Protest erupt in JNU as Islamists and Communists organise webinar titled “Resistance to Indian occupation in Kashmir”

A webinar organised by students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was cancelled after it emerged it was an attempt to delegitimise India’s claim over Kashmir and this conference was organised by Ather Zia, a known India hater who is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Northern Colorado.

The webinar was “Resistance to Indian Occupation in Kashmir”, to be organised by the Centre for Women’s Studies (CWS) of the JNU and once this event became public, there was outrage among net citizens and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which said, “the webinar as it undermined the integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of India and the Constitution of India,”.

The webinar was to be organised on Friday (October 29) evening and according to the JNU JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, “The faculty member did not seek the permission of administration before planning such an event.”

“As soon as it came to our notice that an online webinar titled “Gendered Resistance and Fresh Challenges in Post-2019 Kashmir” was going to be organised at 8.30 pm today by Centre for Women’s Studies, JNU, the JNU administration immediately instructed the faculty member organising the event to cancel it. The program was cancelled forthwith,” he added

“After the aggressive and forceful protest by ABVP JNU and due to our proactive stand, the JNU administration had to cancel the anti-Bharat webinar that addressed the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir as ‘Indian occupied Kashmir'”, said ABVP JNU President Shivam Chaurasia.

ABVP JNU Secretary Rohit Kumar said, “We also demand immediate action against the Chairperson of the Centre for Women’s Studies and the concerned faculties who have mindlessly organised such a webinar by twisting facts on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with the intention to create a distorted narrative on Jammu and Kashmir.”

The leftest-Communists of JNU have a long and proud history of organising anti-India activities at the campus and would publicly cheer when Maoists would kill security forces.

For the CWS webinar, Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said, “This is a highly objectionable and a provocative subject, which questions the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. JNU can not be a platform to this kind of very questionable webinars. The matter is being inquired into.”

The Preachings Of Palani Baba: Delving Deep Into the Mind Of The Rabid Radicalizer – Part 2

This is part 2 of the two-part series titled “The Preachings of Palani Baba: Delving Deep Into The Mind Of The Rabid Radicalizer

Click here to read Part 1.

Much has been written about the process and methods of radicalization of Muslims in this age of ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Intellectuals and politicians alike are eager to lay the mistake at the door of Saudi Wahhabism, funded by oil money, radicalizing by appropriating the tools of modern technology, namely, the Internet and mobile technologies.

A rare few are aware of earlier radicalization programs that were carried out in other places and times.

Here, we attempt to bring to you the thoughts and techniques of radicalization by Palani Baba, a charismatic radical preacher, who travelled the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu in the 1980s and 1990s. He was murdered in 1997, presumably by a group of Hindu extremists.

Approach To Mobilization Of The Faithful

Always, the preaching of a ‘purer’ brand of Islam was but a means to an end – creating a motivated populace from which to draw soldiers.

The end purpose, though stated in terms of opposition to a secular Bharatiya State, is quite clear in its unstated goal – The establishment of a State for Muslims, replete with sharia law. The means is also through conflict and striving, i.e. jihad. He is also quite clear when he says he is not looking for a groom for his daughter. He wants to find young men of violent nature for conflict.

Many of the inheritors to Palani Baba’s legacy frequently side with Dravidianists and claim to be inheritors of a Tamil tradition and as co-nationalists in a Tamil nation, who just happen to be Muslim. This is directly in conflict with the notion of Qom that Palani Baba preaches. In one of his speeches he refers to M A Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, as ‘our’ Jinnah, simply because he belongs to the same fraternity of believers.

Most theories of radicalization – of poverty, disenfranchisement and educational disparities – automatically go out of the window. This was before the Babri Masjid era, when the Ram Janmabhumi movement had begun to be a means of Hindu mobilization, but whose effects were little seen deep in the South.

Relation With Kaffirs

Living among kaffirs is seen as a situation akin to living among fire. Striving among non-Muslims to establish a Muslim state is the highest goal. He also exhorts young men, brandishing a sword, to kill anyone who dares insult Islam.

He speaks about the need to teach non-Muslims Islam and convert them to Islam. Keeping the truth of Islam to oneself is selfishness. The way his speeches approach Hindu Dharma is quite in keeping with Dravidian political approach – he neatly divides Hindus into Brahmins and non-Brahmins. His antagonism is clearly towards Brahmins, a class, whom in the 1980s were seen as outsiders and against whom there was significant amount of prejudice in Tamil society.

