging in “islamophobic tropes”.

Manifold Rise in Khadi Sales following PM’s Push through “Mann ki Baat”

The sale of Khadi products across the country has grown tremendously since 2014, thanks to the repeated appeals of  Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote Khadi. Since October 2016, the single-day sale at Khadi India’s Flagship Outlet in Connaught Place, New Delhi, has crossed ₹1 crore mark on 11 different occasions. This record performance of Khadi found a special mention in the latest episode of Prime Minister’s radio program “Mann ki Baat” aired on Sunday, 25th July.

What makes this performance even more significant is the fact that Khadi’s single-day sales exceeded Rs 1 crore for 4 times in October – November 2020, despite the economic distress and the fear surrounding Corona pandemic. Earlier in 2018 also, the single-day sales at Khadi’s CP outlet had crossed ₹1 crore mark for 4 times. On 2nd October 2019, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) registered the highest single-day sale of ₹1.27 crore at the CP outlet which continues to be a record till date.

It was for the first time on 22nd October, 2016, that the single day sale at Khadi India outlet in CP had reached ₹1.16 crore. Earlier, the highest single day sale of Khadi stood at ₹66.81 lakh that was recorded on 4th October 2014, just a day after the Prime Minister’s first address through “Mann kiBaat”. In the first episode of his radio program, the PM had appealed the countrymen to buy at least one Khadi product as it would help poor artisans to light lamps on Diwali.

KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena attributed the growth in Khadi sales to the constant support of the Prime Minister to promote Khadi. He said it is because of the Hon’ble PM’s appeals that a large number of people particularly youths have been inclined to buy Khadi. The growing buzz around “Swadeshi” has significantly helped lakhs of village industries prosper even during the challenging times of Covid-19 pandemic.
