“Any attack on civilians, UN personnel and UN compounds may constitute war crimes”: UNSC tells Taliban

After India took over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on Sunday (1 August) from France, the UN body has condemned the terrorist attacks carried out by the Taliban in Afghanistan and expressed deep concern.

The UNSC further called for a political settlement and ceasefire and made it very clear in no uncertain term that it does not support restoration of an Islamic Emirate under the Taliban.

After the Taliban attacked the United Nations compound in Herat, UNSC President and India’s Permanent Representative to the UN T S Tirumurti in a statement said, “The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the deplorable attack against the United Nations compound in Herat, Afghanistan, on 30 July, which resulted in the death of an Afghan security forces guard and several injured,”.

“The members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern about the high levels of violence in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s military offensive, and called for an immediate reduction of violence,” the statement said.

The UNSC condemned in the “strongest terms all instances of terrorism and deliberate targeted attacks against civilians”.

The Council members strongly emphasised that all parties in Afghanistan must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law in all circumstances, including those related to the protection of civilians, United Nations personnel and attacks on United Nations compounds may constitute war crimes, and “stressed the urgent and imperative need to bring the perpetrators to justice”.

The Council further asked both the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban to engage meaningfully in an inclusive, “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” peace process in order to make urgent progress towards a political settlement and a ceasefire.

“The members of the Security Council recognised that a sustainable peace can be achieved only through a comprehensive and inclusive Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process that aims at a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire, as well as an inclusive, just and realistic political settlement to end the conflict in Afghanistan,” the statement said.

Watch: Ganesha statue removed from a private property by TN police following protest by Church members in Namakkal

Tamil Nadu police removed a Ganesha statue from a private property on the “Girivalam Paathai” (circumambulation route) in the Tiruchengode area of Namakkal district after a protest by the church members.

On Tuesday, Hindu Munnani members placed a Ganesha statue in a private property in “Girivalam Paathai” in Namakkal district and worshipped it. Members of the Church in the nearby area, however, staged a protest near the private property, demanding that the Ganesha statue be removed.

Tensions rose in the neighbourhood as church people began to gather in large numbers and demanded that the Ganesha statue be removed immediately. Instead of removing the Christian protesters, the police, who arrived at the scene, warned the Hindus to remove the Ganesha statue placed on private property.

Devotees, BJP cadres, and members of several Hindu organizations formed a human chain around the Ganesha statue to prevent police from removing the statue. However, police used light force to evict devotees from the area and removed the Ganesha statue. This police atrocity has shocked Hindus throughout Tamil Nadu.

Devotees and netizens questioned the DMK government, asking if Hindus in Tamil Nadu do not have the right to worship Ganesha on a private property and if they must seek permission from the church to install a Ganesha statue.

Under financial crunch, Pakistan puts official PM residence on market for rent

Pakistan’s financial trouble hit a new high-low as Prime Minister Imran Khan’s official residence in Islamabad’s Red Zone has been put up for rent.

This decision to use the official PM residence to be rented out for cultural, fashion, educational, and other events was taken by the Pakistani Federal Cabinet on Tuesday (August 3) as a measure to shore up funds for the cash-strapped country.

It has also emerged that two committees have been formed to ensure that “discipline and decorum” of the PMs official residence are not violated during any events, reported Samaa TV.

In August of 2019, Imran Khan announced that an austerity drive wherein he has plans to convert the Prime Minister’s official residence into a state-of-the-art federal educational institution, and in order to cut costs, governors would not stay in Governor Houses anymore in a move to break away from colonial tradition and cut down on heavy costs.

As per Khan, the money saved by these measures will be used for welfare schemes. It must be noted that PakistanPM’s official residence was once rented out for the wedding function of Brigadier Waseem Iftikhar Cheema’s daughter in 2019 and Imran Khan, too was present at the wedding ceremony.

Pakistan’s Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood had said that it costs Rs 470 million to maintain the Prime Minister’s official residence in Islamabad and that was the reason Imran Khan vacated the official residence.