In the same breath, he mentions the Hindu veneration of the cow. ‘To you, it is holy. To me, it is no more than a clod’. One of his speeches contains a diatribe full of misquotes claiming Vedic literature included sacrifices involving eating dogs and human beings.

Here, we again see the classic approach of an Islamist –demand respect for their beliefs at the point of the sword, and always keep the kufr on the defensive. The slaughter of the cow is seen as a means to maintain the asymmetry in the relationship with the non-believer, where the non-believer has to give in to Muslim’s demand for respect, but where the Muslim is not obliged to reciprocate. Also, here he always describes the Hindus whom Islam is seen in opposition to, as ‘Brahmins’, never Hindus.

Interestingly, in a speech in Sri Lanka, he exhorts Muslims there to stay loyal to the Government, since they have bigger problems to deal with. Since it is during the times of strife, he mentions that Tamil Hindus in Sri Lanka will have bigger problems to deal with and will not display ‘fanatic behaviour’ – which is banning cow slaughter.

Arms Control

In one of his speeches he is presented with a sword and he openly speaks of the need to bear arms, since he is looking for war.

It is indeed interesting that in Tamil Nadu, a State that had relatively few riots, only mild rivalry between Hindus and Muslims and a long history of co-existence, people would speak of war and conflict.

Dealing With Non-Muslim State

He complains of poor support from the judiciary and the press. Key cases he uses are cases against cow slaughter, the petition in Calcutta High Court against the Quran and the Ram Janmabhumi case.

He comes across as a keen observer of the judicial system in place in the Bharatiya State. Two of his observations that bear this out –

– Ambiguity of Constitutional provisions, which are couched in language that no one would have disagreement with, but the actual implementation is in individual rules/notifications and judgements that can be subjective.

– Judgements and decisions that are forced upon Courts only under threat of violence, that is, the capability of groups to indulge in violence and their projecting that capability.

His approach to the State is one of co-operation on a need basis, i.e., as long as core interests of the faithful are not compromised by the State. He frequently exhorts on the need for unity among believers as a primary strength in any negotiations with the State.

Preaching Style

– His primary call is the mobilization of the young Tamil Muslim man, whom he wants to rise above concerns of family, career and leisure towards submission to Islam.

– The young man is taunted for his lack of ‘honour’ and his succumbing to temptations of living among a kuffar society.

– The Tamil Muslim is here spoken of as second to none and an equal partner in the quam of Islam – just as good as the Saudi Sayids, thus effectively countering the Afzal/Ajlaf hierarchy prevalent in Islam. This fits into the mainstream Dravidian discourse of race politics.

– The kuffar enemy is equated with the ‘Brahmin’, since again this does not conflict with the mainstream Dravidianist brand of politics. The Hindu and Brahmin are merged into one and the same race, thus effectively seeking allies from across the spectrum of Dravidianist politics. One may note that this has brought good dividends as no mainstream political party in Tamil Nadu can have any quarrel with this equation.

– Repeatedly, the presence of an exclusive priestly class and the dynamic nature of the Hindu worldview are used to characterize Brahmins (Hindus) as racist, bigoted and ‘hypocritical’. This, in turn, is a very effective tactic as equality is framed as a universal virtue and dishonesty in belief as a universal vice.

– Rather than relying on appealing to authority, viz, extensive quoting of Islamic scholars, the entire body of preaching is presented in simple, everyday language as logical conclusions that can be arrived at organically from the first principles of revelation as in the Quran and the exemplary conduct of the Prophet in the Hadiths.

– In the same manner as the language, the concerns brought through are situations facing the average Tamil Muslims in the small towns where they continue to live. Palani Baba demonstrates an understanding of global geopolitics, but only alludes to them in passing.

– No clue is given in his talks as to the source and logical route of established authority. All authority is derived directly from the Quran, the Hadiths and the life stories of the four Rashidun Caliphs. This is in keeping with the style of all contemporary scholars who provide the philosophical framework of modern jihad. One may see this in the teachings of Abu Bakr al-Naji, for example.

Conclusion

In this two-article series (first part), our intention has been to demonstrate the universal nature of radicalization of Muslim populations. The message for radicalization need not be imported from outside a population, but is found in the very core of Islam’s teachings.

Even if a Muslim population is not disadvantaged with respect to the surrounding population of non-believers, it is not difficult to create a narrative of victimhood and build a radicalized corps of jihadis.

The ranks of jihadi outfits are populated through the work of such itinerant preachers rather than highly visible networks. It also becomes very difficult for a secular state to identify, isolate and neutralize their message, given the viral and grass-roots nature of the message.

Today’s jihadi core of Tamil Nadu was synthesised from the youth of the 1990s that rallied around this man’s preachings. Thus, as an original source, the preachings of Palani Baba form an excellent guide to understanding the process and results.

Dalit woman tries to immolate herself outside Salem DC office due to torture by DMK goons

Tensions prevailed outside the District Collectorate complex in Salem as a Dalit woman attempted to immolate herself due to the administration’s apathy over her complaint regarding harassment by DMK goons.

Residents hailing from Konur village near Mettur have been living there for decades and have been making use of a public land.

Recently, two men belonging to the DMK – Pugazhendhi and Vairamani – residing in the same area, tried to grab their land and harassed the family living there asking them to vacate the place.

The DMK goons barged into their house and started creating ruckus by cutting off the trees and breaking the water tanks.

The Dalit family had registered a complaint in this regard and have been wanting to meet the District Collector to expedite action against the perpetrators.

The family on Friday had come to the Collectorate complex today to meet and submit a petition to the Collector. However, they were prevented by the police from entering the complex.

Outraged by the administrative apathy, the lady of the family poured kerosene over her and tried to immolate herself but was quickly prevented by the police and by-standers.

She was later escorted from the premises by the police in an autorickshaw.

Speaking to reporters who had assembled at the spot, the lady said that the harassment has been going on for more than 4 months and that they are not able to stay there peacefully. She said that the police are acting in favour of them and not taking any action.

“We’re being harassed on a daily basis. They are not letting us stay peacefully. They have been torturing us continuously. Since we’re from the Scheduled Caste they are not letting us stay there and have been harassing us. Where will people like us go for getting justice? Their atrocity is unbearable.”, the lady who tried to immolate herself said.

Another lady who had accompanied her said that the DMK men have been using their political clout and have been harassing the Dalit family for a while.

Hindu Munnani to hold state-wide protests over rising incidents of attack on temples

The Hindu Munnani has called for a state-wide protest in light of the DMK government’s inaction over the recent attacks on temples.

With not even a month having passed after the attack on the Siruvachur Amman Temple located in Perambalur district, idols at the same temple were once again found broken on October 27, with the vandals inflicting far more serious damage.

The Madurakaliamman temple located at Siruvachchur in Perambalur district is a famous temple. The Goddess is said to be the family deity of Kanchi Sankaracharya.

The Periyasamy – Chelliyamman Temple and the Sengamalayar Temple are associated temples of the Madurakaliamman temple and fall under the control of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department.

Earlier on October 6, many of the idols at the Periyasamy – Chelliyamman Temple and the Sengamalayar Temple including that of Amman, Maduraiveeran, the Saptakannis, etc were found displaced and broken by miscreants.

The Hindu Munnani on October 8 held a protest in Perambalur district. Various other Hindu organizations along with Hindu Munnani once again protested on October 23 condemning the police, the district administration and the Department of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments for their continued apathy regarding the issue.

The attack on the same temple once again on October 27 has raised serious concern among the local devotees.

These temples come under the ambit of the HR&CE department.

When the temple was attacked on October 6, members of the Hindu Munnani who arrived on the spot asked for installing a CCTV camera in the temple. But the temple management did not oblige to the demand.

The Hindu Munnani in its statement has said that neither has the police taken any concrete action nor has HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu inspected the spot to take stock of the issue.

“Had the vandalization happened to a mosque or a church, the Chief Minister himself along with several other parties would have jumped to take action. Since, this is just a temple, the government is not interested in taking up the matter.”, the statement noted.

“Minister Sekar Babu has all the time to melt temple gold but not visit a temple that comes under his control which has been attacked”, the statement lashed out.

Hindu Munnani President Kadeswara Subramaniam has said that if the government does not take any action, they would be launching a state-wide protest soon.

Facebook changes its corporate name to Meta, introduces ‘Metaverse’ concept

Facebook, the revolutionary and controversial social media giant that has billions of users has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebranding exercise and the new name was announced by its co-founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg during the Connect 2021 event.

In an official statement, the company said that Meta will bring “together our apps and technologies under one new company brand”. and that Meta would better “encompass” what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR), reports BBC.