In September of 2018, the government of Pakistan auctioned eight buffaloes maintained by Imran Khan’s predecessor Nawaz Sharif at the PM House and garnered Rs 23 lakhs from the auction. The government also auctioned 61 luxury cars earlier this year to raise money for the country’s cash-strapped economy.

However, all these measures to stop spending are just drops in a bucket because Pakistan is now faced with massive debt and an economy that is constantly shrinking.

US, UK accuse Taliban of committing war crimes and revenge killing

As the reports of violence perpetrated by the Taliban makes the headline, the United States and the British embassies in Kabul said the Taliban may have committed war crimes in southern Afghanistan by carrying out revenge murders of civilians.

The Islamic jihadi insurgents, on the other hand, have disputed the charge. Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban negotiation team member based in Doha, told Reuters that the accusations were “baseless reports.”

The US mission tweeted a statement accusing the Taliban of killing dozens of civilians in the area of Spin Boldak and said, “In Spin Boldak, Kandahar, the Taliban massacred dozens of civilians in revenge killings.”

“These murders could constitute war crimes; they must be investigated & those Taliban fighters or commanders responsible held accountable,” the US embassy tweeted.

In a second tweet, it added: “The Taliban’s leadership must be held responsible for the crimes of their fighters. If you cannot control your fighters now, you have no business in governance later.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, briefing reporters on Monday ( August ) said a new US refugee program for US-affiliated Afghans, called reports of the Taliban committing atrocities “deeply disturbing and totally unacceptable.”

https://twitter.com/FawadAman2/status/1422098756703563779

State Department spokesman Ned Price said the Taliban are responsible for most of the “outrageous and atrocious acts of violence and the world will not accept a government in Afghanistan that doesn’t respect basic human rights.”

NDTV news anchor Sreenivasan Jain apologises for spreading misinformation about Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin

Sreenivasan Jain, a senior NDTV journalist and one of the network’s prime-time anchors, had to not only delete his factually incorrect tweet, but also apologize after claiming that Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin was found to be substandard and had made its way into the vaccination programme.

Jain made this callous statement, but he was forced to eat humble pie after netizens pointed out that his tweet was misleading because he forgot to clarify that the original batches of Covaxin were determined to be “substandard” were not distributed out.

Sreenivasan Jain has a history of biassed reporting, and when it became evident without a shadow of a doubt that he had tweeted false material on his social media account, the veteran NDTV journalist stated he should have framed it better and apologized, saying, “I am deleting the original Tweet. For any confusion caused as a result, apologies”.

In a tweet sent out by Jain, he said, “These were my personal tweets. NDTV’s focus for months has been on promoting India’s vaccination campaign – which of course I support completely,”. This tweet was basically covering fire to protect his news organization from any damage.

After he sent out his tweet criticizing Bharat Biotecc Covaxin, it went viral and received thousands of likes and retweets, prompting people to raise issues about the immunization programme.

What’s puzzling is that the tweets were based on a professional interview with Dr. NK Arora, and now he claims they’re his personal views, implying that instead of reporting news, Jain manufactured a report that caused anxiety for the public, who have been under a lot of stress for over a year due to the Wuhan virus, and could lead to vaccine hesitancy.

What is even more surprising is that Twitter did not even flag his tweet as ‘manipulated’ or ‘misleading’ like it does for a section of leaders and handles.

One thing is certain, Srinivasan Jain must clarify his tweet to the public, stating either that he did not understand what Dr. Arora said, implying incompetence, or that this was an intentional and malicious attempt to discredit a vaccine created in India by an Indian firm.

It’s worth noting that Twitter flagged his tweet, but he later erased it after the public called him out on his supposedly poor word choice.

The President shouldn’t have attended the so-called centennial celebrations of TN Assembly

President Ram Nath Kovind is on a five-day visit to Tamil Nadu from August 2 to 6. On August 2, the Hon’ble President attended the 100th year of the Tamil Nadu Legislature in Chennai and unveil a portrait of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. However, there was disagreement in the selection of the reference date for calculating the 100th anniversary, with many claiming that the President should not attend the centenary function in the year 2021 since it is morally wrong. The facts that support this viewpoint are presented here.

The Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms or more briefly known as the Mont–Ford Reforms, were introduced ostensibly by the colonial government to introduce self-governing institutions gradually in British India. However, it did not satisfy the political demands in India.

Freedom fighters like Balagangadhar Tilak, Gandhi, and others refused to accept the British-imposed Montague Chelmsford Reform and protested across the country. British, in order to quell the protest, brought out the draconian Rowlatt Act that was passed in March 1919 by the Imperial Legislative Council which gave them the power to arrest any person without any trial.

People demonstrated across the country in opposition to this draconian rule. Several political leaders were detained across the country.

In one such protest in Amritsar, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919. A large but peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab to protest against the arrest of pro-Indian independence leaders Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlu and Dr. Satya Pal. In response to the public gathering, the British Brigadier-General R. E. H. Dyer surrounded the Bagh with soldiers. The Jallianwala Bagh could only be exited on one side, as its other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit with his troops, he ordered them to shoot at the crowd, continuing to fire even as protestors tried to flee. The troops kept on firing until their ammunition was exhausted. At least 1000 people were killed and over 1,200 other people were injured of whom 192 were seriously injured.

The crimes committed by General Dyer and his forces were condemned by the whole country of India, as well as world leaders. Gandhi started the “Non-Cooperation” movement, denouncing the power-sharing under the Chelmsford reform, which he saw as alms, and condemned the Jallianwala Bagh killing. The entire nation was mourning, except the Justice Party, the predecessor to today’s DMK.

The Montagu Chelmsford reforms of 1920 which introduced direct elections to the Imperial Legislative Council and the Provincial Councils saw the Congress boycotting the elections while the Justice Party contested. Only 12.5 lakh people with land, wealth, and education were given the right to vote out of Madras province’s 4 crore population, which cannot be termed the province’s collective conscience.

Furthermore, there is no information on the distribution of backward class and scheduled caste electors, as well as women’s representation in the 12.5 lakh voters. The Justice Party ran in this election, which was not participated by Congress because it demanded self-rule. Despite the fact that communal and class electorates were provided in this election, the Dalit leaders were just nominated members of the legislative council and not chosen directly.

Affluent, land-owning, influential castes like Naidu, Reddy, Nair, Chettiar, and others dominated the Justice Party. The social justice espoused by Justice Party was nothing but social justice for the wealthy and landed aristocrats. They were anti-Brahmins and advocated caste upliftment, but exclusively for their caste.

From 1923, the Swarajya Party, founded by C R Das and Motilal Nehru, began participating in council elections. The party led by Sathyamoorthy defeated the Justice party, but they declined to form a government because they opposed Montagu Chelmsford’s dual government reforms.

Congress agreed to participate in elections only after greater powers were devolved to provinces under the Government of India Act 1935.  The Swarajya Party merged with the Congress in 1935. Congress under Rajaji won the Madras province elections in 1937. The Congress, which came into power in 1937, ruled until 1967.

Now that the question of whether this is the correct year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly has been raised. In fact, all the parties had a chance to contest the 1920 Madras Presidency Legislative Council election. All parties, with the exception of the Justice Party, had agreed to boycott the election in protest of Montagu Chelmsford’s proposed dual system of administration.  Congress and other parties participated in elections only when greater autonomy was granted in the Government of India Act 1935, after which the Justice Party was decimated.

In fact, if Congress had any self-respect left, it should have boycotted the 100th-anniversary celebration of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which it did not. They were the ones who called for a boycott of the legislative assembly elections in 1920. But that’s asking too much of it right now. Now that the President had agreed to grace the occasion of the 100th anniversary because there is no legal restraint, there is a moral issue with him attending the event.

The Justice Party, who were always British stooges, backed an act that resulted in the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre. To quell the protests that followed after the 1919 Act, the British enacted the Rowlatt Act, which was followed by the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre.