However, the change will not apply to the company’s individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, but only to the parent company that owns them.

Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s plans to build a “metaverse” during a company’s live-streamed virtual and augmented reality conference and said that Meta would be an online world where people can game, work, and communicate in a virtual environment, using VR headsets and declared that the existing brand could not “possibly represent” everything that the company is doing.

Right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we’re doing today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” Zuckerberg said.”

To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta,” he said.

“From now on, we will be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first. That means that over time you won’t need a Facebook account to use our other services. As our new brand starts showing up in our products, I hope people around the world come to know the Meta brand and the future we stand for,” he added.

Foreign Secretary Shringla hopes Covaxin will soon get approval as PM Modi heads for G20 summit

During a presser, when asked about the delay in granting Emergency Use Listing (EUL) for Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said India is hopeful of getting approval soon.

According to Shringla, the regulatory body was concerned and had put some questions to Bharat Biotech and approval for the vaccine should come if the queries are responded to effectively.

“It is a technical and regulatory group. The emergency authorisation by the WHO is based on technical considerations and we are carefully following up the discussions at the WHO. We are hopeful that Covaxin will get approval soon,” Shringla said.

He also added, “India has proposed to its partner countries, primarily countries that Indian citizens normally travel to, that we should have a mutual (mechanism) that you recognise our vaccine certification and we will mutually recognise your vaccine certification,”.

“Now the advantage of this is that as we keep adding new vaccines to our stock of national vaccines, you do not need to go to every country to try and get recognition. You recognise the certification that we issue, you recognise its integrity and we will give you mutual treatment,” he said.

The foreign secretary said a number of countries have already agreed to the mutually acceptable COVID-19 vaccine certification framework proposal. He, however, did not name the countries. “So we have achieved some reciprocal arrangements with a number of countries. We are working with all of our partner countries to have similar arrangements. It will simplify international travel, it will normalise international travel,” Shringla said.

However, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads for the G20 summit, this mechanism could be helpful in the recovering from the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. “Business travellers, tourists which contribute to the recovery of economies will be greatly benefitted from this simplified international travel regime that we are proposing and we have taken it up with the G20, we have taken it up bilaterally, we have taken it up in plurilateral forums,” he said.

“We will continue to advocate this as a means of better and easier access to citizens travelling all over the world,” Shringla added.

On India proposing waivers by the World Trade Organisation on Covid-related medical products including vaccines, he said, “We have advocated for technology transfer and diversification of supply chain and production hubs to ensure affordable and equitable access to COVID-19 disease control tools,” he said.

“I am happy to share that G20 has recognised extensive vaccination as a global public good and I think that is where discussions in the G20 will be relevant,” he added.

New Israel ambassador to India optimistic about new West Asia Quad

The new Israel ambassador to New Delhi, Naor Gilon has said, “Cooperation is never against something, it is always for something,” during this his first interaction with the media.

As per the protocol, Gilon presented his credentials to President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday (October 28), and was very optimistic about the formation of the new Quad, with the US, India, Israel, and the UAE as the four members which have now been dubbed as West Asia Quad.

Gilon said that things have improved a lot after the diplomatic recognition by the UAE, but there is still a serious threat posed by Iran and its nuclear ambition. He said anti-Iran sentiments is one of the most important factors binding the US, Israel, and the UAE.

In his interaction with Indian media, Gilon also said Israel perceived Iran as a “real threat” with its nuclear capability and extremist ideology and his country take these threats seriously.

However, India has strong multilateral ties with Iran and has vested interests in the Chabahar port in Iran developed by India as an important infrastructural project for both countries to access not just Afghanistan and the untapped markets of Central Asia as part of the grand International North-South Transit Corridor.

But during the Trump presidency, India was compelled to stop imports of crude oil from Iran, which caused stress in ties. But it is not all India’s fault because Iran for years dragged its feet in this project and now Tehran is slowly easing India out of infrastructural projects.

There is growing resistance to developing the rail line from Chabahar to Zahedan or a stake in the Farzad-B gas field, which was discovered by India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

This is why many see the new West Asia quad as a much-needed synergy between the four countries as this grouping can have a serious impact on economic and infrastructural development in this region

Gilon said we must facilitate company-to-company cooperation in these areas, rather than at the government-to-government level which was a clear indication of red tape.

India and the Israeli military right now are participating in the Blue Flag exercise in Israel, and the UAE is an observer but has also sent its soldiers to be part of the exercise.