Also, the Justice Party supported the Simon Commission (1927), which had all White members and no Indians to decide on the destiny of Indians, despite the fact that it was opposed by Indians all over India. Only after this incident, we lost Bhagat Singh-Rajguru-Sukhdev to British Imperialists after they killed the police officer who was responsible for the lathi charge and killing of Lala Lajpat Rai who was protesting the Simon Commission.

The 100th year anniversary is calculated from the year Justice Party, which had supported the imperialist British government, its white supremacy, and all its atrocities in India, formed government. Is it appropriate for the President of an independent India to attend the event?

Also, it is to be noted that the late former CM Jayalalithaa celebrated 60th year of Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2012 taking 1952 as the base year since it was the year first elections happened in Tamil Nadu after India’s Independence.

Image

The DMK patriarch when he was CM celebrated 52nd year of Tamil Nadu Assembly in 1989 taking 1937 as base year.

Image

Now, CM Stalin is celebrating the 100th year of Tamil Nadu Assembly taking 1921 as the base year. Three different CMs, three different base anniversaries.

In truth, the reference date should be 1952, when all parties participated in the election and there was universal franchise, rather than 1921, when only the Justice Party contested elections and only Brahmin-hatred spewing wealthy aristocrats voted. There is nothing wrong with the President attending a function to unveil a portrait of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, but it is morally wrong to participate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s centennial celebrations.

Kerala Model: CPM comrades attack RSS worker for exposing vaccine irregularities in Kerala

CPM workers assaulted a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) karyakarta in Kerala’s Nedumkandam district after he shared a news article on his Facebook account alleging vaccine irregularities in the state, according to Janmabhumi.

Kerala has always been a hotbed of political violence, and the CPM is notorious for deploying vicious attacks on anyone who dares to bring up embarrassing news about vaccine distribution irregularities under the rule of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, whose decision to relax Covid norms for Bakrid celebrations has turned the state into a pandemic warzone.

On August 1, CPM cadres ambushed RSS worker Thaikeri Prakash while he was driving back to his home and smashed his car windshield and stabbed Prakash in his face and arm.

He shared a report the day before the attack that claimed vaccination distribution was being used for political gain after a 60-year-old man was supposedly given a vaccine token with a dubious seal on it.

The CPM’s bloodlust was sparked by a study accusing politicians of manipulating vaccine distribution to promote themselves, and when an RSS activist shared the information on Facebook, it was met with rapid retaliation.

However, after the comrades were apprehended by the police, it was discovered that the attack was carried out in response to Prakash’s Facebook post.

Dalit families in Arumbakkam face eviction without proper resettlement, self-proclaimed voices of Dalits look the other way

More than 150 families at Radhakrishnan Nagar in Arumbakkam locality of Chennai are at the risk of losing the roofs over their head as the Chennai Corporation goes on an eviction drive.

The second phase of eviction began on July 30 under the Cooum river eco-restoration project of the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT). Of the 243 families, only 93 families have received re-allotment orders to KP Park in Pulianthope after the residents resisted shifting to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumbakkam. The rest are yet to be resettled who are also expected to be given re-allotment orders to KP Park.

On top of this, many families (around 21) have claimed that their names are missing in the re-allotment list thereby putting them at the risk of losing their houses and pushed to the streets.

Despite their pitiable plight due to the mismanagement of the incumbent government, their voices remain unheard as the media friendly to the DMK establishment looked the other way. However opposition parties ensured that their plight comes to light through social media. It was only after much hue and cry from the public that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan visited Radhakrishnan Nagar ‘to listen to the concerns’ of the residents living there and ‘console them’. He had received petitions from them and had later met Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi IAS regarding the matter.

Naam Tamilar Katchi Seeman too visited to listen to the concerns of the people residing on the encroached land.

On the other hand, media outlets like The News Minute and other prominent Tamil journalists who claim to be the voice of the voiceless have been mute about the issue. The News Minute, a left-leaning digital news media portal considered friendly to the ruling DMK, which frequently goes out of the way and publishes articles on isolated incident of violence against Dalits, has not even published a single article on the matter.

MEA was also granted permission to fund clinical research in Bangladesh. The trials can commence once Bangladeshi authorities have given their approval.
